AT Yarrunga Primary School, bikes are known as ‘freedom machines’. The focus on the two-wheeled transport has extended to the school using bikes rather than buses to travel to excursions - and even the creation of a jumps track for student use. Principal Fran Waterman said the developing bike culture was exciting, and students were strongly invested in it. Youngsters have been encouraged to tackle bike-related projects such as bike art and t-shirt design, and jumped at the chance to develop the track on the school’s White Street campus. Grade five/six teacher Matt Lorback said the school arranged for delivery of a couple of trailerloads of dirt, and space was provided for students to work on building the jumps track, which is gradually taking shape. “This term they’ve been out there every day; we give them class time two or three times a week as well as recess and lunchtime to work on it,” he said. Mr Lorback said the track could “chop and change” according to the children’s decisions. “It’s involved teamwork, collaboration and all that kind of learning, as well as the physical skills required to build and test the jumps,” he said. “They built something the other day and found there were spots that didn’t work when they rode them, so it has been a learning curve.

Gut stasis in rabbits RABBITS have an incredibly unique gastrointestinal system which is very sensitive to any disruptions to normal function and can have serious complications including death if not addressed in a timely matter. Problems with a rabbit’s diet as well as pain, stress, temperature changes, reduced exercise and poor food or water intake can all lead to a decrease in movement of the gastrointestinal system. Rabbits need to have constant access to food and water and their diet is particularly important. The majority of their diet (75 per cent) should be made up of roughage such as good quality hay and the rest of the diet can then be supplemented with fresh veggies, some fibrous fruits and only a small amount of commercial rabbit food mixes. Roughage such as hay is extremely important not only for their gut health and movement but also keeping their teeth healthy as the grinding of this food wears the teeth down adequately. If a rabbit’s gastrointestinal system stops moving as it should then it is called gut stasis and the lack of movement can lead to harmful bacteria proliferating and creating

gas in the stomach. Rabbits cannot vomit or burp to release gas and digested food, so this builds up in the gastrointestinal system and makes them very unwell. Signs of gut stasis include but are not limited to, reduced appetite, reduced amount or size of faeces, loud gurgling gut sounds, lethargy and bloating. This is a treatable disease, but it needs to be addressed in the early stages of the disease before any further damage is done to the body. Prevention of this disease is by ensuring an adequate diet as discussed above especially with good quality roughage and vegetables with lots of fibre while avoiding fruits and vegetables with a high sugar content as well as ensuring rabbits always have access to food and water, reducing stress and preventing or treating pain. If you are concerned that your rabbit is showing any signs of gut stasis then get them checked by your regular vet.

Downy mildew of brassicas DOWNY mildew is caused by a fungus-like organism (Hyalperonospora parasitica) that mainly attacks foliage. It’s responsible for substantial losses in seedling production, especially in the cooler months and young plants are more susceptible than older plants. H. parasitica can infect cauliflower curds and produce systemic symptoms in heading brassicas and radish. H. parasitica infects a wide range of plants, including broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, chinese broccoli, chinese cabbage, chinese mustard, kale, kohlrabi, radish, turnip, shepherd’s purse, swede and watercress. A different race of P. parasitica causes downy mildew on stocks. H. parasitica on brassicas will not infect stocks and vice versa. The following symptoms can indicate downy mildew. On seedlings, a fluffy or powderywhite mass of spores on the undersurface of brassica seed leaves (cotyledons) followed by black speckling and puckering of the upper surface or leaves prematurely yellowing and falling from plants. Symptoms on mature plants are generally confined to the leaves closest to the ground.

Black speckling might be visible, which may later be surrounded by patches of yellow. If the infection becomes systemic, black to grey flecking or streaking may be present in the stems. On radish hypocotyls (edible fleshy root), black patches develop externally on the surface and a black discolouration or speckling is present internally. Cauliflower curds show blackening both externally and internally. The powdery white spores are the major means of dispersal of H. parasitica, especially once it is established within seedlings crops. Spores are produced overnight and released the following morning as the air dries out. They are dispersed by wind and rain splash. The disease is favoured by cool temperatures with an optimum range of eight degrees Celsius to 16 degrees Celsius. The vegetative spores need water to germinate and can infect seedlings within three hours of contact with a leaf. Deficiencies of potash have been shown to increase the susceptibility of cauliflower seedlings to downy mildew. Oospores (sexually produced or survival spores) of the H. parasitica are formed in ageing and dying leaves and can survive in debris in the soil from one crop to the next.

YOUR HEALTH Cofield Wines

Rutherglen Chardonnay 2018 AFTER a visit to a new local restaurant I’ve been inspired to take a closer look at what exciting things could be done with the vegetables I have grown. There were a multitude of courses but in nearly every one a modest vegetable like a carrot, baby beetroot, cucumber or eggplant wasn’t the afterthought but the stars of their own show, and they were absolutely delicious. Even the confirmed meateater at the table was tucking in like there was no tomorrow because the attention to detail and complexity of flavour was so enjoyable. It made me feel guilty that because of laziness, limited skills and a lack of imagination, home grown produce was only ever barbecued, pickled or fed to the chooks. And vegetable-based dishes like braised baby carrots and baba ganoush go so well with a classic wine like Cofield’s Chardonnay. A vegetable dish with a creamy, smoky or earthy taste is a good match for this wine, which has a light golden colour and a peachy, vanilla aroma. The flavour is fresh and at first it zings with melon and citrus, but then that stone fruit depth

and those warm vanilla notes begin to rise up and resonate again. It’s an example of how getting the balance just right can bring out the best in this variety. How long my new found inspiration will last is anyone’s guess, but even if it’s back to grilling eggplant on the barbecue, the Chardonnay will still make it taste better. Around $24.

This Day in History, 1931 BEECHWORTH boy scouts were aghast. Their great leader, Lord Baden Powell, had been in town, and hadn’t breathed a word about it. It was on this day in 1931 that Lord and Lady Baden Powell motored through Beechworth in a chauffeur driven motor car. They were returning to Melbourne from a visit to the Kiewa Valley, and even stopped at Beechworth for petrol. For once, the local boy scouts weren’t prepared and their great leader went unsaluted.

Communication aids AS we venture ‘out’ for a meal with friends and family, listening environments will be more challenging than we have experienced over the past many months. It takes practice to begin to hear comfortably in those noisy places with lots more people in the shops, cafes and even meetings. Some people will find that the addition of lip reading cues gives them the boost they need now that facemasks do not need to be worn in so many locations. Others may suddenly notice that they really need to get those hearing aids out of the drawer and get them back on their ears. Just remember, it takes practice to become re-acquainted with all those sounds around you. Be easy on yourself when you are just starting out again and wear the hearing aids in quiet places too.

Around home, if you find that the television is difficult to understand, firstly think about the sound quality coming from your TV - are its speakers at the back of the TV where the sound only comes to the listener by bouncing off the back wall or curtains? If so, consider how far the TV is from the wall, or if it is located in a corner or against a window with a curtain. Repositioning the TV or adding a sound bar or remote speakers to the TV may solve your problem. You might find that a listening device might give you a better sound for the TV; there are devices available to work either with or without hearing aids. For people who need hearing aids to hear conversation in the room as well as the TV, it is desirable to use a device which can stream sound from the TV directly to the hearing aids. That way you can be ready to have a conversation without the need to

remove headphones. When travelling in a car, if eyes are on the road, lip reading clues cannot be relied upon, making conversation more difficult. For hearing aid wearers, a remote microphone can be worn by the other person in the car. The message is streamed directly through the hearing aids, reducing the effect of road noise. This same microphone can also be used in a noisy café or restaurant if you are there with just one person - the effect is to improve how you get the message in that situation. There are many options to assist you to get the message better. Students jump at Yarrunga Primary School’s focus on bikes Ŷ

From page 1

“It’s great to see leadership coming out in kids in an authentic way, and to see them being active.” Ruby Barnard (10) is among the students who have been contributing to work on Yarrunga Primary’s jumps track, and said she loved getting out on her bike. “I like when you’re riding and the wind comes into your face - it feels so good,” she said. Luke Duncan (11) and Kobe Culph (12), along with fellow student Chase Kennedy, have been among those driving the track’s development. “I like making it and then testing it out,” Luke said. Kobe agreed: “Building and riding on it is great; we want to see a good track with different sections.”

Mr Lorback said Yarrunga Primary classes spoke about the opportunities offered by bikes, and excursions showed how Wangaratta’s bike tracks offered accessibility to many local features and facilities. “We’ve had Glenn Clarke from Road Safe North East come along to talk about bike safety, and Wes from West End Cycles has visited to speak about bike maintenance, so we’re looking at lots of different aspects,” he said. Mr Lorback said the school regularly utilised the nearby Mitchell Avenue pump track, with ‘Treadly Tuesday’ encouraging grade three to six children to visit the pump track weekly at lunchtime, and ‘Freedom Friday’ getting grade six students out on their bikes to visit places like Northern Beaches and

He praised Rural City of Wangaratta council for its efforts in developing the pump track, and providing space for jumps building in the West End, Arlington Park Estate and Sydney Beaches area. “A lot of other councils have shied away from that, so it’s great to see our council getting behind it,” he said. Mr Lorback said, along with the other benefits, the school’s burgeoning bike culture had been a great vehicle for building community following the COVID-19 lockdowns of 2020. “It’s been nice to see the more able kids helping the less able kids and encouraging them along,” he said.

GONE FISHING

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre ◆ NICE TROUT: Rohan Jenner from RKJfishing on YouTube with a nice small stream brown trout caught on a small bullet minnow lure.

Great weather, great fishing over Easter HOW good was the weather over Easter? So too was the fishing for many people. I have received a huge number of fishing reports over the Easter long weekend and the general feeling was that the Murray cod fishing was quite good for bait fishermen right across the region, but a bit patchy for lure fishermen. The stand out location for lure fishermen was Lake Mulwala where quite a few nice Murray cod were caught over Easter, including several that were over 120cm in length. Check out @lakemulwalafishcampski on Instagram to see all of the amazing photos. The Ovens River is still fishing well for bait anglers, but has slowed down quite a bit for lure fishermen with inconsistent reports of Murray cod and trout cod still being caught. Lake Hume is still producing excellent redfin fishing as it has done all summer. Some people are missing out and others are catching hundreds. The key is to move around and try to locate the schools of fish.

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA I fished Lake William Hovell from my kayak last Wednesday afternoon where I managed to catch a dozen redfin. All fish were trolled on a small 38mm diving lure called a Damiki Disco. I tried a number of different techniques but it was trolling that particular lure than worked best. I had to work for them, but as with Lake Hume, once I found a school I caught a heap of fish. The trout streams are firing at the moment with the cooling water and decent stream flows firing the trout up. I have fished a number of tributaries of the Ovens and King rivers over the last week and had quite a bit of success using a Super Vibrax bladed spinner and a variety of different small minnows.

NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ CRITICAL HIT: Roleplaying games like ‘D&D’ are more popular than ever, and the world of academia is taking notice.

Dungeons and Dragons is good for your brain GEEKY, nerdy, silly, even satanic over the years ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ (and role-playing games in general), have had all manner of negative labels associated with them. The meteoric rise in popularity of D&D over the last few years has largely dispelled these negative connotations, thanks in part to an excellent 5th edition of the game, as well as the growing popularity of fantasy and science fiction fiction over the last decade or so, but few have yet to appreciate - and capitalise - on the excellent cognitive exercise such games provide. For the uninitiated, role-playing games (of the non-computer variety), are a kind of board game without the board - a game in which you, and a group of your friends, collaboratively tell a story using your collective imagination and overcome rule-based obstacles and adversaries with successful rolls (versus a set target number) of many-sided dice. Typically, one member of the group is the ‘Dungeon Master’ (DM) - the primary storyteller, while the rest of the group act as the rag-tag, adventurous protagonists of the story, who must overcome the trials the DM throws at them. It sounds more complicated than it is, honestly. In the 1980’s, a few years after Dungeons and Dragons was first released and had gained a niche following of enthusiastic players, various lobby groups and sections of the media spun a moral panic about the game. They claimed that the role playing game encouraged children to join cults,

engage in occult practices and behaviour, and that people who played the game would lead unsuccessful lives. Of course, these were the claims of people who were ignorant of the game genre, and the years that followed roundly disproved them. Yet it is only in more recent times that academics and teachers have come to explore the benefits that role playing games bring to the cognitive sciences and the classroom respectively. It’s great brain food Psychological studies have observed that those who played D&D and other RPGs had higher cognitive abilities than the average population. These include comprehension, spelling, attention span and critical thinking. But how? Well, in the game you would have to listen to the DM explain the situation and the world around you. This requires the player to comprehend what is happening and to listen attentively. Also, the GM would often place players in tough situations which require players to problem-solve themselves out of sticky situations. Sure, trying to pass through a narrow hallway with spikes on the ground isn’t the same as trying to find the right code for new software, but it exercises critical thinking skills and makes you think outside the box. Other studies have also found that playing RPGs enhance the ability to experience other perspectives, escape social pressure, increase personal con-

trol and improve social skills. These skills are vital for employees to integrate into work culture, making players feel more comfortable asking coworkers out for lunch. A multidisciplinary dungeon crawl A group of Grade 9 students in Texas who substantially outperformed their district on a statewide standardised test all had one surprising thing in common - they all were members of the school’s Dungeons & Dragons club. This might seem like coincidence, but the interesting part of this story is that a substantial number of the students had a history of struggling academically. It’s not difficult to see how collaborative world-building involving storytelling, decision making, invention, research, calculations, negotiation, role-play, and active spatial visualization can stimulate a developing intellect. And, despite the burnish of fantasy, invented realms are derivative, and thus applicable, to the real world. Engaging students in a dramatic adventure of swords and sorcery as a strategy to teach them the applicability of mathematics, spatial awareness, problem solving, cooperation, socialemotional awareness, and even a smattering of physics and biology seems like a no-brainer to me. Thankfully, the kids who grew up playing ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ are the new crop of teachers, and many are enthusiastically engaging young students with this new mode of learning.
