◆ HAPPY TO HELP: Constable Luke Mason (left) and Police Custody Officer Jacinta Hutton, Constable Jade Reid, Senior Constable Kim Sneddon, Sergeant Glenn Smith and Leading Senior Constable Paul Guy were deeply appreciative of Veronica Bradley’s (middle) support.

Devoted chaplain recognised for her outstanding service to police WANGARATTA police of all ranks were proud to commend Reverend Veronica Bradley, who works selflessly to help not just officers but anyone in need throughout the community. Ms Bradley, who assists police through the Chaplaincy Unit Welfare Services and is a Minister for the Uniting Church Cluster, was awarded in recognition of her excellent work in going above and beyond to support police. This was especially evident during the Head

to Head Walk (an event promoting police mental health) in which she raised almost $5000, and the 2019/20 bushfire emergency. It was after the unfortunate passing of the local police chaplain in Charlton some years ago that Ms Bradley’s journey began.

“It was quite a small town so you got to know members of the local police station and their families in the course of taking kids to school and being part of the community,” she said. “The officers I knew at the local station put my name to the senior chaplain at the funeral. “They thought I might be a good fit.” As one of her daughters works as a paramedic, Ms Bradley knows firsthand the challenges emergency responders can face and the toll it can take.

“Police witness and protect us from some of the worst acts people can do to themselves and one another,” she said. “When I moved to Wangaratta two and a half years ago, I did not imagine I would be covering such a large area. “I cover Wangaratta, Bright, Myrtleford, Glenrowan, Moyhu, Whitfield, Yarrawonga, Katamatite and Tungamah.

Hoof abscesses in horses HOOF abscesses or more correctly, subsolar abscessation, is a common cause of sudden and pronounced lameness in the horse. It can be caused directly by penetrating foreign objects, through migration of bacteria through ďŹ ssures in the sole and hoof or through infection of a bruised sole. Subsolar abscesses can occur in any horse but is more likely to occur in horses with chronic laminitis, white line disease (separation of sole-wall junction), subsolar bruising, under run heels and those that are subjected to environments with excessive moisture (muddy paddocks) or dryness. Most cases present with an acute onset of typically severe lameness with some horses refusing to bear weight on the affected limb. Diagnosis is usually based on several clinical signs including increased heat and digital pulses of the affected hoof and positive sensitivity to hoof testers. Occasionally nerve blocks and radiographs are needed to conďŹ rm an abscess or rule out other causes of foot pain. Treatment consists of establishing drainage through paring out the un-

with With Andrew Colson, BVCs (hons), Ovens and Kiewa Veterinary Hospital dermined sole with a hoof knife. To maintain drainage a poultice bandage is then applied to the foot. Once drainage is complete, the hoof will need to be kept dry and clean until a new layer of keratinised tissues covers the defect. Despite popular belief, antibiotics are seldom required if adequate drainage has been established. However a tetanus booster and anti-inammatories are commonly administered. When identiďŹ ed and treated appropriately, the majority of horses with hoof abscess have a very good prognosis with a drastic and rapid improvement in the signs of lameness. Occasionally deeper structures may be affected and more extensive treatment and surgery required - which is why it is important that a diagnosis is made early on in the course of a lame horse.

Dry season management of young fruit trees WE have all experience drought and water restrictions over the past 10 years or so and often the lack of water can come at the expense of young trees which have been planted in the autumn, winter or spring. Santa & D’Sas 2019 Pinot Grigio NOT for the first time, a friend of mine shared her frustration at beloved family members who didn’t understand the concept of taking it in turns to make dinner. She said while her partner or children would volunteer to take it on, it seems they couldn’t do it without asking her first what they should have, how to do it and where the ingredients were. And I totally understand - the reason why those who usually bear the burden sometimes find it exhausting is not the cooking, but the thinking, planning and shopping required, day after day. If you’re going to volunteer to do it - figure it out for yourself - and call me to the table when it’s ready. In an effort to do my bit I’m happy to open a bottle, and it might be a Santa & D’Sas Pinot Grigio. The wine is made from fruit sourced from the King Valley region which was picked in the early morning of a late February day. It has a pale straw colour and fruity and floral aroma - with pear, melon and some citrus blossom. There is pear fruit and lemon citrus in the flavour of this dry, white wine, but also a little creamy spice which adds some complexity.

Not all supplements are created equally

When lightly chilled it’s clean and refreshing, but then more subtle nutty qualities start to appear. The wine is food friendly and extremely versatile - which is just what you want when you have no idea what is going to served up. And that just the way I like it.

PRICE: About $23 a bottle.

This Day in History, 1896 THE early days of cycling produced some strange match races, one of which was conducted on this day in 1896 at the Wangaratta Cricket ground. The rivals were the local priest, Rev Fr. Smith and the local doctor, Dr McCardel. Fr. Smith was mounted on a Humber cycle, while the doctor had secured a special lightweight Sterling cycle, thinking this would give him an edge over the one mile of the challenge. Two hundred people gathered in the cool of the late afternoon to see the match. In spite of the doctor having the advantage of a lightweight cycle, Fr. Smith obviously had superior forces on his side, for he outsprinted Dr McCardel at the finish, winning by three hundred yards.

YOU may notice we don’t list many herbs or specific supplement brands/ names in these articles as a general rule. This is not because we are keeping them secret, but for two important reasons. The first is that naturopathic medicine is all about individual medicine (which includes diet, exercise and relaxation prescriptions in equal measures to supplements). We don’t actually use protocols or have a single prescription for each disease. We like to mix it up and find the best combination of medicines and lifestyle support to match you and your lifestyle. We need a full health history to ensure the right supplements to take, how much, how often, for how long and just as importantly, when to stop. Do you need magnesium for your leg cramps, simply to hydrate or is iron

deficiency the cause for you? These are some of the questions we ask ourselves to work out how to treat the complex list of symptoms presented to us. It is beyond the scope of these generalised articles to go into such detail, but instead to provide a snapshot of some simple ideas you can try before deciding to talk to us about a tailor made plan. The second factor is that not all supplements are created equally: Do you know how many B vitamins are in your multivitamin? Do you know if there are enough to remedy your fatigue or PMS? Do you realise that some supplements have very little vitamin in them and a whole lot of tablet filler? Do you know why one fish oil is better than another? What are the levels of the EPA and DHA in your fish oils and have they been tested for mercury levels?

Have they been processed with peroxide and damaged? Do you know that oxide forms of magnesium aggravate the gut creating diarrhoea, while chelated forms are easily taken up by the body to provide energy? Do you realise that inorganic forms of iron bind in the gut causing constipation, while organic forms are easily absorbed with little side effects? We only prescribe and recommend brands of supplements that we know are full to the brim with vitamins, herbs and minerals in the correct dose and form. So we will continue to contribute wonderful general advice via these articles, but please talk to us before you buy supplements and end up taking the wrong dose or form of supplement, which can make you feel worse or do nothing at all and simply be a waste of time and money.

Devoted chaplain recognised for her outstanding service to police Ŷ

From page 1

“It’s about building relationships so that people are comfortable with you and that you don’t just turn up when something awful happens.” Ms Bradley said her work during last year’s fire season was to support not just police members but also other emergency services that were working out of Tallangatta and Ovens. “The award was to acknowledge the work that I do to support members’ welfare,” she said. “The other thing the certificate acknowledged was that I raised funds by riding my bike and walking to get to 500km over 60 days.” After her own experience with postnatal depression and anxiety, Ms Bradley said she knows the importance of supporting others and

mental health awareness. “What I love about chaplaincy is the people, they are amazing and what they do is amazing,” she said. “I like helping people and feel passionate about serving the community. “I love driving and looking at the beautiful place we live in, driving around all the stations is a joy for me.” Ms Bradley said unfortunately due to COVID, it had made it more challenging to be able to support police members this year. “When the four officers were killed on the Eastern Freeway I was disappointed I couldn’t go in, so I decided to light the church blue at night,” she said. “I just wanted the station to know that they were being thought of and prayed for.

“We also joined the Anglican Church in ringing the church bell and praying for emergency services and hospital staff each day at 12pm.” In her everyday life, Ms Bradley loves to foster animals through RSPCA, is an avid cook and is even learning how to play the guitar and piano. “I am really passionate about foster care and have cared for more than 25 children in the years before I started in ministry,” she said. “During COVID, it has been challenging working out how to do worship services online and care for my congregation members who aren’t able to access online resources. “I am immensely proud of what our congregation has managed to achieve this year to keep everyone connected and cared for.”

GONE FISHING

◆ MAGNIFICENT MURRAY COD: Tim Galley with a lovely 73cm Murray cod caught on bait in Wangaratta on cod opening last Tuesday.

Rivers fishing well for Murray cod and trout AS many of you know last Tuesday was the opening day of the new Murray cod season. Many anglers flocked to the waterways in search of their first Murray cod of the season. I fished on the outskirts of Wangaratta with my mate Rohan Jenna. We had a slow morning, landing and releasing just one Murray cod around 40cm at 5.30am and losing a couple of others. In the evening I went out with my mate Brett Corker and we had a similar result, landing and releasing just one similar sized Murray cod. Reports from right around the region indicate that most people did better than we did. My Dad and his brother caught around a dozen Murray cod on opening morning in the Ovens River, trolling with a green Predator lure, made here in Wangaratta. Tim Galley managed to catch quite a few Murray cod using bait in the middle of Wangaratta with his biggest being a magnificent 73cm. Aside from the above mentioned reports of the Ovens Riv

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA

with Roberta Horne er, I have had excellent reports of Murray cod being caught in the Broken River, King River, Kiewa River and Murray River downstream of Lake Mulwala. I have not heard many reports from Lake Mulwala, although no doubt they won’t be too far away. Away from the cod fishing there is still some great trout fishing on offer around North East Victoria thanks to recent rainfall keeping the streams topped up. Now is a great time to go trout fishing as the opening of the Murray cod season usually see’s a bit less fishing pressure on the trout streams as anglers switch to Murray cod fishing. I had a report of some great trout fishing in the Ovens River upstream of Bright during the week as well as the Howqua River which runs into Lake Eildon.

AGBIZ ASSIST ◆ HERE TO HELP: Now is a good time to reflect on the challenges of 2020 and implement strategies for 2021 and beyond.

Farmers - ‘tis the season to be ready THIS is the time of the year when many of us traditionally start to wind down and put aside a little time to reflect, not only on the past 12 months but also to size up the year ahead. Despite not being able to predict what an off-the-scale year 2020 turned out to be, there is obvious value in scrutinising all the challenges it has thrown up as we look for opportunities to plan for a more optimistic future. This is where one of our well trained and highly experienced Rural Financial Counsellors may come in handy. Over the past three decades, we have assisted hundreds of primary producers and those in associated
