Dancing on world stages By BELINDA HARRISON WHEN seven year old Ash-Leigh Cunningham attended her first dance lesson in the stadium at Wangaratta High School back in 2002, she couldn’t have imagined her new-found interest would take her around the world. “I started at Pulsate under (then owner and director) Tanya Singh when she opened up her dance school,” Ash-Leigh said. “Dance was literally my number one commitment during school and I can’t even begin to imagine how I would have coped without being able to attend classes or go to comps like the kids are dealing with now (because of COVID).” For 10 years Ash-Leigh danced under Tanya’s direction, achieving success in solo and group competition levels and deepening her love of dance. “I love how physically demanding dance is but I also love that it’s musical, artistic and expressive,” she said. “I love that through dance I’ve learnt that your body is so adaptive, you can train it to do literally anything if you work hard enough.” At the age of 17, Ash-Leigh moved to Melbourne to study full time at The Australian Conservatoire of Ballet under the direction of Christine Walsh AM. “I was at the Conservatoire for two years, training and learning six days a week plus workshops and rehearsals during school holidays,” Ash-Leigh said. “I graduated with an Advanced Diploma of Dance in Elite Performance and the highlight was being a cygnet in their production of Swan Lake at Hamer Hall. “Being in that production meant I got to learn the iconic variation of the four swans that do the entire dance with linked arms which is extremely tough, yet extremely rewarding.”

◆ SWANNING AROUND: Ash-Leigh was fortunate enough to perform in Swan Lake at Hamer Hall during her time at The Australian Conservatoire of Ballet.

Sneaky snakes WITH the warmer weather and recent rainfall, snakes are out and about and that means increased risk of snake bites for our furry friends. Signs to watch for in dogs include vomiting, salivation, diarrhoea, increased respiratory rate, trembling, collapse and paralysis. Some dogs may appear to have initial symptoms and then seemingly recover, before suffering major collapse. It is therefore important to seek veterinary attention if at all suspicious of snake envenomation. In cats, clinical signs often develop slower and can be seen up to twelve to twenty-four hours after exposure. There are many myths about what to do if your animal is bitten including putting gunpowder on the bite site and setting fire, cutting both ears off and throwing them in the dam and administering Vitamin C; clearly all of which will do more harm than good! It is advised that you take any pet that is suspected or known to have been bitten by a snake to your veteri-

with Amy Brown BVSc, Wangaratta Veterinary Clinic narian immediately. The sooner treatment of anti-venom and fluid therapy is commenced, the better the chance of survival. The most common bites we see in Victoria are from the brown, tiger and red belly black snakes. Fortunately, there is no need to spend time trying to identify them as there is a combination anti-venom which covers all snake types. The speed in which dogs and cats will show clinical signs from snake envenomation can vary significantly - some pets may show progressive signs over several hours, whilst others can be close to death within minutes It is therefore important to familiarise yourself with signs of snake bite and if you are at all suspicious your pet may have been bitten to contact your vet immediately.

Kids in the garden INVOLVING kids in gardening has so many benefits. With the weather warming up and all this time stuck at home it is a great way to teach kids about nature, encourage healthy eating, tech soil science and biology whilst getting some vitamin D and outdoor activity. From around the age of three, kids will enjoy becoming responsible for watering window-side seedlings, a large pot of flowers and even their own little garden bed of vegetables. They can water and weed, dig for worms and plant the seedlings. You could plant out a butterfly garden of colourful blooms and catch your child’s imagination with snap dragons, scented peas, cosmos and aster daisies. Tomatoes, peas and strawberries are especially easy to grow and kids will enjoy each aspect from planting, mulching, watering, harvesting and eating. Provide them with a little basket to collect their har-

vest in and then create a healthy and colourful afternoon tea picnic. If you are not a big green thumb, herbs are an easy place to start. Potted herb gardens allow for a sensory experience for kids and each herb variety has different textured leaves and are often very fragrant as well as unique flavours. I get my kids to harvest our peppermint forest and they love to crush the leaves, taking in the peppermint scent and chewing on some of the leaves. Other fun garden projects kids will love are building a bird bath or setting out very shallow dishes of water for the birds over summer, collecting worms for a worm farm, collecting leaves, flowers and grasses and mixing up ‘fairy potions’ and making insect hotels. There are so many ideas you can google to enjoy gardening together.

Morrisons of Glenrowan Family Reserve Shiraz 2018 THERE is no doubt many families would have been disappointed not to enjoy the company of their dads and grandpas on Sunday. Perhaps it’s worth remembering Father’s Day is celebrated on all different days in different countries and pretty much every month of the year, there is a Father’s Day taking place somewhere. Retailers like to push us towards September to sell their aftershave, socks and power tools, but there is nothing wrong with making a call, sending or a card or a funny text on any day of the year. When the time is right we’ll all get together as a family again and when you do, why not splash out with a quality bottle like Morrisons of Glenrowan Family Reserve Shiraz everyone will enjoy? It’s a wine designed to be true to the region, personally selected by the winemakers for the complexity lent by their particular French and American oak barrels. It has a deep, purple red colour and the rich aroma of juicy fruits like blackberry, with deep and lovely savoury spice. The flavour is also rich and lush with savoury berry fruits, a

hint of cassis and perhaps even chocolate. It’s one you will like to hold in your mouth for a while, enjoying its weight and smooth texture. While it would be indulgent alongside some slow roasted beef cheeks served sticky-sweet, it is also just fine on its own, sipped from a fishbowl-sized glass. If you can’t get together, send him a bottle and then enjoy it face to face - over Zoom.

PRICE: About $35 a bottle.

This Day in History, 1838 THIS is the date usually accepted as the beginnings of permanent European settlement at Wangaratta. Overlanders had come and gone, but Joseph Docker and his family, and David Reid stayed. The Dockers took up the land abandoned by the Faithfulls north of the Ovens River, while the Reids settled at Carraragarmungee. Others followed, from the south as well as the north. So many ventured beyond the approved settled areas of New South Wales that the authorities were eventually forced to recognise their existence, and to license their new runs.

Spring into Spring DO you feel sluggish after winter? Low in energy and motivation? Wanting to lose a few extra kilos? In our busy world these are all very common feelings as the weather warms up and we want to spend more time outdoors. Every day we are exposed to a vast number of toxic substances that we may not even be aware of—in the foods we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink and the environment we surround ourselves in. To stay truly well and experience renewed vigour this spring, it is vital to help our body clear these toxins. The beneficial nutrients in whole

Fruit fly activity Fruit fly numbers are expected to increase in September as adult flies that survived winter become active as the weather warms up. Fruit that is ripening or ripe nearby may become infested with the new season’s fruit fly generation, so it important to pick up or harvest and destroy all unwanted fruit at this time of year. Stop the spread Queensland fruit fly (Qfly) will start to increase in numbers and are expected to be trapped earlier in urban locations than peri-urban and rural areas. It is recommended urban householders clean up unwanted fruit, monitor for Qfly presence and, if needed, carry out fruit fly control practices.

strong, with her parents still here, as well as the dance school she loves (albeit under new ownership) and she returns regularly when COVID restrictions allow. “Sam (Pulvirenti) reached out to me and asked if I wanted to teach some classes while another teacher was on maternity leave and I jumped at the chance to come back to teach at the school where my love for dance began,” she said. “I have been so fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from teachers/choreographers that are ridiculously inspiring to me. “I had the pleasure of learning from the likes of Todd Patrick, Amanda Stone, Kelley Abbey, Kristen King, Dana Jolly, Kathryn McCormack, Stephen Tannos, Squared Division, Michael Ralph, Andy Hallsworth, Christine Walsh, Michelle Hopper-Doyle - the list could go on and on. “Soooooo many inspiring humans. “It’s empowering to know that if there is something you want to achieve, you can absolutely achieve it and I’m so grateful that dance has taught me that.”

GONE FISHING

MONEY MATTERS

◆ NICE CATCH: A Macquarie Perch caught in Wangaratta last Thursday evening. These fish were once abundant in Wangaratta, but have been extinct from the river for decades. They are now making a strong comeback.

Lockdown, rainfall made trout opening a non event The 2021 Victorian trout opening was on Saturday just gone, and thanks to the current lockdown it was about as immense as the Y2k bug that hit on January 1, 2000. It didn’t eventuate! As a result I have no reports of trout being caught this week. Those that are lucky enough to live within 5km of a trout stream were met with a wall of water falling from the sky on Friday night. Trout opening this year really was a disaster. But it’s not all bad news. All of this water should lead to some fast growth rates of trout in the streams at the moment, including the new fry that have just recently been spawned. Wet periods in winter and spring often lead to improved trout fishing, so hopefully we have a good season once things settle, and the government gives us bail! On a more personal note, I managed to sneak in a few quick fishing sessions in Wangaratta before the river rose and got dirty.

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA Across a few short fishing sessions I managed to catch a handful of carp, one crayfish on worms and a small Macquarie Perch, right in the heart of Wangaratta. Macquarie Perch have been extinct from the Ovens River for many years but thanks to restocking, habitat restoration and some very passionate people, they are making a comeback which is just fantastic. The forecast is for some drier weather for a while now which should give the streams a chance to flush out. I will be watching the water levels closely in the hope of being able to wet a line again very soon.

Buy Now Pay Later: hidden danger potentially stopping you from owning your own home THE Buy Now Pay Later sector is winning over the youth demographic with the promise of instant gratification, but leading mortgage brokers are warning that with every sugar-high comes the risk of a corresponding low. Buy Now Pay Late providers such as AfterPay and Zip Pay have experienced massive growth in popularity, with the number of users jumping from 400,000 to approximately two million between 2015 and 2018 to 7.3 million users in February 2020. Driven by a simple proposition whereby the Buy Now Pay Later provider pays the merchant on behalf of the customer, allowing the customer to obtain the goods or receive a service immediately while subsequently paying off the debt generally through instalments, Buy Now Pay Later presents a tempting offering. But as the sector’s breakneck growth continues, mortgage professionals

are warning users, particularly in the younger demographic, to be cautious of overdoing it as this could risk effecting their chances of securing a home loan further down the track. “This might be ok for someone that manages their money well, if they pay off the item on time and use their mortgage offset account correctly,” one leading broker told the Mortgage and Finance Association of Australia. “This way they’re delaying expenses and offsetting more of their savings against their home loan. “But there’s probably one per cent of people doing that and the rest of them are spending beyond their means.” As a result, according to the same broker, there may also be a stigma associated with using Buy Now Pay Later schemes rather than paying up-front and in-full.

“Utilising this payment method may potentially send the wrong message to a bank,” they said. “If a lender sees a ‘buy now pay later’ provider frequently on a client’s bank statements, that can trigger more questions about their spending behaviours and ultimately may mean they choose to decline the application. “I would much prefer to see my clients save for the item and demonstrate those good habits.” It’s important to appropriately manage your expenses well in advance of applying for a home loan, that way you can show the bank that you can save and afford to service a mortgage when the time comes. If you are concerned about your level of expenditure or your ability to secure a home loan, a conversation with your local mortgage broker could set you on the right path so contact them today.
