WITHIN a group of friends, it’s usually the case that although there’s a strong connection between them all, everyone brings something different to the table. That’s a point perfectly illustrated in Wangaratta author Belinda Harrison’s latest children’s book, ‘Leo and the Magpies’, which is aimed at nine to 12 year olds. The book is the second instalment in Belinda’s Nick, Leo and Sam trilogy, which follows the adventures of three young friends who in the first book (‘Nick and the Uniform Shop’) discovered there was more happening in their hometown than they could ever have imagined. In the second book, the discoveries Nick made in the school uniform shop lead to a series of tasks the friends must tackle together - and that’s where Leo’s STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) skills come into play. “This book focuses more on the boys being together and exploring the tunnels,” Belinda said. “It also brings in Leo’s background and how his interests and knowledge help Nick work out puzzles he doesn’t ‘get’. “I think kids and adults are drawn to people who have similar interests to themselves, though they’re often also into other things that we’re not, and that’s okay and a strong friendship can still be built. “It means we bring different strengths and weaknesses to our friendships.” Belinda said the story also highlighted the fact that people could often have levels of knowledge which proved surprising. “The adults in the story all have a purpose to play, not only as parents, friends or educators in the boys’ lives, but in the overall scheme of things.though I can’t say much more than that without giving the story away,” she said.

A guide to toenail clipping TOENAIL clipping is an acquired skill but with practise and patience anyone can learn to do it well. To begin with, nail clipping in all but the most placid animals is a two person job. One person to hold the animal and one person to clip the nails. Good restraint is necessary to keep the dog or cat still. For cats, wrapping them up in a towel can be a good way to keep them still while one leg is pulled out at a time. If your pet doesn’t like having its nails done then doing it progressively, one foot at a time over several days can be an effective strategy. If the pet is getting very upset it is best to give up and come back to it rather than persevere and ingrain the toenail clipping as a bad experience. Using good equipment is helpful. A quality pair of nail clippers may be up to $50 but they will last a long time, especially if they are just used at home. Using a smaller pair for cats is helpful too. The main key to clipping the nails is avoiding the quick which is perfused with blood and will bleed if cut into. In dogs and cats with white to clear nails the quick can be seen as a pink triangle encased in the nail and

with Ellie Merritt, Warby Street Veterinary Clinic should be easily avoided by careful placement of the nail trimmers. If the nails are dark or black the quick cannot be seen and a more cautious approach taking a small amount off regularly is recommended. In dogs we generally take the nails off level with the flat surface of the toe pad, but if the nails are overgrown this may lead to bleeding as the quick lengthens with the nail. If your pet’s nails are very long it is best to take a small amount off regularly (weekly) and the quick will retract back to its normal position allowing gradual shortening of the nail back to its original position. The need for nail trimming is variable between animals. In general, as animals get older and less active the need for trimming increases. If you are not keen on trimming your pet’s nails yourself then your veterinary clinic will be more than happy to help for a small fee and will able to show you how it is done as well if you ask.

◆ READY TO PEAK: The beautiful Hakea invaginata reach their peak flowering time in ‘sprinter’.

PHOTO: Helen Van Riet

Hakea invaginata - blooming in ‘sprinter’ EMINENT botanist Tim Entwisle suggests that southern Australia should adopt a five-season calendar that more closely reflects the cycles in weather, plant and animal activity. Our traditional four seasons are modelled on the northern hemisphere, except our seasons are at opposite times of the calendar year. From early August, birds are nesting, the bush is vibrant with birdsong and awash with golden acacias. Entwisle has named the season of August/September ‘sprinter’. The months of October/November when we experience rapidly moving weather patterns, often accompanied with heavy rainfall, Entwisle has named ‘sprummer’. Hakeas, such as the beautiful Hakea invaginata reach their peak flowering time in ‘sprinter’. In contrast to the so-called ‘needle hakeas’, despite its appearance, H. invaginata has flexible, silky-smooth leaves. It occurs naturally in yellow or

red sand in mallee scrub west of Coolgardie, WA. The epithet ‘invaginata’ is from Latin invaginatus = to enfold, and refers to the grey-blue narrow leaves which have five deep longitudinal grooves which are curled inwards creating a rounded needle-like appearance. It was formally named by botanist Brian Burtt in 1950. H. invaginata is an upright medium shrub, useful for hedging and for narrow spaces. It is best suited to free-draining soils in an open, sunny position. In late-winter, clusters of stem-clasping bright pink nectarladen flowers are borne in profusion on last year’s growth. It can be readily shaped with regular, light pruning after flowering. Hakeas are survivors in harsh growing conditions. Their peak flowering time is when rainfall is most likely, in late winter, i.e. in ‘sprinter’. Hakeas are not as well known in cultivation as grevilleas which are their close relatives.

Some hakeas have similar flowers to some grevilleas, and the two species can be confused. Both are great bird-attractors. A careful inspection of the seed capsule is one way of identifying which is which. Hakeas have thick, woody symmetrical seed capsules. These seed capsules remain attached to the plant, sometimes for years, and remain unopened until excessive heat causes them to open and release the seeds. Grevilleas have more fragile seed capsules. They mature rapidly after flowering, and open and release their seeds. DNA sequencing has confirmed that grevilleas are a large branch on the tree of life, whilst hakeas are a sub-branch within it. Hakeas are simply grevilleas that have developed thicker seedcases. H. invaginata is available from specialist Australian plants nurseries. As one of the most desirable hakeas, sourcing a plant is well worth the effort.

Indigo Organic Grape Growers 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon AS the virus spread across New South Wales and into parts of Queensland which hadn’t been affected before it was interesting to hear their reactions. Despite Victorians being well experienced with lockdowns and restrictions, business owners there appeared shocked they actually had to close their doors and people on the street were put out about not being able to go anywhere. No doubt the whole of Melbourne collectively rolled their eyes. It seems like most of us don’t really pay much attention to what is happening in another state, let alone learn a lesson from it, and it’s not until it happens to us that it suddenly becomes real. So as people in Cairns began panic buying, we calmly braced for another lockdown, comforted by the knowledge bottle shops will always stay open. It was time for more intensive meal preparation and scouring the wine rack to choose a bottle to go with the lasagne. The Indigo Organic Grape Growers Collective Cabernet Sauvignon was a good choice. It has a deep, purple red colour and an inviting aroma of blackcurrant and berry fruit. It’s fruit-forward, rich with

cherry flavour as well, but not overly weighty and balanced with pleasant savoury, white pepper spice and cedar. That savoury quality makes if more food-friendly and it matches well with hearty meat dishes. It’s perfectly suited to the rich beefiness of the wine and oregano-infused ragu layered in the lasagne - a dish you would never cook from scratch unless you had time on your hands. About $17.*

This Day in History, 1857 THIS was the day decreed to begin moving the bodies from the cemetery in Lock Street Beechworth, to the new site on the outskirts of the town. The process of gathering all the remains - some were in coffins, others between sheets of bark - continued until the end of the month. By then, 64 bodies had been recovered. There were a number of surprises. One coffin contained nothing. The formal re-interment took place on September 1.

MAYBE nothing has changed for you since COVID became a part of our vocabulary. Maybe everything has changed for you. Maybe you feel like the world just put the “closed” sign on their door, and accidentally left it there for a year or so. A pandemic by definition impacts the whole world in one way or another, so we are all feeling the impacts of COVID. You might be a helper; going to work, saving lives, rolling up your sleeves to do your bit to help the world re-open again. Your call to arms might be to stay home, stay distanced, check-in, sanitise, and air-hug your way to our collective safety. You might be among the now-idolised team of teachers, writers, technicians, and marshals who are working tirelessly to allow us to work, socialise, study, and connect from the safety of our homes. Whoever you are, we all play an important role our collective safety, health, and well-being. Though we’re still working to bring COVID under control, it might feel like it’s been a lifetime since we could roam, socialise and hug freely, and since hand sanitiser was optional. If you are finding that anniversaries or timelines are hard for you, if you’re dreading the news, the daily figures, or wishing another friend happy birthday

via text message instead of your usual afternoon at the pub, there are a few things you can do. Remember that this too shall pass: we’ve made an immense amount of progress since COVID first entered our lives, from the ways we relay information, contact tracing efforts, testing and quarantine processes, exemptions, borders re-opening, immunisations, and travel bubbles. Lockdowns are now measured in days, not months. Gatherings are small, but the time we spend with those we love is even more precious. It will get better. Allow yourself to grieve what used to be: the sense of loss of what was, what was supposed to be, and what the future might have held can be immeasurable, but allowing yourself the time and space to process these changes can be beneficial to your overall wellbeing. Think, breathe, journal, cry, do whatever it is your mind and body need for the grieving process. Make a new routine: continue those Whine and Wine Wednesday Zoom catch-ups, early morning online yoga sessions, family board game nights, or learning Spanish through DuoLingo. Routines help us feel safe in a world that can still be unpredictable. Connect in whatever way you can: video chat with the people next door

or the people on the other side of the world, bake some cookies for your neighbour and do a no-contact surprise delivery, find a pen pal or a long-lost relative and share stories that unite and inspire, send flowers just because. Connection gives purpose and meaning to our lives. Create joy: sit in the sunshine, paint your feelings, blow bubbles, eat cake for breakfast, find your purpose, yell a compliment to a stranger on the other side of the street. Whatever brings you joy, try to do more of that. Share: If you have the capacity, do something to create joy for someone - or something - else. Plant a tree, make a donation to a charity, bake a cake for the fire brigade members. Helping others relieves our burden, enhances our sense of community and connectedness, and makes other people smile. Look after yourselves and each other - we’ll get through this, together. As well as having STEM skills, Leo is a passionate Sydney Swans supporter, and mentions how he became a fan and that he was born the day the Swans won the AFL premiership in 2005. So when Belinda had the chance to meet Paul Roos, who coached the Swans to that flag, during a recent visit to Wangaratta, she couldn’t resist asking him to sign a copy of ‘Leo and the Magpies’. “He did, so I was slightly (okay REALLY) excited about that!” she said. The prolific writer, who has also written a fantasy series for adults set in ancient Greece, as well as another children’s book - ‘Ashleigh: Scratcher of Stories and Seeker of Truths’ - and writes for work too, said she had drawn inspiration for Nick, Leo and Sam “just from my head”. “Although I listen when my daughter talks about boys she knows and hangs out with, and I have spoken to parents of boys to make sure my characters behave how young guys do these days,” she said.

In addition to the boys and their families, in this book we meet Leo’s nemesis, Max - who is not your average villain. Belinda said she didn’t have a nemesis when growing up, but in every story, it was “important to have a bad guy for the good guys to defeat”. The trilogy is another opportunity for Belinda to indulge her love of history, and the boys mention having watched ‘Horrible Histories’ when they were younger, which was the kind of educational approach she was aiming for in presenting elements of the past. “I think being able to present history and stories and knowledge in a fun way makes it stick better in your mind, and if I can present that in a fun way then I’m all for it,” she said. “Plus, you never know when some of this seemingly useless information might come in handy - if only for boring your mates with general knowledge or winning a pub trivia night!” She said the response to the first

book had been positive, and she’d had a number of young readers email or write to her to tell her how much they’d enjoyed it. “There are even some big kids who have enjoyed it and have tried to work out what CLLAW (one of the puzzles confronting the boys) stands for - but we don’t find that out until the third book in the series,” she said. The final story, focused on Sam, is expected to round out the series next year. “I don’t have all the answers to all the questions book two raised yet, but I can promise that it will be all wrapped up neatly and won’t end on a cliff hanger like book two did,” Belinda said. If you’d like to try your hand at puzzling out the answers confronting Nick, Leo and Sam, ‘Leo and the Magpies’ is available at Booktique and Edgars Books and News in Wangaratta, The BBQ Garden in Glenrowan, Bush Gatherings in Violet Town, newsXpress in Myrtleford and Bright Newsagency.

UP THE SLOPES

MONEY MATTERS

Welcome back to regional visitors...again ALL snow resorts are bound by current COVID-19 restrictions and requirements and visitors must adhere to all requests or entry will not be given. A negative COVID-19 is strongly recommended for anyone travelling to an Alpine resort. Falls Creek has excellent snow coverage and you can expect firm conditions on and off piste. The average snow depth is 115cm with 122cm at Village bowl and 104cm on North Side. There are 6 lifts turning however terrain and snow play areas are closed. For XC skiers, the trails have varying amounts of cover from good to excellent with 30 out of 32 trails open. Snow chains must be carried and fitted when directed. Keep up to date with current lift and trail information and dining options and activities via the website or Falls Creek app. Mt Hotham has a snow depth of 124cm of natural snow and 6 scheduled lifts turning each day, wind dependant. You are solely responsible for your own safety while ski and snowboard touring on Backcountry. There is no hazard marking, avalanche control or ski patrol in the backcountry. Natural hazards include: avalanches, icy slopes, steep terrain, variable snow conditions, cliffs, creek crossings, poor visibility and rapidly changing weather. There are 16 trails open for XC skiers, with the trail to Dinner Plain groomed but watch out for the bark and litter on the trail after winds. Toboggan slopes ready for lots of fun with two terrain parks open.

Mt Buffalo has a good snow cover at a depth of 15cm. For XC skiers, the Beginners Loop, Horn Road and Bogong Plain trails are all open with good and coverage at Beginners and Horn, and patchy at Bogong. Dingo Dell and Cresta Valley are both open for snow play and tobogganing, however Dingo Dell is rather patchy and it’s difficult to find a line to slide down from the top. Cresta has quite a good base, so finding a line down is easier. At Dingo Dell, you need to wear face masks and sign in via the QR code. You will also be asked where you are from and proof of same may be requested. Mt Buller has an average natural snow depth of 80cm with 15 lifts in operation across the mountain. Kofler’s and Skyline parks are both open for skiing and snowboarding. Horse Hill and Village toboggan and snowplay parks are also open, however their snow is still poor to fair respectively. For XC skiers all trails are open with very good to excellent snow cover with skating and classical grooming styles. Overnight and 2WD need to carry wheel chains and fit them where directed. with Winsec Savings & Loans

What type of loan is right for you? With Winsec Savings & Loans IF you are looking for finance, the array of mortgages available helps a good finance broker to tailor a package to suit your needs. Here are just some of the options: Fixed-rate mortgages - with a fixedrate loan, you know exactly how much you’ll pay per fortnight or month for the fixed period of the loan (usually one to five years). Variable rate mortgages - repayments can change during the life of a variable-rate loan, so you may pay more or less as interest rates rise or fall. If you’re fairly sure that rates are set to fall, this a good option. Principal and interest mortgages in this mortgage, you are paying the amount lent to you plus the interest. Interest-only mortgages - with interest-only, you are paying just the interest on the loan - you are not pay-

ing off any of the original principal. Split home loan (fixed and variable) - you can choose to have part of your loan at a fixed rate and the other part can be at a variable interest rate. If rates do fall, the interest will go down on the variable part of your loan, but you aren’t taking as big of a risk should rates rise. Redraw facility - if you have a variable-rate loan and you make extra repayments, then you can withdraw that additional money when you need to (you can’t do this on fixed-rate loans). Land loan - a land loan lets you buy a block of land without the pressure to build on it as soon as possible. Land loans are usually variable interest for up to 30 years. Construction loan - for buying land, building or renovating your home, a 12 month construction loan can be the best way to go.

Usually, up to 90 per cent of the property value can be borrowed. Self-employed - for self-employed people, a home loan can still be arranged using differing supporting documentation that shows your ability to service a loan and might include BAS and bank statements. You self-certify your income, which will need verification. You may be able to borrow up to 90 per cent of the property’s value. Equity Release (Reverse Mortgage) - this loan type allows you to convert a portion of your residential property “asset” into cash or an income stream while still allowing you to continue to live in your home. An MFAA Approved Finance Broker is much more than your average mortgage broker. Speak to the team at Win Securities Limited 37 Reid Street, Wangaratta (03) 5721 5200 ACL No. 240901.
