WHEN Laura Tonkin started planning in late 2014 for the introduction of parkrun to Wangaratta, she was following her heart both professionally and personally. Parkruns are free, weekly community events held across the world, offering an inclusive experience for people to walk, jog, run, volunteer or spectate. “I’d heard about parkrun and investigated what it was, and thought it would be good for Wangaratta,” she said. “I’d just started running, and as I work as a health promotion officer, I thought it would be brilliant for our community.

Cancer in animals UNFORTUNATELY, as with people, cancer is a relatively common finding in older animals. Generally, above eight years of age. Cancer is the development of abnormal cells in the body that replicate in an uncontrolled manner. Most often cancers present with a lump, although some are diffuse, and found in the blood or various organs and are often much harder to diagnose. All the tissues in the body have the potential to become cancerous and the symptoms seen will vary depending on location. The symptoms of cancer can be very varied and include masses on skin, vomiting and diarrhoea from intestinal tumours, blood in urine with bladder tumours, coughing with lung tumours, or are non-descript like weight loss or lethargy. To diagnose cancer your vet will perform a range of different tests. A biopsy of the cancerous tissue is often the most diagnostic test your vet will perform, it will not only diagnose a cancer but also determine which type of cancer is present. This is very important to determine the best course of treatment as well as the overall prognosis. Your vet will also often recommend
with Felix DeNatris, Wangaratta Veterinary Clinic running blood tests to look at various parameters in the blood that affect treatment and prognosis and will also perform chest radiographs to look for spread of the cancer. Treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Surgery will generally be recommended for any discrete masses as removing the tumour can often be curative. For more diffuse cancers such as lymphoma, chemotherapy is the treatment option of choice. Chemotherapy for animals differs from human chemotherapy. Generally, the chemotherapy agents are much less aggressive than human drugs, so pets will not loose their hair and nausea is short lived and mild. The goals of animal chemotherapy often don’t include curing the animal and more focus on improving their quality of life. If you are concerned about any lumps or any health issue with your pet book in for a consultation with your vet.

Wild weed walk
MULLEIN or Verbascum Thapsus (which sounds very Harry Potter) is a giant weed that can grow up to two metres in height when in flower. The bright yellow flowers grow at the top of a stalk above the low growing rosette of fuzzy felt-like leaves. Both the leaves and flowers can be used as herbal medicine, to make tincture and oil. Mullein loves disturbed soil and as such grows wild in ditches, roadsides and burnt out or logged areas.
You can image that it would love growing locally around Myrtleford and the Alpine areas. Each plant can produce around 175,000 seeds and these can remain dormant for hundreds of years. Once the soil is disturbed, they produce their striking yellow flowers. It is a weed, invasive and difficult to eradicate. Once you find a patch you will have medicine making ingredients potentially forever. Tea from the leaves can be used
to help with a dry spasmodic cough and infusions of the leaves can help regulate the bowels. Traditionally it was smoked to help with fever and cough. When soaked in vinegar or alcohol the saturated leaves can form a poultice to treat infected wounds. Making an oil, by infusing the flowers in olive oil and garlic creates a golden oil used for earaches. The oil, once warmed helps soothe the pain and has antiseptic, antibacterial and analgesic properties.

EVERY time the Olympics roll around, I love the way we all become armchair experts in sports that just a few weeks earlier we knew virtually nothing about. While we are all watching more television than we normally would, ratings are going through the roof and we have been transfixed by the gymnastics, equestrian and athletics. We’re calling the boxing bouts and holding our breaths as the weightlifters lock their arms, and this year there has also been the karate, skateboarding and surfing to get your head around. It’s great fun and learning something new is a much-needed distraction. *O DBTF ZPV SF JOUFSFTUFE 'J BOP QSPOPVODFE 'FF BI OPI is a white wine grape variety which is used widely in southern Italy where it basks in the hot and dry climate. This Day in History, 1912 ANOTHER death with a slightly unusual touch. Robert Fitzgerald Finnis worked as a billiard marker at the Bulls Head Hotel. He had been the lessee of the billiard room for 10 years. Two days after he died on this day in 1912, he was buried in the Wangaratta cemetery by a clergyman named Canon Cue. Fancy a billiard marker being buried by a Cue and a Canon at that - surely one for Ripley.
With Christos Miliankos, North East Naturopathic Group DO you suffer back pain? Neck pain? Sore muscles? Digestive problems? Hormonal problems or frequent colds? Then Bowen Therapy could be of great benefit. What is it and how does it work? Bowtech, the original Bowen Technique, is a gentle form of body work in which subtle moves performed over the muscles and connective tissue send messages deep into the body, retrieving cellular memory of a preferred, relaxed, balanced way of wellbeing. Results can be remarkable, even from the first session; often only a few sessions are needed to correct the presenting problem. There are frequent but very essential pauses throughout the session that allows the body time to respond and begin the healing process. The practitioner can target a specific problem or address the body as a whole. The technique addresses not only the musculoskeletal framework, but also the fascia, nerves and internal organs. ND QUEENSLA FRUIT FLY Y COMMUNIT UPDATE
Advice for home gardeners Queensland fruit fly (Qfly) captures in the Goulburn Murray Vally (GMV) regional trapping grid for July have reached a season low. This drop indicates the cold weather is impacting on the survival of fruit fly, however it is important to note that adult flies are still being trapped. The continued presence of adults is evidence that mature flies have found refuge in warm spots scattered around the landscape and are responding to traps on warm days. There are locations within the region where, at this time of year, Qfly will survive easily and may move around more freely and infest fruit. These areas are typically concentrated in urban

The Bowen Technique was developed in the 1950s by the late Tom Bowen from Geelong. Bowen became a celebrated therapist, regularly treating over 13,000 patients a year. In 1974, he invited Oswald Rentsch and his wife Elaine to study with him and document his procedures. Honouring their promise to Bowen, they began to teach the technique in 1986. Since then, over 40,000 therapists worldwide have undertaken Bowen training. locations within townships because of the higher overall temperatures present within built up areas where heat from the sun is passively absorbed by things such as roads and walls and then released in the evening. Heat is actively generated by household heating where homes are concentrated in urban areas. Qfly may be able move around in some locations and not in others, even if both areas are urban because temperatures are not even from town to town across the region. Refuge in heat sinks Urban areas can act as heat sinks during the winter and provide a refuge for fruit fly. Fruit flies are able to survive the winter in these areas in large numbers if not managed and will be the cause of next season’s fruit fly problems in home gardens, peri-urban properties and then commercial orchards. It is important that home gardeners remove unpicked ripe or ripening fruit in yards during August and September. Picking this fruit will reduce the number of fruit fly produced through egg-laying by Qfly that survive winter.

Laura passes baton after six year run Ŷ
From page 1
“There is no pressure, and you do it at your own pace in your own way; there is no requirement to finish at a certain time, and you can run, walk or even skip it if you like. “The social involvement is an important element - it’s a chance to get out and have a walk or run with your family and friends.” While Laura hoped others would also see its merits, she could scarcely have imagined the way the event would be embraced, the ‘family’ it would create, or that she would mark six years in the event director’s role. “Six years has gone so fast; I thought initially that I’d be event director for about 12 months and then hand it on,” she said. “Now, six years later, it is time for me to hand the role over to someone else.” Graeme Blanch stepped up as co-event director in January, and worked with Laura to learn the role before officially taking over on the event’s sixth birthday on June 20. He said Laura was “generous with her time, extremely efficient and has given a lot to the community by steering parkrun for six years.” “Wangaratta Parkrun was established with her energy and voluntary commitment,” he said. While a COVID-19 lockdown and flooding at Apex Park, where the 5km Saturday morning event begins and ends, has hit pause on parkrun in recent weeks, Laura said there remained a passion among locals to be involved. “Our last two birthdays have been marked in lockdown, but each time we’ve come out of lockdown, our numbers have

still been good,” she said. She plans to continue her own involvement as one of six run directors, while ensuring she can also follow the footy endeavours of sons Kyle (11) and Jack (9). Laura said it had been rewarding to watch the evolution of the event over its six years so far. “You see the new people
come along for the first time and they’re quite nervous, then they come back again, and many become regulars, and you see how excited the kids are; you become part of their journey,” she said. “People have developed some great friendships through parkrun. “Every year, our numbers have increased.

“They drop in winter, to around 60, but come September when winter sports have finished, they start to increase to 80 or 100 each week before our biggest month in February. “I enjoy the connections you make, and meeting people you may not have crossed paths with before. “It’s a nice little community,
and we always try to make everyone feel welcome. “The best thing is when people come up at the end of parkrun and say things like: ‘Thank you - these runs make a difference to me or my family’. “You don’t often get to see or hear when you have an impact on someone’s life, so it’s nice.”
From a health promotion standpoint, Laura encouraged anyone who had been considering trying parkrun to keep an eye on the Facebook page, and come along when events resume. “Anything you can do to improve your health and fitness physically and mentally, especially at the moment, is a great idea,” she said.
