WHILE Wangaratta local Chris Tzaros couldn’t visit most of his beloved Box-Ironbark forests last year due to travel restrictions, he took the opportunity to revise and update his 2005 handbook Wildlife of the Box-Ironbark Country - which was released on October 1. “The first edition was very popular and has long been out of print, so it was good to have the opportunity to work on a revised volume last year,” Chris said. Growing up near Bendigo but now calling the North East home, Chris is an award-winning independent wildlife ecologist and photographer and has 25 years experience working on wildlife research and conservation projects. He is passionate about temperate woodlands, including Box-Ironbark. “I am keen to share my knowledge and photography with as broad an audience as possible, and present this with other research findings and conservation information from the region,” Chris said. “I believe it’s important for local people to be aware of their local natural environment, so I hope this book will contribute to improving people’s knowledge and understanding of Box-Ironbark wildlife, which is an important way forward for promoting sustainable management and conservation in the region.” Wildlife of the Box-Ironbark Country - Second Edition - gives a comprehensive overview of the ecology of the Box-Ironbark habitats and their wildlife, and how climate change is having a major influence. “The first edition was written around the beginning of the devastating Millennium Drought,” Chris explained. “The impacts of this drought on the dry woodlands of central and northern Victoria, and indeed elsewhere, have been significant, and I was keen to highlight this ecosystem change in the new edition.

Hypothyroidism WHAT is hypothyroidism? Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) results from decreased thyroid hormone production by the thyroid glands, which are located in the neck near the voice box. It is seen most commonly in middleaged to older dogs. Affected dogs become easily fatigued, sleep for longer periods of time, are often dull in their attitude and may seek a warm area in cold weather. Slim breeds of dogs may seem puffy or over-weight, as the skin becomes thickened in hypothyroidism. The hair coat becomes dry and loses sheen, the colour dulls and the hair may become very sparse, especially in areas of friction, with darkening of the skin. Clipped hair may not regrow. Affected dogs may become prone to skin infections and poor wound healing, as well as many internal health problems.
with Wangaratta Veterinary Clinic Diagnosis Diagnosis of hypothyroidism depends on taking blood samples to measure hormone levels. In some cases, diagnosis can be difficult and repeated testing is necessary. Treatment Treatment is by administration of oral thyroid hormone supplementation. There is generally a rapid improvement in your pet’s activity once treatment is started. However, determining the right dosage of the thyroid supplement can take time. Additionally, regrowth of the hair and lightening of the skin may take several months. Hypothyroidism treatment is lifelong because there is no true cure.

Grow a home medicinal herb garden THERE are many herbs you can easily grow at home in pots, tubs or garden beds. They are each hardy, pretty and
easy to harvest and make into medicines. The main ways these herbs can be easily incorporated into the
medicine cupboard is to pick them fresh and use as teas or dry them and then make into creams or topical oils.

De Bortoli Rutherglen Estate 2018 Shiraz Durif A FAVOURITE recipe for beef in red wine sauce has been on repeat at my house while the nights are still cool and a wood fire is still required. It’s a pretty easy one that relies on a balance of red wine, brandy and a small piece of orange peel to impart just the right kind of boozy, rich flavour without one element overpowering the other. I’ve made the mistake before of being too heavy handed with the brandy and orange and finding my casserole gravy tastes more like Crepes Suzette than a hearty bovine brew. But just the right amount of each adds interesting elements that make the dish taste far more refined and complex than it actually is. That’s the beauty of the blend - bringing together the best characteristics of each ingredient without overpowering the other - something that’s harder than it seems. I like Rutherglen Estates Red, a blend of 86 per cent Shiraz with 14 per cent Durif, because the peppery spice of the Shiraz is so nicely complemented by the deep, almost liqueur chocolate character of the Durif. The fruit for both ripened evenly and well during what was a good year, albeit in different

blocks in the Rutherglen vineyard. It has a deep, purple red colour, a spicy berry aroma and flavour that’s rich, juicy and mouth-filling, kind of coating your palate and lingering there. The generosity of fruits - berries and savoury plum - make it moreish and satisfying while the spice adds a savoury twist. Affordable, fruity appeal to go with my beefy meal. COST: About $16 a bottle.
This Day in History, 1953 A NOSTALGIC day for railway buffs - the closure of the Whitfield line. For 50 years, the service had provided a continuous link between the farmers of the King Valley and Wangaratta. By the time it was decided to close down the line, the service had been reduced to one goods train per week which could not go beyond Moyhu because of bushfire damage to bridges, and a service to Whitfield provided by a light motorised trolly-bus. On this day in 1953, the trolly-bus made its last run, with veteran driver George Stamp at the controls.
Bowen therapy, more than just pain relief I CAME upon Bowen therapy by accident, while I was studying my Natural Fertility Diploma with a group of other practitioners. One evening many of us had a Bowen treatment by one of the other participants and I was amazed at how good I felt in the morning. I knew I had to study this technique. I took the training, not having any idea what it was about and I now think it was one of the best investments I have ever made. I got very excited when, during the training, I helped my Mum’s back pain by simply doing a few moves. Within a week of finishing the training, I helped a woman’s jaw pain while she was waiting for surgery. Although Bowen therapy is primarily a pain relief technique, it does so much more. What is Bowen therapy? It is a dynamic system of muscle and connective tissue therapy and it is now taught all over the world.
The ultimate guide for tourists and locals
In the years following the Second World War, Tom Bowen developed the technique right here in Geelong, Australia. The Bowen practitioner does a series of gentle muscle and connective tissue moves, a few at a time, with short waits between sets of moves. These moves stimulate the body to rebalance (heal) itself. The relief can come quickly or improvement may also continue over the next several days. For the classic Bowen move, the practitioner’s finger and thumb tips find the muscle, pull only the skin to the side of the muscle and then with gentle pressure, push the muscle out of its resting position. This push is continued until the muscle pops, under the finger and thumb of the practitioner, into its original position. It is very gentle. There are several current research projects underway to try to find out
the mechanism by which Bowen works. A conventional point of view says that there is a muscle/tendon structure called the Gogli tendon apparatus, operated by your autonomic nervous system, that is stimulated by these Bowen moves to relax the muscle. There are no age restrictions for Bowen therapy - it can be done on newborns and infants and also on the very elderly. My oldest client is 98 years old and finds great relief from fluid retention and circulation in his legs. My youngest client was a couple of days old and found relief from colic symptoms. Bowen therapy is unique, gentle, and effective. It relieves pain and a host of other health problems. New book celebrates local wildlife Ŷ
From page 1
“Though the region still supports such a diverse range of animals, the drought caused permanent changes to wildlife populations and their habitats across the landscape. “Worryingly, events such as droughts and bushfires, coupled with reduced rainfall and higher temperatures, are expected to occur in the future under climate change. “People need to be aware of this and we need to recognise there are things we all need to do to reduce the impact of climate change on the natural environment.” The extensively revised second edition covers some 267 species of mammals, birds, reptiles and frogs of the central and northern Victorian box-ironbark forests and woodlands, which extends from Stawell, through Bendigo, to Chiltern and north into New South Wales. “These open forests and woodlands are comprised of character-
istic eucalypts such as ironbark, stringybark, gum and box trees and they support a distinctive wildlife community including many species rarely found outside this vegetation type,” Chris said. “There are also a range of highly threatened and declining species that depend on Box-Ironbark habitat, such as the critically endangered Swift Parrot and Regent Honeyeater and the rare Brush-tailed Phascogale, Squirrel Glider, Pink-tailed WormLizard, Woodland Blind Snake, Tree Goanna and Bibron’s Toadlet. “They are of immense conservation value and are a unique part of the Australian environment.” Aside from his extensive knowledge of native wildlife, Chris is also an avid and talented wildlife photographer and the revised edition of his book features hundreds of photos he has painstakingly captured over the past couple of decades.
The book includes a brief description of each species and their distribution, status and ecology, together with a detailed distribution map and photo to assist with species identification. A feature of the book is a ‘Where to watch’ section, which presents a selection of national and state parks and nature conservation reserves where people can experience the ecosystem and its wildlife for themselves. Whether you are a land manager, conservation and wildlife worker, fauna consultant, landholder, teacher, student, naturalist and someone just interested in learning about and appreciating the wildlife of this fascinating and endangered ecosystem, this book is for you. Wildlife of the Box-Ironbark Country - Second Edition is available now through local bookshops, or online from CSIRO Publishing at publish. csiro.au/book/7945.

GONE FISHING
MONEY MATTERS
Wet spring makes for better fishing with Win Securities Limited ◆ WHAT TO ORGANISE FIRST: Speak to your mortgage broker about securing a pre-approval loan with a lender before you try to find your perfect home.
with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA RAIN, rain, rain...it keeps making the rivers high and the water dirty. Although it might be annoying, wet years like this year tend to lead to great fishing in the long run. Spring floods provide valuable food for Murray cod fry, which leads to better natural recruitment of the species in rivers, and from my personal experience we usually see excellent trout and redfin fishing in the warmer weather that follows a wet spring. Over the last week I have been trout fishing a couple of times with quite good success drifting worms through the deeper pools in the high murky water. At the moment every river and creek in the region that holds trout is worth fishing. The water is still very cold, there’s a lot of it, and there’s a lot of food in the system, mostly in the form of worms. I went bait fishing with my wife Lauretta at Lake Eildon early in the week where I caught a nice 39cm yellowbelly angling off the bank after wading through seven European carp. All of the carp, and the yellow-

belly were caught using worms for bait on a running sinker rig. I wonder how many I would have caught if I hadn’t of ran out of worms? For those with a boat, Lake Hume is the place to be. I know I mention it just about every week, but at the moment trout to 70cm and beyond are being caught every week. There are also yellowbelly to 70cm and redfin to 45cm being caught. The lake is going nuts! Not everyone is catching fish that large, but many are and you’ve got to be in it to win it. If you follow the Facebook group “Fishing On The Border” by my friend Cliff Karnatz, you will see photos of these amazing trophy sized fish turning up regularly.
What comes first - the property or the loan? IT’S easy to get carried away with the fun part of buying a property - looking at houses - but delaying the less compelling task of arranging finance will weaken your negotiating position on both the property and the loan. Looking for a property to purchase is an exciting time. Choices regarding location, size, number of rooms and local amenities often see house hunters carried away in a deluge of daydreams and anticipation. However, before you get carried away, it’s important to check off the essentials first. Although organising your finances may seem drab in comparison to perusing sales listings, gaining pre-approval with a lender will give you confidence about how much you can afford to borrow. A Mortgage and Finance Association of Australia (MFAA) mortgage broker explains: “First and foremost you need to determine if you’re eligible to borrow money from a lender. “Your ability to repay the loan will need to be assessed - you don’t want to find out after you’ve made an offer

that your credit history or deposit is not up to scratch.” Arranging finance before finding the perfect property will put you in a good position when it comes time to make an offer. When you do find the house you have always wanted, you can present to the seller and estate agent as a prepared applicant who is serious and reliable. “It shows you mean business, and gives them peace of mind that your financing will not fall through. “Don’t be afraid to let the selling agent know you have conditional loan approval in place.” Sellers are most interested in completing their sale fuss-free and with steadfast funding, and showing that you are capable of both, will help put you at the top of a potentially competitive list of applicants. In the instance that you find and secure purchase of a home without having your loan pre-approved by a lender, there are a few pitfalls that you risk running into. “If you don’t have financing to pay for your property, you run the risk of
forfeiting your initial 10 per cent nonrefundable deposit you need to put down to secure the property,” the mortgage broker said. “This may differ depending on what state you live in, but the point is it always pays to be organised and have pre-approval in place.” Saving home loan applications to the last minute also leaves less time to find the most suitable loan and have it approved ahead of settlement. “Arranging financing as an afterthought also adds immense pressure to the process of shopping around for the right loan and gathering the paperwork to prove you can service the loan,” the finance broker explained, “You don’t want to rush this process.” The first step towards finding your new home is speaking to an MFAA accredited finance broker to sort out the finances. The team at Win Securities Limited (ACL No 240901) are at 37 Reid Street Wangaratta, can help get you off on the right foot. Call (03) 5721 5200 or email info@ winsec.com.au.
