FOR Adam Densten, growing up in Corowa meant summer days spent on rope swings, fishing, riding tyre tubes down the river, camping and craying before winter rolled around and he would play any number of sports. “We were outdoors all the time back then, I loved the freedom of it,” Adam said. “I was really sporty - footy, tennis, golf, cricket, swimming, whatever, it was right up my alley to be playing sports any time of the year and as well as playing footy for Corowa/Rutherglen, I also spent time playing with the Wang Maggies. “I went to Galen College in Wangaratta for my secondary education so I got to know the Three Chain Road pretty well too.” Adam’s love of the outdoors and sports no doubt led to his decision to choose a career as a physiotherapist, and he still manages to work full-time alongside his television and radio commitments. “I certainly have a lot going on, but I’m good at multitasking. “I’m working full-time as a physio in Melbourne, planning a wedding, doing a podcast with Symon (Lovett) and we’re working as hard as possible behind the scenes to make things happen for ourselves. “Symon and I would love to host radio and TV shows and we love to do stuff together where people can have a laugh along with us or at us. “We’re more than happy to be the jesters.” The pair get recognised fairly often, but they’re often asked if they went to school with the recogniser’s child or children or if they work at the local Bunnings. But for those who are familiar with the television show Gogglebox Australia or I’m A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here, Adam and Symon will be instantly recognisable. “It’s a funny story as to how we got involved with Gogglebox,” Adam said.

Rat bait ingestion RAT bait is a fatal toxin to dogs and cats and unfortunately there are no pet safe rat bait products available in Australia. The main type of rat bait available in Australia are anti-coagulants which kill rats and mice by blocking their ability to clot their blood and consequently bleeding out. The same thing will happen to dogs and cats and this is why it is so deadly. When an animal ingests rat bait it will start to deplete the animal’s vitamin K levels in the body. Vitamin K is an essential part of clotting the blood so without this an animal cannot clot its blood. Animals do store vitamin K in their body and have roughly a three to four day store of this, therefore clinical signs of rat bait toxicity will not become apparent until four to five days later and will initially be very vague clinical signs. Clinical signs of rat bait ingestion include but are not limited to lethargy, vomiting, pale gums, inappetence, coughing, trouble breathing or bleeding excessively from small wounds. By the time pale gums are noticed the animal will have very little red blood cells left in the body and this is an emergency that requires treatment

with Ovens & Kiewa Veterinary Hospital as soon as possible. Rat bait ingestion can be diagnosed three to four days after ingestion by testing the blood’s ability to clot. The good thing about rat bait is that it is treatable if it is caught early, treatment includes replacing vitamin K by supplementing this in the form of tablets and injections. This therapy is required for four to six weeks to allow the toxin to stop working and the blood to clot normally. If the toxin is severe and there is a large amount of blood loss the animal may require a blood transfusion as well as vitamin K therapy. The best treatment for rat bait ingestion if it has been known to be ingested is to induce vomiting and get as much of the bait out of the body, there are also other therapies that can be used to bind toxins in the body and remove them if it is known early that it has been ingested. If you see your animal ingest rat bait or if you suspect your animal may have eaten rat bait and is showing signs of being unwell visit your vet immediately.

◆ SHADY CHARACTER: The Plectranthus Argentatus grows well in semi-shade to shady areas in local gardens. PHOTO: Helen Van Riet

Plectranthus Argentatus (silver shield) FOR shady spaces where ground covers may be difficult to establish and maintain, Plectranthus argentatus (silver spurflower) is a sure-fire winner. It is native to coastal areas of Queensland, NT and NSW. This easy-care perennial groundcover has soft, opposite, silver-grey velvety leaves. Upright side shoots to about 50cm are borne prolifically on lightly suckering ground-hugging stems. Individual plants may cover an area of several square metres. Despite its creeping habit, P. argentatus is shallow-rooted, and is easily managed. A minimum of supplementary watering in dry periods will keep plants growing through the heat of summer. Severe frosts may cut the foliage back somewhat, but plants recover quickly and

completely in spring. The addition of an all-purpose soluble fertiliser will encourage rapid recovery after winter. Spikes of purple flowers, similar to those of other members of the Lamiaceae family (e.g. sage, basil and coleus) are borne in autumn. There are around 230 known genera in the Lamiaceae family. Cuttings strike readily and rapidly. New plants can also be easily produced by digging up sections of already-rooted stems of ‘mother’ plants and potting them on for roots to become well-established. This versatile plant works well as an indoor pot plant in a well-lit but shady position. P. argentatus is also a winner as a hanging basket specimen. In the garden, the silver-grey foliage contrasts well with bright green strappy foliage such as Di-

anella revoluta (Black Anther Lily) or low-growing shrubs such as Correa ‘Dusky Bells’. P. argentatus has survived for many years in a semi-shaded, dry area of our garden. The original plant was grown from a cutting from a friend’s garden. The soil is mulched with woodchip. This is ideal for the stems to lightly sucker; a good survival tactic which allows the plant mass to effectively cover the area. Each winter the foliage is knocked back by frost, but it rapidly recovers in spring. Occasionally we have given it a tidy up and light prune in early summer. This foliage contrast plant is a great survivor and is a worthy addition to either an exotic or Australian garden.

YOUR HEALTH Buller Wines King Valley Riesling

ONE of the most memorable moments of the pandemic lockdown experience, for all the wrong reasons, was the panic buying and tussles over toilet paper. While it is apparently quite a common human response when thrust into these circumstances, it was a still a frightening display of irrational behaviour. A friend of mind was baffled by the concern over goods and services we once used to manage without, although she admitted to getting twitchy when limits went up at the bottle shop. It wasn’t about quantity, she insisted, but a very first world concern about spending more time at home and not having access to what she might impulsively order from a bar stool. A keen cook, she also wanted to ensure she had all the wine varieties covered to match the menus she was now planning to prepare at home, including pork schnitzel and Riesling. Buller Wines Riesling was one I was glad to have on hand when tucking into my own pork and sauerkraut dinner. It has a pale golden, slightly green-tinged colour and distinctive aroma which is alive with citrus and lime freshness but is also a little floral.

with Anita McPherson

Made with fruit sourced from the King Valley, the flavour is clean and crisp with perhaps a hint of apple along with zippy citrus, and it lasts after the dry finish. It cuts through the rich crumb of the schnitzel and the buttery sauerkraut beautifully and is a match that would be hard to replicate. Stocking the cellar is so not hoarding - it just makes sense. PRICE: Around $21 a bottle.

This Day in History, 1866 THE ‘Wahgunyah’ was built for John Foord specifically for the river trade along the Murray’s upper reaches between Echuca and Albury. She was reported to be just over 70 feet long, with timber planking over an iron frame. Durable redgum was used for the bottom and oregon for the sides. The ‘Wahgunyah’ was launched on this day and named by Miss Ellen Foord. The vessel survived until 1878 when it was burnt in a fire.

with Naturopath Belinda McPherson (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY)

The role of naturopathy in your health care NATUROPATHY and herbal medicine are like the ‘general practice’ of natural medicine. People can come to see us about absolutely anything, that’s one of my favourite things about my work. Most commonly though it’s because they are tired, worried, not sleeping well, experiencing some hormonal changes or want some support for the health of their kids. All of these things impact negatively on a person’s energy, so it’s probably not surprising that the bulk of my patients are just tired and somewhat anxious. Ultimately naturopaths are aiming to improve the energy and healing response of the body using herbal

and nutritional prescriptions, whilst implementing simple diet and lifestyle adjustments. For me, naturopathy is all about supporting a person through whatever is leading to deficient energy levels (illness, worry, fear, insomnia etc.). It might be supporting new mothers who are struggling to breastfeed or struggling with a colicky baby, or using herbal medicine to manage mastitis and postpartum anxiety. It might be meeting a couple before they conceive and working step by step through their anxiety, nutritional deficiency and underlying hormonal imbalance. Often it is about helping to resolve

an infection, using herbs to treat and recover from heavy periods and hormonal imbalance, integrating a better dietary strategy into family life, listening when there is loss, fear or stress. There are so many things that can take our energy away and finding ways to get it back are so very rewarding for me and, I believe, a huge part of naturopathic practice. Kids’ infections respond really well to herbal medicine. Using herbal medicine with my own kids has made me realize the importance of super simple treatment plans. It just works so well and I look forward to sharing this knowledge with you next time I see you in our clinic.

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE: If we imagine this woman is experiencing the symptoms of a cold on a brisk winter morning, her body is currently engaing a great many senses including nociception, stretch receptors, thermoception, and perhaps thirst and hunger.

Common senses - there are many more than five

WE’RE all aware of the ‘five senses’, touch, smell, sight, hearing, and taste. But, a bit like certain rock bands who have a bass guitarist that everyone forgets about, the human body possesses a great many more senses that most people have never heard of. This week, I thought I shed some light on on senses that don’t ever get in the headlines. Thermoception: The ability to sense heat and cold. This also is thought of as more than one sense, not just because of the two hot/cold receptors, but also because there is a completely different type of thermoceptor - in terms of the mechanism for detection - in the brain. These thermoceptors in the brain are used for monitoring internal body temperature. Proprioception: This sense gives you the ability to tell where your body parts are, relative to other body parts.

This sense is one of the things police officers in the United States test when they pull over someone who they think is driving drunk (you’ll likely have seen a demonstration of this in the show ‘Cops’. The “close your eyes and touch your nose” test is testing this sense. This sense is used all the time in little ways, such as when you scratch an itch on your foot, but never once look at your foot to see where your hand is relative to your foot. It’s also one of the main senses that gets thrown off by experiences like VR games, where your sense of your body doesn’t match your sight. Nociception: In a word - pain. This was once thought to simply be the result of overloading other senses, such as “touch”, but this has been found not to be the case and instead, it is its own unique sensory system. There are three distinct types of pain receptors: cutaneous (skin), somatic

(bones and joints), and visceral (body organs). Equilibrioception: The sense that allows you to keep your balance and sense body movement in terms of acceleration and directional changes. This sense also allows for perceiving gravity. The sensory system for this is found in your inner ears and is called the vestibular labyrinthine system. Anyone who’s ever had this sense warped due to dizziness or an ear infection knows how important this is. When it’s not working or malfunctioning, you literally can’t tell up from down and moving from one location to another without aid is nearly impossible. Stretch Receptors: These are found in such places as the lungs, bladder, stomach, and the gastrointestinal tract. A type of stretch receptor, that senses dilation of blood vessels, is also often involved in headaches.

Let us help you create a beautiful garden this autumn

Chemoreceptors: These trigger an area of the medulla in the brain that is involved in detecting blood-borne hormones and drugs. It also is involved in the vomiting reflex and plays an important role in chemotherapy. Thirst: This system more or less allows your body to monitor its hydration level and so your body knows when it should tell you to drink. Hunger: This system allows your body to detect when you need to eat something. Magnetoception: This is the ability to detect magnetic fields, which is principally useful in providing a sense of direction when detecting the Earth’s magnetic field. Unlike most birds, humans do not have a strong magentoception, however, experiments have demonstrated that we do tend to have some sense of magnetic fields. The mechanism for this is not com-

pletely understood; it is theorized that this has something to do with deposits of ferric iron in our noses. This would make sense if that is correct as humans who are given magnetic implants have been shown to have a much stronger magnetoception than humans without such implants. Time: This one is debated as no singular mechanism has been found that allows people to perceive time. However, experimental data has conclusively shown humans have a startling accurate sense of time, particularly when younger. The mechanism we use for this seems to be a distributed system involving the cerebral cortex, cerebellum, and basal ganglia. Long term time keeping seems to be monitored by the suprachiasmatic nuclei (responsible for the circadian rhythm). Short term time keeping is handled by other cell systems.

“It was a Thursday afternoon and I was sitting with about 10 guys having a beer at a pub in Port Melbourne after a hard day of studying at university. “A lady came over and said she’d been watching us and that she was casting for a show and thought we’d be perfect. “We were all like ‘no thanks, not interested’, but she kept trying to convince us that it was a great show, she said it was big in England and that it was about people watching people watching TV. “We thought it sounded boring and stupid, which we told her, but she said, ‘No, no, it’s really great, it’s called Gogglebox’. “We told her it was the worst name, with the worst storyline and that we definitely were not inter-

ested but she gave me her email address and told me to get in contact. “I put the paper in my pocket and didn’t think about it again until the next day when I found it. “I texted a few of the guys to ask if they wanted to pursue it and Symon was the only one who said yes, so I emailed her and the rest is history.” During their time on Gogglebox, Adam and Symon were invited to take part in the Longest Kick on AFL Grand Final Day and met the Fox Footy crew, which landed them a TV show about premierships and footy trips. “We got that job but then it got shut down because of the (COVID) restrictions, which was disappointing,” Adam said. During the four years Adam and

Symon were on Gogglebox, the show won four Logies and Adam and Symon were lucky enough to attend and accept the award, which was high on their list of ‘cool parties’ to go to at the time. Most recently, Adam and Symon have been recording a radio podcast and been on tour with the Canadian Club/Empty Esky national campaign, as well as a stint on I’m A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here. “I jokingly emailed the CEO of Channel 10 and offered myself and Symon as local and funny hosts for the show happening the following year. “At the time, I was told that it was very early in the process, but if we wanted jungle experience, they could offer us something, so we went on that instead.”

While Adam was on ‘Celebrity’ he was having an issue with a math problem and happened to drop the name of his former maths teacher from Galen. “Mr Watson was a good teacher but I was a terrible student and I didn’t listen properly and tried to outsmart myself and the game. “I apologise unreservedly to Mr Watson for being a bad student. “That might be why I haven’t been asked back to give any career talks - I was only runner-up Dux, plus it’s hard to sell a person who is known for sitting on a couch watching TV. “My mate, Nick Frawley, was Dux of my year and has gone on to become a doctor, so he’s more likely to be called on to give inspirational talks like that.”

GONE FISHING

INSIDE BUSINESS

◆ ON THE BITE: A lovely rainbow trout caught in a tributary of the Ovens River on a small Strike Tiger nymph soft plastic lure last week.

A perfect time to get out trout fishing SUDDENLY it is winter, or so it seems. Last weekend’s Antarctic blast may give the illusion that winter is here and the fishing is quiet, but do not be mistaken...there’s still some warm weather ahead. April is a fantastic time to go trout fishing, and over the last week I have caught quite a few trout myself. On those warm April days when the thermometer pushes up into the low 20s, the trout usually feed like mad. The best time of the day to target trout during April is the middle of the day, when the sun is at its warmest, the bugs and insects are out flying and the entire ecosystem is alive. On the cold damp mornings, sleep in. Wait for the sun to get warm enough to dry the wings of the beetles and bugs, then hit the water. I reckon 10am to 3pm is a great time to head out, unlike the middle of summer when sunrise and sunset is best. The Ovens River upstream of Bright and its tributaries have all been fishing very well,

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA so too has the Buffalo River upstream of Lake Buffalo - the further up the better. The upper King River has also been fishing really well, up around Pineapple Flat. These are only the reports that I have heard. I am sure that just about every waterway that has trout in it will be fishing well at the moment as the trout try to gain weight before their annual spawning run in May and June. Try using small dark soft plastics that may look like any of the small black bugs floating down the streams at the moment. Crickets, March flies, blow flies, millipedes etc. they’re all small and black and all make up part of a trout’s diet.
