Listening ear, caring heart By SIMONE KERWIN
HAVING grown up as the son of an Anglican priest, it took Howard Beard some time away from the church before he was called back - and eventually became a pastor himself. Now leader of the parish which takes in Zion Wangaratta and Holy Trinity Benalla Lutheran churches, Rev Howard said it was after marrying and starting a family with wife Janet that he renewed his connection. “When it came time to get my children baptised, I walked into the church and I never walked out,” he said. Finding that the Gospel messages rang true and resonated with him, Rev Howard spent four years with the Cornerstone community in Renmark, South Australia before gravitating to the Lutheran church and becoming a pastor in 2000. Through his ministry, the Beards spent four years in north-west Melbourne (Melton/Sunbury/St Albans), then moved to South Australia, with four years in Port Augusta and six and a half years in the Cummins-Tumby Bay area before relocating to Victoria again.

Heart murmurs in pets HEART disease, as with people, is a very common problem in dogs, especially as they get older. Most dogs with heart disease will not show any outward signs and therefore is most commonly diagnosed at your yearly vet visit. Your veterinarian will listen to your pets’ heart routinely at each visit and can detect heart murmurs when listening to the chest. A heart murmur is a whooshing sound of the heart replacing the normal heartbeat sound due to abnormal blood flow through the heart. This can be due to a variety of different structural issues including, narrow vessels, valve problems, holes in the heart, and infections. Heart murmurs are not always a problem. Many heart murmurs are benign and dogs can live their entire life with no symptoms. Other murmurs can be quite serious and can even be fatal quite quickly. Differentiating benign and aggressive heart murmurs can be done by a series of radiographs or a heart ultrasound. These diagnostics can also allow your veterinarian to determine the structural issue with the heart and determine prognosis associated with the condition. Mitral valve disease is the most
with Felix DeNatris BvSc, Wangaratta Veterinary Clinic common cause of murmurs in dogs. These murmurs are caused by degeneration of the mitral valve in the heart. This degeneration leads to a leaking in the valves causing blood to flow in the wrong direction and leads to less blood pumping around the body. To compensate for this, the heart pumps harder and gets bigger. This occurs for a period until the heart cannot get bigger. When this happens you might notice weakness, lethargy, exercise intolerance, coughing, collapse, difficulty breathing, or fluid in the abdomen in your pet. If these signs occur then it is best to see your vet about starting on medication. Another way to determine whether the dog needs treatment or not can be determined by counting a sleeping respiratory rate. This is done at home while your pet sleeps. If the breathing rate has increased over 30 breaths, then it is time to start medications, as this is a reliable indicator that the heart is no longer compensating, and the animal has progressed to congestive heart failure.

The hidden value of weeds THE North East has many hidden ‘weed walks’ to delight every kind of DIY herbalist. Go for a walk in any paddock or down any road and you will see many medicinal plants available at your doorstep. Most likely you are already famil-
iar with these plants but had no idea of abundance of minerals and healing powers that they can give you. Most likely you know them only as weeds. We are very quick to criticise weeds - to spray them or dig them up - but these guys are also pretty
powerful medicines. You must make sure the plants you are going to use as your medicine have not been sprayed. It is also important to ensure you have the correct species of plant. Here is a table of some you can easily grow in your own gardens.
Plant
Part Used
Preparation
Medicinal Action
Stinging-Nettle - Urtica diorca
Leaves
*Once heated the sting is deactivated. Herbal tea: chop 2-3 leaves and place in a cup of hot water. Let it steep for 5-10 minutes then drink Nettle pie: Use any recipe for spinach pie, but substitute half the spinach for fresh nettles.
High in minerals and iron, detoxifying, building and anti-inflammatory. Used for skin conditions, poor iron absorption.
Fennel Foeniculum vulgare
Seeds
Can be used in combination with caraway seeds, chamomile or peppermint tea. As a food: the fennel bulb, eaten raw will help reduce gut spasms associated with trapped wind, as will chewing the seeds.
Calms digestion (wind, bloating, spasm, colic), stimulates appetite and moves mucous
Chickweed Stellaria media
Flowering tops and leaves
Poultice: Crush the leaves to make a paste. Place crushed leaves onto itchy skin and leave for 5-10 minutes. Apply the poultice 3x. Juiced: Juice ½ an apple, 1 cup of chickweed, ½ beetroot and 1 carrot.
The juice is a tonic and was traditionally used to detoxify at the beginning of spring. The poultice or cream of chickweeds helps to relieve dry itchy infected skin.
Dandelion Taraxacum officinalis
Roots and leaves
Coffee: Dig out the plant and find the roots. Take the roots inside and give them a rinse. Chop into small pieces. Roast them in the oven until dark in colour. Put them into a tea strainer in a mug of hot water and serve with a little honey. Tea: rinse some leaves and chop them. Place in a tea strainer in a cup of hot water and let them steep for 5 minutes.
The coffee stimulates the liver, improves bile flow to reduce constipation. The tea leaves have a diuretic action. They are also very high in potassium and other minerals.
Comfrey Symphytum officinalis
Leaves
Poultice: Crush the leaves to make a paste. Place crushed leaves onto itchy skin and leave for 5-10 minutes. Apply the poultice 3x.

YOUR HEALTH Pizzini Wines 2020 Rosetta
ONE of the things I love about salmon is its versatility and how the way it is as a fried fillet of fish is entirely different to what it is when it is smoked, cured or raw. While it’s amazing when the skin is grilled until crispy, almost becoming fish crackle, it’s universally loved when it’s smoked and on a bagel, and is hard to beat when raw over sushi rice. Lately we’ve been experimenting with different cuts of salmon fillet and while the belly can be quiet gelatinous, nearer the tail seems to have a sweeter, denser texture I enjoy more. However it comes, it really works well with a Rosé style like Pizzini Wines Rosetta. And it’s not just about the colour - which happens to be salmon pink. This Rosé is 80 per cent Sangiovese with 20 per cent Nebbiolo and while it’s fruity, with quite a fresh and peppy raspberry aroma, it’s no lightweight. There’s substance there; with a dry palate and a crisp and savoury, cherry and berry fruit flavour which stands up to the richness of fatty salmon. It still has a refreshing quality and clean acidity which works
with Anita McPherson
well other foods too like chicken, pork or spicy antipasto, but is also great to share before the meal even starts. Apparently a slightly larger parcel of Nebbiolo was added, compared to the previous vintage, which is what helps create the longer finish and creamier kind of texture. Whatever it is, I’m happy to sit back and enjoy it, every which way it comes. About $19.
This Day in History, 1935 PARKINSON’S schedule for Day Two of the Great Barrow push relied on reaching Myrtleford. Groups of people were by now clustering by the roadside along the way to catch a glimpse of the pair - Parkinson, bearing the weight of the barrow on shoulder straps, and Evans seated in the barrow, which sported a rubber tyre specially made by Dunlop. Rules for the contest had been published days before. Evans could leave the barrow whenever it stopped, but after they started to climb the mountain, Evans had to remain in the barrow for at least five minutes after each stop was called, and remain in the barrow at all times when it was being pushed, whether it rained, hailed or snowed.
with Christos Miliankos NORTH EAST NATUROPATHIC GROUP ◆ HEALTHY EATING: When your bowels are regular, you feel better, look good and your mood is improved. PHOTO: Shutterstock
Healthy bowels
WHILE this might not be the most popular topic, it is a very important one. Your stools can tell you a lot about your health and play a big role in how you feel day to day. Your bowels perform one of the most important roles - removing waste from your body. To do this effectively, your body needs to be well hydrated and you should be eating a balanced diet with prebiotic fibre. So what is regular anyway? When your bowels are working effectively, you should have one to two bowel movements a day. If you are not having one bowel movement a day, then you can benefit from a natural laxative product and a
pro-biotic to help you get regular. When our bowels are regular, our body is performing at its best. We feel good, we look good and our mood is improved. By being regular, we are ensuring that the waste products are being removed from the body. When our body isn’t regular, you can begin to feel unwell, sluggish and bloated and it will begin to affect both mood and sleep. How to get regular: Take a laxative - if you are finding yourself constipated it’s best to be prescribed a laxative by your Practitioner or doctor. Some simple natural remedies are prunes, dried figs and powdered Magnesium supplements can help.
Take a probiotic - a probiotic is important to help balance the gut and help produce good bacteria for better bowel movement. It is best to avoid probiotics that are high in sugar. Drink lots of water - water plays a big part in healthy bowels. The body needs water to assist in lubrication and removal of waste. If you are constipated, increasing your water consumption can assist, but also be wary of drinking too much water without increasing your electrolytes and other nutrients. For more information or to have a personalised bowel program call Christos Miliankos at the NE Naturopathic Group (Wang Wellness Centre) on (03) 5798 3344.

know people - one of the main things I’m strong on is visitation, and if that’s not possible due to restrictions, well. there’s always the telephone. “You just want to let people know you’re there and care for them, and hopefully somewhere along the line, people who are used to receiving Holy Communion will want to come back to church. “One of the things all denominations are struggling with is the ‘missing generations’, and attracting younger people, but I think if you build a relationship, you’ve got a chance.” Here for what he expects to be “three years, and then let’s see what happens”, Rev Howard encouraged anyone interested to come along to services at Zion Wangaratta or Holy Trinity Benalla, where a live band forms part of the weekly services. with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ READY AND WAITING: Snow resorts are waiting for visitors this season in line with COVID-safe restrictions. PHOTO: Falls Creek/Alice Kuersch
Kicking off the snow season at Mt Buffalo and Falls Creek FALLS Creek already has a good dusting of snow having received 17cm late last week bringing the total to around 20cm. To make the most of your day/ week/weekend away, purchase your resort entry permits, lift tickets and rentals ahead where you can. This will get you on the slopes quicker and avoiding the queues. The resort is operating under a COVID safe plan as well as the Victorian Government health measures in place for regional Victoria. Guests need to physically distance in lift and bus queues, sanitise, wear a mask indoors, check-in and respect that these measures are in place so a full and healthy season can be had this year. This winter at Mt Buffalo, you’ll find two managed toboggan and snow play areas - Dingo Dell and Cresta Valley. Please note: only plastic moulded toboggans are allowed in the patrolled areas with homemade items like car inner-tubes and wheelbarrow buckets or
scooter/bike style devices not permitted. Cresta Valley also offers three groomed ski trails plus multiple ungroomed options for the more adventurous and well prepared. The Mt Buffalo plateau offers a blank canvas of opportunities for those wishing to explore on skis. There will be number of marked Snow Shoe routes at Dingo Dell, Cresta and Cathedral Saddle. Camping is only permitted in three designated sites: Rocky Creek, Mt McLeod and Lake Catani. For all the latest information on the mountains and all COVID safe requirements visit: Falls Creek: fallscreek.com.au Mt Hotham: hotham.com.au Mt Buffalo: visitmountbuffalo.com.au Mt Buller: mtbuller.com.au
◆ BIG SHOES TO FILL: The Leshan Giant Buddha was constructed by monk Hai Tong with the help of masons and fellw monks. Unfrotunately, the statues was not completed before Hai Tong’s passing.
Ancient marvels of engineering THROUGHOUT history, certain individuals and civilisations have constructed absolutely wonderous feats of engineering - often of religious significance. Often precisely how these people managed to build these towering monuments without modern tools leave historians and architects scratching their heads. This week, I thought we’d take a look at some of the slightly less famous examples. Saksaywaman in Peru Carved entirely out of stone by monk Hai Tong with the aim of appeasing water spirits that were thought to be responsible for boat accidents, the Leshan Buddha is by far the largest Buddha statue in the world. It is located east of Leshan City in the Chinese province of Sichuan and sits at the point where the Dadu River, Qingyi River, and Min River converge. Measuring 232 feet tall with 92-foot wide shoulders, this Buddha statue was completed in 803 CE and it is quite imposing even by today’s standards. The statue features 1,021 intricately coiled buns that have been carefully integrated into its head that act as a hidden drainage system that allows rainwater to flow to the ground without damaging the statue. The drainage system also runs through other parts of the statue including its ears and arms.

Teotihuacan in Mexico Besides Egypt, Teotihuacan, which is located northeast of Mexico City, is home to some of the largest pyramid-like structures in the world. These structures are built on a site that was first inhabited around 100 BCE by an ancient civilization that reached its peak in 450 CE before declining around the 8th and 9th centuries. Teotihuacan’s pyramids once formed an urban metropolis that spanned 22 miles and was home to approximately
200,000 inhabitants. Similar to their egyptian counterparts, the pyramid city was built such that its grid aligned properly with key geographic, geodetic, and celestial points that were considered important at the time. For instance, the city’s east-west axis aligned with a sunset point in the horizon that coincided with the beginning of the Mesoamerican calendar. In addition, the city’s north-south axis was aligned with the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, as well as the Sun and Moon pyramids. El Mirador in Guatemala El Mirador is the largest pyramidal structure in the world by volume and the largest of five Pre-Classical Mayan cities identified to date. It is located inside the Mirador-Rio Azul National Park and it was completed in 300 BCE. Archeologists and historians who have studied the site reckon that the architectural design and culture proves that the Mayan civilization dates back 1,000 years earlier than thought. The entire site spans 500,000 acres and consists of a 10 square mile civic center and 35 triadic pyramids. Out of these pyramids, the largest - La Danta - is 230 feet tall and it has a volume of 2,800,000 cubic metres. The site also has remains of an elaborate transport network that is billed to have been the world’s first highway system.
