A year to remember By BELINDA HARRISON

WHEN Cate Looney applied for a job at Brown Family Wine Group (BFWG) in 2005, she couldn’t have imagined she would be nominated, let alone win, Winemaker of the Year at the Australian Women in Wine Awards (AWIWA) in 2020. Completing a Bachelor in Wine Science at Charles Sturt University, Cate combined her studies with working in the university’s commercial winery before moving onto Scotchman’s Hill Winery in Geelong. “It was a great training ground to be able to study to be a winemaker and then put what I was learning into practice at the same place,” she said. “I was working at Scotchman’s Hill when I saw the position at Brown Brothers advertised. “I knew the brand and reputation within the industry so I applied, and happily I got the job and moved to North East Victoria for my first vintage in 2006.” In 2016, Cate was promoted to senior winemaker and has become a leader in Moscato winemaking in Australia. She oversees the day to day operations of the 20,000 tonne Milawa winery and has been the driving force behind the Patricia and NonVintage Pinot Noir Chardonnay wines, which are two of the most awarded sparkling wines in Australia.

Haemangiosarcoma “HAEMANGIO-WHAT” I hear you say! Haemangiosarcoma (‘He-man-giosar-coma’) is a malignant tumour of the spleen which is common in dogs. We recently removed one, weighing 3kg from the abdomen of a dog. What is the spleen? The spleen is an oblong-shaped organ that sits just below the stomach. It has a number of functions, all related to the circulatory system. It provides blood during emergencies, e.g. massive blood loss, infection, inflammation. It is essentially natures blood transfusion. It helps to remove old blood cells from the circulation. It cleans up red blood cells that have been marked by the immune system. This helps to keep cells functioning at optimal levels that would otherwise be damaged if allowed to continue circulating. It also acts as a lymph node to assess material in the circulation and remove it, if it is seen as foreign. Splenic tumours

with Ellie Merritt, Warby Street Veterinary Clinic Tumours of the spleen occasionally occur and are either benign tumours (haemangioma) or malignant (haemangiosarcoma). Haemangionsarcomas are aggressive cancers and spread quickly, usually to the lungs and base of the heart. Due to the vascular nature of the spleen, tumours (benign or malignant) in this organ may rupture and this is life-threatening. Splenectomy, removal of the spleen is the only treatment for splenic tumours and the only way to prevent or massive amounts of blood loss. When the tumour is benign, splenectomy will be curative. When we are dealing with a haemangiosarcoma, often there is metastatic spread, so removal is palliative only.

Gardening in a changing climate

WE live in a beautiful area of Australia. From the Alpine peaks and foothills of the Great Dividing Range to the river floodplains, we have diverse and interesting landscapes. Traditionally, our climate was dry temperate, with four distinct seasons, however this situation is changing, and much more rapidly than we previously expected. At the end of each summer, as I take stock of how my garden has fared, I can’t help but ponder what impact our changing climate is having locally, and what it means for our future gardening choices. Do some of the plants we love really fit in this environment? Is there more we can do to plan for a changing climate? As gardeners, how can we help mitigate the impacts? The first step is to understand what is happening. The Bureau of Meteorology’s annual climate statement, issued in January 2021, reports that the warmest and second-warmest years on record are 2019 and 2016, and eight of the last ten years have been amongst the ten warmest on record. Those are scary statistics, when you consider that the temperature records go back to 1910. Last year was notable for the extreme heat and bushfires early

in the year, and then a switch to above average rainfall and La Nina conditions in the spring for most of south-eastern Australia. Heatwaves also affected large parts of eastern Australia in November. Although there is uncertainty of how our changing climate will manifest - there are some very likely impacts in our region. The key messages from official government projections are that our climate is becoming: 1. Hotter Average temperatures will continue to increase in all seasons (very high confidence) More hot days and warm spells (very high confidence) Fewer frosts (high confidence) 2. Drier Less rainfall during the cool season by late this century (high confidence) Unchanged rainfall in the warm season (medium confidence) 3. More Unpredictable Harsher fire weather climate (high confidence) Heavy rainfall intensity to increase, despite declining mean annual rainfall (high confidence) In 2015, the CSIRO released an ‘Analogues Explorer’2, which is an online tool showing projections for

future climate across Australia. The tool predicts that by 2050, the climate in Wangaratta will be equivalent to the current day climate in Dubbo. That’s 600km to our north. The good news is that, as gardeners, we can adapt to these changes and also play a part in mitigating them. We can choose to adopt water wise gardening practices and garden more sustainably. Some practical examples of adaptation include watering less often and more deeply, applying mulch, improving the soil structure, using shade cloth to protect plants, planting shade trees, grouping plants by water need and selecting plants already adapted to the changing conditions. Some examples of mitigation include providing habitat for local wildlife, recycling our organic waste as compost, recycling our water, and choosing sustainably sourced garden products. There are a lot of resources and tools at hand to help us meet this challenge. A simple web search for ‘sustainable gardening’ for example, will bring up many options. We can all observe, learn and adapt, even without perfect knowledge. So, how will you respond to gardening in a changing climate?

Love Bug

King Valley Prosecco OVER the last year or so, many of us have found more time on our hands and one of the beneďŹ ts has been rediscovering the written word. We’ve gone back to our bookshelves, clicked and collected from libraries and bookshops and begged and borrowed novels from family and friends, preferring print on paper to another minute more of screen time. It’s great to hear how varied people’s interests are; the ones that devour romance novels, can’t-put-down crime ďŹ ction or crave the supernatural, and others for whom biographies are the go-to. Then there are those of us who dip and dive between them all, happy to follow up a challenging Booker Prize winner with a lighter piece of feel-good uff for pure pleasure and entertainment. For the same kinds of reasons I’m not going to drink from the top shelf or the dustiest part of the cellar every night of the week. While it’s great to sip spectacularly handcrafted ďŹ ne wine there are other times when it’s more about the company than what’s in the glass, and that’s when you want a fresh, fun crowd pleaser.

So Prosecco is the go, from the King Valley of course. The Love Bug King Valley Prosecco pours with exuberance, full of noisy bubbles and surging with excited white froth. It’s bright and lightly fruity, with a pleasing apple and lemon sherbet zing. Enjoy it well chilled, and with only a hint of sweetness, it makes a great choice for predinner drinks and nibbles or with light lunch dishes. Now that’s what I call a happy ending. About $17.

This Day in History, 1896 THE Wangaratta Free Library and Museum opened on this day in 1896. Not the impressive turn of the century edifice we see today, but certainly in a more central location to its previous home at the corner or Ovens and Ford streets. Residents of the town and district were advised that the curator or his assistance would be on hand all day, and that reduced rates of membership would apply.

Further fuelling the likelihood of increased fruit fly numbers is the severe shortage of pickers as a result of covid restrictions and the inability of pickers to enter Victoria, which has forced some growers to leave fruit on their trees. Home gardeners and property owners across the GMV should remain on high alert for fruit fly activity and take action to minimise the impact of the pest.

A year to remember - Australian Women in Wine Awards Ŷ

From page 1

“We make wines using alternative varieties and work with some CSIRO varieties that have been developed to suit the Australian growing conditions,” Cate explained. “They’re interesting to work with but also challenging as they’re a blank canvas for a winemaker to work out what style will best enhance the fruit flavours.” In contrast to the number of awards their wines have received, Cate’s naming as a finalist in the AWIWA was a first for the Brown Family Wine Group. “Cate is such a highly regarded and awarded winemaker and we are so proud of her achievement,” Brown Brothers spokesperson Katherine Brown said. The awards - which are owned and operated by The

Fabulous Ladies’ Wine Society are the only awards program for women in wine in the world. They acknowledge and reward the work of women in the wine community, as well as community leaders who champion equality and fairness for all sexes in the workplace, with support and mentor components. In October, Cate was named as one of the three finalists for Winemaker of the Year along with winemakers from Tasmania and South Australia and the awards were live streamed on November 24. “Anyone can nominate you but they have to provide a valid reason why you should be in the running,” Cate said. “I had to accept the nomination and provide some details on recent achievements to show my eligibility as well.

“I wasn’t nervous while we were watching the live stream as I didn’t think I had any chance of winning. “I was thrilled just to be nominated as the other two finalists are great winemakers so it was a big surprise when my name was read out and I won. “It was nice to be recognised for my winemaking of course and I hope that the next generation of female winemakers see there are opportunities for career advancement in the industry but more than that, it’s really great to get to fly the flag for Brown Brothers as they have been so supportive of me in my career. “They have provided a workplace that has fantastic culture and I couldn’t have achieved what I have without the great winemaking team at Brown’s.”

While Cate enjoys trying a number of different wines, her favourite drop for summer sipping is the Brown Brothers NonVintage Pinot Noir Chardonnay or a Prosecco. “These are not wines that I would put in the cellar to age, they’re better going straight in the fridge and enjoying with friends,” she said. The Pinot Noir in particular takes patience to create but Cate said the reward is all in the taste. “The grapes are normally picked mid to late February and are processed into juice at the winery, this goes through fermentation resulting in our base wine,” she said. “We look at blends to combine the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in August and prepare the wine for its secondary fer-

mentation, which occurs in bottle to create the bubbles. “That’s usually in December and then the wine sits in bottle

for two years before we remove the yeast and add liqueur, so it really is quite a process, but one that’s well worth it.”

GONE FISHING

â—† YUMMY YABBIES: A few very large yabbies line the bottom of a 20 litre bucket, caught on private property in Wangaratta last week. If entering private property, remember to always ask the farmer for permission.

Dirty rivers, but fishing still an option with By Roberta Horne, AgBiz Assist with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA ing very well. I have had quite a few photos sent to me from there last week including one photo of a 100cm Murray cod that was caught from the bank using worms by an angler targeting yellowbelly. With the rivers being quite dirty, and many areas are also quite high, I suspect that bait will be the best way to target Murray cod. Cheese is one of the most commonly used baits for Murray cod and will work well in dirty water, so too will bardi grubs and worms. With more rain in the forecast the conditions of the rivers by the end of the week is a bit of an unknown, but for now they’re still ďŹ shable with bait being the best option.

â—† HELPING YOU MOOOVE: Victorian dairy farmers can take advantage of the free, independent and conďŹ dential Agbiz Assist Dedicated Dairy Support program.

Extra support for dairy farmers IN recognition of the unique and ongoing needs of the dairy industry, the Victorian Government has expanded funding to provide a Dedicated Dairy Support program run by the AgBiz Assist team, which has been working with farming enterprises for more than 30 years. While to date nearly 70 northern Victorian dairy farmers have taken advantage of the free, independent and conďŹ dential service that the program offers, there is still plenty of scope for more participation. Our team of agribusiness and dairy specialists assist dairy farmers with making hard decisions about scaling the dairy business up or down, succession planning or maybe looking at alternative enterprises. An additional beneďŹ t of the Agbiz Assist Dedicated Dairy Support pro-

gram is possible access to extra specialist services such as dairy consultants, accounting, legal and succession planning advice with funding of up to $5,000 for eligible participants. Many dairy farmers report that the day-to-day running of their enterprise becomes all-encompassing and this is where the assistance provided by our team can be most helpful. They will work with you to help provide a clearer understanding of your ďŹ nancial position and future viability within the dairy industry as well as assessing other enterprise options. This approach frequently includes conversations about how to make a start with succession planning and can involve difficult negotiations to meet the needs and interests of both the outgoing and incoming parties. Once these discussions have been initiated

with the farming family, the next steps can then be more readily managed. There’s no doubt about it, succession planning can be difficult at the best of times as it is so much more than just the transfer of assets. A well developed and executed plan will provide a smoother transition by minimising the effect of unfavourable future ďŹ nancial and taxation implications and strained inter-family relationships. AgBiz Assist can help you make a start with this process. As always, our best advice is to never self-assess. It only takes a quick phone call to us on 1300 834 775 to easily check your eligibility then arrange a face to face, telephone or video meeting with a Dedicated Dairy Support specialist to establish what assistance may be available for your dairy enterprise.

LAST week’s welcome rainfall has dirtied the rivers, but do not stress.. there’s still plenty of ďŹ shing options. Now is a great time of the year to catch yabbies. Yabbies become very active during the height of summer. I went to a dam on private property during the week and caught 16 very large yabbies. If you are going yabbying, look for farm dams that are very dirty - the dirtier the better. The biggest yabbies tend to come from the really dirty farm dams. Yabbies can be caught from clear water too, however they are usually found down deeper, or are more active after dark. They feel safer in dirty water where they can not be seen, because everything easts them including birds, ďŹ sh and me. Lake William Hovell is starting to produce a few redďŹ n. I have not heard of any big ones being caught, but I know they are in there. I have caught a few small ones myself over the last week and have heard of a few other catches of small redďŹ n. Lake Nillahcootie is still ďŹ sh-
