Devoted mum, SES member and chart topping musician By NICK SINIS

A CLOSE friend once told Chloe Jade “you’ll never need a psychologist as long as you’ve got music in your life”, which she believes rings so true in her case. The talented Wangaratta singer/songwriter and mother of one began her music career amid a year of challenges caused by the COVID pandemic, but has since achieved a chart topping single through Alburybased radio station Atomic Music. The music platform supports independent and rural artists throughout Australia by helping them gain exposure through their FM radio channel or via streaming. The singer’s life has always been surrounded by music since and she grew up listening to the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and Cat Stevens. “I had such a big interest in music, I was always singing at my dressing table and making improvised instruments,” she said. “It wasn’t until I was much older I got my proper start when I was 15 and I was able to buy a violin. “That’s when things really took off for me, I studied classical and became involved in different ensembles. “I got a guitar as well and that’s when I really started writing songs.”

Southern Brown Tree Frogs THE tiny Southern Brown Tree Frogs are common guests to suburban gardens in Victoria. Look and listen out for these frogs calling from under logs, in low growing plants, amongst leaf litter and near waterways. They only grow to 4.5cm in length and being tree frogs, they are great climbers and jumpers. Unlike most frogs, they can live away from water in drier areas. Southern Brown Tree Frogs are bugeating ninjas that can leap and catch insects in mid-flight. They feed on mosquitoes, flies, and moths. You may see this frog attached to your window pane at night, hunting for flying insects that are drawn to your lights. Not all of these frogs are brown. Despite being called Southern Brown Tree Frogs, they can come in a variety of different colours, including orange, pale fawn or cream and sometimes even green. They have a wide brown band that starts from between their eyes and runs down their back. They have a white or pale yellow belly and mating males often have a light brown vocal sac. The peak period for mating is late winter to early spring. When they’re ready to mate these

frogs congregate at ponds, creeks, waterholes, farm dams and waterways. Males call out ‘Creeeeeeee creee creee creee creee’, especially after heavy rain. The first ‘cree’ is the longest and four to 14 quick ‘crees’ follow it. When a female hears a call she likes, she will enter the still, shallow water with her mate. She lays up to 700 eggs in jelly clumps of about 10-15 eggs and attaches these to underwater grasses, sticks and plants growing near the water’s surface so they don’t flow away. Four to six days later, the eggs hatch into tadpoles which grow from 2cm to 4.5 cm in length. These tadpoles are a pale goldenyellow to dark grey-colour with clear looking fins. They are fast swimmers and will dash away when disturbed. Avoid taking tadpoles you find outdoors or handling wild frogs. By doing so you could be spreading Amphibian Chytrid Fungus between different frogs. This disease makes frogs sick and leads to declines in frog populations.

◆ BRILLIANT COLOUR: Sunflowers are a joy to grow and provide life in the garden during the hot summer months, they are also beloved by bees. PHOTO: Nicole Jeffs

A bright and sunny outlook SUNFLOWERS (Helianthus annuus cv) are a joy to grow and are well-suited to our climate when planted in full-sun and protected from strong winds. Most sunflowers are yellow, although there are red, orange and striped varieties available and some varieties offer double blooms. You can plant your seeds or seedlings together for a ‘sunflower patch’ or spread them around your garden. If you intend to have a patch, space the seeds or seedlings 50cm to 60cm apart and 2cm deep so they have room to for each head to grow as well as spreading their roots underground. They will need watering every day until they are about 20cm to 30cm tall. Sunflowers grow well in fertile, well-drained soil although they are quite hardy so will grow in most soils. Provided that they receive six to eight hours of sunlight a day, you should have no trouble producing an eye-catching display. You may notice that while your

sunflowers are growing, they move their heads around to follow the sun. This happens until the flower opens up when it will then remain facing one direction - usually the north-east - so if you can, plant your sunflowers on the western side of your garden so you get to see their sunny faces, rather than your neighbours. Regular weeding around your plants will help them emerge strongly as there will be little competition for their nutrition and water requirements. A thin layer of organic mulch can also deter weed growth and help retain soil moisture. The best time to plant sunflower seeds is in spring as they take about 12 weeks to bloom after sowing so the height of summer and into early March should see your garden bursting to life when so much else is suffering. The taller growing varieties (those more than two metres high) are best grown in the ground and staked to keep their stem intact, but you can

Beechworth Bakery Beechworth, Bright & Yackandandah

buy dwarf forms which only grow 50cm high and are great for pots. Bees are attracted to sunflowers and you may find a half a dozen to a dozen all enjoying the flowerettes that make up the flower head. A couple of interesting facts about the flowerettes which make up sunflowers is that they are always in a spiral pattern that follows the Fibonacci sequence. The sunflower head is highly complex and highly fascinating, made up of hundreds or sometimes thousands of flowerettes, which each form an individual seed. You can harvest the seeds at the end of the flowering season and use them to plant the following year. Gardeners often have an idea of what can and can’t be planted together - known as good or bad companions. For sunflowers, good planting companions include cucumbers, melons, sweetcorn and squash. Bad companions like potatoes and beans should be avoided due to the toxins they can give off.

Michelini Wines 2018 Sauvignon Blanc IF there was ever a New Year to make resolutions than it would be this one. After all we’ve experienced in 2020 we have hopefully learnt some big lessons - the main one being not to take all the good things we have in our lives for granted. No doubt there will also be many who found their routines out of whack having exercised less and indulged more than they usually do - and I’ve had quite a few people tell me they were carrying a few extra COVID kilos. The good news is that in the summer heat you feel more inclined to eat lighter and that means fresh salads, fruits, white meats and seafood tend to find their way onto the menu. And to compliment those it’s hard to beat the freshness of a Sauvignon Blanc. Michelini Wines Sauvignon Blanc has a lightly, floral and tropical fruit aroma which is immediately inviting and uplifting. It also has a herbaceous quality so while there is melon and fig-like fruit in the flavour, there is also a hint of spice which makes it work really well with a

wide range of foods. Add to that some lime fruit, which makes this wine particularly zesty when well chilled. And more chilled is how I resolve to be next year - accepting that there are things in life which are ultimately out of our control. It’s time to start the year fresh, and what better way to do that than with local Sauvignon Blanc.

Visit the cellar door in Myrtleford or find out more at www.micheliniwines.com.au. About $20.

This Day in History, 1881 PERHAPS it was the date, but the 13th has been a bad day for fires. A fire in Wangaratta, a fire in Violet Town in 1894 and Black Friday in 1939. On the corner of Murphy and Reid streets in Wangaratta, where the Commonwealth Bank stands today, McKeone’s Store stood, with a jewellers shop next door. On this day in 1881, fire swept through the two-storied building at the corner, and damaged the adjoining jewellers shop. Wangaratta’s fire brigade turned out, but was hampered by lack of water.

ND QUEENSLA FRUIT FLY Y COMMUNIT UPDATE

New season populations

Queensland Fruit Fly (Qfly) numbers increased in urban areas throughout the region in December 2020, representing the start of the new season’s fruit fl y population. If not controlled, these populations will explode to large numbers causing significant damage to fruit across the Goulburn Murray Valley (GMV) from February to April 2021. Higher levels of rainfall, along with increased humidity and fruit set, as a result of the La Niña weather pattern occurring across much of SouthEastern Australia, provides favourable conditions for further population expansion. Fruit fly hot spots

data as Qfly hot spots: (XURD .\DEUDP 0RRURRSQD 1DJDPELH 1XPXUNDK 6KHSSDUWRQ These sites cover a large part of the GMV region and if not managed efficiently, hot spots will spread from these sites into the rest of the region immediately surrounding them. New generations will emerge from these fl ies and spread in a ripple effect further out into commercial crops nearby in autumn – when most commercial crops in the region ripen. Urban control essential

The following urban areas have been identified through trapping

The majority of the Qfly trapped in the last four months of 2020 were found in urban locations. These urban fruit fl ies, if not controlled sufficiently, will expand over the next two generations and spread into commercial orchards in late summer and autumn. The efforts of home gardeners to control Qfl y now in the summer of 2021, will be of immense use to commercial growers and the entire community in autumn 2021. Community-wide monitoring and protection against Qfly will allow home garden producers to enjoy the benefits of fewer fruit fly destroying

What’s changed with today’s hearing aids? OVER the years, we have come to expect that technological developments will occur in many fields and this is certainly true of hearing aids. A century ago, the size and lack of benefit of hearing devices such as ear trumpets might have been the usual complaints. Although the ear trumpets might look great in our collection of antique hearing aids, they did not provide real benefit to the user. Let’s by-pass the development of the first electronic hearing aids, vacuum tube and then transistor technology, and more recently digital hearing aids. Today, advertisements of “digital hearing aids” still occur, but the fully digital hearing aid has been around for about 25 years so this is no longer special. What’s happened since then? Most recently, the two major advances have been Bluetooth connectivity and rechargeability. The advent of Bluetooth to provide a clearer sound of a mobile phone or tel-

evision directly in the ears has been a game-changer for many of our clients. Likewise, for people with dexterity problems, no longer needing to worry about changing batteries has been really helpful. Using rechargeable hearing aids may also be important for people who are environmentally conscious. Probably the most obvious change to the appearance of hearing aids is the impact of miniaturisation, allowing the aids to be smaller. The “look” of the hearing aid has also been affected by improvements in the shape of the aids as well as the availability of different colours. Water and dust resistance have improved with the use of nanotechnology to provide a barrier between the outside world and the delicate components inside. Hearing aids should not squeal when correctly inserted into the ear. Improvements in feedback cancellation, which reduces the likelihood of squealing feedback in most situations,

has led to open-fit hearing aids. These aids are very helpful for people who have a mild-to-moderate hearing loss. Our clients are also happy to experience a reduction in occlusion (hearing their own voice in the ears when the canals are blocked) with the open-fit hearing aids. Our clients are often surprised that their hearing aids provide helpful information about how long they have been worn, whether the volume has been changed and the time spent in each of many different listening environments. This is called datalogging, and is particularly helpful in guiding your audiologist to make changes which may help you to hear better. Interestingly, the majority of these developments in hearing aids are available in all models of aids, from the least to the most expensive. If you would like to learn more about how modern hearing aids can help you enjoy communication again, please call Wangaratta Audiology on 5722 4433.

After living most of her early life in Wangaratta, Chloe moved to Melbourne to further her music studies, creating connections and becoming exposed to other genres and styles. “That was a big adventure, I studied contemporary jazz so it was a big change from the classical I had been doing,” she said. “I played in a few different bands and met some great people and now I’m working with a producer that I met when studying together. “When I came back to Wangaratta I got a scholarship and my plan was to go back to Melbourne but plans don’t seem to happen like that.” Chloe would eventually meet her “other half” and the couple would have their first child together. “I took a big break with my son (Bailey) being so young and I wanted to de-

vote all my time to him,” she said. “Now that he’s a bit older I decided I would get back into it. “I was looking for bands (this year) to play with and I found a little rockabilly band, so I started singing with them. “But I kind of had to come to a decision, would I put everything into this band? “It was lovely and I had a lot of fun but it doesn’t satisfy me like when I’m writing my own material.” Through the support of other local musicians, Chloe found the courage to branch out on her own and released her first single “In My Room” in late 2020. “I’ve really been pushing my music and putting a bit more faith in it,” she said. “I wrote (In My Room) a little while ago, I recorded it as a demo and then I was going to re-record it but I decided to work with it as is and just release it.

“It seemed pretty fitting for 2020. “Music has been my whole life. “it’s something that I can always turn to and it’s helped me through a lot of different challenges.” “In My Room” has since been number one on Atomic’s music chart for almost a month and Chloe used funds raised from it to go towards a children’s cancer charity. “It was a little bit surreal but now I just can’t wait to keep going with it all and I’m really looking forward to the songs that I’ve got coming up,” she said. “But at the centre of it all is my son; he’s been a big inspiration for a lot of different things. “Being a mum is one of the biggest adventures I’ve had and I’ve actually recently written a song inspired by him.” Chloe’s music can be found at www. facebook.com/chloejadesweetmelodies/.

GONE FISHING

TECH & SCIENCE

◆ MUD MONSTER: Jack Tiver from Melbourne caught this massive carp in the Tea Garden Creek while visiting his family over the Christmas break. The fish was 76cm long. Jack’s tape measure was 64cm long. He had to measure it, mark it and measure it again. What kind of an optimistic fisherman carries a 64cm tape measure around?

Redfin on the bite I HOPE everyone had a safe and happy Christmas and New Year period. It’s always easy to write my first fishing report back because I have had reports coming in from left right and centre. First and foremost, the redfin have been going crazy in Lake Hume. Some locals are saying that they have not seen redfin fishing like it in many years. Throughout the lake, from Tallangatta to Talgarno, anglers have been catching redfin in huge numbers. Catches of more than 100 redfin have been quite common. As a rule of thumb, bank fishermen have been catching the smallest redfin while those with boats and kayaks that can get out and fish in eight to 12 meters of water seem to be catching the biggest fish. Everything has been working yabbies, worms and lures. My father and I ventured to Lake Nillahcootie recently where we found that the fishing was still really good. We managed to catch over a dozen fish, mostly yellowbelly, but also a few Murray cod. Most of the yellowbelly were

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ LIKE AN ONION: Our planet is comprised of several layers - the extremely dense inner core, the most liquid outer core, the mantle, which tectonic plates slide across, and the crust, which is the part we live on.

Journey to the centre of the Earth with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA small however. We caught four legal fish with the biggest being 46cm which was caught on a lipless crankbait lure. The Murray cod fishing has been a bit hit and miss in the Ovens River. Some people are reporting excellent fish and some are saying it has been slow. I have personally experienced both, from catching six to seven cod in an evening to catching nothing two nights later using the same bait (cheese and worms) and only a little bit upstream. By all reports the Goulburn River around Shepparton has been fishing very good for Murray cod with many of the cod landed being quite big fish. There have been some real monsters caught there lately on both surface and sub-surface lures.

THE center of the Earth is probably one of the most mysterious places on our planet because we cannot physically go there. There is a lot of information about the Earth’s core, and numerous scientific documentaries have been made surrounding the concept. Even though we do have a lot of information about the core that is easily accessible on the Internet, there is still so much to be learned about this hot and hard-to-reach place. The Core of the Earth When we imagine the layers of Earth, the core is the smallest and innermost part. This can lead to some misconceptions that the Earth’s core is actually small. In fact, the Earth’s core is almost the size of the Moon. It is about 2,440 kilometers across. It also makes up 19 percent of Earth’s total volume. If the core of the Earth is almost as large as the Moon, it really makes us think just how giant our planet is. It also makes sense that the core is so large because it is responsible for so much that happens on our planet. The speed of the spin We all know that the Earth is always rotating. Interestingly, there is evidence that the core spins faster than the other layers of the planet. In 1997, Columbia University collected experimental evidence about the speed of the inner part of the planet. Researchers learned that the core rotates the same way as the rest of Earth but at a different speed. They found that the inner part of the planet makes a full rotation two-thirds of a second faster than the other layers of the Earth.

NORTONS PLUMBING

Now, two-thirds of a second is not that big of a deal, but it is so insane to think that the whole planet rotates at the same speed except for this one layer. So why does this layer rotate at a faster speed? Researchers have many different theories. For example, this speed differential may occur because the core is the most condensed and innermost layer. This may also happen because the core is the only partliquid layer. Plate Tectonics And Continental Drift The theories of plate tectonics and continental drift are some of the most fascinating and insightful out there. They discuss how the continental plates are always moving and can form supercontinents like Pangaea. The volatile nature of the Earth’s core helps to prove these theories. The core is unstable because it is in liquid form and volatile elements are constantly mixing though. The mixture of these unstable components causes plate tectonics and continental drift to take place. Makeup Of The Core The core consists of many elements that act together to make it extremely hot. It is composed of two parts: the inner core and the outer core. The inner core is solid and made of iron (according to NASA). It is also the hottest part of our planet. The liquid outer core surrounds the inner core and is composed of a nickel-iron alloy. It is interesting to think that a layer of our planet is actually made of liquid.
