‘Human spirit’ alive in a crisis
By NICK SINIS
AFTER enduring the dreaded COVID-19 ‘second wave’, St Catherine’s Hostel nurses Steve Voogt and Heila Brooks believe the human spirit is very much alive during a time of crisis. The nurses were sent to provide assistance to two aged care facilities in north and west Melbourne during the months of August and September throughout the second outbreak. Mr Voogt, who was stationed at a facility in the northern suburbs and works as a nurse practitioner for St Catherine’sin Wangaratta, said the situation was confronting when he arrived, as the centre had already more than 30 cases of COVID at the time. “The experience was something that I have never experienced before in my life,” he said. “I was basically coordinating the care, then my role became clinical and I was coordinating the care for the staff.

YOUR GARDEN
Grass seeds and pets IN rural veterinary practices at this time of the year, veterinarians are inundated with cases involving grass seeds. The majority of cases occur in dogs although long haired cats may occasionally be affected. By their very nature grass seeds have evolved to attach to passing animals to be redistributed somewhere else and their barbed and hooked structure makes them very difficult for an animal to shift once attached. The most common places grass seeds lodge is in the interdigital spaces (between the toes) and in the ears. In long haired dogs they penetrate the skin under the belly and chest, although they can lodge in almost every conceivable place you could possibly imagine. Recently I was undertaking a routine spey (female desexing) on a young, immature dog and I noticed an abnormal inflammation in the top of one of the uterine horns. I asked my assisting nurse to investigate only to find a grass seed lodged at the upper most extremity of the uterus. Grass seeds can also be inhaled and lodge in the throat, tonsils, nose, trachea, lungs and may penetrate into the thorax. They can be swallowed and penetrate the oesophagus or gastrointestinal tract. They can get into eyes and cause
with Andrew Colson, BVCs (hons), Ovens and Kiewa Veterinary Hospital severe damage to corneas, they can penetrate the oral mucosa and form abscesses under the tongue or even behind the eye. Some of these cases become very difficult to resolve. To avoid grass seed penetration, dogs especially long haired breeds should be restricted from access to long grass with mature seed heads. Dogs’ coats including feet should be checked/groomed on a daily basis. Grass seeds will often sit half embedded in the skin and are easily removed before they fully penetrate at which time they need to be surgically removed. Annual full body clipping of long hair dogs is also beneficial if restriction is not practicable. Common clinical signs of grass seed penetration include; persistent licking of an area, painful swelling, shaking of the head with a possible accompanying head tilt and sinuses discharging pus. If any of the signs are noted immediate veterinary attention may avert more severe consequences following a simple grass seed penetration.

Give a kangaroo a paw
ORIGINALLY native to southwest Western Australia, these beautiful and distinctive flowers can now be found all over the country and they’re a favourite with many gardeners and landscapers. The kangaroo paw gets its name from its flowers, which are often red in colour, feel furry, and are shaped just like a kangaroo’s paw. The nectar in the long and tubular flowers are an important highenergy food source for many birds, mammals and insects. The kangaroo paw relies on animals to help with pollination. When a long-tongued marsupial like the small, dainty Honey Possum or a thin-beaked bird like the Tawny-crowned Honeyeater
comes along to feed on the paw’s nectar, its long, thin anthers cover the animal with pollen. These messy eaters then head off to another plant, taking the pollen with them. The flowers of the kangaroo paw don’t have any scent, and can be red and green, hot pink, bright yellow or even black. Kangaroo paws not only have lots of different coloured flowers, they also have very different sizes ranging from a 2m high to a tiny 30 cm. They love growing in rocky, dry places with lots of sun and pollinators to help them out. The leaves of the kangaroo paw grow in a similar way to grass, from underground roots or rhizomes,
straight up out of the soil. This is a very useful adaptation when actual kangaroos come along and eat the leaves right down to the ground or when a bush fire burns their leaves off. Their root system means kangaroo paws can survive these events and start growing again even after their leaves have been damaged. These are a stunning sight in the bush but also have a look around in your local parks and gardens and you’re sure to come across a brilliant, furry splash of colour. In the garden you can cut them back after flowering to simulate the effects of a bushfire. This allows the kangaroo paw to grow back healthy new shoots.

Wood Park Wines
Wild’s Gully 2019 Sauvignon Blanc THE citrus are flowering at the moment and even the youngest plants are thick with lush green, shiny foliage and covered in white blossoms. The smell is incredible and particularly heady in the early evening when it floats on the breeze. Chemists might spend hours in the laboratory coming up with new scents, but the ones Mother Nature gives us are definitely among the most alluring and captivating. No wonder the bees and other insects are having such a wonderful time. One of the wine varieties I always make room for is Sauvignon Blanc because it makes for perfect drinking in the warmer weather with its mix of fruity aroma and flavour. Wood Park Wines Wild’s Gully Alpine Valleys Sauvignon Blanc doesn’t disappoint with its vibrant aroma of white florals and tropical fruit. It smells like summertime. The flavours also hint at the tropical, but then lean more towards gooseberry, with a fresh, mineral feel and the lemony zest of citrus on the way to a dry finish. Enjoy lightly chilled and you’ll find there is more to discover
with Anita McPherson
with Naturopath Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) with quite a surprising length of flavour. It’s great to have when you put your feet up, but is also ideal on the table with a summer menu that might include chicken kebabs, pan-fried fish or a vegetarian quiche. Bring on those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer.
Available from the cellar door in Milawa or go to www.woodparkwines.com.au | About $20 a bottle.

◆ BUNDLE OF JOY: A collaborative approach to fertility and health can be of great benefit.
Creating a fertility health team FERTILITY and pregnancy support is an area of healthcare that the North East Natural Health Centre naturopaths have a great amount of knowledge in. Whether you are trying to conceive, or have recently found out you are pregnant, there can be a lot of information to navigate and digest. We have found that a collaborative approach works best. Ideally your whole team will be open to communication in all aspect of your fertility and pregnancy wellbeing. This ensures everyone is informed about what is going on and has the relevant information to provide you with the best possible care.
Good complementary health practitioners will write to your GP and/ or specialist or midwife (with your permission) to keep them informed about treatment. In an ideal world we would recommend getting a team in place a minimum of four months before trying to conceive. That way you will have support to inspire you to prepare your health and your body for conception and pregnancy. In the real world just start when you can, wherever you are on your conception path. If you haven’t already, start now. A good supportive team with varying points of view can help ensure that potential problems are identified
and treated, and nothing gets missed. This is true holistic health care. North East Natural Health Centre naturopaths have spent many years building collaborative networks to benefit our patients. We work in local collaboration with all kinds of health professionals that support the path to fertility and through pregnancy. We have the support of local GP’s, Midwives, counselors, physiotherapists and chiropractors, massage and myotherapists, acupuncturists and are working in conjunction with fertility specialists. We hope this approach is one that gives you the best outcomes for you and your baby.

“The permanent staff were either off with COVID or isolating, so we actually had staff placed with mostly nurses from the Epworth Hospital and the Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH). “So it was very, very difficult because we didn’t know any of the residents, we didn’t know where any of the equipment was and there was no communication with the staff.” Mr Voogt said workers, including himsefl, often had to endure long 14 hour days without breaks or days off. “We’re trying to care for the residents with all those issues and the barriers, it was very difficult circumstances with very sick residents,” he said. “The fact we all had to have full PPE as well and worrying about getting COVID yourself.
“The RMH and Epworth Hospital nurses were very good, they were all young nurses that had no aged care experience and volunteered, they were excellent. “I think those nurses had pulled the weight of the crisis in Melbourne. “It bought out the best in the human spirit, I really saw that in the nurses and I think that’s what really got us through.” Ms Brooks, who works as a care manager for St Catherine’s and was sent to the western suburbs, said although the experience had been demanding, there were many positives to take away. “I went down as a nurse advisor and half of the residents were COVID positive and half of the staff was either positive or isolating,” she said. “We had residents that were positive but most of them weren’t
symptomatic, it just affects people in such different ways but those who do get sick, get very sick. “But I thoroughly enjoyed it. “I feel extremely confident now with staff management in an outbreak situation, with Steve and I, we would be in good stead to manage if anything happened up here.” Ms Brooks said the experience also put into perspective the tragic impact restrictions have had on elderly residents in aged care. “Some of the residents had been in their rooms for four months,” she said. “The impact it has on them with no visitors, no family, no activities or anything because the infection controls measures was so tight. “That’s taken its toll on families and residents...there is a psychological impact.”

GONE FISHING

TECH & SCIENCE
◆ WHAT A BEAUTY: Cliff Karnatz with a 62cm yellowbelly caught trolling a McGrath wide body lure in Eucumbene spawning colour at Lake Hume last week.
Yellowbelly still fishing well at lakes Nillahcootie, Hume OVER the last few weeks I have written a lot about the great fishing at Lake Nillahcootie. Well, Nillahcootie continues to fish very well however this week I want to focus my attention on Lake Hume. Lake Hume is known for it’s trophy sized yellowbelly, and over the last few weeks I have seen photos of some absolute monstrous sized yellowbelly being caught. The biggest yellowbelly that I have seen a photo of was 66.5cm, which could possibly equate to around 12-15lb of fat yellowbelly, give or take a little bit. Most yellowbelly have been caught on diving hard body lures and lipless crankbaits, with a few also caught on live bait such as worms and yabbies. Redfin have been a common and welcome by-catch to those chasing the trophy yellowbelly. Most redfin have been small but a few nice ones have been caught. Lake Eildon has also been producing a few large yellowbelly, although I have not heard as many reports from there as I have Lake Hume. This could be attributed to the fact that Lake Eildon is popular

Tech addiction during COVID-19 with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA with Melbourne anglers and they have not been able to fish Eildon for months. On the weekend I went bait fishing with Brett Corker in the lower Ovens River. We managed to catch several small Murray cod (all released) and large carp just using worms for bait. Brett did catch one of his cod on a Lipless crankbait lure. He was not targeting Murray cod as the season is closed. He was actually targeting his fishing rod that had been pulled in by a fish 15 minutes earlier, never to be seen again. He was trying to hook his lost fishing rod with the lure, when the cod hit the lure. Now there’s a fishing story of the rod that got away!
WHEN do you last check Facebook? I bet something extremely important has happened on Facebook that you haven’t seen yet. I bet your friend just posted about burning her toast while her toddler threw a tantrum and it’s officially the worst day ever. You’d better get on Facebook and leave a sympathetic comment coupled with some sort of situation-appropriate emoji. Like a sad face, or a hug, or a love heart. Are you starting to get the urge to check Facebook? If you have, there’s a chance you might be a techno-addict. Technology addiction, a relatively new issue, isn’t always easy to recognise due to the fact that so many of us must be attached to our phones or computers for legitimate reasons such as work or school. And the situation being what it is right now, getting away from the screen is even harder now, or perhaps not possible at all. And in Australia we have a particular penchant for all things technology, with
a whopping 13.4 million people out of a total population of 25 million spending 18.8 hours online every week. Even more surprising is the fact that Australia is responsible for 9.8 million unique visits to Facebook each week, which is more than the U.S. and Britain according to The Cabin, Sydney, a specialist addiction treatment centre. Compounding the time-sink that is technology use, the way internet use relates to our psychological makeup means that the onslaught of informational snippets can be exhausting for the mind, leading to burnout, anxiety and sleep disorders. Of particular concern is the effect over-use of technology has on teenagers and young adults. A study by Dr Mubarak Ali of Flinders University in Adelaide on the impact that internet use has had on Australian teenagers found that one-third of the study participants were “in the process of becoming psychologically addicted,” and teenagers, on average, spent 13 hours per week online. Driving this addiction is what is known as FOM (A fear of missing out), a condition in which the sufferer fears

that their peers will have fun without them if they don’t keep up with online social circles. Much like other types of dependance, technology addiction involves the neurochemical dopamine which is related to reward motivated behaviour. And, just like most other addictions, the ‘rush’ of dopamine typically requires greater lengths of time on the internet in order to achieve the same nice feeling until it becomes compulsive, habitual behaviour. People who are addicted to the internet display the same tell-tale signs as those who are addicted to drugs or alcohol.
