Robots to stage battle royale

By SIMONE KERWIN

THE strangely hypnotic sight of two robots locked in combat until one is disabled or destroyed has developed a cult TV following in recent years. Local residents who have enjoyed the series ‘Battle Bots’ - as well as those new to the concept - will get a taste of what all the fuss is about when Wangaratta Robotics Club hosts a Regional Battle Bots Competition on Saturday, February 20 from 5pm to 8pm. “It is a different weight class, at 150 grams, but it’s the same idea (as the TV show) - with two bots going into the arena to battle it out,” Lachie Carboon, one of the organisers of the event, explained. “There are two classes of robot involved - destructive and non-destructive - and they will compete in an arena which is 1m x 1m x 1m and fully enclosed to keep the bots safe, with perspex all around it to allow for viewing. “There’s a pit in the corner of the arena, and you can win by either pushing another robot down that hole, or hitting the robot enough that it can’t move.” The regional competition will be held at the Wangaratta Digital Hub (situated to the left of the Wangaratta Library entrance in Docker Street), with organisers hoping to attract entrants from as far afield as Albury and Melbourne. While spectator numbers will depend on COVID-19 restrictions, it’s hoped there will be scope to livestream the event to enable a wider audience and build interest in the pursuit.

Keeping yourself and your dog safe WHEN you are out and about with your dog, or even just on your own, sometimes a situation arises where a dog may approach you in an unfriendly or threatening way. Below is some advice to help you keep yourself and your dog safe. Keep your dog on a leash If your dog is not used to walking on a leash or seeing other people and dogs, it is a good idea to do some training to help them to be calm in these situations. A short leash is best as it helps you to socially distance from others, avoids your dog getting too close to other dogs and people, it minimises risks of entanglement and also facilitates a quick retreat in case you are approached by a roaming or unfriendly dog or a person you want to avoid. Make sure that you have trained your dog to have good recall You want to ensure that your dog will return to you in case you drop the leash, or they get away from you. Look ahead and survey the path you are taking It is important to be respectful of others and recognise that people may be particularly concerned about dogs getting too close to them. If your dog tends to get excited or nervous about pedestrians, cars, cyclists or other dogs approaching, move to a place that avoids close encounters until they pass, i.e. cross the road. Alternatively, use your voice to

with RSPCA Knowledge Bank calm and ask your dog to sit until they pass. What signs should I look out for? It is important to know what clues to look for that indicate a dog might be anxious or uncomfortable, as feeling stressed or fearful can lead to aggressive behaviour. Clues can include licking their lips, ears backwards or flattened on the head, yawning, showing the whites of their eyes, turning their face away, trying to move or turn away, standing crouched or walking low to the ground, low or tucked tail, head held low and avoidance of eye contact, a tense body position, shrinking away, lunging towards you (often with a stiff tail, tense body position, ears forward and/or flat, direct eye contact). Signs that a dog is not just anxious or uncomfortable but likely to be aggressive include growling, snarling, snapping, baring teeth and lunging. A dog who is restrained on a leash has less choice to remove themselves from a situation which they find stressful. This may lead them to feel uncomfortable around other people and dogs. Consequently, it may make them more likely to behave aggressively to try and maintain their space and sense of security in a situation they find stressful.

Summer pruning fruit trees AS many of you know, winter is the time to do the main pruning of deciduous fruit trees. You may not have realised that you can also prune after fruiting in summer. Here are few reasons why it is beneficial. Fruit trees can put on an enormous amount of growth over the summer period which makes the trees more difficult to net and harvest. With the continuing fruit fly issue it is so important to be vigilant with both of these things. Trees will bounce back quickly from this summer prune as they are in active growth. Before you begin make sure your tools are clean and sharp. Tidy cuts make for much better healing.

Remember you can always take more off but once it’s gone it’s not coming back so just remove what is needed at this stage. Don’t leave the tree over stressed during the summer heat by pruning away half of the tree. Remove any suckers from the base of the tree. Suckers come from below the graft and may be caused by damage to the roots. These need to be kept in check and are much easier dealt with when they are small. Tidy up any damaged or broken branches. Summer storms can be responsible for quite a bit of this and it is better not to leave damage where pests and disease can get in. Prune any branches touching

the ground or growing inwards. Both of these reduce airflow in and around the tree. Shorten long branches, particularly those with long vertical growth. Reducing the canopy now makes for an easier winter prune as you won’t have so much unwanted growth and many small branches to deal with when the tree is dormant. Clean up any twigs and fruit that may have dropped and keep the area around the base of your fruit trees clear from grass and weeds. This is a good time to top up mulch if necessary and give your fruit trees a dose of Seasol to assist in their recovery. Enjoy the rain and carry on gardening.

Gapsted Wines Tobacco Road 2019 Pinot Noir THERE was a lot of talk late last year about El Nina and that we could expect a wetter than average summer but it kind of feels like the little girl was running late. The blistering, dry heat took its toll on quite a few plants in the garden and some even shed their leaves in a bid to keep cool. When the rain did finally come it certainly had a tropical feel about it and I’m hoping it might bode well for some late summer raspberries. The canes have powered up and are starting to flower and with any luck there are going to be enough berries to make jam. While the raspberries in the store look big and beautiful, they’re not a patch on the home grown when it comes to flavour, although my fruit would be too delicate to ever package and ship. Gapsted Wines Tobacco Road range is named to celebrate the history of the region and its transition from tobacco to grape growing. The Pinot Noir made from King Valley fruit has a light red colour and vibrant, spicy aroma with cherry and wild raspberry a little like how it smells when I

accidentally squish my own fruit. Having spent time in light French oak adds complexity to this deliciously balanced drop, with hints of vanilla and mace spice in the cherry, berry fruit, on the road to a clean, smooth finish. It’s good value and nice just to sip and enjoy, but would also be great with game like duck or ‘roo. Better late than never, Nina. PRICE A BOTTLE: About $15.

This Day in History, 1919 INFLUENZA scare in border areas. The border between Victoria and New South Wales had been closed with dramatic suddenness on January 30 and hundreds of New South Wales residents were reported to be trapped on the Victorian side of the border. At the time, the epidemic was raging in Melbourne and up to the closure of the border by New South Wales, there had been well over 1000 cases admitted to hospital and 73 deaths. An outbreak occurred at Barnawartha in February, with 10 cases. The outbreak hit Wangaratta badly, in spite of mass inoculations, and by April, 35 were in hospital and deaths were occurring from the disease.

Are you being heard? APPROXIMATELY one in six people in Australia experience hearing loss. If you work in a customer-facing job, there is a good chance some of the people you interact with on a daily basis are hard of hearing. Wearing hearing aids is only one part of the recipe for good communication. Those who are hard of hearing also rely on seeing facial expressions, knowing the context of conversation, and receiving a clear speech message. Unfortunately, during COVID-19, the addition of face masks, solid clear barriers and social distancing are having an impact on how well we are heard. However, there are several strate-

gies we can all adopt to help people most impacted by these measures. Face the person you are speaking with and ensure they can see your face and mouth clearly. Say the person’s name at the start of your conversation so the listener knows to pay attention. Increase the volume of your voice, but do not shout as this can distort sounds. Try repeating yourself using different words or phrasing if you are not being understood. Reduce the level of background noise where possible, for example, turn off music or the TV or move somewhere quieter to continue your conversation.

Ask the listener to repeat back important information such as times and dates so you know they have taken away the correct message. Alternatively, consider writing down important information. Most importantly: be patient. People who are hard of hearing still want to be part of the conversation and they want to hear what you have to say. Being told “it doesn’t matter” can make people feel dismissed and left out. You can discuss helpful communication strategies further with our friendly staff at Wangaratta Audiology on (03) 5722 4433.

Robots to stage battle royale Ŷ

Lachie, who was last month named the Rural City of Wangaratta’s Youth Citizen of the Year, developed his interest in robotics through the Galen Catholic College VEX group. Through the group, he had the chance to compete in national robotics competitions, and even to venture to Kentucky in the US to take part in the world championship. Now a mentor with the Wangaratta Robotics Club which kicked off last year, Lachie’s enjoying the chance to pass on the skills and knowledge he’s developed through VEX and his own robotics pursuits, as he also prepares to embark on a mechatronics course at Deakin University this year. He said the robotics club’s young members had been giv-

en the opportunity, including during a recent school holiday program, to build their own robots in the lead-up to the regional Battle Bots competition. Many are expected to take part in the event, with some working on customising their bots with 3D-printed features like spikes for some extra flair. “When the kids opened their kits and got their bots working for the first time, there was lots of excitement,” he said. “Most kids know the TV show, so they understand what it’s all about.” Lachie will also be competing in the regional event with his bot, nicknamed ‘Blizzard’ because of its white colouring and rotating blade. He built the bot from scratch in his 3D printer, and said Bliz-

zard came with a little extra personality attached; a wheel which often comes loose causes it to flip up on one wheel when its weapon is spinning quickly, which can give the impression of a victory dance if it comes at the end of a winning battle. Having taken part in other competitions, Lachie said he was looking forward to battling on home soil, and admitted the destruction element was one of the drawcards of the events. “The best part is when your bot still drives at the end of the battle,” he said. “In between battles, you have time for repairs, so you’re working against the clock to get them done so that you’re ready for the next one.”

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ COMPLEX: Each year we learn more about the science that surrounds our bodies, but there is still plenty of mysteries yet to be solved.

A deep dive into the human body IT’S hard not to be in awe of the sheer complexity of the human body, and life in general. This week, I thought we’d take a look at some interesting facts about the intricate parts that make up our bodies. Amazing appendix The appendix gets a bad press. It is usually treated as a body part that lost its function millions of years ago. All it seems to do is occasionally get infected and cause appendicitis. Yet recently it has been discovered that the appendix is very useful to the bacteria that help your digestive system function. They use it to get respite from the strain of the frenzied activity of the gut, somewhere to breed and help keep the

gut’s bacterial inhabitants topped up. So treat your appendix with respect. Supersized Molecules Practically everything we experience is made up of molecules. These vary in size from simple pairs of atoms, like an oxygen molecule, to complex organic structures. But the biggest molecule in nature resides in your body. It is chromosome 1. A normal human cell has 23 pairs of chromosomes in its nucleus, each a single, very long, molecule of DNA. Chromosome 1 is the biggest, containing around 10bn atoms, to pack in the amount of information that is encoded in the molecule. Fur loss

It might seem hard to believe, but we have about the same number of hairs on our bodies as a chimpanzee, it’s just that our hairs are so fine they are almost invisible. We aren’t sure quite why we lost our protective fur. It has been suggested that it may have been to help early humans sweat more easily, or to make life harder for parasites such as lice and ticks, or even because our ancestors were partly aquatic. But perhaps the most attractive idea is that early humans needed to co-operate more when they moved out of the trees into the savanna. When animals are bred for co-operation, as we once did with wolves to produce dogs, they become more like their infants.

Stardust Every atom in your body is billions of years old. Hydrogen, the most common element in the universe and a major feature of your body, was produced in the big bang 13.7bn years ago. Heavier atoms such as carbon and oxygen were forged in stars between 7bn and 12bn years ago, and blasted across space when the stars exploded. Some of these explosions were so powerful that they also produced the elements heavier than iron, which stars can’t construct. This means that the components of your body are truly ancient: you are stardust. Red blooded When you see blood oozing from a cut in your finger, you might assume that it is red be-

cause of the iron in it, rather as rust has a reddish hue. But the presence of the iron is a coincidence. The red colour arises because the iron is bound in a ring of atoms in haemoglobin called porphyrin and it’s the shape of this structure that produces the colour. Just how red your haemoglobin is depends on whether there is oxygen bound to it. When there is oxygen present, it changes the shape of the porphyrin, giving the red blood cells a more vivid shade. Going Viral Surprisingly, not all the useful DNA in your chromosomes comes from your evolutionary ancestors – some of it was borrowed from elsewhere. Your DNA includes the genes from at least

eight retroviruses. These are a kind of virus that makes use of the cell’s mechanisms for coding DNA to take over a cell. At some point in human history, these genes became incorporated into human DNA. A host for life Did you know that, if we’re talking about the sheer number of cells only, the human body is more comprised of as many bacteria cells as actual human cells? It was once commonly believed that bacteria outnumbered human cells by ten to one, but this is now considered inaccurate, and it is closer to say the ratio is one to one. Nonetheless, an entire universe of life goes about it’s business on and in your body every day.
