Agricultural love leads to sustainable farming and vineyard By CORAL COOKSLEY
A LOVE of agriculture from growing up in a winemaking family has led Lake Moodemere Estate’s vineyard and farm manager Joel Chambers on an incredible journey, seeing the 28-year-old earn sustainability certification for the vineyard - which is only one of 10 in Victoria. The seventh generation family member with a passion for improving and nurturing the land with sustainable farming and agriculture practices and sharing his knowledge with industry colleagues, said an interest in viticulture began with his late grandfather, Peter Chambers. “He taught me viticulture fundamentals,” Joel said. “I started working with him when I was about eight years old during school holiday and that’s why I went down a viticulture path for the first two years after leaving school where I worked in Yarra Valley vineyards. “It was a good eye opener and I learned a lot.”

Gold, rubies and snowbells $-*.#&34 DBO TPNFUJNFT CF problematic for gardeners who prefer tightly controlled conformity. If you prefer your garden to be ‘set and forget’, then the Wonga Wonga Vine is not for you. On the other hand if you enjoy the richness, beauty and diversity of plants which can be readily managed by regular pruning, then the Wonga Wonga Vine (Pandorea pandorana) is a beauty. It’s ideal for covering a trellis, fence or an unsightly wall. Its common name is derived from the Dharug Australian Aboriginal language group. The word translates as either ‘pigeon’ or ‘vine’. P. pandorana can reach up to 20 metres in length. The straight, strong canes were used by First /BUJPOT 1FPQMFT UP NBLF TQFBST Another use was to weave the canes when green and flexible to
make fishing and prawning nets. The straight grain of the canes makes it easy to graft shorter pieces together. P. pandorana grows in the moist forest areas of eastern Australia and also in some drier areas. It is also a native to a broad sweep of countries in the Pacific region. The vine has glossy dark green compound leaves, and bursts into a glorious profusion of clustered bell-shaped flowers in mid-spring. It grows best in full sun where it flowers profusely, but it will also flower well in part shade. Flower colour is variable. Garden specimens propagated from seed may cross-fertilise and flowers can be any combination of the parentage. Flowering is followed by boat-shaped green seed pods which mature to brown. These
burst open to disperse a many flat, papery seeds. The name ‘Pandorea’ refers to the Greek mythological figure Pandora, who opened a sealed box to release evil spirits. This plant’s name alludes to the seed capsules and the many seeds which are released at maturity. Over time where there is sufficient mulch and moisture, seedling plants have germinated in our garden, including a pure white form not previously known here. It is necessary to propagate new plants from cuttings to ensure consistent flower colour. Plants strike readily from semi-hardwood cuttings. Popular named cultivars available commercially are P. pandorana A(PMEFO 4IPXFST A3VCZ #FMMF BOE A4OPXCFMMT " DMPTF SFM ative with similar spread and habit and bearing large trumpet flowers is P. jasminoides.

YOUR HEALTH Pfeiffer Wines
Happiness Chardonnay 2020 WHILE many of us have long shunned online shopping in favour of a more traditional and personal in-store experience, the last couple of years have forced even the most determined luddites to get with the program. In some cases it has been because of pure necessity - if we wanted something that wasn’t deemed essential we had to buy it online - while others wanted to limit their exposure to the outside world. We’ve found it mostly easy and convenient, albeit with long wait times for postal deliveries, but these days it also doesn’t preclude you from shopping locally and supporting regional businesses. There are also bargains to be found - a bonus when you feel like rewarding yourself. Ticking all boxes for need, pleasure, local and affordable is the Pfeiffer Wines Happiness range Chardonnay. The wine has a light straw colour and peachy cream aroma which is really inviting. It has a fresh and lively taste with bright peach fruit and pleasant citrus acidity. Serve lightly chilled and enjoy the way that creamy vanilla background flavour stays with you. It’s great value and ideal for those who enjoy Chardonnay

with Michalla Baumann, Senior Clinician, Headspace Albury Wodonga & Wangaratta ◆ CARING FOR EACH OTHER: Now, more than ever, it’s important to care for each other and ourselves.
Take care of each other with their everyday meal, complementing creamy pasta, baked fish and chicken dishes. While the cellar door in Wahgunyah is open for tastings and sales, it’s also easy to order by the dozen online and have delivered. You’ll feel instantly happier when that doorbell rings. COST: About $100 per dozen.
This Day in History, 1979 THE stock bridge, opened in January 1935 across the Ovens near the site of the first punt over the river, finally cracked and gave way under a loaded truck. A water main was also broken. The old bridge never fully recovered, and is now closed to heavy traffic.
SOME of you may have noticed an interesting theme in recent advertising campaigns on the television. Do you remember seeing ads where dads are doing things for daughters, daughters doing things for mothers, friends checking in on each other, people leaving surprise gifts for others, a little boy offering a crying girl chocolate and neighbours doing surprise grocery shopping for each other? This matches the messaging we have been receiving from our government and health officials around the COVID-19 virus. If you haven’t guessed, the message is this: take care of each other. As we are all finding our own struggles and ways of dealing with a quickly changing world this remains as important as it has ever to support each other at every chance we get. When it comes to transmission of the virus we all know what we need to do to take care of each other as we have heard it on a loop for the past year and a half. We take care of each other by wear-
ing masks, getting tested, staying home if we are sick, following restrictions and guidelines and calling to hotlines if we are unsure. Just as important are the things we need to do to support each other through the above list of things that can lead to feelings of isolation, loneliness, and a myriad of other things. Take care of each other by calling, video chatting, instant messaging, texting and meme-ing your friends, family, work colleagues, school peers, team mates, and group members. Seeing what you can do to lighten someone else’s load by doing a job, chore or errand for them. An hour or two of babysitting where allowed could be very appreciated. Make or buy someone a small thoughtful gift. Give someone the gift of your time and understanding just by being someone who will listen. There is one more thing that everyone can do to take care of the people in their lives that is often missed when discussing this issue - let oth-
ers take care of you as well. Let people know how you are doing. Let people know what you need. Do not leave your friends and family guessing what is going on for you. Even if you don’t need them to do anything but listen, let them do this for you. You know yourself how stressful it can be when you are not sure how the people in your life are travelling. So, take care of other by letting them take care of you. And finally, you can take care of others by taking care of yourself. I think most of us have heard the adage of putting on your own oxygen mask before helping others put on theirs. Put plainly this means you can’t help others if you are not coping yourself. So go for a walk, make yourself a nice meal, get some sleep, take time with friends and family, do something you enjoy and reach our to your local doctor as needed. If you would like some more information on taking care of yourself and others you can find this at https://headspace.org.au/.

GONE FISHING Ŷ
◆ YELLA GOLD: Terry Alexander with a nice Lake Nillahcootie yellowbelly caught on a yabby on Saturday morning.
Cool spring, but fish are still biting in lakes, rivers SO far this spring has been one of the coolest that I can remember with 20 degree days being something of a rarity. Despite this, there are still a few fish biting right across the region. During the week I went trout fishing in a couple of small streams. I found the trout to be willing to take a bait and hit a lure. The trout are biting in the streams right across the region. I have had reports of trout being caught in the Mitta Mitta River, Kiewa River, King River and Ovens River upstream of Bright. October is one of the best months of the year to catch trout in North East Victoria in both lakes and rivers. On Saturday I went to Lake Nillahcootie with my Dad Terry. He caught a nice sized yellowbelly on a yabby in the first five minutes of arriving. By the time of leaving at 10am, we had caught three yellowbelly and one carp, with just the one yellowbelly being big enough to keep. There was no particular bait or lure that worked best. One yellowbelly was caught on a yabby, another on worms and a third on a lipless crankbait lure.
nemedia.com.au
with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA The carp was foul hooked on a lipless crankbait lure. Some might call it a fluke, I call it pure skill. I fished at Broken Creek near Katamatite during the week and did not get a single bite, nor have I heard any reports from that area. Maybe we need that warmer weather to fire the fish up over there? As with recent weeks Lake Hume has been fishing really well. Once again Cliff Karnatz has been doing exceptionally well. His catch of the week this week was a 72cm brown trout trolled on a wide bodied McGrath lure. The Albury Wodonga fishing pages are lit up with fish photos from Lake Hume at the moment, including some huge trout and yellowbelly being caught just below the weir itself.

Returning to Australia in 2016, Joel had a clear idea of what he wanted to do. “Being in the army was a big defining moment for me as I realised my love for agriculture and decided to put my life work into it, returning to the vineyard in May four years ago,” he said. “Mum and dad have also been a huge inspiration with what they have achieved with the winery and restaurant and have been great support in allowing me to experiment with different sustainable techniques. “The first two seasons I bunkered down was 2018-19 and being incredibly dry, it really hit a note with me that we needed a drought plan with a focus on sustaining our produce during dry years, and that’s when I started looking around at what we could do.” With that in mind, Joel who jumps onto the Australian Wine Research Institute website frequently, discovered the Sustainable Wine Growing Australia (SWGA) website and its accreditation process. “We joined SWGA as a member where we entered details and data such as fuel usage, energy output, pruning methods, acreage and harvest methods that benchmarks you against other wineries and regions,” he said. “It was a really helpful step for us to see where we were sitting with our inputs and outputs, and a helpful marker for where you should be sitting, and there is an emphasis on carbon output too.” Joel has heavily invested in carbon capture which is about plants absorbing carbon back into the soil as they grow, with mid rows between vines cover cropped. “Carbon is like a glue that holds the soil together where it improves water holding capabilities and soil health and the microbiology of the soil significantly improves the high end of the carbon,

and that’s a really big thing for us,” he said. With a focus on cereal variety for cover cropping, sheep directly benefit from grazing through the vineyard where it helps with feed management as well as natural fertiliser with a reduction in the use of herbicides. “We started with straw under vine and that’s a fantastic drought strategy,” Joel said. “Now we have wheat and barley crop spread out to half a metre high and a metre across under vine where it breaks down and creates a very thick layer which protects against heat waves and really dry conditions. “It reduces the temperature down to 13 or 14 degrees on a 40 degree day which is amazing.” Joel said part of the sustainability plan is to double the number of sheep from 1000 head by sowing pastures instead of relying on natural grass and clover where more mouths will be sustained over dry years. The hands-on vineyard and farm manager with a love of being outdoors every day, said while tractor work can be sometimes grinding, those times are exciting as he knows what is being sown for the growing season ahead.
“With my life heavily dominated by agriculture, I’ve been able to take viticulture ideas over to our broad acre cropping, and sheep and farming operation too, as well as vice-versa. “It’s really rewarding seeing what you’re doing is working and once sustainability certified it’s a big leg up,” he said. Besides drawing on extensive winemaking and viticulture experience from industry professionals around Rutherglen and several families who have been in the area for more than 150 years for advice, Joel suggests that people wanting to go down the sustainability certification path would find SWGA most supportive. “I think the Australian wine research sector is world class where it is at the forefront and when it comes to the AWRI - they are international leaders in viticulture and wine.” And Joel’s favourite wine? “It would have to be durif as I love the heavier style of reds that we make here,” he said. “We have a variety of wines with a heavy table focus and among them are the whites - Chardonnay, Riesling, Grenache Blanc, with reds Cabernet, Merlot, Shiraz and Cinsaut, Durif and straight Shiraz and a Rose.”
