Paula and our local CWA branches are going strong By ANITA McPHERSON
A LOCAL network of Country Women’s Association branches and its new group president are continuing its hands-on service to the community. For nearly 100 years the CWA has been working to advance the rights of women, families and communities in Australia, especially for those living in regional, rural and remote Australia. In this region there are nine active branches and Oxley resident Paula McGavin has just been installed as the group president of the North Eastern Group CWA of Victoria. While Paula was active in her local community she only recently joined the CWA, helping to establish the Oxley and Milawa branch in 2019, guided by then group president, Wilma Bright. Ten women initially signed up to be part of the Oxley and Milawa branch with Paula taking on the role of the inaugural branch secretary. “The branch has been motoring along ever since, last year launching a huge campaign making masks for COVID and raising mega dollars - it was just unbelievable,” she said.

Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome SHORT nosed dogs such as Pugs and Bull Dogs are breeds that we call brachycephalic. These dogs have been bred over many years to have a flattened face. Unfortunately for the dog, this conformation leads to numerous health concerns. One major issue with this conformation is the crowding of the airways, which can lead to difficulty breathing and a high risk of overheating, because a dog’s main way of heat reduction is through panting. The crowding of the airways can include narrow nostrils, an elongated soft palate, a tongue that is too big for the mouth and a small trachea. It can be described as trying to breathe through a straw. Over time, with the constant pressure exerted on the upper airway due to a narrow space, thickening of the soft palate can occur and structures called laryngeal saccules can become enlarged and can evert which narrows the airways even more. If you have a brachycephalic breed, your vet can do some procedures to help them open their airways more so they can breathe better. These procedures are best done when they are young, before secondary changes occur. These procedures can involve a nares
with Dr Meagan Lee, Ovens & Kiewa Veterinary Hospital resection, soft palate resection and removal of laryngeal saccules. The nares resection involves removing a wedge of tissue from each nostril, which helps to open the nostrils up so more air can get in. The soft palate is at the back of the hard palate or roof of the mouth and helps to protect the airways from aspiration. If this is too long, then it gets in the way and can get sucked into the airway with each breath. Your vet can remove the end of this structure to help clear the airways. The laryngeal saccules are often due to chronic airway obstruction and can be removed if they are causing issues. The only way to check the soft palate and laryngeal saccules is under a general anaesthetic. Please look at the Love is Blind campaign being run by the RSPCA for more information and contact your local vet if you have a young brachycephalic breed dog that is snorting, snuffling and having trouble exercising, they may be able to help and give your pet a better quality of life.

◆ CREATING A SAFE HABITAT: Hakea nodosa provides a safe place for birds to roost, feed and nest. PHOTO: Helen Van Riet
The yellow hakea - Hakea nodosa A GARDEN with nectar-producing flowers is an open invitation to dinner for insects and birds. Birds are delightful entertainment - playful antics, birdsong, nesting and sheer beauty of flight, even their squabbling - all add to the enjoyment of a garden. To attract birds, the provision of food should be supplemented by choosing to plant and maintain safe places for roosting, feeding, and nesting. Holistic garden design can incorporate ‘pricklies’ without risking injury for unwary passers-by. The Hakea genus contains a wide variety of beautiful species, many of which are suitable for gardens, and some of which have both spectacular flowers and prickly foliage. They grow in all manner of habitats, from harsh inland areas to tropical swamps and winter snow. The genus was named after Baron von Hake, a patron of Botany. They are members of the Proteaceae family.
Many hakeas flower for an extended period over winter, providing nectar-feeding birds with food for survival and for building up reserves to prepare for the forthcoming breeding season. Some have names such as needlewood, needlebush, pinbush, standback, spiked hakea, harsh hakea, hedgehog hakea. Don’t be deterred! Hakea nodosa (yellow hakea) bears bright yellow flowers closely clasped to rigid stems. It is a fast-growing, medium shrub with dense prickly foliage. It grows well in a range of soil types, including sandy or clay loam, and soils subject to waterlogging. It occurs naturally in south-eastern South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania, usually in winter-wet, swampy locations. Typical of many Australian plant species, most mature seed is retained on the plant for many years in large, knobby hard seed capsules. The epithet ‘nodosa’ is from the
Latin word nodosus meaning knotty, referring to the prominent knobs on the seed capsules. There are two winged seeds per capsule, and these are usually released when the capsule is opened following fire or the death of the plant. Heating the seed capsules in a slow oven (125 degrees Celsius) for about 1 ½ hours will release the seeds. H. nodosa is hardy in most conditions and does not require supplementary fertilizer. It will reach a height of two to three metres and can be pruned to shape and to enhance bushiness. This is an ideal plant for the novice gardener. Seed germinates readily. It thrives in full sun or part shade. Choose a location away from walking paths, where the bright yellow flowers will light up even the dullest winter day, birds will find dinner and maybe also choose to build a nest.

WINE TALK

YOUR HEALTH
Lana Wines 2020 Pinot Grigio JUST recently I’ve been disturbed by a phenomenon where older family and friends who are going about their business are being spoken to like they are children. In retail, hospitality and even in healthcare environments, apparently well-meaning people talk down to them and pat their hands, like their grey hair and slow gait make them five years old again. Why is it that people assume if someone’s movement or hearing is impaired, their brain function must be too, or that they might find sing-song voices and baby-talk flattering? Those kinds of ageist generalisations are worrying in a world where we’ll all be living and working longer and where aged care services should be diverse and tailored to suit an individual’s needs. No matter how old I get, I’m not about to let cakes, cordial, singa-longs and a single bed replace good food, fine wine and listening to my music as loud as a like it. Even if the fridge has to come into the bedroom, there’ll be wine in it like Lana Pinot Grigio. This young, fruity wine from the King Valley is a great example of the variety with bright pear, apple and a lightly peach aroma; distinct pear fruit flavour, some crunchy

apple and a crisp citrus finish. The flavours linger pleasantly and the fresh finish is clean and mineral, making it great with spicy food or while tucking into the rich creamy flesh of roast chicken or lobster thermidor. Enjoy a couple of glasses with dinner before retiring (to a king size bed). PRICE: About $22 a bottle.
This Day in History, 1895 ELDORADO came to a halt on this day, a Sunday, as townspeople paid their last respects to the men killed in the underground cave-in at the McEvoy mine. One thousand people turned out to line the route or to be part of the funeral procession to the Eldorado cemetery. The cortege was preceded by 150 miners from the McEvoy and other mines in the valley, and was followed by the carriages of the bereaved and 150 horsemen. At the graveside, the rituals of the Wesleyan Church, the Church of England, and the Masonic Order were observed; the Wesleyan Choir sang several hymns as the four miners were buried side by side. John Edgar Crane’s body had been returned to Newport for burial.
The great divide TODAY I would like to talk about the massive divide that is showing in our community. The aggressive, abusive and disrespectful language that is used in person or on social media about everything COVID. As a community we have always shown how supportive we can be of one another and our differences through the many tragedies or environmental disasters we have had. Through environmental disasters and the passing of loved ones, there is more often than not a great support network around us. And this makes me proud. But some people are doing it tough through the COVID disaster. They are losing income, they have no savings, their mental health is at rock bottom, they are physically suffering because they can’t access regular medical care due to lockdowns and restrictions and they are emotionally drained and are flat lining. These people are feeling desperate and alone.
Our local businesses need your help. Make sure you remember to shop locally whilst respecting social distancing guidelines. Your local communities and businesses NEED YOU NOW.
For some people this can lead to them acting out in a way that may not sit comfortably with you. And you are entitled to your opinion. But what is not helpful is kicking them when they are down and out, name calling and jumping to conclusions about someone’s belief system because of their occupation or where they live, this is called bullying regardless of what side of the fence you sit on. Next time you see someone acting or speaking in a way that may not gel with your thoughts on the topic, stop and think. Could this person have some points you may like to consider? Maybe even just one point that is food for thought? Is there more than one view point on the topic? Do you even have to argue the point? Where has your view point come from, have you been easily swayed by family or media? Do you actually have a firm belief
here or are you just following the majority? Could there be more than one “right” answer. Because you see, there never is just one “right” answer. Medical intervention may be a large part of your health care, but that doesn’t mean you throw out the foundations of health. Diet, lifestyle, nutritional deficiencies, quality sleep and stress management are pivotal in the management or improvement of any disease or health situation. And this is where we as naturopaths excel. COVID and its choices of prevention will pass at some point hopefully in the near future, but what will last is the memory of how we treated each other when we needed support the most. After all, this is when you find out who your support network is. So, whose support will you be regardless of your thoughts/beliefs and opinions?

FEATURE STORY
◆ WELCOME BACK: Staff at all ski resorts have been busy clearing snow and preparing to welcome visitors back following the latest lockdown. Works include clearing fallen trees from roads like this one at Mt Buffalo. PHOTO: Parks Victoria
Some good snow is here ALL snow resorts are bound by current COVID-19 restrictions and requirements.. This includes all visitors having received a negative COVID test 72 hours prior to travelling. This excludes Mt Buffalo National Park, where COVID tests are not a requirement of entry. Falls Creek has received excellent snow falls in recent weeks and the average snow depth is 132cm, with 144cm at Village bowl and 117cm on North Side. For XC skiers, the trails have varying amounts of cover from good to excellent with 22 out of 32 trails open. Keep up to date with current lift and trail information and dining options and activities via the website or Falls Creek app. Snow chains must be carried and fitted when directed. Mt Hotham has also received excellent snow falls in the past two weeks with a depth of 135cm of natural snow with nine lifts turning each day, wind dependant - check the Hotham App to see if the wind is playing havoc with any of the upper lifts. There are 16 trails open for XC skiers, 12 of which have been groomed and the best XC skiing can be found at Charlie’s Trail and Rowed’s Run. One terrain park has also opened.
Mt Buffalo has finally got some good snow cover at a depth of 35cm. Dingo Dell and Cresta Valley have been opened up for tobogganing and all three XC trails are open, with regular grooming taking place. Face masks must be carried at all times and must be worn indoors and outdoors, QR check-ins are used at facilities and density limits must be adhered too. Also be advised that visitor numbers at the park entrance may be limited due to COVID-19 restrictions and parking capacity on the plateau. Dingo Dell Café has been suffering some technical difficulties, regularly affecting their EFTPOS transactions, so please bring cash to guarantee any quality food and beverage items from the café. Mt Buller has 14 lifts in operation across the mountain. Kofler’s and Skyline parks are both open for skiing and snowboarding. Horse Hill and Village toboggan and snowplay parks are also open, however their snow is poor to fair respectively. For XC skiers all trails are open with very good to excellent snow cover. Overnight and 2WD need to carry wheel chains and fit them where directed.

CWA branches are going strong Ŷ
From page 1
“It gave us a great kick-start to get money in that we can then get out to the community, which has been fantastic and is what it is all about.” In April this year Paula decided to transfer to the Wangaratta branch and was voted in as the new group president, North Eastern Group, something she said she was happy to take on. It makes use of her considerable experience in administration, having spent many years as an executive assistant in tertiary education, law and funds management, before retirement. “People are happy to be in a group but very few want to put their hand up for leadership roles,” Paula said. “Taking on this sort of role requires a fair bit of administration and it doesn’t faze me at all because that was my training.” Paula said local branches are based in Barnawartha, Beechworth, Bright, Moyhu Evening, King Valley Evening, Oxley and Milawa, Rosewhite & District, Wangaratta District Evening and Whorouly, and each branch averages 10 to 18 members. She is currently in the process of
visiting them all - COVID regulations permitting - wanting to find out more about their different activities and interests. Paula said while at the moment it’s a challenge to even hold meetings, all branches are involved in a wide variety of fundraising activities and initiatives which give back to their communities. Some are involved in cooking or craft and many offering catering services, making the most of their reputation for being good cooks. A recent scone cook-off resulted in the Wangaratta community ordering both as individuals and from a number of local businesses who bought them for their staff - an incredibly successful group fundraiser. Paula said CWA members’ ages range from their mid-20s to mid-90s and all play a welcome and valuable role in their individual branches and at group level. Members choose the efforts they want to support, such as helping fire-affected communities, collecting essential goods for those in need and providing financial assistance to struggling families. branch are helping their community by volunteering their time to tutor local school children in need of some extra support. “Our members are lively, they contribute, they’ve got ideas - they are amazing,” said Paula. “We’re always on the lookout for people in our communities that need some sort of assistance and we also have the facilities at state level to take care of families who are in a dire situation.” On a personal level, Paula says it’s fun meeting different people and spending time with those who share an interest in helping others. Paula will serve as president for a maximum of two years and her aim during this time is to encourage all the branches to work as a team and support each other. She is also hoping to help boost membership and encourage younger people to get involved. Anyone wanting to find out more about their local CWA or how to join a branch is welcome to contact Paula via email on cwanegroup@gmail.com or call 0417 367 359.
