It’s been a very interesting 50 years on the job for Terry
By GEORGIE WILSON
AT just 23 Terry Weldon joined the Lands Department in January, 1973 at Yackandandah. After nearly 50 years of service he is an expert on the department, he can track to the day its progress from NRE, DSE, DEPI to DELWP and everything in between. But no matter what acronym he has worked for, Terry wouldn’t change a thing. “It’s been the best years of my life,” he said. “Gosh, the people I have seen over the years since I have been in the job, I tell you what, there has been some very good people.” Terry, now 72, said he has no complaints about his job whatsoever and is retiring with mixed feelings. “It’s just a pity you get old hey,” he said. In 1973 the Lands Department undertook a lot of work for farmers including spraying, rabbit control and weed control, a period with very fond memories for Terry. “It really was the good old days,” he said. Terry took on his firefighting role when he and his crew moved from Myrtleford to the Ovens Depot in 2001.

Grass seeds sowing trouble in your pet THE warmer weather means it’s time for barbeques and swimming. However, for your pet it can mean a time of grass seed infections which can cause a lot of pain for your pet and frustration for you. Grass seeds most commonly imbed into pets’ ears and eyes, up the nose, between the toes, along the belly, or around the bottom. Depending on where the grass seed is located your pet will show different signs from painful ears, head tilt or head shaking due to irritated ears, snorting and sneezing from the nose, weepy eyes, lameness or small swellings that discharge pus. Grass seeds require removal as while they sit in the body, whatever the location, they stimulate infection and inflammation. Often the longer they are left, the harder they are to remove, the more extensive the procedure and treatment required. Grass seeds left in ears can rupture the ear drum leading to middle ear infections, while grass seeds left untreated in the skin or between the feet
with Dr Maddison McGill, Wangaratta Veterinary Clinic can migrate around the body making them harder to retrieve. Some things you can do to prevent grass seeds include avoiding long dry grass, clipping long haired dogs to allow for easier detection, checking their feet and brushing the pet daily. Unfortunately, it is harder to prevent grass seeds in the ears or up the nose but looking for signs can mean earlier intervention and less complications. If you believe your dog may have a grass seed anywhere on (or in) its body, it is a good idea to make an appointment with your vet. If you can’t see a grass seed but you have any of the signs above, it’s best to book your pet in to have a vet check as soon as possible. Most pets will require sedation or a general anaesthetic to allow the vet to explore, remove the grass seed safely and treat the area properly.

WHILST the Melbourne Cup long weekend might symbolise time off and a famous horse race for some, for naturopaths and herbalists it’s a reminder that it’s elderflower season. During spring we see the explosion of white creamy floral scented flowers burst into bloom on country road sides in our area. This three to four metre tall deciduous tree can also be grown easily in most gardens in the North East.

The stunning flowers are followed by the dark purple/black berries that are famous for fighting bugs, viruses and all things winter sniffles. Traditionally the whole plant is utilised in teas, cordials, syrups and tinctures using the flower, berries, bark and roots. Campbells of Rutherglen 2018 Bobbie Burns Shiraz THEY say challenging times bring out the best and the worst in people and that certainly has rung true during the pandemic. It has shone a light on how selfish we humans can be, and perhaps because we had it so good for so long - many of us struggled with the concept of abiding by a few rules for the greater good. As we come out the other side of the crisis I hope we’ve learnt some lessons - that we’ll be a little kinder to the people around us, appreciate how lucky we are and make the most of every opportunity. More than once in recent times the old adage ‘life’s too short to drink bad wine’ has come up in my head, so it’s a pleasure to know Campbell’s Bobbie Burns Shiraz is often on hand. This full bodied wine has a deep crimson red colour and from the moment you pour the powerful aroma of rich plum fruit and warm oak draws you in. The flavour is deep, complex and savoury; there’s plum fruit, earthy wild blackberry and a hint of black pepper. It’s a great match for a chargrilled ribeye, the savouriness countering the sweet, fatty meat. It also happens to come in the Zonta Entertainer pack of six wines, available online, with

This Day in History, 1872 MICHAEL Langford was one of Beechworth’s first publicans, keeping the Beechworth Hotel, which became the Star Hotel. He also conducted the El Dorado Hotel. He later went into government service and was stationed at Tumbarumba at the time of his death. His funeral took place on this day in 1872.
Local people, local places
HAYFEVER symptoms are so prevalent this year. Allergies occur when your immune system reacts to a foreign substance such as pollen, bee stings, pet hair fibres or foods. Allergies can come in many shapes and sizes. While some people can enjoy beautiful weather, others avoid going outdoors at all costs. The same situation may occur for people watching others enjoy an endless variety of foods while they must be very selective. Those people who suffer from the incessant symptoms of food or environmental allergies may wonder, why? Have you ever wondered what causes your stuffy nose and sneezing? It’s not just a string of bad luck; whether your allergy symptoms occur in direct result to the local pollen count, different types of food or your neighbour’s cat, there are certain responses from your immune system that lead to your level of reaction. The body’s immune system generates different antibodies to pro-
O NO UT W
tect us from illnesses. For allergies, the immune system generates Immunoglobulin E, also known as IgE, to aid in combating your allergy symptoms. IgE is a chemical messenger that travels to cells to relay information that a chemical defence against a foreign invader is needed. Allergic individuals have high IgE levels against benign environmental exposures such as pollen or hair fibres. Foods can also cause high levels of IgE. Allergies can develop at any point in a person’s life. One factor that increases your chance is your family history. If one parent is allergic there is a 3050% chance of their offspring developing allergies. This jumps to 60-80% if both parents are allergic. In many cases, allergies first present early in life, during infancy or the toddler years. Most of these allergies will be lifelong concerns, although some can resolve on their own. In order to deal with our allergies we
need to find out the triggers that are causing these reactions. This can be done through a comprehensive allergy test. By using an Electro Magnetic Machine (AT2000 Allergy Tester) you can be tested for up to 290 different allergens. A test can also be done via a hair sample. The allergens that we can test for include foods, dust, pollens, soaps, petrol, chemicals, metals, bacteria/fungus, moulds, candida, bees and other insects, hair fibres, materials and chemicals. You can also send/bring in anything from home or work such as a piece of carpet, a chemical you work with, creams, makeup or anything from your garden to be tested. Desensitising drops can then be made to reduce the reaction to these foods and chemicals, combined with avoidance where possible. Call Christos at the Wangaratta Wellness Centre on (03) 5798 3344 if you would like to book an appointment for a test or to discuss your situation.

Fishing good, but yabbies offer great family alternative THE combination of fine weather, great water conditions, a pseudo long weekend and Melbourne being released from lockdown meant that there were people everywhere over the weekend. All of the rivers, creeks and campsites were being used in one way or another. Being that I am fortunate enough to live in this beautiful part of the world and can fish here whenever I like, I avoided the region’s public waterways over the weekend. Instead I went yabbying in a small farm dam where I found that the yabbies were very active. I have been catching a lot of yabbies in the last fortnight in a number of different places. Now is a great time to get the nets out and take the kids yabbying. Whether it is using the meat and string technique, a drop net, open top lift nets etc... it doesn’t matter. The kids will have a blast. On the fishing front Lake Hume
continues to dominate with large yellowbelly, large trout and large numbers of average sized redfin continuing to be caught. I would imagine the trout fishing will start to slow down soon as the surface water temperature starts to warm up, but I expect the redfin and yellowbelly fishing to continue to be fantastic for a long time yet. Lake Dartmouth fished very well over the long weekend with many people catching a few trout. The giant lake has been producing good numbers of trout, but the size is not even close to the monsters that have been getting caught in Lake Hume. The rivers are all worth fishing at the moment as most fish species are becoming more and more active. Just angling with bait such as worms should see you hook onto a fish of some kind. Remember that Murray cod season remains closed until December 1 so any cod caught accidently must be released straight away.

Little known to many of his colleagues, a near fatal incident when he was a teenager changed his outlook on fire forever and would be at the forefront of his mind everyday on the job. “It was February 1, 1968 and I will never forget that day for as long as I live because I am very lucky to be alive,” Terry recounted. “A bushfire started between Mudgegonga and Myrtleford, I was just 16 or so. “Four of us were helping my neighbour round up cattle and this big CFA tanker drove in from Wangaratta looking for volunteers to jump on the back; three of us jumped on.
“In those days of course, there was no fire walls on the side of the truck and of course I wasn’t dressed for firefighting either I was just in a sleeveless shirt and shorts. “At about 3.30pm the air was black and the smoke was thick and we got a call to go up the Kiewa Valley Highway towards Mt Beauty. “There was a road which turned off from Dederang over the Kiewa River up to a river and a house. “When the driver turned up the track the fire was way back in the bush, but by the time we got closer to the house it was on us; it went under and over the truck. “The fob nozzle for the water in the back of the truck stalled and we just
got burnt; I got badly burnt and spent three weeks in Wodonga Hospital. “To this very day I have scars on my arm and it changed my opinion of fire forever, it’s dangerous no matter what, no matter where.” Terry was thankfully never injured again in his 48 years of service despite continuing to see heartache and frustration with fire. He is fiercely proud of his lifelong work to keep the Victorian people safe and thanks the incredible crews he has worked with. Not one to sit still, Terry will work his 200 acre beef cattle farm in retirement and hopes to continue to call into the Ovens Depot for a cup of tea and a catch up.
