◆ READY TO FIRE: 84 year old shooter Marge Clarke shooting bench rest .22. PHOTO: Belinda Harrison
By NATHAN DE VRIES MARGE Clarke has spent her 84 years of life being active, whether she’s doing aerobics, fun runs, fishing or especially shooting. Born in 1936, Marge was shooting from a young age. “I started when I was a teenager, I used to go out with my then-boyfriend shooting rabbits around Epping and all around
that area,” she said. “I’ve always had a rifle on the farm, you’d always need one. “When my husband Tom and I moved to Porepunkah in 1960 we took up shooting .303, and we joined the rifle club up there in Bright. “That was more than 50 years ago.” Marge was pregnant with her fourth child at the time, and when she couldn’t lie down on
her belly to shoot anymore, she walked away from the sport for good. After raising their four children, Marge and her husband decided to adventure along the east coast of Australia with a caravan. Together they went as far south as Wilson’s Promontory and as far north as Cape York, exploring and being active for as long as they could.
Marge recalls the day they visited Uluru, the wind had stopped anyone from climbing. “It was closed so we walked all around it rather than climb on it,” she said. “Then when we got back to the spot, the wind had dropped so we were allowed to go up.” Marge was too tired by then so stayed at the bottom, but Tom went part way up before deciding he was too tired too.
After two and a half years with the caravan the pair settled in Queensland, but eventually Tom’s health started to deteriorate. “When my husband started getting ill, we decided to come back here to Victoria, closer to family,” she said. Sadly, Tom passed away 12 months ago, after 64 wonderful years together. “The husband and I have
had a very good life together; we’ve travelled around Australia,” Marge said. “I enjoy fishing and all those activities, I’ve done a lot of aerobics, a lot of fun runs; I just like sport in general.” After Marge moved to Wangaratta she wanted to do an activity, and looked through council for information on clubs and hobbies for senior citizens.

YOUR GARDEN
Oesophageal foreign bodies FOREIGN objects getting stuck in an animal’s oesophagus is something every vet will have to deal with, possibly several times in their careers. So, they are not common, but they are certainly not rare. They mostly occur in dogs, but cats are not immune. The most common breed to get something stuck in their oesophagus is the West Highland White Terrier. The most common objects to get stuck are bones and fishhooks. Dental chews are also implicated in a few cases. The clinical signs of a dog with an oesophageal obstruction are a combination of difficulty eating or anorexia, increased salivation, gagging, retching or regurgitation. Sometimes dogs may have issues breathing if the foreign body is impacting the lungs and chest cavity. Oesophageal foreign bodies occur at certain points of narrowing along the oesophagus. There are four main locations they occur – the cranial oesophageal sphincter, the thoracic inlet, above the heart base and at the caudal oesophageal sphincter. Diagnosis is usually achieved by radiography and sometimes contrast studies need to be performed. Most often surgery is needed to remove the object. This can be very simple if it can be
with Dr Meagan Lee, Ovens & Kiewa Veterinary Hospital reached easily and is not caught in the mucosa, or it can be extremely difficult involving thoracotomies and major surgery, often involving a specialist hospital. Sometimes the object can erode the wall of the oesophagus which can lead to an infection in the chest cavity. If the wall is damaged from the foreign object, a stricture can form during healing which can make ongoing issues with digestion likely. The complication rate for oesophageal foreign bodies is between 33 and 57 percent. The most common complications are stricture formation, oesophagitis, aspiration pneumonia, oesophageal diverticula, and death. The fatality rate is around five percent. As you can see, oesophageal foreign bodies are thankfully, not common, but they do occur and can be very difficult to treat and potentially be fatal. It is imperative if you are giving your dog/s bones or treats to make sure they chew them properly, instead of swallowing them whole. If you suspect your dog may have something stuck, then the sooner the object is removed the better the outcome is likely to be.

◆ IN BLOOM: The flowers of the Banksia serrata are prominent in summer and emerge from December to June. ◆ PROTECTED: (Inset) Deeply fissured bark protects epicormic buds from bushfire on a Banksia serrata.
The intriguing Banksia Serrata BANKSIA serrata is a conspicuous, intriguing and quintessentially Australian plant. There are several forms: a dense tall shrub up to 15 metres, and sometimes a small gnarled tree, a long-lived survivor of many bushfires. B. serrata is a near-coastal species growing from Cooloola, Qld, down to Wilsons Promontory, and also in north-western Tasmania. A low-growing form - B. serrata “Austraflora Pygmy Possum” originated from the south coast of New South Wales. B. serrata was the first banksia to be named in honour of Sir Joseph Banks, the first European who gathered the type-species in Botany Bay in 1770. The epithet ‘serrata’ refers to the saw-like margins of the leaves. There are approximately 173 species of Banksia endemic to Australia. B. serrata is slow-growing and long-lived. The timber is hard, reddish pink in colour and has been likened to
English Oak. The creamy grey/green flowers are large and conspicuous and emerge from December to June. Seed cones are retained on plants and, as with almost all banksia species, retain the seed in woody capsules until released by extreme heat. The Big Bad Banksia Men of May Gibbs’ Snugglepot and Cuddlepie were inspired by the enormous seed cones of Banksia serrata. This moderately hardy shrub adapts well to a range of welldrained soils. It tolerates extreme cold and humidity. Some pruning and shaping among green foliage will keep plants neat and tidy. Plants survive bushfire by resprouting from epicormic buds beneath thick, deeply fissured bark. This regrowth commences about a week after fire. Plants grow readily from seed. Extracting seed by simulated bushfire and thunderstorm works well.
With a bucket of cold water nearby, place cones with mature capsules in a hot fire until they are well alight but intact. Remove the cones (with tongs or a shovel) from the fire and plunge into cold water. When cooled, leave to dry in a warm place. Within a few days the seed capsules will open and the winged seeds can be extracted. Save the seeds and discard the woody seed receptacles. Plants grown from seed may take up to 10 years to flower. To retain a particular growth habit, plants can be grown from cuttings. Cuttings are slow to strike but will flower within two to three years. The combination of shiny green serrated leaves, textured grey, deeply fissured trunk, conspicuous light grey/green buds and light brown seed cones makes this very individual Australian a desirable feature for the home garden or perhaps a worthy subject for bonsai.

WINE TALK

YOUR HEALTH Lana Wines 2019 Pinot Grigio
IT is amazing to see the affect heavy rain can have on a garden in only a matter of hours. Even if the grass is Cornflake crunchy dry and virtually nonexistent, rain that soaks long and deep seems to almost instantly bring it back to life again and turn it the lightest shade of green. Within days the cows that gathered and bellowed every time you drove past in the tractor, calling out for hay, suddenly go quiet and wander away to graze on the new shoots. The sense of relief felt by the flora and fauna is palpable and combined with cooler evenings and early signs of dew, you just know everything is going to be alright. No matter how dusty and dry you get after mowing, a chilled glass of Pizzini Wines Lana Pinot Grigio is a stylish way to wet your whistle and revive the senses. It has a pale straw colour and the barest of green hues which remind me of the rain soaked grass. It has a bright, fruity aroma which sings with summer fruit like crisp Corella pear slices and white peaches. The flavour is crisp and bright
with Anita McPherson
too, with apple and pear fruit and some citrus acidity, making it palate cleansing at first, but then lingering with a pleasant, pear fruit aftertaste. I like it quite well chilled on its own but it’s also great with summer dishes like cheeses, bruschetta or a shellfish linguine. This is a wine designed to be enjoyed while young and fresh, but really, aren’t we all better that way? About $22.
This Day in History, 1983 THE Ash Wednesday bushfires dominated the news on this day in 1983, and many district people and fire units were away fighting the fires. In Wangaratta, the Ovens River had almost ceased to flow, and the Water Trust was considering introducing Stage 3 regulations. Glenrowan was desperate for water. The Fifteen Mile Creek had dried up, and without the Edwin Scott storage, built a few years earlier, Glenrowan would have been without water. As it was, householders were not allowed to water their gardens even with hoses, and were reduced to using water recycled from washing machines, and shower and bath water. In Beechworth, sprinklers were banned for the first time in twenty years. Myrtleford’s supply of water was precarious, and pressure was building for a dam on the Buckland.
with Naturopath Belinda McPherson (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY)
The role of naturopathy in your health care NATUROPATHY and herbal medicine are like the ‘general practice’ of natural medicine. People can come to see us about absolutely anything, that’s one of my favourite things about my work. Most commonly though it’s because they are tired, worried, not sleeping well, experiencing some hormonal changes or want some support for the health of their kids. All of these things impact negatively on a person’s energy, so it’s probably not surprising that the bulk of my patients are just tired and somewhat anxious. Ultimately, naturopaths are aiming to improve the energy and healing response of the body using herbal and nutritional prescriptions, whilst implementing simple diet and lifestyle
adjustments. For me, naturopathy is all about supporting a person through whatever is leading to deficient energy levels (illness, worry, fear, insomnia, food choices/intolerances etc). It might be supporting new mothers who are struggling to breastfeed or struggling with a colicky baby, or using herbal medicine to manage mastitis and postpartum anxiety. It might be meeting a couple before they conceive and working step by step through their anxiety, nutritional deficiency and underlying hormonal imbalance for an optimal and successful pregnancy. Often it is about helping to resolve an infection, using herbs to treat and recover from heavy periods and hormonal imbalance, integrating a better
dietary strategy into family life, listening when there is loss, fear or stresses. There are so many things that can take our energy away and finding ways to get it back are so very rewarding for me and I believe a huge part of naturopathic practice. Kids’ infections respond really well to herbal medicine. I am rediscovering this as my children have grown, and using herbal medicine with my own kids has made me realise the importance of super simple treatment plans for things like tonsillitis, ear infections, sore tummies etc. Natural medicine just works so well and when administered appropriately has no side effects. We love helping our clients achieve their healthcare goals and we look forward to seeing you in clinic soon.

From page 1
But Marge doesn’t feel like a senior citizen. “I don’t like sitting down playing cards or all those sort of things, I like something a bit more exciting,” Marge said. She saw that she could have done ballroom dancing, but she didn’t want to do that; she had only ever danced with her husband, plus she felt her body wasn’t up to dancing much anymore. “I hadn’t been shooting for years, there was just an interest when I saw it advertised in the bit of information from Wangaratta council,” she said. “I thought ‘oh I don’t mind a bit of shooting’, so that’s why I went back to it.” Marge joined the Wangaratta Small Bore Rifle Club in December last year, after sitting a firearms safety course the club provides. She enjoys the target and the chal-
lenge of shooting, and loves the fact that there is a low impact sport in which she can just sit at a bench and shoot. Bench shooting has only been around for 10-15 years, and has helped older shooters who aren’t able to stand or shoot prone anymore continue in the sport rather than drifting away or retiring. It also allows wheelchair participants to shoot as the benches are high enough for them to wheel themselves under. Marge is currently in the process of applying for a shooter’s licence, and at 84 years young, she shows no signs of slowing down her active life. Those interested in joining the Wangaratta Small Bore Rifle Club can visit wsbrc.asm.au, or swing by the clubrooms on College Street behind the Barr Reserve on Wednesday evenings from 7.30pm.

GONE FISHING
◆ GOULBURN PRIZE: A nice silver perch caught in the Goulburn River on a bunch of worms last Thursday by Rohan Jenner from the YouTube channel RKJ Fishing. This was one of close to a dozen native fish caught that afternoon.
Goulburn River delivers mixed bag of natives I AM writing this week’s fishing report on Valentine’s Day, in hard lockdown. I wish I was in my kayak fishing, but instead of being on the water my paddles are in the shed getting all row-mantic. Hopefully this lockdown does not last for long because last week I discovered the Goulburn River near Shepparton. I have never really fished there before, but after catching a heap of silver perch, a yellowbelly, a Murray cod, a trout cod and a big fat carp I am looking forward to heading back over there and exploring the fishing a lot more. All fish were caught on worms except for the Murray cod that was caught on cheese right on sunset. Here in Wangaratta the rivers are still quite murky after last week’s rain. I have had plenty of reports of Murray cod and trout cod being caught on bait, with the best bait being cheese. I have had very few reports of fish being caught in the Ovens River on lures though. Hopefully the water clears soon. Lake Hume continues to be
with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA the standout fishery this week by a mile. So many people are catching so many redfin up there at the moment. There have been a few yellowbelly caught as a by-catch but by far and wide it is the great redfin fishing that is attracting anglers from right across Victoria and NSW at the moment. Catches of 100 plus redfin are quite common. Many are big enough to keep and fillet, but very few are huge. All the usual redfin techniques are working well including diving lures, soft plastics and lipless crankbaits. For the bait fishermen small live yabbies have been working the best, just make sure you take plenty with you.
with Roberta Horne, AGBIZ ASSIST ◆ ARE YOU TALKING TO ME: Alpine Valleys Dairy Inc are keen to get feedback during a number of upcoming sessions.
Climate futures for the dairy industry ASSISTING our rural communities to recognise the need to do things differently and helping them plan a path forward is possibly some of the most important work we do throughout northern Victoria and into the southern part of New South Wales. To this end, we are pleased to support an initiative of Alpine Valleys Dairy Inc as they are very keen to hear the voice of regional dairy farmers via a series of free workshops to explore both the challenges and opportunities presented by our changing climate. There are a number of important issues to be discussed such as how the anticipated changes in seasonal rainfall
will impact on availability for both stock and land management decisions. Recognition that every farm has differing needs is a primary focus of the workshops to identify the key issues, in terms of exposure and sensitivity of individual dairy operations, and the priorities for action. Capture of the data from these sessions will also build industry awareness and assist research, extension and advocacy efforts for the dairy industry in the region. Workshop Dates: Tuesday, February 23 - Dederang Recreation Reserve Friday, February 26 - Milawa Foot-
