◆ WINNERS ARE GRINNERS: Pulsate Dance Force owner Samantha Pulvirenti (right) and her Wangaratta dancers are ecstatic to have won the major prize from Haymes Paint Wangaratta. PHOTO: Belinda Harrison

Dancing with a new coat By BELINDA HARRISON THE winners of the Haymes Paint Shop’s Helping Hand Project were announced in April with Pulsate Dance Force in Wangaratta winning the major prize of interior and exterior paint along with volunteer tradesmen to carry out the revamp. locale and voted on by the community. Owner and director of Pulsate Dance Force, Samantha Pulvirenti, said that the strict restrictions placed on the arts industry during COVID meant that all plans to improve and update the studio were put on hold. “Re-painting the studio has been on our ‘to do list’ for a long time but when COVID hit, it suddenly wasn’t a priority - I was more concerned in being able to keep the studio alive for all the chil-

dren to have a dance home they could come back to,” she said. “Winning this prize means that our studio can get a new fresh look and allows us to concentrate on other important projects for the children.” As the only major Australian made and owned paint manufacturer Haymes Paint wanted to offer a positive and lasting impact on local communities after such a tough year in 2020.

“Someone mentioned the competition to me and suggested we apply,” Samantha said. “I definitely didn’t think this would be attainable for our small business, but I’m so glad now that I did apply. “To be voted as a worthy recipient is humbling, as is knowing that our local community and dance family are right behind us and want to see us succeed.” Annie Heetel of Haymes Paint Shop Wangaratta said they were very proud

to be able to give not just paint but excitement to the winner for a fresh start and new look in 2021. “We were very excited that our Haymes paint shop was able to run a competition supporting the local community and businesses who had such a tough 2020 with being forced to close for periods of time and operate on smaller scale at other times,” Annie said.

Kennel cough KENNEL cough is an extremely contagious respiratory disease of dogs that can strike any breed at any age. There are 11 viruses and bacteria which contribute to the disease and depending on which germs infect your dog, their coughing can vary in severity. The three main culprits that will cause the worst infection are canine adenovirus 2, canine parainfluenza virus and a bacterium called bordatella bronchiseptica. Luckily, your dog’s yearly booster shot protects against these big three, drastically lowering the chance of them getting kennel cough and if they do, it will reduce the severity of the disease. Your dog might have kennel cough if you observe a dry hacking cough after they exercise, get excited, or are pulling on the lead. Rarely, this can lead to lung infection and damage, but in young puppies this outcome is much more common. If your pooch presents with these signs then its important to seek a vet for diagnosis because if they have

with Ovens & Kiewa Veterinary Hospital kennel cough they will have to quarantine for two weeks (think Melbourne lockdown) and they may need antibiotics or anti-tussive medications. If they do have kennel cough then for the next two weeks they should not interact with other dogs, or go to dog parks even if there are no other dogs there. This is because kennel cough is so contagious, that if another dog sniffs an area where an infected dog has urinated, defecated or slobbered on recently that dog can get kennel cough too. The best way to avoid kennel cough and reduce its severity is to keep up to date with their yearly vaccinations, deworm them regularly, provide good nutrition and limit stress. Keep your canine companion happy and healthy with yearly vaccinations and always consult your vet if you think something is wrong.

Eremophilas - part 3

EMU bushes (eremophilas) are a large genus of Australian plants which naturally occur predominantly in arid regions. Ranging from ground-covers to small trees, this is a very useful and under-rated group of versatile plants. It would be entirely possible to design a beautiful and colourful garden using this genus alone. In times of changing climatic conditions, interest has grown in the genus. Most species are particularly suited to areas which experience drought and irregular rainfall. Many also flourish in gardens with more moderate climatic conditions. Because it is flowering prolifically in early May, I have chosen to focus on one of my favourites - Eremophila oppositifolia. E. oppositifolia can grow over ten years or so to form a large shrub or small tree (2-4m x 2.5 m). Plants are long-lived.

They prefer sandy or welldrained soils. E. oppositifolia is suitable as either a garden feature plant or as a larger pot plant. Plants grow readily from cuttings of firm fresh tip growth. For heavy soils, grafted plants are an option and are available from specialist nurseries. Myoporum insulare (common boobialla) or M. bateae are the usual rootstocks. Myoporum and eremophila are both members of the myoporaceae family. Plants can be pruned to form either a medium/large shrub or under-pruned to form a small tree. They should not be pruned below the lowest leaves. Although slow-growing, E. oppositifolia has also been used successfully as an informal hedge. Plants grow well in full sun or part-shade and cope with light frost. They recover from damage from

more severe frosts. There are three colour forms with either white, pink (pictured) or lilac flowers. The narrow tubular flowers usually appear from late winter to early summer but can have an additional flowering flush in dry areas following heavy rainfall. The floral calyxes are retained on the plant, extending the flowering display for some weeks. The photos above were taken in early May. This plant responded magnificently in response to a drenching in early autumn. E. oppositifolia is tough, and once established, does not require supplementary watering. The common name “Twin-Leaf Emu Bush” refers to the silver-grey narrow opposite leaves which give the plant a light feathery appearance. Plants pruned to tree-form cast light shade, allowing for understorey planting.

“There were almost 40 entries for the competition and each applicant had to give a response regarding why they were deserving of the paint. “We had some really, really good entries and it was difficult to narrow it down to just three for the community to decide who would be the ultimate winner.” King River Café in Oxley and the Lions Club Wangaratta were the runners’ up and will each receive paint to update their premises in the near future. “All of the winners were worthy applicants because of the support they give to our local community so I think they are really grateful to get something back and are also excited to see a physical change in the look of their business/group premises,” Annie said. Haymes painters will be on site in the July school holidays to carry out the work at Pulsate, ready for a fresh start for the students in term three. “I would personally like to thank Haymes and the team at

Haymes Wangaratta for running such a fantastic initiative for local businesses and groups, as well as our entire Pulsate Dance family and the local community who voted for us. “Knowing that we have so much support behind us means a lot to the staff and the students, and it’s this type of support that reassures me that we can continue through anything and ensure many more little dancers can walk through our doors for years to come,” Samantha added. “We would also like to acknowledge and thank the painters who are volunteering their time and expertise as part of the prize to Pulsate,” said Annie. “These include Leigh Barry Painting, Flair for Colour - Travis Harrison, Danny Patton Painting and Jodie Wells Painting,” As a thank you to the entire community, Pulsate is giving back and offering a free trial week between June 21 and 26 with local dancers able to experience the gift of dance with a free lesson.

Immune system unite THIS year more than ever, our health and immune system has never been more important. We are starting to see the emergence of common colds and flus and viruses creep back into our households, especially if you have kids at school, daycare or kinder. Our immune system has had a period of hibernation during 2020 but our nervous system has been revving at full whack. This is a perfect storm for immune dysfunction as our nervous system (stress, worry, anxiety, physical aches and pains/diseases or emotional worries) can deplete our immune system and restrict it from being the awesome

super fighting army it can be. There are many things you can do to help you survive this winter without missing too many days of work. 1) See us to assess what may be impacting on your immune system from working optimally - is it stress, gut health, nutritional deficiency? 2) Have a plan in place to support your body if you do become unwell - a specific supplementation tailor made for your circumstance, a diet plan, rest - anything that you can implement at the first sign of a cold to reduce the frequency and severity of it. 3) Check your bloods - vitamin D, iron or thyroid just to name a few - we can do this for you.

4) Rest: get quality sleep, spend your energy wisely and don’t overcommit. 5) Eat your medicine, not only when you are unwell - include garlic, turmeric, chili, fennel, oregano, thyme, rosemary, parsley, citrus, kiwi, bright coloured berries and medicinal mushrooms such as shitake and reishi. If you need help improving your immune or nervous system or you just want them to get along better then we are the ladies for you. We love putting together simple and effective plans for you and your family that not only prevent the severity of an illness but leave you feeling more robust after an illness.

GONE FISHING

◆ ON THE BITE: A typical small Waranga Basin redfin caught on a soft plastic last Friday.

Monster Murray cod, but not for everyone THE number of monster Murray cod photos that are turning up from Lake Mulwala at the moment is truly mind blowing. My social media newsfeeds are awash with huge cod photos. One bloke even caught two cod over 100cm in length on the same evening. We do need to understand that social media is the master of misrepresentation though. It shows us all of these huge cod, but does not show us the thousands of casts in between catching these green giants. Nor does it show us photos of the anglers that have missed out completely, of which there are plenty. Lake Mulwala is definitely the place to be at the moment if you want to catch a monster Murray cod, but you will need to be prepared to make a lot of casts in between fish, and just because many people are catching them it does not mean that you will. Many of these big fish are being caught on very large swim baits and surface lures. The redfin are still on the bite in a lot of places.

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA I fished Waranga Basin last Friday afternoon and caught a heap of redfin from the bank. I caught around 15 or more fish casting a soft plastic in the afternoon, and then on sunset I went bait fishing and caught two small redfin and one carp using worms as bait in front of a spectacular sunset. The lure that caught my redfin was a Strike Tiger 1.5” curl tail grub in “Banana shock” colour. Waranga Basin is very low at the moment, and the Harriman Point boat ramp is completely out of the water, but it is fishing very well. I fished Lake Buffalo with my dad on the weekend where we caught a decent feed of redfin and Lake Hume also still continues to produce huge numbers of redfin for many anglers.

The biggest risk of all is doing nothing MANAGEMENT of the combined effect of natural disasters, changing climatic conditions and market volatility are critical aspects of rural enterprises. While these events are bound to have an impact, it could just as easily be a drop in cash flow, illness or other changing personal circumstances that create business upheaval. As always, timing and planning are important elements in recovery and adaption as we respond to altered and diverse conditions and prepare for the future in different ways. This may be the ideal time to use the free of charge and confidential services provided by AgBiz Assist, thanks to the support of state and federal funding. Business viability forms the major fo-

with Roberta Horne, AGBIZ ASSIST cus of the work our rural financial counsellors undertake as they assist with the development of risk management strategies that cater for the ongoing needs of farming enterprises. The first step is a review the farming operation to make sure it aligns with the goals and aspirations of the proprietor. Assistance is offered with investi-

gating various business options including cost/benefit outcomes and associated risks. Then, by providing a sounding board in the discussions about suitable options, all parties can be confident the necessary capacity and capability is available to achieve a positive outcome. Effective planning and follow-up on the implementation of the chosen option diminishes the uncertainty and urgency around preparing for changing business and climatic environments. When you are ready, call us on 1300 834 775 to arrange a one-on-one, no cost telephone or virtual appointment at a time to suit you to discuss your specific business continuity needs.
