◆ ROLLING HILLS OF HOME: Lauren Ritchie wears her entry from the Myer Millinery Award 2020 - Fashions on Your Front Lawn with another headpiece nearby. PHOTO: Belinda Harrison

By BELINDA HARRISON “I’LL be wearing ribbons down my back this summer,” sang the character of Irene Molloy, widow and funloving milliner who owns a hat shop in the 1969 movie Hello Dolly. While Greta West milliner Lauren Ritchie’s hats don’t usually have ribbons trailing off them, they do have a certain flair and have graced the heads of many wellto-do types just like the ones Irene Molloy would have catered to in her 1890s New York boutique. Born and bred in the Wangaratta area, Lauren’s love for textiles began when she studied the subject at Wangaratta High School. “Gayle O’Keefe was my teacher at school and was a key influence and support for me to explore my creative passion as a career,” Lauren said. “In my final year of schooling, my sister Erin and I did a weekend short course at Albury TAFE run by a woman named Elizabeth Hemsley and I absolutely loved it. “Erin is a skilled dressmaker in her own right but a practising lawyer by day and has modelled a number of my headpieces for photo shoots usually wearing dresses we made under our partnership Two Sewing Sisters and we love working together.” When Lauren moved to Melbourne to study Fashion Design at RMIT, she found a millinery course at Kangan Institute. “I was able to do my university course during the day and millinery classes during the evening and I was so glad I didn’t have to choose to do one or the other,” she said. As part of her studies, Lauren completed work experience with Louise Macdonald who is one of Melbourne’s leading milliners. “After my work experience finished, Louise invited me to work with her for that Spring Racing season,” she said. “I learnt so much on the job and was excited to continue my formal studies and complete my Bachelor of Fashion and a further Certificate IV in Millinery.” Once upon a time, milliners specialised in designing or making hats and headpieces just for women, but today the term refers to hat making in general. “Milliners use wooden hat blocks that could be described as moulds that they shape and stretch material over to create their piece,” Lauren explained.

Hoof abscess IT’S getting hot (and steamy) round here. The news is out, we’re in for a warm, wet summer - every horse lovers worst nightmare. We all know the drill, the horse was sound yesterday, and today you come out to find him lame with no apparent injury. Odds are, your horse has developed a hoof abscess, something that nearly all horse owner encounter a some point in their horse life. Hoof abscesses occur when bacteria get trapped between the sensitive laminae and the hoof wall or sole. An abscess forms and builds up behind the hoof wall or sole, increasing pressure in the hoof and causing the horse a significant degree of pain. Often, the horse will be lame with more prominent pulse at the fetlock and pain on palpation of the coronary band.

with Dr Ellie Merritt, Warby Street Veterinary Hospital There is sometimes mild swelling of the affected limb and the hoof can feel hot. Veterinary treatment should be sought for any equine lameness as a hoof abscess can appear similar to other, more serious diseases. The quickest way to relieve hoof abscess pain is to relieve the pressure by draining the abscess. This will sometimes occur spontaneously after softening the hoof with a poultice. Often the vet or farrier will create a pathway in the hoof for the abscess to drain. Maintaining good hoof health with regular farriery and keeping the horse out of extremely dry or wet conditions is important to avoid hoof abscesses developing.

◆ EXCELLENT GROWTH: Diggers’ Speedwell or Veronica perfoliata is easily managed and can completely suppress weed growth. PHOTOS: Helen Van Riet

Veronica perfoliata DIGGERS’ Speedwell [Veronica perfoliata] is a tidy clumping perennial understorey plant which is useful as an edging plant or for underplanting in dappled shade. It is easy to grow, and unfussed with soil type, provided it is welldrained. It also makes a handsome pot plant. Diggers’ Speedwell occurs naturally in New South Wales, the ACT and Victoria and has a wide distribution across these three states. It shows great variation in leaf shape, with narrow-leaved plants mostly occurring in drier areas and broadleaved plants in moister, cooler sites. The plant pictured above is the local Warby Ranges form. When not in flower, this lovely little sub-shrub may be mistaken for a juvenile eucalypt, as the sil-

ver-grey, rounded opposite leaves are fused onto upright, semi-rigid stems. The derivation of the epithet perfoliata relates to the leaf form. It means having ‘perfoliate’ leaves, so the stem appears to be passing through the joined pairs of leaves, as in the photo above. In late spring, dainty sky-blue flowers which are held aloft on arching stems are a lovely foil against the grey glaucous leaves. After flowering, the stems can be cut back, and the plant will quickly respond with fresh new growth. The observant gardener may find seedlings which have germinated near the parent plant. Ripe seed will also germinate with no pre-treatment. Cuttings strike readily. Over time, mature plants

may lightly sucker to form a dense ground cover. The suckering growth can be removed and potted on to form new plants. V. perfoliata is a very polite garden subject and is easily managed. In our garden a cutting-grown plant has formed a clump measuring about 1m x 2 m over a period of 15 years. This clump completely supresses weed growth. This is a come-again plant. If stressed for moisture, the leaves will become desiccated, but the plant will revive rapidly with a good soaking. Likewise, in a severe winter, the stems will freeze, but the plant will re-grow from the roots and flower in spring. This popular Australian garden subject is readily available from the nursery trade.

De Bortoli Rutherglen Estate Pinot Grigio 2021 A GREY shrike-thrush has made a nest in a plant basket right next to my front door. They have the most beautiful song and it’s a thrill to listen to the couple singing to each other, at the same time collecting worms and tending to the first of their chicks to hatch. It was a bit tricky getting in and out of the house without disturbing them and waiting until they were off scavenging before watering my plant, but worth it in the long run to hear the chicks arrive. Living with nature and whatever the seasons bring is part of the beauty of being in North East Victoria. The fruit for Rutherglen Estate’s 2021 Pinot Grigio was grown during what was an ideal year for grapes in Rutherglen. There were regular rainfall events and it was a mild summer, so the grapes gradually reached their full potential, which is apparently why this white wine has such nuanced flavour. It has a pale straw colour and really fresh, inviting aromas of

pear and citrus blossom. It’s crisp and dry, with pear fruit, subtle hints of almond and a pleasant texture that becomes more savoury and nutty after spending a little more time in the glass. Lightly chilled it’s ideal to enjoy on the verandah at the end of a warm day. We just need to access it via the back door for another week or so, so as not to disturb the new arrivals. PRICE: About $22.

This Day in History, 1929 ALARMED at a loss of freight revenue to road transport, the Victorian Railways moved to tie up on contract a number of Wangaratta businesses exclusively to railway usage. By the late 1920s, passenger traffic by rail had fallen dramatically. An indication of the popularity of the road for travellers to Melbourne from the country and interstate was given by a police traffic count on the Hume Highway, during the Melbourne Cup Carnival. The officer in charge of the police reported that over a period of eight days, the average number of cars passing through Albury on their way to Melbourne was 800. The railways, having seen their passenger revenue fall, were determined to protect their freight revenue against the competition of road transport, and agreement with over 50 Wangaratta businessmen to provide exclusive carriage of their freight for 12 months, in return for cheaper rates, was reached in December 1929.

with Georgia Vujic, Youth Counsellor, headspace Albury Wodonga ◆ STRESSFUL TIME: Christmas, summer and bushfire season can all cause stress so make sure you take care of yourself.

Stress and summer time DISASTERS - particularly those that impact whole communities - can make recovery slow and stressful. The people around us we used to rely on when we needed a hand, when we needed advice, or just some company, are equally as stressed. Whatever ‘it’ is, they’ve been through ‘it’ too. They might not be there to give the help, they might be giving you signals that they don’t want to or can’t help you right now, or you might not want to ask. If you’re finding a particular time or event hard for you - for example it could be the coming of summer, New Years’ Eve, or the TV ads to remind you to clean your gutters because bushfire season is coming - there’s a few things you can do. Remember that this too shall pass

- this feeling, this ‘one year later’, the first time you’ve seen, felt, or heard that thing that triggers those memories is the hardest. Time will not take away the pain completely, but it will soften the edges and allow you new ways to move forward, to adapt, and to overcome the pain. This might happen quickly, it might happen slowly, but if you’re stuck and can’t see a way through, reach out to someone who can help. Prepare yourself as much as possible. If you can sense a day or days you might be vulnerable, plan to make that day the easiest you can. Take the day off, do things that warm your heart, treat yourself, and surround yourself with positive and supportive people,

“There are so many different styles and options of hats and headpieces these days - you are really only limited by your imagination. “My favourite thing is to make custom pieces for clients because I can create something to suit them as an individual and that they love because they have something special that no one else does.” Lauren has spent much of the last two years back at the family home in Greta, spending time walking in the beautiful countryside and drawing inspiration from it. “It’s a typical COVID story - Erin and I were living in Melbourne and when COVID started last March we decided we’d come home for a couple of weeks while it blew over,” she said. “We were here for nine months. “We returned to Melbourne and then when the next lot of lockdowns hap-

pened we decided to do the same thing and come back for a couple of weeks. “Being back here has inspired me to stop and listen to the sounds of the local area and look to the skyline. “In the springtime particularly, the landscape is brought to life with beautiful birds and the flowing lines of the green rolling hills, which in turn has inspired my designs.” One of those designs included Lauren’s entry for the 2021 Myer Millinery Award VRC Fashions on Your Front Lawn entitled With Love from Laceby. “I looked to the hills around me to inspire the flowing lines of my design - I wanted the tails to float up into the sky to draw your attention upwards and to the beautiful land around us,” she said. In 2020, Lauren won the Backyard Ascot competition hosted by Millinery Hub for her piece Aves Halo. “I loved the piece I made as it featured naturally malted bird feathers

and the judges commented on the high standard of quality workmanship that was required to create the piece which is something I take a lot of pride in,” she said. Lauren has created many pieces for race days, but recently has focused on special occasion wear including a wedding collection. “I love creating something unique - hats and headpieces are a beautiful accessory that transform an outfit,” shesaid. “I love seeing someone put on a piece they love and feel good in.” Lauren and Erin’s seven month old Spoodle Fergus is also set to get in on the millinery action. “With Christmas just around the corner we will definitely look to make Fergus a festive bowtie of some sort.” For more information on Lauren and her work, visit https://laurenjritchie. com/.

GONE FISHING

MONEY MATTERS

◆ NICE TROUT COD: Wangaratta angler Brett Corker caught and released this magnificent trout cod caught on a spinnerbait in the Ovens River near Wangaratta on Saturday afternoon.

Murray cod season opens with plenty of fish caught THE 2021-2022 Murray cod season has now opened, with many keen anglers hitting the water at first light last Wednesday morning. Over the weekend the region swelled with anglers from far afield keen to catch their first Murray cod of the season. Thousands of these anglers made their way to Lake Mulwala for the 2021 Cod Classic. Across the board the Murray cod fishing seemed quite good. Some people caught nothing, some caught more than 20 cod on opening day, but most managed to pick up a cod or two. Both trout cod and Murray cod have been caught on lures and bait with cheese being the most popular bait. Terry Alexander opened his season with a lovely Murray cod of around 70cm which he caught on cheese. The fish was released. I have caught a few cod myself on diving hard body lures, all in or close to Wangaratta. I have had three twilight sessions casting surface lures, and am yet to get a touch on a surface lure. Brett Corker did however catch a nice Murray cod on a surface lure the night before typing this report. Speaking of Brett, he managed

◆ TO REFINANCE OR NOT TO REFINANCE: Refinancing isn’t for everyone, but working with a broker can help you decide if it’s right for you.

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA to catch a superb trout cod near Wangaratta on Saturday afternoon on a spinnerbait, which was of course released as is required by law. So the cod season is off to a fantastic start for many people, but I can not fail to mention the amazing trout fishing. Due to the cool and wet spring, the amazing trout fishing continues. Three days into the cod season I found myself in a tributary of the Ovens River casting my 4wt fly rod and having the time of my life. The best flies were a gold bead headed nymph, and Royal Stimulator. The Royal Stimulator worked best when I took the nymph off and fished with just the one fly. It seems that the trout prefer the nymph which is sub surface, but if it is not there they will readily take the stimulator off the surface.

When is the best time to refinance your home loan? REFINANCING your home involves reviewing your current mortgage and potentially swapping your loan to another lender, who can better meet your current needs, wants and circumstances. Refinancing can also allow you to consolidate your debts or pay down your mortgage more quickly or access equity in the home. However, refinancing is not suited to everyone. There are many factors you will need to consider when thinking about refinancing a loan. Before you initiate an application to refinance, your broker will need to assess your needs and objectives as well as your current financial situation. The first step is to speak to a professional about your needs and whether you can afford a different loan structure or other change to your mortgage, particularly if you have more than one property. Some people are savvy researchers and will want to take advantage of a lower interest rate from another lender should

with Win Securities Limited that be available to reduce repayments. While saving money is often one of the biggest benefits of refinancing, it may not be as straightforward as that and careful consideration is required. The broker will need to find out about your existing loan, repayments, current loan structure, current financial situation, including your income, any other current debts and about any assets you own. The current value of the property is also taken into consideration, so your broker will have access to current data that will indicate what your property is likely to be worth. The broker will then review the various loan options and figure out whether it’s worth it for you to refinance. Sometimes it’s not worth it if it’s only going to save a couple of hundred dollars a year, particularly when you take into consideration the exit and application fees involved.

However, if it’s going to save upward of $1000 a year, refinancing might be a sensible approach. In some cases, the mortgage broker can tell you if getting a lower interest rate from your current lender can be achieved without refinancing. One of the risks of refinancing your home loan is that you may need to pay Lender’s Mortgage Insurance (LMI) to your new lender. If you do decide to go down the refinancing path, working with a broker rather than going straight to a lender has advantages. Brokers generally have access to loan options from a range of different lenders and if there’s a better opportunity for you, they’re usually able to access it. Speak to your MFAA accredited broker at Win Securities Limited (ACL No 240901) to help you look at alternate options to consolidate your personal loans and credit cards into the one loan. Win Securities Limited is at 37 Reid Street Wangaratta - call (03) 5721 5200 or email info@winsec.com.au.
