TWO local women are at the helm of a reinvigorated Centre Against Violence, as the new leaders of the organisation. Jaime Chubb, who will assume the CAV chief executive officer role on October 4, and Dr Corina Modderman, who stepped up to the position of chair in November after six years on the CAV board, say they are looking forward to building on the fantastic work of previous CEO Kerry Burns over 16 years. Ms Chubb comes to her role after more than seven years as the Rural City of Wangaratta’s director community wellbeing, bringing with her a psychology, youth work and community services background, while Dr Modderman has experience working in the field of child protection and family violence in the Netherlands and UK, as well as Australia. Wangaratta-based CAV was formerly known as Upper Murray Centre Against Sexual Assault (UMCASA), and was established in the early 1990s by a group of people from the North East. Since 1992, the organisation has been managed by a community-based board of management, and in 2012 was renamed Centre Against Violence to incorporate the diverse programs operating under its auspice in the Ovens Murray region. CAV receives core funding through the State Government, along with some funding from the Federal Government to support family violence and sexual assault service delivery in rural Victoria. It provides crisis, short term, medium term and long term counselling; advocacy, information and support about family violence, sexual assault and harmful sexual behaviours; sexual assault services to victim survivors and children; crisis accommodation, support and recovery services to victim survivors and children experiencing family violence; and services to children under 10 with harmful sexual behaviours and young people aged 10 to 14 who have sexually abusive behaviours.

Food for thought how do you position your horses’ hay net? HORSES have evolved primarily as a grazing herbivore, grazing for about 15 hours out of a 24 hour day. With changes to the management and housing of horses, the supply of constant forage through the use of a slow release hay net has been recommended. A study has recently investigated how the position of a hay net affects the horses’ natural posture. Riders are frequently aware of the horses’ position under saddle, but often the natural feeding position of the horse is overlooked. The research found that low hay net position resulted in more natural pos-

When the hay net was located at the height of the withers, a significant change in the jaw and neck posture was appreciated. Further research is needed to interpret how these changes in posture affect horses’ health but it is suspected that a more natural (lower) feeding position is a better option.

Apples Never Fall THE newest book by Liane Moriarty, Apples Never Fall (Pan Macmillan Australia), is contemporary family drama at its best. The Delaney family have always been the envy of their community; Joy and Stan, former tennis coaches now in their 60s, continue to win tournaments after all these years. Their four adult children have left home to pursue careers of their own, and with the sale of the family business, Joy and Stan are looking forward to a happy
and fulfilling retirement. But now Joy has disappeared without a trace. Stan appears to be in denial, which doesn’t sound good to the police investigating Joy’s disappearance. The children, each harbouring misgivings of their own, have been living with the unspoken disappointment of their parents - not one of their children flourished in the tennis world as expected. Now they are reassessing the lives of their parents with increas-
ing apprehension; were they really as happy as they seemed? Could Stan be hiding something? And who was the stranger Joy and Stan harboured in their home the year before - could she have something to do with Joy’s disappearance? Picking away at the past dredges up all sorts of secrets, and like all families, the Delaneys are not willing to have their petty jealousies laid bare. A fabulous read.

Pizzini Wines 2021 Arneis THIS year the change in the seasons from winter to spring seemed to coincide perfectly with the calendar, the air warming and the sun beginning to shine right on September 1. The garden is coming to life and blossoming, the citrus trees are hanging on to masses of ripe fruit and the magpie swoops me every time I try to pick them. He started early this year and I can hear the squawking chicks although they are yet to make an appearance, but I’m hoping it won’t be much longer before he gives up on guard duty. It’s annoying, but also reassuring during times like these, reminding me again that the world is bigger than all of us, it keeps turning not matter what we do, and brighter days lie ahead. I’m embracing the change with a refreshed, lighter menu and a bottle of Pizzini Arneis. Lean pork steaks grilled on the barbecue and served with an avocado salad are lovely with a white wine variety like this. The Pizzini Arneis has an extra light, golden colour and an inviting fruity and sweet floral perfume. But it’s wonderfully crisp and dry, with crunchy pear and the

Stress and your body tangy sensation of lime. Serve just lightly chilled and enjoy its refreshing quality, while also taking in the resonant nuttiness which stays with you and works well with the avocado. Like that magpie, this Arneis is another little rascal I look forward to welcoming in spring.
PRICE: About $24 a bottle.

WE all have our own definitions of stress. We have all experienced stress, and in times like these, it’s probably really easy for you to list your top five stressors. Stress can be anything that is happening to you, around you, inside you, or even only in your brain. Stress can impact us in many ways, but today we will concentrate on how stress might look from a physical perspective. Are you having trouble eating? When we’re stressed, we tend to block out the messages our bodies are sending us, even if we don’t mean to. This could turn into a lack of appetite, not feeling hungry, not remembering when you last ate, not noticing the grumbling tummy, or even not eating at all. This could result in eating too much, meaning more meals, bigger meals and more snacking. Try and remember to eat regular meals, focus on fresh (local if you can) foods that fuel your body and brain. Remember, the fresher the food on
your plate looks, the better is usually is for you. Are you having trouble calming down? When we’re stressed, our body can get stuck in overdrive. Overthinking, overdoing, overreacting to things that normally wouldn’t produce such a strong response for you. The key to calming down your body and your mind is in your breath. Notice when you’re having trouble calming yourself and notice your breathing. When you bring your attention to your breath, try to slow it down. Long, slow inhales and long, slow exhales. Having enough oxygen flow around our bodies helps all of our regulatory systems work in sync, which helps us feel better. Are you having trouble staying physically well? Coughs and colds might happen more often, might stay around longer, or might turn into something more
dangerous like pneumonia. Our immune response is lowered when we’re stressed, so we don’t have the ability to fight off bugs and viruses like we normally would. You might have heard this information before, but the best way to stay physically well when you’re stressed are the ways we’re all avoiding COVID. Stay home and get tested if you’re sick, see your doctor if things are getting worse, wash your hands regularly and maintain good general hygiene, and try to limit the contact you have with people who are, or might be feeling unwell. Look after yourselves, and each other. We will get through this, together. Ms Chubb said she brought to the role experience in advocacy, particularly at a government level, and was excited about working with the board, as part of an organisation with a strong reputation in the community. With a new purpose-built base being constructed and a presence in Wangaratta’s recently-opened Orange Door network hub, as well as development of its new strategic plan, she said there was plenty happening for the organisation - including challenges posed by the COVID-19 situation. “When the community is facing a situation like the pandemic, home is not safe for everybody,” she said. “That will have long-term impacts and the demand for services will increase.” She said this would bring a renewed focus on the need to recruit staff to the region. Ms Chubb said while it may be uncomfortable for the community to think about issues like family violence and sexual assault, CAV was doing incredible work in this space locally. “They make a real difference to people’s

new board members in coming months, and raising the profile of the organisation. “I think CAV has to be a service people know of,” she said. “Unfortunately, we know there are high levels of family violence and sexual assault in our region, and CAV is a free service people can access at any time - 24/7. “We also recently received our rainbow tick, so people in the LGBTIQ+ community can be assured to be welcome and receive LGBTIQ-inclusive quality care. “There is much more work to be done in this space, including early intervention and raising awareness, and there is tremendous leadership at CAV, with a strong commitment to victim/survivors.” Dr Modderman said people who have experience with governance and leading change were invited to apply for a current CAV board vacancy, to help drive the strategic outcomes for CAV’s future direction, and could contact the organisation via email, admin@cav.org.au For more information about CAV’s services, phone 5722 2203 or visit the website www.centreagainstviolence.org.au

TECH & SCIENCE
with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ AL GORE’S RHYTHM: As confusing as the term may be, I can assure you it has nothing to do with Al Gore’s ability to dance.
What are algorithms, and what do they do, exactly? IN an era of social media, self-driving cars, smart-phones, apps, artificial intelligence and machine learning, there’s one term that gets bandied around a lot - algorithms. If you’ve been following technology news you’ll know that algorithms play a role in virtually everything we do online - from using programs at work, to sharing posts on Facebook, to consuming media on sites like Youtube. But what are algorithms, and how do they work? In this article I thought we’d take a look at these mysterious things that have come to govern many aspects of our lives, and discuss some of the con-
troversy surrounding them. We live in a world where computers are only vaguely understood, even though they permeate every moment of our lives. But there is one area of computer science where anyone can understand the basics of what’s going on. That area of computer science is called programming. Programming isn’t glamorous work, but it’s the foundation of all computer software, from Microsoft Office to automated phone callers. And even if your knowledge of programming stems solely from bad 1980s and 90s films, you probably don’t need any-
one to explain to you what a programmer does. A programmer writes code for a computer, and the computer follows the instruction of that code to perform tasks or solve problems. Well, in the world of computer science, an algorithm is just a fancy word for code. Any set of instructions that tells a computer how to solve problems is an algorithm, even if the task is super easy. When you turn on your computer, it follows a set of “how to turn on” instructions. That’s an algorithm at work. When a NASA computer uses raw radio wave data to render a photograph of outer
space, that’s also an algorithm at work. The word “algorithm” can be used to describe any set of instructions, even outside the realm of computing. For example, your method for sorting cutlery in a drawer is an algorithm, as is the way you mow your lawn. The controversy surrounding algorithms Speech-to-text generally uses machine learning, but no one talks about the speechto-text “algorithm” because there is an objectively correct answer every human can instantly recognise. No one cares about “how” the computer figures out what
you said or whether it’s machine learning or not. We just care whether the machine got the right answer. But other applications of machine learning don’t have the benefit of having a “right” answer. That’s why algorithms have become a regular subject of conversation in the media. An algorithm for sorting a list alphabetically is just a way of accomplishing a defined task. But an algorithm like Google’s for somehow “ranking the best websites for a search” or YouTube’s for “recommending the best video” is much vaguer and doesn’t accomplish a defined task. People can debate whether
that algorithm is producing the results it should, and people will have different opinions on that. But, with our alphabetical sorting example, everyone can agree that the list ends up sorted alphabetically as it should. There’s no controversy. But, the general public doesn’t use the word “algorithm” as a catchall term for computer code. In fact, most people assume that there’s a difference between a computer code and an algorithm—but there isn’t. Because of the word “algorithm’s” association with machine learning, its meaning has become foggy, yet its usage has grown more specific.
