Giving a voice to our ageing community By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE

FOR Gerard Mansour, Commissioner for Senior Victorians, wanting to help people get the best out of growing older and ageing well has been a “lifelong experience”. The commissioner, who has been in the role for seven years, has held a range of other positions in the aged care sector and strives to give a voice to older people. “My role immediately before this was the inaugural chief executive officer of Leading Age Services Australia; a national aged care association and, prior to that, I ran the state aged care association,” he said. “It’s always been a lifelong experience; I started my career as a youth worker running peak bodies for peak services and I’ve worked in the children and youth sector. “I think our community often underestimates what older people have to offer; there’s an enthusiasm about youth and children but as I got older I noticed that we undervalue what older people contribute to society. “I’ve always had an interest in getting the best out of growing older; aged care is much later on in peoples journeys but I encourage people to look further back down stream and ask questions about what can we do aged 60, or even earlier, to give people the best possible experience of growing older.

Snail bait poisoning a high risk for dogs SNAILS and slugs can be annoying garden pests wreaking havoc on our lovely garden plants. Snail bait and poisons are readily available and effective for controlling these pests. However, they also pose a significant risk to our pets as they contain a toxic product called metaldehyde. Very small amounts of metaldehyde are required to cause poisoning. The major sign associated with snail bait toxicity is twitching initially that then progress to seizures. The muscle contractions can raise body temperature so high it can cause brain damage and even death. Dogs may begin to exhibit signs within 20 minutes of having eaten the poison. Treatment is aimed at controlling

muscle contractions and removing the metaldehyde. There is no direct antidote. It may be possible to induce vomiting if clinical signs are mild. However, in severe cases patients are anaesthetized and the stomach is pumped, or an enema may be performed. Intravenous medications to control seizures, fluid therapy and body temperature monitoring are required while supporting hospitalised patients. Chances of recovery depend on how much poison is ingested and how quickly treatment is initiated. To prevent this happening to your pet, ensure they do not have access to snail bait at home and if you suspect they may have eaten some - contact your vet immediately. with Sophie Lorback, NORTH EAST NATURAL HEALTH CENTRE

HOPS are an excellent herbal medicine that are easy to grow in a small home garden. Most famous as an ingredient in beer, hops are used by herbalists to improve sleep and digestion. Hops can be taken as an herbal tea, disguise the bitter taste with some chamomile or peppermint, or hung up near the bedside with lavender and chamomile to promote sleep. They can also be dried and crushed and added to a bath with Epsom salts to aid relaxation. Hops take little work to grow

and look beautiful growing on a trellis near the vegetable patch, up the side of a water tank or over a balcony. We have recently planted one rhizome in a pot outside the clinic and hope that in summer it will provide shade and character to the front window area of the building. Winter is a time that hops can become a little sensitive and need some extra TLC. As the leaves start to fall, cut your hops plant back to the ground level and then cover with plenty of mulch (extra compost,

pea straw, grass clippings etc) heaped up over the roots. The roots can be very frost sensitive and require this care so they can bounce back and sprout again in spring. If you take the time to look after your hops in winter, expect quick growth from the sprouted roots as it warms up. You can then provide something like a trellis or string for the vine to cling to and climb upwards and then train it along a fence or awning. The hops’ flowers will be ready to pick in summer.

Morrisons of Glenrowan 2018 Durif WHILE I’d prefer not be one of those people who bangs on about weather, stating the bleeding obvious, it feels like we’ve been experiencing an exceptionally cold winter. Heavy cloud, still days and barely any sun have meant the mercury has barely reached into double figures during the daytime, something we haven’t experienced for years. .BZCF JU T KVTU NF CVU * GFFM hungrier when it’s cold, so I’m experimenting with new recipes for chunky protein and carbladen soups which are more like casseroles in disguise. This Day in History, 1960 THE death occurred on this day of Alice Manfield, who knew Mt Buffalo and its flora and fauna, its ridges and gullies, and its many moods better perhaps than anyone alive. The Manfield family had been pioneers of the mountain, and Alice chose to spend much of her life on Buffalo, moving up and down the mountain by horseback, taking supplies or guiding tourists, sharing with them her knowledge of the mountain. She wrote a book on the lyre birds of the mountain, and came to be known as ‘Guide Alice’. She was interred in the Bright cemetery.

◆ A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY: Walking, or even stretching can help reduce stress and boost your immune system.

Your immune system is key to protecting your health

THE coronavirus has definitely changed our lives forever. It has produced fear and confusion in many, though it also has helped many of us to slow down and take stock of what is important in or lives and to experience the beauty of our own state. It’s easy to think that the coronavirus is the only nasty out there, though; as we go through another winter there are countless other germs and viruses that we need to also protect ourselves from. Of course we need to wash our hands regularly, sanitise and wear masks, though our immune system is the primary thing we need to work on. Just as we take care of our car regularly we also need to take care of our immune system. We need to make sure we have lots of fighters in our army against invaders (germs, bacteria, viruses etc) - most countries spend a big percentage of

Over wintering fruit fly Queensland fruit fly (Qfly) numbers were high last season due to the La Nina weather pattern and a shortage of harvest labour resulting in excess fruit left on trees and the ground. It is likely higher than normal numbers of adult flies have entered the winter season and sought refuges in warm spots where they may survive until temperatures increase (Qfly do not hibernate in the ground over winter). These refuges exist in evergreen trees such as orange, lemon, grapefruit, feijoa, olive, loquat, guava and avocado located in urban and peri-urban areas and near houses and buildings on farms. Qfly in a slow metabolic state on the under-side of leaves of lemon and other evergreen trees. When temperatures rise above 16°C flies become active and seek out food sources and a mate to breed. You can gauge whether Qfly is present on your property by hanging Qfly monitoring traps (maletargeting para-pheromone traps) to detect any build up and then start baiting. Act early by bait spraying A bait spray is a mixture of protein bait attractant (usually a yeast liquid), mixed with a small amount of insecticide (organic options are also available). Approximately 50ml is applied as a ‘spot spray’ to the trunk or foliage. There is no need to spray the whole tree. Target loquats and latehanging oranges to reduce first generation post-winter Qfly adults. Female flies need to feed on protein before laying eggs. They are attracted to the protein and when ingested, the insecticide kills the fly before egg laying occurs. Apply bait sprays at weekly intervals and

re-apply bait immediately after rainfall of 2mm or more. Baits should be applied as high in the foliage or trunk as possible. If you do not wish to use a chemical insecticide, alternative products are available, including a natural bait spray mixture, which contains a bacterium (registered for organic use), instead of a chemical insecticide. Benefits of bait sprays Benefits of bait sprays include the process of spot spraying instead of cover spraying. Bait spraying is environmentally friendly and has minimal impacts on pollinators and beneficial insects. For more information about bait spray products and their application, contact your local supplier. For more information about Qfly, visit www.fruitflycontrol.com.au

“That’s a key part of my driver; what are the things we can learn from others to give us the best positive opportuneness but, also, what are the challenges we need to be aware of that we need to plan for.” In his seven years, commissioner Mansour has implemented a “greater focus on older people in key policy decisions of government” which he said was an important positive. “You get things such as the current Retirement Villages Act review and putting older people at the centre of our thinking,” he said. “We’ve implemented things like the seniors travel card and the seniors business discount card for people who aren’t eligible for those travel discounts, so there’s a number of practical benefits like that but the most important thing is giving a voice to older people within government and government decisions. “The other significant thing I enjoy are the trips, like the one I’ll be doing to Wangaratta, where it’s about

community education. “Sharing the things that really make a difference in their life and providing guidance documents with important information. “Both the advocacy within government and empowering individual people to make more positive decisions are important to me.” The Wangaratta event this month will see commissioner Mansour present his report, which was released in December last year, on ageing well. “I’ve done two major reports as commissioner; one about isolation and loneliness and this one on ageing well,” he said. “Because of these reports I’ve got more clarity on what the story is for older people and we’ve got these eight attributes for ageing well which gives us more clarity about what it is that gives older people that quality of life. “These include respect, financial and personal security, health autonomy, mobility, purpose and connection to family,

friends and society. “I’m only now getting the chance to get out and share those stories thanks to COVID and I’m really looking forward to getting back to face to face and I’m delighted to come to Wangaratta to do that. “I also want to get my finger on the pulse of what’s happening in their lives so while I’m coming to share my key learnings, I’m also there to listen and am keen to hear what it’s been like learning to live with COVID as older people. “I have a concern that some are still overly cautious of reconnecting with social groups and contacting friends so I want to hear from them how they’re finding that whole experience and what I can learn to advocate on their behalf.” The event will be held at the Wangaratta Performing Arts and Conventions Centre on Tuesday, July 20 at 2pm. ◆ COME JOIN US: Friendly lift staff await your arrival at Falls Creek. PHOTO: Chris Hocking

Good snow coming GOOD snow is forecast for this week building to the weekend across the alpune area. Snow persists overnight and through Saturday, and through some of Sunday, with good falls likely. FALLS CREEK The resort started the week with an average snow base of around a foot, which was expected to increase with snow showers forecast for most of this week, together with ongoing snowmaking. Some 12 of the resort’s 15 lifts have been operating, offering access to all the back terrain. Cross country skiers have been making the most of the groomed trails in the McKay area, down to Pretty Valley Hut, the south side of the McKay loop and up the summit trail. For up to date details go to https://www.fallscreek.com.au/ snowreport/. MT HOTHAM The resort started this week with an average snow depth of 43cms, but on and off snow showers earlier this week, strengthening later in the week, and ongoing snowmaking, will add to the base. Big D, Audi Quattro, Heavenly Valley, Road Runner and Summit Trainer lifts have been operating and offering skiers access to beginner and intermediate terrain.

One of the resort’s terrain parks remains open together with numerous trails for cross country skiers. For up to date details go to https://www.mthotham.com.au/ on-mountain/conditions/snowweather DINNER PLAIN The alpine village opened the Cobungra Platter slope for skiing and snowboarding last week. Buoyed by ideal snow conditions - a combination of natural falls and snowmaking - visitors have been using the poma lift to ski and snowboard on the platter slope from 9am to 1pm daily, before the slope transitions to free tobogganing sessions every afternoon from 1.30pm. Cross country trails are also open. with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ YOU CAN’T STOP THE SIGNAL, MAL: Scan the QR code above. Where does it lead? Who can say?

The black and white of QR codes WHILE QR codes have been in common use for some time now, this past year has seen a surge in their adoption - particularly with state governments initiative to track the movements of citizens in order to curb the spread of COVID-19. Individuals and businesses are quickly realising the versatility of what is fundamentally a fairly basic technology, as the best ideas often are. But what are the origins of the QR code, and who invented them? What does a board game have to do with these fancy barcodes, anyway? This week, I thought we’d take a look at the history of this nifty invention, and, as an added bonus, you can read this story online by scanning my very own QR code. What are QR codes? QR or ‘Quick Response’ codes are a type of barcode that can be read easily by a digital device and which stores information as a series of pixels in a square-shaped grid. QR codes are frequently used to track information about products in a supply chain and – because many smartphones have built-in QR readers – they are often used in marketing and advertising campaigns. Standard barcodes can only be read in one direction – top to bottom.

That means they can only store a small amount of information, usually in an alphanumeric format. But a QR code is read in two directions – top to bottom and right to left. This allows it to house significantly more data. The data stored in a QR code can include website URLs, phone numbers, or up to 4,000 characters of text. QR codes can also be used to: t Link directly to a website or download an app on the Apple App Store or Google Play. t Authenticate online accounts and verify login details. t Access Wi-Fi by storing encryption details such as SSID, password, and encryption type. t Send and receive payment information. t And much more – a company in the UK called QR Memories even creates QR codes for use on gravestones, allowing people to scan the code to read more about that deceased person’s life (if they have an obituary or news story relating to them online). Who invented the QR code? The technology was the brainchild of Hara Masahiro, an engineer at a manufacturing company called Denso in Japan.

While his company had previously used barcodes to keep track of parts, the system was inefficient - requiring up to 10 barcodes to be scanned per box of components. Employees would get tired of scanning so many barcodes, and so often parts would be misplaced or unaccounted for. A better code was required, one that could hold more information, and thus the QR code was born. Funnily enough, the inspiration of the design of the QR code came from the board game GO. Those of you who are avid readers of mine might recall I have discussed this particular game at length before, describing the way artificial intelligence developers used GO to train computers capable of machine learning. Comparing the typical board of a game of GO to a QR code, it becomes very obvious that it was the inspiration for the technology, as it bears an undeniable resemblance. Hara was a great enthusiast for strategy games, and one day during his lunch break it struck him that the board’s near infinite amount of configurations represented a straightforward way to convey information. And so, way back in 1994, the QR code was born.
