Sophia’s local connection By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE

SOPHIA Hanover is returning to her roots with her current project in Wangaratta. The New York-based designer, who is undertaking the water tower project in the Wangaratta Railway Precinct, grew up in Beechworth and returns every year. “Beechworth and the surrounding areas are incredible places to grow up, I feel incredibly lucky to say that I grew up surrounded by nature, and always had the best of both worlds in between the country and Melbourne,” she said. “I was fortunate to be surrounded by art, design and visual culture from an early age, both in the form of content I was introduced to and consumed, and an artistic community of older peers, which at the time in Beechworth was really flourishing. “I would say the fields of art and design are more of a mindset; being able to produce things within time frames, think critically, analysis and synthesis skills, I was taught to think for myself and, while it’s a simple thing, it can sow some pretty powerful seeds later on in life when dealing with the professional world.”

Sophia’s local connection Ŷ

From page 1

Sophia went through RMIT and studied creative and new media, both undergraduate and masters, which eventually took her to New York. “It was a place I had always wanted to spend more time in and, as a dual citizen, I was lucky enough to be able to stay,” she said. “I went on to work in architectural lighting design, for a world renowned lighting designer, and there had the privilege of working with many of the big names in architecture and planning. “It really solidified my interest in taking my skills and practice into the physical space. “At the time I left that studio, and in between working at design agencies, I met my partner Alex, who I found shared some of the same frustrations of working in the design field. “We founded Thinkcraft with a mission to prioritise projects that had a social benefit or wellbeing component to them as much as we could. “We really felt many of the things we were working on at other agen-

cies or studies felt pretty tired and there wasn’t much rigour in terms of thinking and crafting; hence the name of our studio.” Sophia said she makes sure to spend time in Australia every year and is often in Beechworth during the summer and autumn months. “As a studio we’re incredibly excited to work on our first public project here in Australia,” she said. “One of the best parts of any project is seeing it start to come to life in the real. “We’ve done a lot of large scale projections on building facades, but this is the first time we’re putting something permanent in terms of a mural on a facade. “There are a lot of implications with placing something in the public sphere and having it live there for many years. “Things will occur that you never expected, and people will react over time in organic ways that are surprising. “It’s simply the nature of civic artwork, and it should be treated as a living breathing process.”

◆ COLOURFUL: The brilliant Swainsona formosa will keep your garden abundantly coloured after summer blooms have finished.

A spectacular display in autumn

WHEN the vigour of summer flowers is fading, it is good to reap the benefits of early planning for a lovely floral display continuing on into autumn. There’s nothing quite as eyecatching as the abundant bright red and black wagon-wheel blooms set against soft grey foliage of Sturt Desert Peas trailing across the garden and spilling onto a path. The explorer William Dampier gathered the first specimens in 1699. The common name honours Captain Charles Sturt, who sighted great swathes of these desert beauties during his 1844 inland expedition. The botanical name Swainsona formosa is after Isaac Swainson (1746-1812), a London physician who developed a private botanic garden at Twickenham, England, and [Latin] formosus = beautiful, well-shaped; referring to the flower. Some knowledge about this plant’s natural habitat will assist in successfully growing it in the

home garden. In nature, the peas grow in deep sand overlaying a moist and nutrient-rich clay base. They typically germinate and flower in the winter and early spring. Not every season is a ‘good’ season. Cracked (scarified) seeds germinate after good rains when moisture can penetrate and germination rapidly begins. The seeds may have been lying dormant for years, opportunistically awaiting ideal conditions for germination. In the home garden, plan to provide plenty of water to penetrate to at least 30cm. Inserting a poly-tube or inverting a plastic two litre bottle with the base removed, will help with getting adequate water and soluble fertilizer to the roots. After the danger of frost has passed, scarify (crack) the seed in boiling water. Allow to cool for about 24 hours.

Plant seeds in their permanent position in full sun. The peas are deep-rooted and do not tolerate transplanting or their roots being disturbed. Use a very deep pot (a terra cotta drainage pipe is ideal) or choose a full sun position in the garden. If planting in a pot, add a deep layer of moisture-retaining crystals or perlite to the bottom of the pot. Plant the tiny seeds carefully (I use tweezers) and cover lightly with soil or vermiculite and keep moist. Seeds will germinate within a few days. Keep up the watering. Fertilize every two weeks directly to the root area with an all-round water-soluble fertilizer. Protect from snails and hungry birds. Plants should flower from around Christmas until mid-May. Harvest mature seed pods for planting the following spring. Seed is also available commercially.

YOUR HEALTH

Chrismont Wines La Zona Sangiovese 2018 AS the days pass it seems like the regular COVID-19 updates and reports of cases are getting few and far between. It is no longer the first or even second item on the news, reminders and signs about restrictions are gradually disappearing and we’re less stressed about masks, sanitising and stockpiling. While it feels like we’re heading in the right direction, we also know one positive case can turn everything on its head, so many of us are still reluctant to commit to a trip or even a weekend away. For now any holidays I’m planning are going to be booked and taken at short notice, and until then I’ll try and satisfy the desire to escape by visiting local places like Chrismont Wines in the King Valley. It’s a place where you can settle in for lunch, soak up the amazing views, enjoy the friendly vibe and tuck into traditional Italian dishes based on seasonal ingredients, with wine like the Sangiovese. This wine has a deep red colour and a kind of juicy, fruity aroma of cherries with a little light spice.

with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson, Natropath The flavour is long, redolent of cherry and there is also ripe plum fruit, but there is a pleasant, savoury bite too and some background herbs. It’s ideal for the table and particularly good with rich meats, the savoury wine a good foil for sticky pork ribs or slow cooked osso bucco. It’s handy too that you can take home whatever may be left in the bottle - as if that ever happens.

This Day in History, 1928 JAMES Ingram had seen almost all the history of Beechworth pass before his eyes during the 70 years or more that he had lived in the town, having arrived as a 25 year old in the first days of the gold rush. As a businessman, he conducted a newsagency in Camp Street adjoining the post office for many years. In his private life he was active in community affairs - the Ovens District Hospital and the Ovens Benevolent Home to mention just two. He was a legendary figure in Beechworth, dressed in a top hat and frock coat and riding his pony to and from his home at Ingram’s Rock. James Ingram died on this day in 1928, only a few weeks before his 100th birthday.

◆ GET IT CHECKED: By having a naturopath check your iron levels then appropriate action can be taken.

How low is too low?

IF you are dragging your body around, breathless with simple exercise, have brittle hair and nails, pale complexion and poor memory, you may have iron deficiency. A common blood iron test is the best way to decide if your body has enough iron. Many people find out they are iron deficient when they go to the blood bank to donate blood or during routine bloods during pregnancy. Often the symptoms of fatigue or breathlessness, heavy or light menstrual bleeding or frequent infections will alert your naturopath to authorise a simple pathology test to check iron levels. Correcting iron levels can have a profound effect on how energetic a person feels both mentally and physically and during pregnancy, low iron has links with early labour and neurological issues in the baby.

When getting iron through your daily diet, the best sources are easily digestible red meat, shellfish such as mussels and oysters, dark leafy green vegetables and salads. This is usually enough for a healthy person to meet the body’s needs. If the body has been less than well with illness, infection, heavy menstrual bleeding, dieting, increased stress demands, old age, poor digestion, vegetarians, children with numerous infections, heavy exercise demands or prolonged fatigue, the food sources of iron may not be enough to meet the need of the body. Over the counter iron supplements are a big trap for customers who are iron deficient. Products marketed as iron supplements often have only 5mg of iron, which is well under the amount needed to correct a deficiency and more often than not have unwanted digestive effects.

At our clinic we use anywhere from 75 to 150mg iron depending on how deficient a patient may be. The iron levels are always re-assessed within three to six months on a supplement as excess iron can be just as dangerous as not enough. In most cases you should not be taking an iron supplement ongoing without checking with your naturopath along the way. So, if you have been told your iron is a “bit on the low side” or you have been taking an over the counter supplement and not feeling any improvement or are experiencing constipation then please contact us to improve your health today. We are very good at and love correcting iron deficiency and seeing our clients improve their energy and health so call in today to the North East Natural Health Centre, 53A Reid Street, Wangaratta or phone 5722 9216.

GONE FISHING

Autumn conditions produce real hit and miss fishing

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA

AS with this time every year the fishing is changing. Some species are slowing down, some are speeding up and some stay the same. The Murray cod fishing has been quite hit and miss over the last couple of weeks, which is normal for this time of the year. On Saturday I went lure fishing for Murray cod with Brett Corker near Wangaratta. We fished ahead of the squally cold front. We caught four Murray cod and one yellowbelly in a little over an hour, and then once the wind swung around and the temperature dropped the fish just shut down. For the next 1.5 hours we did not get a touch. My last two Murray cod lure fishing trips before Saturday had resulted in nothing no bites, no follows, just nothing. That is typical ‘all or nothing’ autumn Murray cod fishing. I went been bait fishing in the Ovens River a couple of times last week and managed to catch two small yellowbelly, two Macquarie perch, three trout cod and one Murray cod - all small fish and all caught on worms. Gerry and Kate Dent caught two Murray cod and two trout cod at the North Beaches on the Ovens River at Wangaratta last weekend using cheese as bait. The biggest cod was around 50cm. I have spent a bit of time fishing some of the local stocked smaller waterways over the last week. Here is a brief overview of my results.

with Roberta Horne, Agbiz Assist ◆ HERE TO HELP: In times of natural disaster, Agbiz can provide long term relief and support service.

The seeds of recovery ◆ SHARING HER CATCH: Melanie Crispo (@melanie.crispo_ on Instagram) says the key to catching Murray cod is to ensure that you are comfortable. Melanie catches a lot of Murray cod in the Wangaratta area and you can follow her adventures on Instagram.

Eldorado Dredge Hole: A few carp and a lot of small redfin. Merriwa Park Lake Wangaratta: A few carp and a few silver perch. Stanley Dam, Stanley: A few rainbow trout and two yellowbelly. Arboretum Dam Euroa: Quite a few silver perch, some yellowbelly and a couple of redfin. There’s still plenty of fish to be caught at the moment. The Murray cod may be a little bit more unpredictable, but the redfin fishing right across the region should remain consistent.

THEY say when the going gets tough, the tough get going but what do you do when you are faced with a catastrophe? When your community loses homes, thousands of hectares of agricultural land, livestock, sheds and machinery along with the ability to provide an income? That’s when the true essence of those who live in this “land of drought and flooding rain” comes to the fore, when neighbour helps neighbour and total strangers step in and donate or lend a hand. This is also the time when Agbiz Care, the community-based charity arm of our organisation, swings into action. In our position as a highly credentialed agency, we are able to quickly initiate recovery efforts by channelling support to where it is required. We work with local councils, service clubs and other groups to identify and meet immediate needs such as coordinating the

distribution of prepaid grocery cards, redeemable vouchers and fodder. Our direct and long term relief and support services such as financial counselling, capacity building programs and community wellbeing initiatives are freely available to individuals and businesses in rural and regional communities as they recover It’s apparent that when country people put their hand out it is normally to give rather than take - it seems there is a collective community reaction to asking for help, in the belief that others are more deserving. Our fundraising efforts are generously supported by fellow farmers, businesses and people near and far who trust and value the work we have been doing in rural communities over the last three decades. Wherever possible we support local economies by negotiating with nearby traders to supply mer-

chandise upon presentation of our gift vouchers. It is the practicality and resilience of rural people who often downplay their own situation in order to help others. A prime example of this is the establishment of a fund to restore farm pastures devastated by the fires as suggested by local farmer, Stephen Whitsed of Biggara. Thanks to the joint efforts of an enthusiastic advisory group, a $500,000 grant application to Bushfire Recovery Victoria has been successful. These funds will be utilised to not only restore valuable pastures but also prevent further degradation and provide practical support to farmers and landholders as they journey towards social and economic recovery. Should you wish to make a donation towards our Rural Relief fund please contact us at donations@agbizassist.org.au or call us on 1300 032 332.

Our local businesses need your help. Make sure you remember to shop locally whilst respecting social distancing guidelines. Your local communities and businesses NEED YOU NOW.
