Supporting our cultural diversity By SIMONE KERWIN
EXPANDING the North East Multicultural Association’s volunteer base is among the items on the to-do list of the group’s new president, Ian Prentice. Ian took the reins earlier this month from Sue Ingleton, who had held the position for almost five years, and who he is thankful will lend her vast knowledge by continuing on as an outreach worker. “While many of us have been struggling with COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions, volunteering with NEMA is a chance to look outward and to help others who might be even more isolated than we have been,” Ian said. He said the group was keen to attract people of all ages to assist with its work in helping the region’s existing and new migrants, raising cultural awareness, and promoting the benefits of diversity, including through celebrations like Harmony Day and the Diwali Festival. Based at the Cultural Cottage in Wangaratta’s The Close, NEMA offers information, resources and classes including basic IT tuition, and English as a second language instruction. The not for profit group is funded through the Department of Family, Fairness and Housing, and serves the Wangaratta, Benalla, Indigo, Alpine and Mansfield municipalities.

BOOK NOOK
Are pronged collars harmful to my dog? PRONGED collars (also known as a pinch or constriction collars) are made of metal and are designed to tighten around a dog’s neck whenever pressure is applied. This can cause possible damage to the windpipe, nerves and other tissues. RSPCA Australia is opposed to the use of dog pronged collars due to the potential risk of injury, pain and suffering and because other more humane training methods are available. Pronged collars have a series of fang-shaped metal links, or prongs, with blunted points which pinch the loose skin on a dog’s neck when pulled. These collars are considered harmful as they are used to correct unwanted behaviour through inflicting pain as punishment. Many risks have been associated with aversive training methods. Unfortunately, some dog trainers recommend these collars, even though more humane training methods are available including reward
with RSPCA Knowledgebase based training, which has also been shown to be more effective than aversive methods. Many risks have been associated with this type of punishment based training, including aggression, fearfulness, anxiety and poor learning. A UK study found that punishment based methods used by owners increased the risk of dogs showing aggression to family members and unfamiliar people. Not only do punishment based methods lead to problem behaviours and poor welfare but they can reduce learning ability. Many dog trainers and animal welfare groups continue to advocate for the sale and use of pronged collars to be prohibited in all jurisdictions. Dog owners who seek trainers who use reward based methods can be confident that their dog will not be subjected to a pronged collar.

Devotion by Hannah Kent THIS third novel by Hannah Kent cements her place as an Australian writer with international appeal. Prussia 1836 Hanne Nussbaum is a quiet, reserved 14 year old living on her family’s walnut farm in rural Kay, caught in the interim between teen and adulthood with her world reduced to domestic tedium and the desire for friendship and love. Her family are Old Lutheran, an ostracised sect whose believers face persecution if discovered. Rural-dwelling Hanne seeks solitude and is happier in nature, listening to insects, playing in the snow or hanging upside down from a tree. Into this lonely but strangely idyllic world Hanne, her twin
brother Mathias and parents quietly exist until Hanne who is out visiting neighbours meets a girl called Thea Eichenwald. The girls become friends and eventually lovers. In 1838, the Old Lutheran families of Kay are being persecuted by their king who is reforming the nation’s religion. When the families are offered the chance to flee Prussia on a six month journey to the new colony of South Australia they readily embark. The 200 people crammed into an old lice-ridden boat soon has typhus sweeping the ship and the journey turns into an horrific experience for Hanne with the experience of seeing a whale breach and the sound of a whale song adds a slightly mystical feel.

1838 South Australia - new land and new beginning. Echoing actual history, the Old Lutherans make their way to Hahndorf in the Barossa Valley and there our review ends as to reveal more will reveal too much. A raw, touching novel with subtle supernatural tones the overall theme of love and family is captured in the title ‘Devotion.’ In true Kent style the writing is lyrical with the reader torn between the urge to turn the page quickly to find out Hanne’s story or the alternate of a chapter a day to prolong the enjoyment. This is a must read title for lovers of historical fiction and brilliant writing. Hannah Kent’s first two books Burial Rites (2013) and The Good People (2016) are also available.

YOUR HEALTH La Cantina Wines 2019 Nebbiolo
ONE of the highlights of the annual events calendar is the opportunity to experience a bit of La Dolce Vita in the beautiful King Valley. While the popular event will not be held in its traditional form this weekend, ticketed under the one umbrella, all of the wineries will be open and the region’s winemaking families are super keen to see everyone come back. We are so close to being back to normal you can almost taste it, and while the usual COVID restrictions will be in place, we’ve become used to flashing our phones, keeping our distance and having our masks at the ready. Get out and about and visit some cellar doors like La Cantina King Valley, where the Corsini family will welcome you to their classic, Tuscan style cellar door. You can taste their range of wines with no preservatives added, including the Saperavi and 2019 Nebbiolo. This classic Italian variety originated in the Piedmont region, and this one is russet red in colour and has bright cherry fruit and almost floral aromas. It’s medium bodied and savoury; with flavours of wild red berries and cherry fruit and a touch of invigorating spice. Enjoy it over lunch at Corsini’s

This Day in History, 1953 ELDORADO’S last hotel was destroyed by fire. The Star had been part of the John Wallace chain of goldfield hotels, and its demise on this day in 1953 almost matched the end of Eldorado’s gold dredge, which had for so many years pumped money into the town’s economy and provided the Star Hotel with many of its week-day lodgers, as the men worked on the dredge during the week and returned to their homes at week’s end.
Tinnitus and hearing aids RECENTLY, a client commented to me that she had been reluctant to seek assistance with her hearing loss as she also experienced tinnitus. She was concerned that the presence of tinnitus would make it impossible to use a hearing aid or that the hearing aid might make the tinnitus worse. She was pleasantly surprised to find that her experience was just the opposite - the hearing aid distracted her ear from the sound of the tinnitus which was less noticeable. Firstly, what is tinnitus? This term refers to any sound you hear in your head or ears with no external source. While tinnitus is often described as ‘ringing’, it can also sound like buzzing, cicadas, static and many other sounds. It can come and go, and also vary in loudness.
Tinnitus is very common, with some studies suggesting that approximately 80 per cent of adults may experience tinnitus sometime in their lifetime. It is important to know that tinnitus is not a disease and is not doing damage to your ears. While the origin of tinnitus is not always clear, there are several biological and lifestyle factors which may be contributing to tinnitus such as: hearing, mental wellbeing, physical health, medications and other medical conditions. There is no instant cure for tinnitus; however, management strategies have been proven to be very helpful. In summary, tinnitus is something which is generated internally. When a person with a hearing loss uses a hearing aid in the affected ear, the hearing aid provides sound from the outside which often has the effect of ‘masking’ the internal tinnitus.
Many hearing aid wearers comment that their tinnitus is less noticeable when they wear their aids. It is interesting to note that modern hearing aids have an option for the hearing professional to design a program specifically to generate a masking noise, reducing the effects of tinnitus. This can be used as a ‘tinnitus masker’ for individuals who happen to have normal hearing and troublesome tinnitus. This feature can also be activated if the amplification provided by a hearing aid does not adequately address tinnitus when associated with a hearing loss. If you would like to learn more about your tinnitus and the possible benefit of using a hearing aid for you, please contact us at Wangaratta Audiology on (03) 5722 4433.

GONE FISHING
Ŷ
◆ YELLOW GOLD: A small yellowbelly caught on worms in Boosey Creek last week.
Yellowbelly, trout still on the bite in creeks, rivers THE unsettled weather (to put it nicely) seems to have slowed down those wanting to go fishing more than it has slowed down the actual fish. Over the weekend, despite the strong wind and rain, there were still fish caught. I had one report of four yellowbelly being caught in the Sandy Creek arm of Lake Nillahcootie, which is protected by the wind. I also had a report of an 80cm Murray cod caught up in that arm on a lure that was targeting yellowbelly. I had a report of both brown and rainbow trout being caught in the Ovens River at Bright on worms - not near Bright, but actually in the middle of town in Centenary Park. Last week before the weather changed I went over to Katamatite and fished the Broken Creek and Boosey Creek. I managed to catch two small yellowbelly, one in each creek and both fish were caught on worms. For those unfamiliar with the Broken Creek, it runs from Caseys Weir on the Broken River to Katamatite, where it is met with Boosey Creek. Broken Creek is very low and

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA is only trickling by the time it meets the Boosey Creek. Boosey Creek is much the same and will dry up soon, but only upstream of Katamatite. At Katamatite it is fed with irrigation water fed by a nearby channel providing it with a strong and reliable flow of water. There are a few kilometers of fishing in the Boosey Creek before it becomes the Broken Creek. So it is the same water, in the same creek bed, but with a different name from the junction of the two creeks downstream. The creek is stocked with yellowbelly and Murray cod and also contains carp and is one of my favourite places to wet a line, although I am yet to experience an outstanding fishing session there with my best ever haul being two nice sized yellowbelly.

Ian said it was exciting that new membership on the NEMA board included four members who were not born in Australia; they hail from the Congo, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Nepal, adding further to the group’s cultural awareness level. Ian’s own involvement with NEMA came soon after moving to Wangaratta from Melbourne four years ago, when his wife Ruth sought volunteer opportunities and discovered the association. With a background in management and finance, as well as more than a decade in pastoral care with the Truth and Liberation Concern Church (founded by members of the God’s Squad Christian Motorcycle Club), Ian’s name arose when NEMA was in need of a treasurer, and he took on the role in 2017. He continued to travel back to Melbourne for work until mid-2018, when he started a new job as general manager business operations at The Centre, and he has fully embraced the lifestyle of the region from which Upper Lurgraised Ruth was drawn. “I love the wonderful sense of space here. From where we live, I can see the tops of the river gums, and I really enjoy that,” he said. Ian also enjoys being part of NEMA’s work for those in the community who may be isolated or at some disadvantage. “Isolation is not just due to language and culture, but can be geographic as well,” he said. “Even things like getting internet connection can be difficult in some of the more remote areas. “Our multicultural population is growing, and we are discovering pockets we didn’t know were there. “We are seeing more people from Asia seeking support; a lot of our European migrants are ageing but may still need support, and we work with the Dutch and Italian communities. “We provide assistance such as English lessons, initially conversational and then more structured; help with driver’s licences; and a playgroup which runs in Wangaratta and Benalla, offering socialisation for children as well as connection for parents. “We have social gatherings and run

outreach visitation when we can, in line with restrictions. “We are also trying to get cultures to reach across to other cultures to provide information. “There are also referral services, enabling people facing challenges such as seeking the correct visas to be referred to the appropriate agencies, and assistance to prepare people for events like bushfires, which they may never have faced before; information is power in those situations. “A lot of our work has been held up by COVID, so we’ve spent a lot more time on the phone - there have been hundreds and hundreds of phone calls - and a lot of time helping with information about restrictions, particularly because they have changed so often.” Ian said NEMA’s work involved an average of at least 400 to 500 volunteer hours each month, so more hands on deck were always welcome. “I’m amazed at what our volunteers achieve. “To hear the stories of people who have been assisted, and how it has helped them is wonderful.
“That’s what makes it worthwhile,” he said. Along with boosting volunteer numbers, Ian said during his stint as president, he was also keen to pursue additional funding avenues, and to create greater awareness of cultural diversity within the wider community. “We have over 50 nationalities and more than 70 languages being spoken here, some probably facing more challenges than others,” he said. “I think funding is certainly one aspect we need to look at, as well as lifting the profile of NEMA, and the potential for developing partnerships with local councils. “We have good, positive relationships with them at the moment, but we need to enhance and make the most of them. “I would encourage anyone interested in volunteering some time, who may be able to support us in some way, or who may need support, to contact us.” NEMA can be contacted via email at nema@nema.org.au or phone 5721 2090 (office hours are Monday to Wednesday, 9am to 5pm).
