Sowing seeds for generations to come

THERE’S more to the ‘Green Thumbs of Wooragee’ long time volunteer gardener, Owen Gemmill, than meets the eye. The 90-year-old is behind the success of many wins and accolades for Wooragee Primary School’s award-winning sustainability garden programs including the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen. Owen’s working life began as a French polisher before he switched to a teaching career which spanned close to three decades before his retirement. “After several years of French polishing I went back to school to gain further qualifications and undertook an art and design diploma at the Royal Melbourne Technical College, affectionately known in those days as ‘Melbourne Tech’,” Owen said. A two year stint in industry as part of a student teacher’s certificate training program to gain practical experience, Owen worked at GTV 9 using his art and design skills before heading to teachers’ training college for 12 months. “At GTV 9 I was a modeller making three-dimensional props and scenery for stage shows and films,” he said. For Owen, teaching was a step in the right direction and for the next 29 years he taught at technical colleges in Victoria before the education providers evolved into TAFE, and he found himself in the state’s North East. “In those days, year six students had a choice of going to a technical school or a high school,” he said. “I taught art and design subjects, and for 20 out of those 29 years, I was a department head. “I have a passion for seeing students thrive and I loved being in the classroom, watching students develop and grow - I regard teaching as sowing seeds. “It’s when you meet students later on in life as adults that you can measure success in what you taught them and how they have progressed in their own fields.”

Bloat in cattle With Amy Brown, BVCs, Wangaratta Veterinary Clinic BLOAT is a relatively common cause of sudden death in cattle, which results from an inability of the cow to eructate (burp) gas from the rumen. There are two types of bloat; gassy bloat and frothy bloat. Gassy bloat is less common and results from an obstruction preventing the release of gas from the rumen (commonly an ingested foreign body such as a potato or an apple). Frothy bloat is more common, and results from the build up of stable foam in the rumen, which traps gas within. Frothy bloat occurs frequently when cattle are fed lush, immature, rapidly growing pasture such as clover or legumes. Cattle affected with bloat may initially show signs of abdominal pain such as bellowing, restless behaviour and kicking at their flanks, however the process progresses quite quickly to left sided abdominal distension, breathing difficulty, drooling and

with Amy Brown, BVCs, Wangaratta Veterinary Clinic tongue protrusion. If relief isn’t provided promptly, animals can die within 15 minutes due to cardiac or respiratory failure. Treatment of bloat is aimed at giving the gas an escape route. Depending upon the presentation, this may involve one or more of the following; passage of a stomach tube, a trochar placed directly into the rumen and/or administration of anti-foaming agents orally. In cases of frothy bloat, all animals should be removed from the pasture and fed a high fibre diet. Prevention may be achieved by limiting access to potential foreign body obstructions, avoiding high risk pastures and/or using ongoing bloat control such as anti-foaming agents, detergents or rumen fermentation modifiers.

Healing properties of dandelions TARAXACUM officinale or dandelion comes from the Greek word meaning ‘disorder’ and ‘remedy’, and boy does dandelion have healing powers that have been valued for centuries. Dandelion is a much-maligned common weed that is found in lawns across the North East. It is easily identified by its sharp ‘lion’s’ toothed leaves that angle backwards and come from the centre of the plant. Its flowering stems are hollow and can sometimes be tinged with red. They are smooth and shiny and full of a milky juice that seeps from them when broken. Each stalk produces an individual bright yellow daisy-like flower with its outer florets whose underside is purplish grey. It’s the young spring leaves that we as herbalists search for to add to salads and stir fries to add a nutrient dense punch. Removing dandelion can be a cumbersome and laborious task for the home gardener. Any piece of the deep tap root of dandelion that is left behind can reproduce a new plant and the lightweight of the seed head can see it spread via the wind for many kilometres. Dandelions thrive in any condi-

tion except the extreme heat and are easily sown by seed in the home herbalist’s garden during early spring to the end of summer. Dandelion tea can simply and easily be made by picking some leaves and steeping in boiling water with a lid on for 5 minutes and straining to drink. It aids in digestion, chronic longstanding aches and pains and relieves the kidney and liver of toxins and waste, it’s also packed with vitamins and minerals. Dandelion root can be washed, dried, ground and roasted to make an alternative to coffee. This naturally decaffeinated version is a great option for those who don’t do well with the buzz that caffeine gives. As always, herbal medicine is a gentle but very effective tool for your health and you should always ensure you have the right cultivar and consult a trained herbalist prior to beginning any form of herbal medicine, especially if you are taking medication. For a refreshing non-alcoholic cocktail try this dandelion and strawberry shrub: * 2 cups strawberries (fresh or frozen) * 1/2 cup fresh dandelion roots, chopped (or 1/4 cup dried dande-

lion roots) * 2 tablespoons fresh ginger, minced * 1 cup balsamic vinegar * 1 cup apple cider vinegar (or white wine vinegar) * 1/2 cup honey (or more to taste) To make: Chop the strawberries. Add them to a sterilized jar. Using a wooden spoon, slightly crush the strawberries. Add the dandelion roots, ginger, vinegars and honey to the jar. Stir well. Cover with a non-reactive lid: plastic, glass, or a piece of parchment or waxed paper in between the metal lid and the shrub (vinegar will corrode a metal canning jar lid and destroy the drink). Let this infuse for a week in the fridge. Shake it gently every day. Strain when done. To serve: Add one to two tablespoons of the shrub to a cup of water, sparkling water, soda, or a cocktail. The drink should taste sour and sweet, with the aromatics of strawberries and a subtle zing of ginger. Yield: two and a half cups. Store in the refrigerator in a jar with a non-reactive lid. It should last for 6 months. For those who enjoy their cocktails with alcohol, add 60ml of liquor with 23ml of shrub in a Collins or highball glass and top with soda.

YOUR HEALTH Wood Park Wines

Wild’s Gully Tempranillo 2019 IT is turning out to be another good year for berries, with both the raspberries and loganberries having not only plenty of lush growth but loads of fruit. While the raspberries put out a manageable crop in early December, there is a second flush in the late summer of super sweet fruit that means jam making is also possible. The loganberries are never quite as sweet and the best fruits are the ones which are shaded from the scalding afternoon sun, but they have a wild and savoury quality I also really enjoy. It reminds me a little of the earthiness, even the hint of tobacco, you can sometimes find in the Spanish wine variety Tempranillo. Wild’s Gully Tempranillo is made from grapes grown at Wood Park Wine’s vineyard at Kneebones Gap in the King Valley wine region and they say it was an excellent year for the varietal. The aroma will certainly appeal to the berry lovers - intense with ripe, wild berry fruits. When it comes to the flavour the purple-red wine leans more to that earthy, loganberry and even cherry-like flavour, with hints of cedar and spicy tobacco from its time in French Oak. It’s a terrific choice for the table

This Day in History, 1857 BEECHWORTH drinkers were surprised and delighted when on this day three local hotels offered the luxury of ice with their drinks. The ice was from North America, where the lakes were frozen for the winter, and large quantities could be sawn up and shipped to Australian as ballast, packed in straw. To transport the ice from Melbourne, a fast horsedrawn wagon was used. It came to be known as the Express Wagon, or Ice Wagon.

CHRISTMAS should be a time of fun, right? A time to spend with family and to reflect on the year we’ve had. A time to enjoy food and drinks then sit on the couch playing board games because you can’t move or play backyard cricket with the cousins. It’s also a time of seemingly never ending deadlines like trying to madly clean the house or stuff everything in a cupboard before Christmas drinks with the neighbours. It can be such a happy time but I, like many others, haven’t always loved Christmas. Christmas for some people can be one of the most stressful times of the year and can hugely affect your health. There are people out there who have just lost a loved one, or lost a loved one around Christmas time, or who can’t bear to celebrate without their loved one. Others are hungry and when there are no ‘extras’ at Christmas, it can come as

a stark reminder of what you don’t have that everyone else seemingly does have. Others are lonely or battling mental illness and putting on a smiley face or just turning up to Christmas festivities takes all their emotional energy. We don’t always know what people are going through so next time you’re shopping for presents or ordering a Christmas turkey, remember that a simple smile, politeness and a heartfelt ‘Merry Christmas’ can make a huge difference to people’s days. Let me tell you my own story. I didn’t grow up with a great love of Christmas, but my first wife Kylie simply adored it. Kylie died 21 years ago of brain tumours but her love of Christmas rubbed off on me - I seemed to embrace it with gusto and passion. On December 1 we always got the tree decorated, handwrote cards and spent time with lots of groups of friends

having a ‘jolly good time’ as carols played in the house. However, the first Christmas after Kylie died was terribly hard - I knew I couldn’t stay in Australia so I went to visit my grandparents in Greece. It was hard but the change of scenery was what I needed at the time. Christmas is a time most people try to spend time with family, but for some, seeing families together when they’re alone can be heart wrenching and terribly lonely. So, this Christmas spare a thought for others, try to envisage what walking in their shoes would be like and don’t assume they are happy, have spare money, have been invited to a family lunch or have any family at all. Practice random acts of kindness; volunteer, buy lunch for a homeless person - it can make a huge difference to someone’s day. Have a jolly good Christmas and spread some love.

Sowing seeds for generations to come Ŷ

From page 1

Beginning his teaching career at what was formally known as Richmond Technical College, followed by one in Wonthaggi, Owen transferred to a rapidly expanding Wodonga Technical School. Growing seeds of a different kind began after Owen, along with his wife Robyn, retired to their bush block in Wooragee where the couple has lived for more than 30 years. Their granddaughter started at Wooragee Primary School in 2008 and the couple stepped in to help the school who, at the time, didn’t have a large body of parents to draw upon to help out. Owen ‘dug in’ using his green thumb to develop the gardens and became head gardener, staying on even after

his granddaughter progressed to high school. He continues to teach students to plant, grow and harvest fruit and vegetables and has now worked at the school for more than a decade. With Owen’s help, the school has flown high with a number of wins in Sustainability Victoria’s Garden Regional and Sustainability Awards across various categories every year from 2014 to 2019 except for 2018, and when the school won the highest award - the Kevin Heine’s Perpetual Award - in 2015. Owen also played an instrumental part in the school recently becoming a five star ResourceSmart School. “It’s a real shot in the arm for a small school,” Owen said. “Teaching sustainability

principles are instilled for life and I get the greatest level of satisfaction at harvesting time when the kids see the rewards from tending the vege patches and gardens. “They see the association when they pick the fruit and veggies and feel ownership with comments like ‘I helped plant this’ as they harvest the results of their efforts. “The look of satisfaction and smiles on their little faces makes it all worthwhile. “A generation gap doesn’t exist at the school, the kids just accept you whatever your age and I think that’s a wonderful thing. “I look forward to the time at school and enjoy every moment here with these kids, and I think it’s what keeps me going.”

Owen was also named the 2017 Beechworth district Achiever of the Year at Australia Day celebrations held at the Town Hall gardens in recognition of his contributions to Landcare, sustainability and the development of Wooragee Primary School’s kitchen garden. In October this year, students and staff celebrated Owen’s 90th birthday with an announcement that the school’s garden would be known as ‘Owen’s Garden’ and presented him with a photo album of his work with the children over the years. “Wooragee is a lovely community - there’s a good spirit here and sense of togetherness. “I think the North East is the pick of Victoria to live in.

GONE FISHING

nemedia.com.au

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au WORTH THE TRIP: Tom Short travelled from Wollongong to go fishing in Wangaratta and loved it. Tom is a great fisherman and will no doubt be tormenting fish for many years to come.

Fish from all angles THIS is the best time of the year from the perspective of a fishing journalist with fishing reports coming in from every direction! Firstly, not a report, but great news. Lake Buffalo Was stocked with 50,000 Murray cod fingerlings during the week which should enhance the already great Murray cod fishing in the lake. I have had reports of Murray cod being caught there this last week. I consider Lake Buffalo to be one of the more under recognised Murray cod fisheries in the state. Glenn and Tom Short travelled all the way to Wangaratta from Wollongong just to go Murray cod fishing this week. They loved Wangaratta in general and were very impressed with the fishing. Twelve year old Tom managed to catch his first ever Murray cod while fishing behind the showgrounds in Wangaratta, and went on to catch three for the few days they were here. Tom caught his cod on cheese and the Compleat Angler bait “Chicken’s Hit”. I fished locally a few times during the week with bait and lures, including a kayak fishing session

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA on the Lower Ovens River where I found the cod fishing has been biting OK, but not red hot. I have caught enough cod to keep me interested but there has been lengthy periods between fish. On Wednesday morning I went to Lake Hume fishing from the bank at Ebden. I was wet wading around the edges of the alake, casting soft plastics for redfin. I managed to catch around 20 small redfin, with most fish being caught on the Strike Tiger bug soft plastic in Lava Lime colour. Five minutes before typing this report I received a report of some good cod and yellowbelly fishing at Lake Nillahcootie during the week. So Nillahcootie is still worth fishing at the moment.

◆ HALF-LIFE: As with many things, the discovery of radiation was largely accidental, and led to one of the most infamous deaths attributed to scientific experimentation - that of Madam Curie.

The history of radiation THIS week, I thought we’d take a look at the history of radiation - the people involved in it’s discovery and the experiments they performed. The modern understanding of ionizing radiation got its start in 1895 with Wilhelm Röntgen. In the process of conducting various experiments in applying currents to different vacuum tubes, he discovered that, despite covering one in a screen to block light, there seemed to be rays penetrating through to react with a barium solution on a screen he’d placed nearby. After several experiments, including taking the first photo (of his wife’s hand and skeletal structure) with the new rays, he named them “X-Rays” temporarily as a designation of something unknown, and the name simply stuck. This discovery was followed in 1896 by Henri Becquerel’s discovery that uranium salts gave off similar rays naturally. Although it was Henri Becquerel who discovered the phenomenon, it was his doctoral student, Marie Curie, who named it - radioactivity. She would go on to do much more pioneering work with radioactive materials, including the discovery of additional radioactive elements: thorium, polonium, and radium. She was awarded the Nobel Prize

twice, once alongside Henri Becquerel and her husband Pierre in Physics for their work with radioactivity, and again years later in Chemistry for her discovery of radium and polonium. She also conducted pioneering work in radiology, developing and deploying mobile X-ray machines for the battlefields of World War I. She died in 1934 of aplastic anemia, probably developed from extended exposure to various radioactive materials, the dangers of which were only really understood long after most of her exposure had occurred. In fact, many of her papers are still highly radioactive and many are considered unsafe to handle. Radium Watch Dial Painters One of the first major events to highlight the dangers of ionizing radiation was the case of the “Radium Girls,” workers whose job it was to paint watch dials with radium. Though there was enough suspicion of the effects of ionizing radiation for the management of the company to take precautions, they offered none to the actual workers painting the watch dials. Many of them would lick their brushes to properly shape them. Since the human body treats radium as calcium, it was then deposited in the bones and led to radiation sickness.

Newsmedia Advertising Works, Reach more people more often

It is unknown how many died from radiation exposure. The public interest and the availability of a large sample set (up to 4000 people were employed at dial painters over the years) led to the first long-term study of radiation exposure. Finally ending in 1993, it provided a wealth of information on the long-term effect of radiation exposure. The Manhattan Project & The Cold War The Manhattan Project, the crash study undertaken during World War II to develop the first atomic bomb, led directly the second long term study of the effects of long-term radiation exposure, namely the study of the survivors of the bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The bombings, which killed more than 150,000 between them (with some estimates putting the total at closer to 245,000 or more), also left more than 600,000 survivors (hibakusha, literally “explosion affected people”), many who have been studied in the years since. Among the findings was that there does not appear to have been an increase of birth defects in those that survived the blasts. There have been, however, about 1900 cancer deaths that can be directly attributable to the bombings.
