Following art from Wangaratta to the NT
By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE
◆ CURATOR: Luke Scholes has a passion for all things art.
ART has been woven through Luke Scholes’ life since a young age. The former Wangaratta High School student who is now artist and curator of Aboriginal art at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory said he inherited his passion from his father. “Dad was a very gifted artist; he could draw, paint and make jewellery,” he said. “My brother Mason, sister Brenna and I were always in awe of Dad’s ability to draw. “Whenever we travelled,
we always went to galleries. “When visiting Melbourne or Canberra we would always visit the big institutions; the National Gallery of Victoria and the National Gallery of Australia. “Art was something that Dad was really interested in and it just felt natural that I too would be drawn to it. “Artistically Dad was obviously a huge influence,” he said. “So, too, many of the teachers I encountered at Wangaratta High School.

FEATURE STORY
Wombat survival is under threat WOMBATS are under threat and they need our help. Wombat survival is being impacted by a parasitic mite, causing Sarcoptic Mange and human activities. Citizen scientists are being called on by WomSAT.org.au to help collect information about the lives of wombats so these important ecosystem engineers can be conserved. Wombats are Australia’s largest burrow builder and are essential in maintaining soil health and modifying habitats, including building burrows that provide shelter for a range of other species. What information is needed to help protect wombats? We want to know where wombats are, if they have mange or not, and if there are burrows nearby. We also want to know about other impacts on wombats. How you can help? You can easily help by recording where and when you observe a wombat, either dead or alive on the WomSAT Google Map. If the wombat is alive, please record whether you think it has Sarcoptic Mange
PET CORNER WANGARATTA RSPCA has many lovable creatures waiting for the perfect family to take them home. If you want to add a furry friend to your home, contact the RSPCA on (03) 5722 2874. with With Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife (information can be found here at the WomSAT wombat mange page) or not, and if it is nearby to a wombat burrow. What will the information be used for? The data collected will be used to aid conservation of the species by mapping mange incidence throughout Australia, and identifying other threats to these unique animals. It will aid in determining where mange is more prevalent or less prevalent among the wombat population and ensure their continued survival. We will also be documenting where wombats are becoming victims of motor vehicle collisions, or other human impacts, and help to put strategies in place to prevent these deaths. Overall we aim to improve our understanding of wombat biology and ecology. For more information and to take part, visit www.womsat.org.au.
◆ ABORIGINAL ART APPRECIATION: Part of the impressive display Luke Scholes looks after as the curator of Aboriginal art at the Museum and Art Galley of the Northern Territory.
Following art from Wangaratta to NT “Mum was also a huge influence on my life, though more in her passion for language and reading. “My life was changed after I came to Central Australia; the landscape just got into me and I continue to be in awe of how beautiful it is here and how fascinating life is in the Northern Territory. “More recently a great number of Aboriginal artists have become an influence.” When he was young, Luke’s Dad often travelled to central Australia on school trips with Wangaratta High School. “He always returned with small but significant presents for us kids, normally something unique to the Northern Territory,” he said. “It was undoubtedly Dad’s passion for Central Australia and the Northern Territory that inspired my passion for Aboriginal art. “Dad admired the skill of, particularly, Aboriginal bark painters and his interest became mine. “Initially I worked for Papunya Tula Artists, an Aboriginal owned and directed arts centre from the
western desert region of the Northern Territory and Western Australia. “I began as a field officer working with artists in remote areas and soon after it became an assistant manager. “I went on to work for other Aboriginal art centres in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and then, much later, I had the opportunity to work in the Indigenous art department at the National Gallery Victoria for two years. “Not long after that I returned to Central Australia and was employed by the Museum of Art Gallery of the Northern Territory where I have remained for the past six years.” In Luke’s role, every year he curates the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (NATSIAA). “It is the longest running, most prestigious awards dedicated to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists,” he said. “I’ve also curated two major exhibitions over the past six years; Tjungunutja: from having come to-
gether, focused upon the genesis of the contemporary Aboriginal art movement and, more recently, I curated a survey exhibition of the Yolngu artist Nyapanyapa Yunupingu. “I am also in charge of developing the museum’s collection; we have one of the most significant collections of Indigenous art in Australia and its ongoing development is one of my tasks. “I have an incredibly challenging role. “As a non-indigenous curator of Aboriginal art, the cross cultural divide is something I’m very conscious and respectful of. “I am lucky to be able to travel to remote areas of Australia to visit artists and their studios and to help bring their tremendous knowledge and abilities to a broader audience. “I love where I live now and the experiences I’ve had; Wangaratta was a tremendous place to grow up in, I am thankful for the childhood I experienced, for all the wonderful friends I made and the memories I keep.”

This Day in History, 1899 THE Great Southern mine in Rutherglen was the scene of a daring payroll robbery. There were two hold-up men, John Henry Sparks and John Negus. They had given some thought to their hold-up plan, but not enough - they were captured soon afterwards in Collingwood, tried at Beechworth, and were sentenced to 12 years in prison. The loot, supposed to be over ÂŁ1000, was not found.
Tips for getting the Christmas messages right this season THERE have been lots of unexpected communication challenges to cope with this year due to restrictions on travel and size of gatherings. These challenges include more phone calls, learning to navigate Zoom sessions and coping without visual clues due to mask wearing. We hope that this Christmas will provide a nice opportunity to catch up with lots of family and friends. This year we have generally had quieter listening situations, which has been of beneďŹ t to people with hearing loss. On the other hand, masks have made communication harder with no lip reading clues. As the holiday period arrives, there may be more occasions with background noise where our family members with hearing problems will be experiencing extra difficulty. Here are some ways people with hearing loss can get prepared: t %PO U CF UPP IBSE PO ZPVSTFMG JG ZPV

◆ YUMMY YABBIES: Any waterway that has yabbies in it is worth throwing a net into at the moment. This is a great time of the year to go yabbying.
Murray cod season is open, so let’s go fishing IT’S here - by the time this report goes to print the Murray cod season will be open and what an exciting time of the year it is for so many keen anglers. Most of the mid to low stretches of the rivers right across Northern Victoria have a healthy population of Murray cod. Many are stocked annually with cod, and some (Including the Ovens and Buffalo rivers) are naturally recruiting fish. Despite last year’s bushfires there are still Murray cod in the Upper Murray River and it’s tributaries - the Corryong Creek and Cudgewa Creek. Recent surveys by fisheries have proven that there are still Murray cod up there, but exactly how many is a bit of an unknown. Some of areas around the region worth hitting up this cod season include: Mitta Mitta River down stream of Eskdale; Kiewa River downstream of Dederang; Ovens River from Myrtleford downstream (and a little bit upstream); Buffalo River below Lake Buffalo; King River from Whitfield downstream (there’s a few upstream as well but not as many deep holes); Broken River from Lake Nillahcootie downstream (access is easiest downstream

Each and every one of these waterways will be worth fishing this cod season, along with the Murray River including Lake Mulwala. For those not interested in Murray cod fishing, Lake Hume is producing some fantastic yellowbelly and redfin, and Lake Nillahcootie is still ticking over nicely with some nice yellowbelly being caught. The trout streams are starting to warm up, but for now the trout are still quite active thanks to some decent flows of water. One last thing, the yabbies are on the bite everywhere. The hardest part is finding somewhere to go yabbying, but if you have access to a good dam there’s not a better time of the year to throw the nets in.
with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ REMOTE: Working from home, and the awkward and funny moments when a pet or family member interupts your online meeting, was the staple of 2020 - but how many businesses will continue this flexible working arrangement?
How COVID will change IT OVER the course of 2020, it’s been easy to see how the IT landscape in workplaces has altered dramatically. Zoom and Google meets, remote working and QR code sign-ins are something the majority of us have participated in. But, as resritctions now begin to ease, the question becomes - how many of these changes are here to stay, and what technologies will be expanded upon? Stress will becomes routine For a long time, IT professionals and IT service providers have made sure to conduct regular stress testing of business systems deemed critical to daily operations. Still, it’s a safe bet that the majority of VPN systems and remote access solutions were never a part of those tests. They simply weren’t used by a large enough portion of the workforce to rate regular testing. If the coronavirus crisis will change anything, it will be the way that IT providers classify technology as “mission-critical”. For that reason, it’s easy to predict that network-wide stress testing will become standard operating procedure for the majority of businesses and the IT professionals that manage their networks. It’s going to become necessary to make sure that WAN-side services can handle a complete traffic reversal like the one that many businesses have now been forced to accommodate.
It’s a scenario that many never planned for, and the cost of failure in a situation such as this one could deal a death blow to many businesses. Moves to the cloud will accelerate Before the coronavirus crisis, adoption of cloud technologies was slow and grudual. Needless to say, that has hampered the ability of many organisations to reallocate resources to support workers who are now forced to work outside of their offices. It shouldn’t take long after businesses start getting back to normal to see many accelerating their plans to move additional workloads to the cloud. It’s the smartest way for them to gain the flexibility needed to handle any eventuality, as well as to decrease technology operating expenses going forward. Flexibility will become standardised Even before the coronavirus crisis, businesses of all kinds had started to embrace things like flexible work schedules and remote work policies to provide a better employee experience. That’s even why so many businesses had turned to coworking spaces in lieu of permanent office space over the past few years. Businesses that did so also tended to embrace IT concepts like bring-your-owndevice (BYOD) to help support their nomadic workforces.

After the coronavirus crisis passes, more businesses will rush to adopt standardised IT solutions to support BYOD and other flexible technology initiatives. Instead of spending their IT budgets on company-owned devices, they’ll start spending it on a management infrastructure to enforce company technology policy on employee devices instead. Automation technology will boom Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotic process automation (RPI) have slowly started to work their way into businesses around the world. In many cases, the first exposure that companies have had to the technology has been in the form of marketing automation software. Larger organisations have even started the process of automating routine day-today tasks wherever possible. In a post-coronavirus environment, it’s almost a certainty that businesses will begin adopting automation wherever it is currently possible and will continue to invest in such technologies going forward. They’ll do so because it’s the surest way to minimize future business disruptions like the one they’re dealing with now. After all, computers aren’t affected by global pandemics, and automated systems tend to require only minimal maintenance and human intervention in most cases.
