◆ CYCLING ODYSSEY: Sharon and Justin Scholz are riding around the country on their tandem bike.
Two people, two wheels, 16,000km By NATHAN DE VRIES MOST people would think an around-the-country odyssey sounds like a fun time, but not many would attempt the journey on a tandem bicycle. That’s exactly what Wangaratta fitness fanatics Justin and Sharon Scholz are undertak-
ing, riding around the country on their bright yellow tandem bike, Happy. Justin said the idea sounded like fun. “We usually travel overseas each year, but with COVID it was clear we weren’t likely to be leaving Australia in 2021,” he said.
“We have friends who attempted a circumnavigation by bicycle last year but couldn’t get into WA so they came down through Alice Springs to SA before heading home to Terrigal, north of Sydney. “We figured we might as well do something similar as it looked like fun.
“I have to be in Adelaide for a six day walking event that I’ve entered by mid-September; everything is on schedule.” The duo started out from Wangaratta in the early hours of Tuesday, April 27, and they haven’t looked back. “Day one was a 197km trip
up and over Mount Hotham to Omeo, with 2700m of climbing and a total weight of just over 190kg; it was tough,” Justin said. “By the time we reached Sydney in the first seven days, we’d completed 1050km with more than 13,000 metres of climbing.
“The first week was always expected to be the hardest, and intentionally designed that way to prove to us that we could manage the rest.” The decision to ride tandem was an easy one for the couple, being no strangers to the experience.

Medial luxating patellas A MEDIALLY luxating patella is a kneecap that does not sit nicely in line with the knee but instead moves in and out of the groove of the knee. Over time this movement will cause arthritis to build up and this will make the knee very painful, and the dog will become lame. Most commonly small dogs will be predisposed to this disease and it is normally secondary to the back legs having a deformity that causes them to not be straight, this bow in the leg will pull the patella out of place. This is something that develops over time and as they grow the patella as well as the arthritis will become worse. Early in the disease before there is a large amount of arthritis in the knee dogs can have a skipping or hopping gait especially when they run, over time as the knee becomes worse, they will develop a severe lameness. Medially luxating patellas can generally be diagnosed by your vet by feeling whether the patella can be moved in and out of place, sometimes this does require sedation

with Ovens & Kiewa Veterinary Hospital especially if they are sore. X-rays are also used to determine the rotation in the leg and how much the leg needs to be straightened. This disease can be treated surgically, which involves moving the patella back into place, deepening the groove that it sits in and straightening the leg to stop it from pulling the patella out of place again. This can be a very successful surgery which will help reduce further arthritis from building up in the knee and reduce pain and lameness in the knee. Because of this it is more successful to perform surgery early in the disease process before there is lots of arthritic changes in the knee. Some dogs will also require long term arthritis management plans including medications and exercise regimes. If you are concerned about lameness in your dog’s leg get in touch with your local vet.

Grow a little gum tree - part 2
AT the end of autumn is the time when many plants go into dormancy. It is also when many Australian plants come into their own. Established garden favourites such as some hakeas, banksias, croweas and correas are well-known in the nursery trade. These beauties are often featured at the entry to plant nurseries, for who can resist buying the promise of instant potted colour on a dull winter’s day? Look further. On a back table may be found some quiet achievers where patience of the discerning gardener will be amply rewarded. Small-growing eucalypts (gum trees) are well worth seeking out. Every garden should have at least one small feature tree, and an iconic small Australian eucalypt can be a marvellous feature. A little eucalypt from WA and suit-
ed to north-east Victoria is Eucalyptus websteriana. It will reach about three metres (h) x two metres (w) in about six years. It casts lightly dappled shade, allowing underplanting with small shrubs and groundcovers. The silver-grey leaves are heartshaped, and the grey and lime-green slender trunk and branches are clothed in minni-ritchi bark (as in the photo). E. websteriana can be pruned to shape, and is suitable for tub planting. The creamy-golden flowers are prolific and lightly scented. Flowers produce copious nectar. The globular buds and seed capsules are silvery grey. This delightful little tree will grow well in most well-drained soils. It does not need water or fertilizer once established. When grown in a tub, the addition of supplementary water and slow-re-
᛬
lease fertilizer is recommended. There are many delightful small eucalypts suitable for the suburban garden. Some are becoming more readily available from the nursery trade as the focus on water-wise gardening becomes more prominent. These little trees can be pruned to shape, and those with lignotubers can be coppiced. A few favourites are: E. caesia ssp. caesia (not to be confused with “Silver Princess”), E. preissiana, E. albopurpurea, and E. forrestiana. All can be grown successfully from seed. Seed is available from specialist plant nurseries or through the Australian Plants Society. Early winter is an ideal time for planting seed. Plants can be pricked out in spring and will grow on through summer to be ready for planting out in autumn.

Morrisons of Glenrowan 2018 Premium Reserve JUST when we were beginning to think this whole virus thing was under control, a spanner gets thrown in the works. My heart sank for all those people whose plans were thrown into disarray and for all those business owners who had just lifted themselves up off the canvas, only to be knocked back down yet again. While we knew we shouldn’t be complacent and the possibility of it happening was simmering away in the background, it still knocks you for six when it does happen. The euphoria when the fog clears should also be embraced and it reminds us to always be thankful, and support our local businesses generously when we can. We’re lucky that many centres in the North East are just a hop, skip and jump from the Glenrowan wine region so while the Trails, Tastings and Tails festival may have been postponed, we should jump online or pop out there and support them when we’re able. mium Reserve from the new cellar door. It’s made from 50 per cent of their best Shiraz, 20 per cent Durif and 15 per cent each of Tempranillo, which adds up to delicious. It has a deep, purple red colour and gentle aroma of forest berries and earthy spice. It is full-bodied red, beautifully balanced and feels smooth in the mouth, with flavours of raspberry, blackberry, earthy plum and rich leather. It’s ideal for warming the heart - and that’s something we all need right now. About $35.
This Day in History, 1876 ON this day in 1876, a young man walked across the Murray on a rope. From far and wide the spectators had gathered to see the fun - a fifteen year old youth who promised to imitate the feats of the great tight rope walker Blondin, above the river between Corowa and Wahgunyah. The young man, William Henry Freeman, not only walked across a rope, he skipped across a piece of fencing wire strained across the river, he walked across it backwards, lay down on the wire in mid stream, sat on a chair in the middle, even offered to take any lad who would volunteer across the wire on his back. There were no takers.

How stress can cause physical signs and symptoms STRESS is often associated with low mood or bad tempers and irritability, but stress can cause physical symptoms in many people too. Have you ever felt like your heart is beating too fast or had chest pain, only to discover that there is nothing wrong when you have a heart check up? Do you experience a bloated and queasy tummy, even though every gut test says you are fine? Are you constantly tired and feeling like your memory is somewhere else - maybe with the keys you have misplaced? Most people I talk to tend to have a specific ‘stress holding pattern’ which will dictate where their
body chooses to store stress. Sometimes they don’t even know they are stressed, they just feel a little ‘off balance’. An interesting point to consider, if you have experienced any of the above symptoms, is that mood receptors are found in every organ of the body (with the most being found in the gut). This is why some people experience stress in their tummy, others hold onto stress in their muscles and some of us like to lock it away in our chest. Stress can also down-regulate our immune systems making us more prone to infections, cold, bugs and low energy when we are under pressure. Learning about your own stress pat-
tern and creating a plan so you can identify it early can be a great way to deal with your ‘unusual symptoms’. GONE FISHING
MONEY & BUSINESS
◆ CRAY FISHING: There’s just something special about crayfishing in the depths of winter, looking into the water and watching the net emerge from the depths with giant white claws in it.
Still plenty of local option for anglers WINTER is here and just like every other winter, this fishing column will be going into hiatus for a few months. This is my last report until the last Wednesday in August. For the next three months, the most popular species of fish targeted will be trout, and Murray crayfish. The trout streams close at midnight this coming Monday night (June 14) and will re-open on the first Saturday in September (September 4). The lakes remain open and will be popular with trout anglers. Lake William Hovell is a popular winter trout fishery, so too is Lake Dartmouth and Khancoban pondage. During the first week of the upcoming school holidays the Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) will stock the region’s family friendly waterways with yearling rainbow trout. Lake Sambell, Glenrowan recreation reserve, Stanley Dam and Allan’s Flat waterhole are just some of the many small ponds that get stocked each year. You can find a full list of stocked dams on the VFA website. If you want to catch a huge trophy sized trout, head to the Eildon pondage at Eildon township. It is stocked regularly with the huge ex brood fish from the near-

Trapping grid insights
The Goulburn Murray Valley (GMV) Fruit Fly Area Wide Management program monitors trapping grids in urban, peri-urban and rural locations across the region. These grids are essential to identifying Queensland fruit fly (Qfly) hot spots, timing of management activities and evaluating the effectiveness of programs such as the release of sterile Qfly in Cobram. Populations on the move
Qfly numbers peaked in urban sites during December 2020, while last year’s peak occurred unusually in March 2020. Qfly peaks appear to occur early in urban areas, midseason in peri-urban locations and later in rural sites. One conclusion is that Qfly move

WANGARATTA by Snobs Creek Hatchery. Some of these trout are over six kilograms. Winter is the time of year when the monster Murray cod specialists like to fish Lake Mulwala and the Murray River in search of a giant Murray cod. There’s been some very large cod caught there recently and that should continue all winter. These fish don’t come easy, and are a fish of 1000 casts, but they do come to those that are willing to put in the cold winter hours making cast after cast. Another species of fish that has grown in popularity as a winter fishing option in recent years is the dirty old European carp. They smell a bit, and taste terrible, but they offer a lot of winter fishing enjoyment. Lake Moodemere is my favourite winter carp fishing destination, but most waterways have carp in them that are willing to take a bait.
from urban, through periurban and into rural locations during the season, due to fruit availability. Hot spot activity
The following locations show the average number of Qfly trapped over the current fruit fly period from 1 July 2020 to 21 May 2021 in urban/peri-urban areas of the GMV, from highest to lowest. 1. Nagambie 2. Merrigum 3. Numurkah 4. Euroa 5. Congupna 6. Tatura 7. Mooroopna 8. Shepparton While some areas have high averages, Qfly is not evenly spread over these ‘hot spots’. Of the 16 traps servicing Merrigum and Nagambie, only 3 account for 67 per cent of trappings during 2020/21. Of the Qfly trapped in the GMV during May 2021, 45% were from just 7 of the 395 traps on the grid. If you live in proximity to any of these critical ‘hot spots’ a Project Field Officer may make contact with you to offer advice, support and assistance. Project staff can be contacted for advice by phoning 03 5871 9222.
A fixed rate loan - Is it for you? WITH interest rates at an all-time low, and many lender’s fixed rates lower than their variable options, locking in an interest rate on your home loan to guard against possible future fluctuation may be attractive. However, it’s always good to know the ins and outs of fixed-rate loans before committing to one. If you are purchasing a property, refinancing or just renegotiating with your current lender, as a borrower can generally decide between fixedinterest loans that maintain the same interest rate over a specific period of time, or variable-rate loans that charge interest according to market rate fluctuations. Fixed-rate loans usually come with a few provisos borrowers may be restricted to maximum payments during the fixed term and face hefty break fees for paying off the loan early or switching to variable interest during the fixed rate period.
However, locking in the interest rate on your home loan can offer stability. For those that are budget conscious and who want to protect themselves from the volatility of potential rate movement, a fixed rate loan may be suitable to their needs. Fixed rates are locked in for an amount of time that is prearranged between you and your lender. Some lenders offer seven-year or 10-year fixed terms, but generally one to five years are the most popular for customers because a lot can change in that time. Pre-approval helps you to discern how much money you are likely to have approved on official application. Knowing that your potential lender will offer a fixed-term fixed interest loan gives further peace of mind for those borrowers looking to budget precisely rather than be susceptible to rate fluctuations. In addition, borrowers should con-
sider the possibility of arranging a ‘split’ loan. This option allows you to split your loan between fixed and variable rates - either 50/50 or at some other ratio. This can allow you to ‘lock in’ a fixed interest rate for up to 5 years on a portion of your loan, while the remainder is on a variable rate which may give you more flexibility when interest rates change and potentially minimise the risks associated with interest rate movements. Also, be aware that at the end of the fixed-rate term, your loan agreement will include information about how the loan will then be managed by the lender, usually to a ‘revert’ variable rate - which may not be the lowest the lender offers. MFAA Accredited Finance Brokers are loan specialists. Speak to your local home loan broker at Winsec Savings & Loans 37 Reid Street Wangaratta ACL No. 240901, about how to finance your property purchase and whether you are eligible for pre-approval.
Weather conditions ideal
If the coming winter is not cold or dry enough Qfly will survive the winter by taking refuge in warm spots and become problematical in the coming spring and summer. Qfly must mate to lay eggs into ripe and ripening fruit, however only need to mate once to be able to lay eggs into many fruit over a period of up to two months. Fruit fly mate at dusk and only when the temperature LV KLJKHU WKDQ DERXW Ý& 7KH current weather conditions have contributed to large numbers of Qfly found in the GMV and points to the probability of the survival of large numbers through winter and into spring.
