By SIMONE KERWIN IT’S no surprise that Belinda Wilson’s artwork is heavily influenced by the Australian landscape, considering she grew up in the foothills of the Warby Ranges. The now Melbourne-based artist loved the surrounds and views afforded from the family’s Hamilton Park home near Wangaratta, where she was raised with her three sisters and brother. “I love the everyday landscape - the one you may miss while you’re driving past in the car,” she said. So she was pleased to return ‘home’ this month for the St Bernard’s Primary School Art and Photography Show, where she displayed a couple of pieces, several years after her own involvement with the school as a parent (her son Alessandro, now 21, is a former student). “I loved Ali going to St Bernard’s - it was a great community and I met some wonderful people there. “I was able to show other young artists in the community that there are possibilities available to them, because I had a show in New York when I was living in Wangaratta,” she said. Belinda completed a Master of Fine Art (Research) at RMIT University in 2018, focusing on the effects of extreme weather on people living in regional Australia.

Eclampsia and litters A NEW litter of puppies is always an exciting time for all. However, unfortunately not all pregnancies are complication free. Some of the most common complication pre-and post-whelping are nutritional deficiencies. Eclampsia or milk fever is a deficiency in blood calcium levels. Just prior to whelping and for the first few weeks post whelping the mother’s calcium requirements increase dramatically. This is due to the demand for calcium for the mineralisation of the puppies’ skeletons in the womb, and the calcium in milk during lactation. These two demands drain the amount of usable calcium in the mother’s blood which leads to low blood calcium. This is a life-threatening illness that requires immediate veterinary attention. Eclampsia generally presents in the first four weeks of lactation but can also occur pre-whelping. The main clinical signs that you will see are restlessness and trembling, but these can quickly progress to collapse, convulsions, seizures, and death. It is important to get your pet to your vet as quickly as possible if you suspect eclampsia, even with mild signs. Your vet will try to confirm the diag-
with Felix DeNatris, Wangaratta Veterinary Clinic nosis with a blood test if available and then initiate treatment. Treatment consists of suppling supplementary calcium and controlling clinical signs, such as tremors or seizures. After the initiation treatment, the animal generally respond rapidly and it is at this time recommended that the puppies are weaned or provided supplementary feeding to try to minimise further loss of calcium for the mother, as well as supplementing the mother with oral calcium. Prevention is always better than a cure. Currently the best way to prevent eclampsia is via appropriate nutrition during pregnancy. This is done by feeding either puppy food or food designed for lactating dogs. It is important not to start feeding these too early in pregnancy or to supplement too much calcium as excessive calcium can also cause eclampsia. If you have a pregnant dog, it is best to contact your vet and discuss an appropriate nutrition plan to keep them as healthy as possible during her pregnancy and delivery.

◆ MANY USES: St John’s wort can be used for wound healing, skin conditions or for its mood boosting properties.
St John’s wort: friend or foe? HYPERICUM perforatum, commonly known as St John’s wort (STJW) is a flowering perennial plant in the Hypericaceae family that has adapted to become a noxious weed in Australia. Named after its bright yellow flowers that are reported to bloom for the first time around St John the Baptist’s birthday, the word ‘wort’ means ‘plant’ in Old English. St John’s wort is advertised widely to boost mood (including S.A.D or post-natal) and provide relief from mild to moderate depression, anxiety, menopausal symptoms, PMS and irritability. However, St John’s wort like many

Always seek advice from a trained herbalist/naturopath prior to commencing a herbal remedy. Whilst STJW is an environmental enemy and farmer’s foe, it has many uses for an herbalist, including antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anxiolytic, astringent, nervine tonic, relaxant and topically is a powerful antiseptic and wound healer. YOUR HEALTH Fowles Farm to Table Pinot Noir 2020
OVER the last few weeks I’ve found myself travelling along the Hume Highway more often than I’d like to. For months the pandemic kept us rooted in the one location, only venturing out for essentials, but now the restrictions are lifted we find ourselves touring like there was no tomorrow. Unfortunately it hasn’t always been for pleasure, which somehow makes the long and monotonous journey even more intolerable. If it wasn’t for having family and friends waiting at the other end, you simply wouldn’t do it. So breaking it up with a visit to the family owned and run Fowles at Avenel certainly helps. While there is a wide range to choose from, the Farm to Table Pinot Noir is readily available not only on site but all over the place at major stockists. It has a bright cherry red colour and fresh aroma of red berry fruit with a hint of strawberry and spice. The flavour is also bright and fresh; lively with cherry, multifaceted but not too heavy, with a dry finish that makes it easy to drink - especially for lunch. Enjoy it with bruschetta or

◆ DON’T OVERDO IT: At Christmas we often overindulge on food and drink but there’s no need to keep up the pace through to the new year.
Feel great this Christmas with some salumi, cheese, pickled vegetables and crusty bread and feel your tastebuds revived without your palate being weighed down - day or night. Whichever way you’re going, you’ll feel like you’re on the home stretch.
COST: About $15.
This Day in History, 1896 THE first x-ray machine in Wangaratta went on view on this day. The machine was set up in Hughes chemist shop in Murphy Street and a crowd gathered to inspect a lad with an injured foot. After everyone had viewed the foot, the crowd moved onto new wonders: coins in a matchbox, nails in shoes and then shoving their arms under the machine to see their bones through the material of their clothes.
WHAT a year 2021 has been. We thought the COVID situation would resolve after last year but it has dragged on and a lot of things have changed. We’ve spent so much more time at home, less sports, often unable to visit our friends and relatives for months at a time. What it has shown me is that we can be adaptable to change and it reminds me of the quote ‘You can’t stop the waves but you can learn how to surf’. Many people have been working on their immunity this year and from what I’ve seen, that has been of great benefit to their health. With Christmas Day fast approaching, it seems like it’s a deadline that everything has to get done by, which means that it can initiate some stress in us while waiting at the supermarket queues with our masks on, or trying to find a car parking space to do that ‘one
with Christos Miliankos, North East Naturopathic Group extra job on our list’. Take some time to relax, do some deep breathing, maybe some yoga or go for a walk/run - all these things will help you cope if you’re feeling stressed. Often during this time of year we eat and drink to excess. So the best advice is if you do this on Christmas Day, you don’t need to keep up that pace on Boxing Day or all the way to NYE - best to go back to the diet your body feels best on. GONE FISHING
FEATURE STORY
◆ TARGET SPECIES: Murray cod season opened today, December 1. Good luck to everybody heading out. Despite the high and dirty water there are still plenty of Murray cod fishing options for the start of the new season.
Murray cod season opens, with plenty of local options MURRAY cod opening is here and many people are disappointed because of the recent rainfall and high water. All is not lost. There are still plenty of Murray cod fishing options around. The flush moved quite quickly down the Ovens and King rivers. The water was already starting to recede in Wangaratta by Sunday morning. I think bait fishing for Murray cod will be your best option early this season with the water being higher than normal, and off colour. Baits of bardi grubs, yabbies, cheese and worms will all be worth trying. Bardi grubs and large yabbies seem to catch bigger cod more regularly than cheese or worms. No yabby could ever be too big for a Murray cod. For those wanting to lure fish for Murray cod, I think the upland waterways will be your best bet. The King river upstream of Moyhu, or the Ovens River upstream of Tarrawingee where the water flows over rocks and gravel instead of clay and mud. The Kiewa River upstream of Gundowring will also be worth a try. I suspect the water will be

quite high, and wading will be difficult, however the water clarity will most likely be fine in these areas for lure fishing. Don’t overlook the lakes. Lake Mulwala will be worth fishing but there may be a lot of current in the Bundalong area due to the Murray River being very high. Lake Nillahcootie has some very nice Murray cod in it with catches of fish over 100cm long becoming more frequent. Then there’s lakes Eildon and Buffalo that are both stocked with Murray cod. The Murray River will be hard to access with many public access areas closed due to the high water levels. If you can get in to the Murray River, expect high water and strong current. Murray cod fishing can be very good in a summer flood along the Murray River.
From page 1
Having experienced the district’s scorching summers and potential to flood, she said her work certainly drew on her time here. “I’m such a big advocate for regional living,” she said. “Most of my work focuses on the human condition, and even though there is a great sense of community in regional areas, there is hardship, and isolation to some degree. “My landscapes are definitely reminiscent of the area, particularly the colours. “A lot of my master’s was celebrating and telling the story of my father and his connection to a regional community, so a lot of my work featured dad. “I’m viewed as a landscape artist, but there are lots of figures in my work; there will often be a figure emerging, though it may not always be blatant.” While many artists have struggled through the COVID-19 pandemic, Belinda - who has been a practising artist for nearly 30 years and has work held in private and public collections - said she had been lucky to be busier than ever, as she’s focused on her art full-time.
Having applied for the 2021 virtual edition of The Other Art Fair, she was selected as one of 200 artists from across the globe to participate in the event throughout November. “It was a nice surprise,” she said. “As an artist, you’re always applying for art prizes and opportunities, but it often depends on trends, what’s in style and what recognition an artist has already received.” Belinda is also preparing work for The Other Art Fair, which will be held in Sydney from December 2 to 5. When she took part in the 2018 event, soon after finishing her master’s, her oil paintings sold out. “It’s always surprising when you sell an artwork, but all the oils sold, with a couple of days of the fair left to run, and only a handful of drawings and prints were left,” Belinda said. She returned to the Fair in 2019 with representation from Sydney’s Brenda Colahan Fine Art, and was preparing for last year’s event when it was cancelled due to COVID-19. Belinda spent 10 years working at GOTAFE before moving to RMIT Uni-
versity, where she was Deputy Head of School, School of Art, and says she found managing artists and the next generation of emerging artists to be inspiring. But when she had the opportunity to take a voluntary redundancy from the university last year and become a fulltime artist, she said it was the best thing she ever did. Belinda now enjoys spending four to eight hours a day in her home studio in Cheltenham. With gallery representation from Brenda Colahan Fine Art, Melbourne’s Manyung Gallery, and Levee Art Gallery and Studio in Maitland, NSW, Belinda takes commissions, and her academic and fine art qualifications add further weight to her work. “I always loved the process of painting; becoming a full-time artist has enabled me to further delve into better understanding of painting theories and application,” she said. “I feel very lucky. “Now is the time, while I’m still young enough, to branch out and take whatever opportunities I can find.”
