By BELINDA HARRISON THE Beechworth Bakery Bears are having lots of fun. They are riding on bobsleds and slurping coffee. They are keeping watch over the bakery and making sure that everyone has cake to eat. They are ready to tell you all their stories. The lives of the cuddly teddy bears who call Beechworth Bakery home are the inspiration for Beechworth author Frank Prem’s latest book series - The Beechworth Bakery Bears. “I don’t see myself as a children’s writer - I’m a poet first and foremost, and all my work is aimed at readers
who comprehend adult words and situations,” Frank said. “Creating a picture book is very different because of the photos themselves and I really wanted to give the photos their own space around the speech from the bears. “Plus, I had to learn the kind of communication the reader of these books would have with a teddy bear. “Each of the bears had their own voice that I could hear when they spoke to me and shared their story of sitting on that particular shelf or above that particular warming oven and it became easier to put it in child-like conversations.”

Chrismont Wines 2020 Pinot Grigio
PEOPLE often say stir fries are quick and easy dishes to prepare at home and while I’m a big fan when it comes to eating them I’m not so keen on preparing them. Firstly there is the slicing which requires effort and precision, let alone spectacularly fresh ingredients - certainly not the limp excuse for vegetables which can often be found in my fridge. Stir fries are great for people who live next door to a fresh produce market, have some basic knife skills and are not afraid of having flames lick their kitchen ceiling. Because the best stir fries are the kind you get in a street market where both the wok and the cook are well seasoned and the gas burner has the power of a jet engine. It’s all about extreme heat, dexterity and impeccable timing, without which you can end up with a dodgy looking stew. I’m happy to watch the experts do it in half a minute and then serve me something like Teriyaki Chicken which I’ll have with a glass of Chrismont Pinot Grigio. It has a very pale, straw colour and the vibrant, almost juicy aroma of fresh pears.

This wine is fresh but also flavoursome with pie apple and Packham pear, ending with a crisp, citrus acidity. That fruitiness and cleansing dry finish make it an ideal accompaniment with chicken and seafood, particularly when it’s laced with garlic or rich sauces. I’m just glad it’s not me that has to clean the wok. PRICE: About $22 a bottle.
This Day in History, 1851 ONE of the earliest explorations of the Murray River by water, was when F. Gerstacker sailed from Albury in his gum tree canoe, heading for the sea. The intrepid mariner managed to cover about 30 miles before he sank, somewhat short of his goal. It was three years before the first riverboats would penetrate up the Murray from South Australia.

When do I need to wear hearing protection? IF you engage in excessively noisy activities, it is important that you and those about you wear hearing protection during that activity. If noise is part of your workplace, your employer should provide you with hearing protection as well as routine hearing screening (usually every two years). If noise exposure is not related to your job, there may still be noisy activities at home or during some leisure activities where hearing protection is appropriate. Many people who need hearing protection at work realise that their ears need the same protection when they are not at work (your ears do not know whether you are being paid or not). It is always great to see neighbours wearing hearing protection when they use noisy gardening equipment
at a manageable height for next season’s fruit picking or for netting. Check ripe and ripening fruit for signs of fruit fly infestation – soft patches, brown to black sting marks, maggots. Check traps are within the use-by date and replace or recharge with new baits if required. Place traps around the house, especially in evergreen foliage near the house e.g. the lemon tree. Netting around most trees can be removed now but should remain if you have ripe or ripening fruit still in your yard. If you have fruit trees that you don’t use, consider removing them completely through the free Fruit Tree Removal Program and replacing with a non-fruiting plant.

or when working in the shed. As this type of hearing loss is both cumulative and permanent, it is important to start young by providing children with hearing protection when they are nearby to noise sources. For example, if they accompany you when you collect wood using a chainsaw, they should also have earmuffs of their own - even though they will not be too close to the action. Establishing the routine is very important. Please remember that when you use hearing protection as needed at home, you are providing a valuable role model for your own children or grandchildren, as well as the young kids who may live near you. If they see ‘Joe Blow’ from down the road wearing earmuffs when mowing the lawn, they will learn that
they should do the same when they are old enough to use the mower. Further, it is never too late to start using protection, even if you already have a hearing loss. Surprisingly, there are still many who do not recognise that they do irreversible damage to delicate hair cells in the inner ears every time they use a firearm (even the smaller ones) without hearing protection. Staff members of Wangaratta Audiology are able to provide guidance about the use of hearing protection, both for adults and children. Our audiologists are frequently involved with hearing screening, both as a pre-employment requirement or as a part of an employer’s routine industrial screening. You can contact us on 03 5722 4433 or drop by the clinic at 82 Docker Street, Wangaratta.

Secret bear business Ŷ
From page 1
Combining his particular brand of poetry and storytelling, Frank said the bears started speaking to him as he enjoyed his early morning coffee before heading off to his ‘day job’ of psychiatric nurse. “I have recently commenced semi-retirement, but it had been my habit to get up very early and go to the bakery, make a little quiet space in my head before my shift and even do a little writing,” he said. “The bears are a marketing item and at times sit together en-masse, with the staff arranging them and changing the displays almost daily depending on the number of bears they have or what they want to highlight that day.
“I started really noticing the bears and took pictures of them which led to me having little conversations with them, their personalities shone through and they started telling me about themselves and the high regard they have for Tom (O’Toole, founder of the Beechworth Bakery). “I incorporated it into a series and my wife Leanne organised the layout for a picture book. “I was lucky last year during COVID that my work was guaranteed and my workplace wasn’t really affected, apart from being like everyone else - scared and uncertain about what it all meant, and missing seeing people socially. “It stopped a lot of the momentum and work I had put into
meeting the local people my books were reaching but there was a bright side - I got to spend time looking at the 40 years’ worth of writing archive I’d built up and turn it into book form. “I have enough for a 20 or 30 poetry book collection which includes everything from fires, to COVID as I experienced it, to say Volume 15 which focuses on works from 1990. “I think there will be a lot of stories shared that come out of the COVID pandemic. “Personally I have managed okay, but more social people seem to have suffered and don’t feel like their normal selves so I think the last year will have a profound difference for a lot of people. “At home I can work at my
desk, providing the material is mine to work with and get lost in that. “I get lost in creativity land.” In addition to the Beechworth Bakery Bears picture books and going through his archives, Frank has created another poetry picture book entitled Voices in the Trash, which grew out of his visit to the Daylesford Mill Market. “There’s a huge antique barn full of trash and treasure from mannequins to dwarves to colourful door handles. “I fell in love with them all and wanted to capture them in a unique way, and that’s when Voices in the Trash came about.” Frank said that he hasn’t put an age limit on Voices in the Trash or the Beechworth Bak-

ery Bears book as they can be enjoyed by people of all ages. “They are stories about soft, cuddly teddy bears and unique trash and treasure items,” he said. “I just want people to read and enjoy them,” he said. For those interested in familiarising themselves with Frank’s

GONE FISHING
nemedia.com.au
BOOK NOOK
◆ NICE COD: Tim Galley with a nice Murray cod caught on a Codger TopWater surface lure in the Bundalong area last week where the Ovens River is backed up by the water of Lake Mulwala.
Cod being caught but trout a bit hit and miss THE unseasonably warm weather of late has worked to the advantage of anglers with quite a few fish being caught across the region. Last week Tim Galley and I went lure fishing for Murray cod around the Bundalong area. We both managed to catch one Murray cod each. Both cod were caught on surface lures - mine a Havok Custom surface lure and Tim’s a Codger TopWater lure. I have had a few other reports of good Murray cod fishing in the Bundalong area lately too, including my Dad and my uncle who trolled two Murray cod there during the week, the biggest one being 61cm long. I have been doing a bit of trout fishing in the small tributaries of the Ovens and King rivers this week where I have found the trout fishing to be a little bit hit and miss. Excellent fishing one day, poor fishing the next. I have caught trout on both lures and flies. The best lure has been the Strike Tiger Nymph soft plastic in coffee colour, and the best fly
with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA
with Mark Rosenow has been a Royal Stimulator dry fly. I have been tying my Royal Stimulator about 40cm up the line and hanging a bead headed nymph underneath it. The dry fly floats and the nymph suspends in the water column underneath. Sometimes I catch them all on the nymph, and sometimes I catch them all on the dry fly (Royal Stimulator). I have had two reports from Lake Nillahcootie this week. One report was that it was as dead as a doornail with not a single bite and the other report was of one carp and one small Murray cod being caught off the bank, but other than that it was very quiet. The fishing is very slow over there at the moment.
EDGARS BOOKS AND NEWS ◆ THRILLING READ: Blackout by Simon Scarrow, ISBN 9781472258557, available now at Edgars Books and News Wangaratta.
Blackout: WW2 crime thriller BERLIN, winter 1939. Criminal Inspector Horst Schenke is torn between his position as head of Kripo Section (murder investigation) and his desire to avoid becoming a member of Adolf Hitlers’ Nazi Party. Snow is heavily blanketing the city, and then a young woman is found by the railway lines, brutally attacked and murdered. An ex-actress last seen walking into the snow with a married Nazi officer, an open and shut case - then the twists begin. The Gestapo order Horst Schenke to take on the investigations with an immediate result expected.
The pressure to solve the case is immense, or is it really about removing the Horst Schenke from his command? The investigation is complicated by the discovery of a second victim and the possibility of previous killings being connected. Serial killer or authorities using the cover of war and winter to remove potential threats? Who to trust? His girlfriend, whose uncle is Admiral Canaris of the Military Intelligence Service? His superiors who treat him with suspicion for his suspect loyalties or his own staff who know if Horst fails
Local people, local places ...immerse yourself in the region
they will suffer with him? The warring factions can be as lethal as the murderer Horst is tasked with finding. A taut, twisting novel that captures the time and tension brilliantly, author Simon Scarrow has tackled a new genre brilliantly and Horst Schenke is a man for the times. Scarrow is an English author of the best selling Eagle Of the Empire series, The Gladiator series and many others. Blackout is the first Horst Schenke book and hopefully the first of many. For lovers of Henning Mankell or Peter James.
