Lending a listening ear ◆ CHANCE TO CHAT: Prostate cancer nurse Sally Timmins, support group leader Dave Edwards and Mandy Cavanagh, nurse unit manager for Northeast Health Wangaratta’s cancer and wellness centre, discuss the creation of a prostate cancer support group for the local area, which will have its first meeting on June 9. PHOTO: Kieren Tilly
By SIMONE KERWIN THROUGH any stage of life, great comfort comes from sharing experiences with others who understand what you’re going through. Until now, that’s been difficult for local men with prostate cancer, and their families, unless they know others with the diagnosis or can travel to support groups in Shepparton or Albury. However, a planned new North East support group
based in Wangaratta is aiming to change the situation. With the assistance of Northeast Health Wangaratta prostate cancer nurse Sally Timmins, who has held her newly-created role for the past six months, the prostate cancer support group will kick off on Wednesday, June 9 with a gathering at Wangaratta’s Northo (North Eastern Hotel) in Spearing Street. For men like Chiltern’s Dave Edwards, who with Sally has
trained as a support group leader through the Cancer Council Victoria and Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia in readiness for the group, it will be a welcome addition to local services, and he’s hoping people will take full advantage of the chance to gather with others who have prostate cancer diagnoses, as well as their family members. “If my experience can help others, that’s great, and theirs will also help me, so it’s a two-
way street,” he said. Dave said he was lucky his diagnosis two and half years ago came early and was closely monitored. “When my PSA (prostate specific antigen) count got to a certain level, I had a radical prostatectomy, where they take the whole prostate out,” he said. “That was in September, and though I still have sideeffects, it’s a matter of doing your exercises and talking to
your doctors. “I had two friends in Bendigo who had gone through it, so I had them to speak to if I needed to, but it would be great to have people in this area - and some people have no-one. “We are blessed we have good doctors and a prostate cancer nurse now for the first time, but it really makes a difference if you can talk to others who know what you’re going through.
“It’s typical of men that we don’t like talking about things, particularly about our health, but we need to do it more often.” Sally agreed, saying while every story was different, knowledge of shared experience was so valuable for all involved. “There are a lot of side-effects of treatment, so having peer support is really important,” she said.

Arthritis in your pets WITH the cold weather starting to kick in, many of you may notice your pets starting to slow down or become stiff. Arthritis is a degenerative disease of one or more joints and it can cause chronic pain and a decline in quality of life. The majority of joints in the body rely on a layer of cartilage between the two bones making a smooth surface and acting like a cushion so they can move freely. Lubrication of the joints is aided by a liquid called synovial fluid that acts like engine oil. Arthritis occurs when there is inflammation in the joint resulting in destruction of the cartilage. Inflammation that causes arthritis can be caused by general wear and tear of joints in combination with ageing, but this is fairly uncommon. The most common cause of arthritis is due to an initiating cause such as joint instability and abnormalities, trauma, defects in the joint cartilage and obesity. Intermittent lameness that becomes more frequent and severe with time, some will have a stiff gait rather than lameness, it is often exacerbated by exercise, long periods of lying down, cold weather, a reluctance to walk or play, difficulty climbing stairs or jumping, limping, lagging behind on walks, difficulty rising from a resting position, yelping when touched, change in personality and licking joints. Unfortunately, arthritis is not a condition that is reversible or curable but
with Dr Ellie Merritt, Warby Street Veterinary Hospital there are a number of areas of therapy to treat arthritis: Medical therapy - Chondroprotectives such as cartrophen courses, Sashas Blend and fish oils can all help to slow the progression of arthritis. They do this by protecting the healthy cartilage and increase lubrication in the joint. Pain relief - there are a huge number of options on the market for pain relief in arthritic dogs. Chat to your vet about which is best for your pet. Weight Control - many dogs that have arthritis are also overweight. Being overweight increases the load on joints, adding to pain and discomfort. Environment - keeping your pet warm will help keep joint mobile and supple. Make sure your dogs bed is off the ground, away from draughts and is padded. A coat can help during the cold winter months. Exercise -this is a fine balance, too much exercise will put too much strain on joints, too little will allow for increased stiffness and decreased mobility. If you’re worried that your pet may be suffering from arthritis, contact your vet as there are many options for management that can make your pet more comfortable.

with Mark from Edgars Books and News ◆ MAO’S STORY: This book fills in the missing years with a human tale of sadness, acceptance and love.
Mary’s Last Dance IF you watched Australian Story last month or Anh’s Brush with Fame last Sunday night, you will have met Mary Li. But only in her book will you get the full story. Mary McKendry was raised in Rockhampton Qld and like a lot of children Mary had a passion; in her case it was for ballet. Unlike most of us ‘would-be ballerinas’, AFL footballers, lost city discoverers or astronauts, Mary had the ability to match the passion! By the age of 16, Mary was living in London to study at the Royal
Ballet School and eventually the Houston ballet as Principal Dancer where she met her future partner Li Cunxin (you may have heard of him via his book and movie: Mao’s Last Dancer). Soon they were a pas de Deux and then baby made three (enter stage right, Sophie). At the height of her career Mary disappeared from the stage and out of the spotlight. Mary’s Last dance fills in the missing years with a human tale of sadness, acceptance and love as new names are added to the story and family.
᛬
You’ll need to read the book to learn who Thomas and Bridie are. This book is a biography in its own right, rather than a sequel to Mao’s Last Dancer, and is the missing piece of a great family story. At your next book club meeting, don’t go for an award-winning overseas title that is agenda driven and earnestly recommended but ultimately unsatisfying. Try a book you will enjoy with your wine and cheese. Mary’s Last Dance is this month’s selection and is available now at Edgars Books and News.

YOUR HEALTH St Anne’s Vineyards Pinot Gris 2019
WHEN you live in Melbourne and want to plan a weekend away, you often contemplate going in many different directions. Within a few hours radius from that centre you can choose to be on a surf coast, in a central desert or traversing a mountain range. It’s a strange phenomenon but it seems like once you’ve made that epic move to country, you no longer plan escapes in the same way and instead tend to stay in your own neck of the woods. The last year has seen more of us explore our own state again and it’s a lot of fun being a tourist in a town that is a long day trip or overnight stay away, especially along the Murray River. The weather is great, the water is flowing and there are picturesque wineries to visit like St Anne’s in Moama. It’s located on the river about an hour from Bendigo and has a rammed-earth cellar door that overlooks a lake which is teaming with wildlife. The St Anne’s Pinot Gris is wonderfully alive and fruity wine; lightly straw coloured with a gentle blossom aroma around

that fresh green apple. It’s crisp and dry, there are pear and lemon fruit flavours but there is also a little almond nuttiness to found out the finish. It makes an ideal table wine especially over lunch - a glass pairing nicely with antipasto, breads and cheeses. It pays to get out and about, and what better souvenir is there than wine to take home? About $19.
This Day in History, 1942 THERE was a rush on clothing stores in town, when news leaked out that clothes rationing was about to be introduced for the duration of the war. People thought they had better get in and buy up before the ration books started appearing. To stop the panic buying, the government allocated shops a daily quota. As allocations sold out early in the day, this put out of town people at a disadvantage, so Wangaratta stores set aside Thursdays for country customers, until ration books were issued.
Rechargeable hearing aids HEARING aids developed in the past couple of years have some features which can be ‘game-changers’. Rechargeable hearing aids are in this category. In recent years, the hearing aid manufacturers have started using lithium ion batteries to create rechargeable hearing aids. This can be especially helpful for people with dexterity problems as there is no need to change small battery cells. This has the additional benefit of eliminating the risk of small children or pets swallowing a battery inadvertently, as there is no small battery to leave lying around the house. Hearing aids go into their charging unit every night and can be ‘topped up’ with a short charge during the day if the user has been doing a lot of Bluetooth streaming. The lithium ion battery has sufficient reserve to last up to 24 hours, partially

depending on how much Bluetooth streaming occurs through the day. It is helpful to note that there is no risk of overcharging these batteries. The hearing aids turn on automatically when they are removed from the charging case. It is important not to switch off the power to the charger in the middle of the night, perhaps thinking you might save electricity. The unintended consequence of doing this is that the hearing aids will not have enough charge to work all day long. You will discover a need to pack the charging case when you are away from home - put the charger on your list of things to pack when you go away and wear the hearing aids. If you are caught without your charger, say for an unexpected hospital visit, be sure to have someone bring your charger to you.
If on a holiday, you might try calling a local hearing clinic and enquire whether they have a charger you can either purchase or borrow until you get home. If you are travelling somewhere you won’t have power available, there are still some options for you. Some recharging units can have a power pack attachment which can provide several recharges. Otherwise, any source you use to charge your mobile, i.e. a car charger or a portable power pack, can also be used to connect the recharging unit. As lithium ion batteries are sensitive to warmer temperatures, it is important that you never leave your rechargeable hearing aids in the car (when you are not wearing them) as the battery can deteriorate. If you would like to explore some options regarding rechargeable hearing aids, please call Wangaratta Audiology on 5722 4433.

the gatherings, which will be held on the second Wednesday of each month, and these guests will be tailored to what local people would like to know more about. Mandy Cavanagh, nurse unit manager of the cancer and wellness centre at Northeast Health Wangaratta which has been in operation since April, welcomed the concept of the support group for locals, ensuring both professional and peer support services were on offer. The prostate cancer support group will hold its first meeting on Wednesday, June 9 in the meeting room at the Northo in Spearing Street from 7.30pm to 8.30pm. Members are welcome to come along earlier, from 6.45pm, for dinner prior to the meeting, and partners are most welcome to attend. GONE FISHING
nemedia.com.au
TECH & SCIENCE
with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ MUD MARLIN: A giant Lake Moodemere ‘Mud Marlin’ caught the morning before lockdown.
Carp provide some fun, even in state’s lockdown AS I type Victoria remains in a seven day lockdown. I will be writing this report based on the lockdown ending this Friday. The day before the lockdown commenced I went fishing at Lake Moodemere. I fished from 6.45am until 9.30am and in that time I managed to catch three carp and lose two others. Considering how cold the water is, I was quite pleased with that result. All of my carp were caught using corn as bait. With the commencement of the lockdown, the Victorian Government has said that we can still go fishing as long as it is no more than 5km from home and for no longer than two hours (maximum for exercise). On Sunday afternoon I managed to catch a big carp here in Wangaratta using worms as bait. That was the only bite that I had. So many people hate carp but I have to admit that without them I would not be catching very many fish at the moment. I enjoy my winter carp fishing a lot as it is both fun and relaxing. June 1 is the opening day of the
with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA Murray crayfishing season. We are allowed to go provided we stick to the COVID regulations as mentioned above. I have no idea how the crayfishing will be, but worth noting that I have not caught one on my fishing rod yet. At this time of the year it is not uncommon to catch one or two on worms while fishing for other species, but lately this has not happened to me. Hopefully it is not a bad sign of a slow season to come. Lake Hume still continues to produce redfin for some lucky anglers. Some are missing out while others are finding decent schools of fish. Hopefully the lockdown is lifted this weekend so that anglers from Victoria can head up there and cash in on the Lake Hume redfin bonanza of 2021.
◆ HIGHS AND LOWS: Despite a huge plummet in value recently, the cost to mine Bitcoin rises constantly.
Cryptocurrency has a green problem IF you’ve been following the cryptocurrency phenomenon at all recently, you’d be well aware that Bitcoin - often touted as the ‘Netflix’ of cryptocurrencies - took a massive hit to its value in the middle of May after reaching an all time high in April. While huge peaks and troughs are a defining trait of this fledgling currency, the latest events surrounding Bitcoin have raised a number of red flags, leading a number of finance experts to reiterate their concerns about crypto investment. So what are some of these concerns, and what caused the crash in price for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies? Elon Musk’s Twitter feed Ultimately, the primary reason for Bitcoin’s unprecedented price surge and subsequent plummet was CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk. Alongside Bitcoin, Etheruem, Dogecoin (of meme origin), and other cryptocurrencies prices seem to hinge on his every tweet. To many, the fact that a self-described ‘eccentric’ billionaire can add or wipe billions of the value of a currency in a matter of hours places crypto purchases outside the realm of ‘investment’ and more firmly in the realm of speculating, or even gambling. Warren Buffet, considered one of the most successful investors in the world, described cryptocurrency as “probably rat poison squared” in 2018, and is yet to have changed his mind about it.
Still, that hasn’t stopped a swell of interest from the public, with Finder. com.au reporting that 13% of Australians owned cryptocurrency at the beginning of 2021. This new green isn’t very ‘green’ There is one critical problem underlying these latest market developments - spelled out plainly by Elon Musk himself when he triggered this latest dive in the price of the most famous cryptocurrency - mining Bitcoin is not green. In fact it’s far from it. And the cost in fossil fuels to mine Bitcoin rises exponentially as more computers mine it, and there are fewer coins to mine. This is a design feature of Bitcoin. In the simplest terms, to ensure the authenticity and integrity of Bitcoin, a computer must be the first to solve complex algorithms attached to a given coin. The few coins available, the more complex the algorithms, and the more powerful and energy-consuming the computer must be to solve the algorithms. In 2021, the grand total energy consumed to mine Bitcoin exceeds that of many countries. In February, it was estimated that Bitcoin consumes around 121.36 terawatt-hours per year, roughly 70 per cent of Australia’s annual energy consumption, and it’s expected that it will exceed 200 terawatt hours in the nottoo-distant future.
Local people, local places ...immerse yourself in the region
To put that into perspective, Bitcoin currently consumes around 100 terawatt hours more than Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Apple data centres combined. And while the tech giants provide service globally, Bitcoin serves almost no one. Ultimately it makes perfect sense for Musk to have pulled the pin on Bitcoin, as it simply does not align with his vision of energy efficient vehicles. The only real pertinent question is, why didn’t he do it sooner? Other currencies are investigating and developing alternative mining methods, but none seem to have really gained broad public traction as yet. One of the more famous examples, Chia (invented by Bram Cohen of BitTorrent fame), inadvertently caused widespread shortage of hard-drive components due to the fact that his cryptocurrency requires large amounts of storage instead of processing power. But as many have pointed out, consigning tonnes of burnt out hard drives to landfill hardly seems like a viable green alternative. Until such an alternative is discovered, the market volatility of crytopcurrency will likely remain, and its practical application as a decentralised currency will likewise remain limited. *Please note: I am not a financial adviser, and this article should be considered speculative in nature. A family tradition that keeps on giving THERE is one simple way to perfect the art of salami making according to Tony LaSpina from Whorouly. Practise. “There are a lot of myths about salami making but I have a saying; the more you do the more you learn,” he said. The Queen’s Birthday weekend in June is the traditional start of salami making season with the LaSpinas using the three days to gather family members to join in the process. Tony has been developing his skill for more than 40 years, following a family tradition that goes much farther back than the family’s two generations in Australia. “We were making salami before I was married but, due largely to my father-in-law, after that we went full bore into it,” he said. “Now there are seven families that come together on the long weekend and pitch in; we’ll go from dawn to dusk depending on how much wine we have the night before.” They will make around 500-600 salamis that weekend for their own consumption during the year, all to bŧŠƠ̥ź͂źĵīŶĵƁ͂ĝŠı͂ƚĵřř͂Ŷĵǰ͂Šĵı͂Ŷĵīʼnųĵ˳˳
“It’s a ritual for us now,” he said. “It’s important to me and my family to have everyone together.” The key foundation of any good salami is the meat according to Tony. “You must have good meat from a nice mature animal - free range - and make sure they are happy animals,” he said. “We have people who raise them for us and they come to us fully grown. “We’ll do about seven animals all up.” He encouraged others to give salami making a try. “It seems everyone is making salami these days,” Tony said. “I believe you can make ordinary salami or extraordinary salami, it just takes practise. “But people are getting better at it.” His number one job now is to clean ŧƅƁ͂Ɓņĵ͂źņĵı͂Ɓŧ͂īĝƁĵŶ͂ŀŧŶ͂Ɓņĵ͂ʼnŠDZ͂ƅƟ͂ŧŀ͂ visitors. “We could have up to 30 or 40 turn up,” Tony said. “We eat in the shed, some even sleep in the shed, but that’s mainly the young men. “Even the young ones love coming out and getting involved.”

Get all your supplies for making salami and charcuterie meats in one place MY Slice of Life is full to the brim with ingredients, products and gear you will need to make your own homemade salami and charcuterie meats. The art of making the perfect salami is a talent worth bragging about according to My Slice of Life owner Brent Ibrom. “The process itself is relatively simple, but there are many finer intricacies that you will need to get on top of before you can call yourself a true salami master,” he said. “There isn’t much new on the machine or gear front from us, especially with COVID; stock has been hard enough to get as it is let alone producing anything new, besides once you’ve got all your hardware it’s a matter of produce. “We’ve recently developed seven different flavour packs which are really good for people starting out; every year we get people jumping on board the salami train so these give them some confidence. “My advice for people starting out would be to buy good meat first of all and keep it simple, don’t overthink it; many new salami makers fall into the trap of

over complicating the process in terms of flavour. “A lot of them enjoy themselves and catch up with mates and may indulged in beverages while making it and it’s a fairly lengthy process so they might want to put in a little bit of this and that. “My advice is follow recipes, or note down what you’ve done so you can replicate it the following year. “In terms of buying produce it’s the same old story, but this year in particular, order ahead and don’t expect to grab what you need right away; be organised.” Their salami making supplies range include casings, cotton twine, electric meat slicers, netting, netting tubes, salami fillers/ stuffers, spices and additives, vacuum pouches and vacuum sealers. You can purchase any of these products online at https://mysliceoflife.com.au/ or visit the retail store at 159 Vincent Rd, Wangaratta. Mates create their own salami magic FOR Paul Oats and Dan Wallace, a spur of the moment decision 10 years ago to try their hand at salami making has led to an annual tradition that gets bigger every year. “Dan (from Everyday Gourmet) had been making sausages for years and was also selling more and more salami and suggested we should have a go at making some ourselves,” Paul said. “Really it was just an excuse for Dan and I and a group of mates to get together one weekend and have some fun. “Julian Rett showed us how to do it at the start,” Paul said. “We’ve been doing it for 10 years now and it’s grown to around 20 blokes and their families ranging in age from ǰ͂ƙĵ͂Ɓŧ͂ʒʍ˳ “It’s just a great way for everyone to catch up once a year.” To avoid clashing with the June long weekend when many families go away on holidays, the Oats/Wallace salami operation takes place on the Saturday after when they all gather at Paul’s shed.
HANDS ON: Salami making is a very hands on experience, which can be quite a chilly challenge during winter.
“Dan brings the product I organise everyone and everything else,” he said. “It starts around 6.30am ƚņĵŠ͂ ƚĵ͂ īŶĝīŗ͂ Ɓņĵ͂ ǰ͂Ŷĵź͂ ƅų˸͂ your hands get pretty cold when you’re mixing the mince and everything by hand.” They produce two versions ŧŀ͂źĝřĝşʼn˸͂ʕʍ͂ųĵŶ͂īĵŠƁ͂ƚʼnƁņ͂ĝ͂ fair amount of chilli and 20 per cent with less chilli.
Paul said there are not too many secrets about making your own salami except to ensure the mix is spot on. “Make sure you do the preparation of the mix by hand and ensure the salt is distributed thoroughly through it,” he said. “Last year we made around 400kg with our own recipe. “It’s great fun but it is a big day!”
