From ashes to art By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE

FOR local artist Bonnie Clements, sharing her story of the January bushfires was best told through the unpredictability and flow of resin. The 20 year old from Carboor said she chose resin as her medium in high school. “I’ve always been a creative; exploring my arts through photography and growing my choice of mediums whilst exploring during my later years of high school,” she said. “Although I was sure I had more of an eye for design I grew to really love the freedom resin gave me so, when I was set to choose my final art medium, I experimented with resin and have never looked back.” When asked why she chose resin, Bonnie explained she finds it “unpredictable”. “Because you use a pouring technique, it isn’t quite as controlled or flexible, compared to paint for example,” she said.

Hyperthermia (heat stroke) WITH the warmer weather, our pets cannot simply take off their jumper so it is important we provide them with a means to cope with the heat. Heat stroke is a life threatening condition seen by many veterinarians over the warmer months. Animals can present with signs ranging from excessive panting, excessive salivation, vomiting or defecating of blood, seizures, wobbliness or respiratory arrest and coma. As the body’s temperature climbs above normal, the internal organs are also affected and can result in secondary issues such as nerve damage, gut ulceration and excessive inflammatory response (SIRS) is elicited. Depending on the severity of the clinical signs associated to the hyperthermia animals may require hospitalisation and some may not unfortunately survive the internal damage. Treatment is aimed at correcting the increased temperature and treating any internal damage, where possible. The cause of the heat stroke may

with Chloe Trompf, Wangaratta Veterinary Clinic be as simple as a dog knocking over his only water source for the day, or an excessively long walk/run on a hot day. Other causes often seen are locking dogs in hot cars whilst ‘quickly’ popping into shops. Brachycephalic dogs (dogs with a short wide head) such as pugs, bulldogs, staffordshire terriers, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are at an increased risk of hyperthermia due to anatomical deformities such as elongated soft palate, tracheal hypoplasia and stenotic external nares. To avoid a potentially fatal situation make sure you pets are not locked in cars on hot days (or even mild days), make sure there are two water sources for those left unattended throughout the day and avoid excessive exercise on hot days.

area, as well as light frost and basic neglect, which is also useful for beginner gardeners. They don’t require much care once established and can bounce back form most rookie gardening errors. They enjoy a sunny position or part-shade with well-draining soil. They can survive with very little water or large downpours, so long as the water can get away. If they find themselves stuck in boggy soil, the roots will rot and your plant will die.

Fertilising in spring and autumn with a general-purpose fertiliser will be sufficient and you’ll be rewarded in spring and summer, and sometimes even in winter if the temperature and conditions lend themselves to it. You can cut the flowers and bring them inside in a vase or give them to someone who will enjoy the bright bloom. It’s best to cut them back when they’ve finished flowering to encourage new growth and more gorgeous blooms.

Just like living in paradise

IT’S been lovely to see so many Bird of Paradise flowers starting to burst forth in local gardens. The Bird of Paradise - or Strelitzia - are native to South Africa and quite hardy plants now found in many Australian gardens. They get their name from their striking flowers which can often been mistaken for plumes of birds with their bright blooms perched on long stems peeking out from between thick leaves. They can withstand drought, which is particularly handy for our

Campbells of Rutherglen Durif 2018 AS more days pass with zero cases of the dreaded virus being reported, it seems like our collective spirits continue to lift. Being able to catch up with friends and family and tour across the state is exciting and it seems it won’t be long before we’ll even be able to book a holiday across the border. While I understand wearing masks is an easy insurance policy against catching the virus, I will still be glad to see them go. By all means use them when you can’t social distance, but they get in the way when you want to talk and taste, and as you get older you find out how much you can’t hear and are actually reading lips. I’m looking forward to visiting Rutherglen again and enjoying wines like Campbells of Rutherglen Durif. The fruit was harvested in April and fermented on skins for seven days before the wine spent 18 months in French and American oak before bottling. The deep, red wine has lightly purple hue and aromas of rich cherry fruit and fruit cake spice which can be appreciated better sans mask.

with Anita McPherson

It’s full bodied and richly textured; packing a dry tannin punch with lingering cherry flavour that is also kind of leathery and maybe even hinting at liquorice. It deserves more than a quick taste and while it would be great with roast beef, I enjoy countering that dryness with extra tasty cheese, bringing out the fruit flavour. Here’s to having all the senses unencumbered.

Available from local outlets or visit www.campbellswines.com.au. About $28 a bottle.

This Day in History, 1934 A NEW traffic bridge was being built across the Ovens River at Wangaratta to replace the old one which had been in service since 1886. Huge steel girders had been brought to Wangaratta by rail and moved to the site by motor lorry. By this day in 1934 a start could be made dismantling the old bridge and the timbers suitable for re-use carted down the river, where another new bridge was being constructed specifically for the use of livestock. As motor traffic along the Hume Highway had increased, so had the danger of driving stock into the Wangaratta saleyards from north of the river, so a stock bridge was built downstream.

with Christos Miliankos, Naturopath, North East Naturopathic Group ◆ ADDED HELP: Multivitamins help supplement your diet, providing nutrients to your body that you might otherwise miss out on.

Why do we need a multi-vitamin daily? WHEN I was in my first year of my naturopathy degree I was a very idealistic, fit and healthy vegan. I thought everyone can be healthy just by eating wonderful organic vegan food and that would also heal the planet. While that is all a very romantic and simplistic way to view the world and the culinary woes of people - I did become a bit less rigid and a bit more realistic following more research. Just a mere 50 years ago there was 70 per cent more nutrients in the soil on average. But what does that mean in real terms?

Imagine a carrot from the supermarket which has been trucked many kilometres and kept in cold storage. Sometimes we wash it and eat it but other times we cook it into a stew and put it in individual soft plastic containers and freeze it. Three months later we pull it out and microwave it and have it for dinner - and we expect it to nourish us. The above example is about a carrot a fairly natural food. What about all the food we consume that comes in boxes and has had a variety of processing?

Do we really expect them to provide every bit of nourishment our body needs? Plodding along with an average diet can certainly be enough if you are generally healthy. However, if you’re a growing child, going through puberty, pregnant, breast feeding or going through menopause, or a busy parent, then I really do believe you need some added help in the form of a good quality multi vitamin and mineral complex. So come in and speak to me today about what your body needs to remain balanced and healthy.

GONE FISHING

nemedia.com.au

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ OVENS GOLD: Brett Corker with a nice yellowbelly from the lower Ovens River caught on worms on the weekend. Victorian Fisheries are stocking 50,000 yellowbelly into the Ovens River so hopefully catches like this start to become more frequent in coming years.

Rivers settle and trout, yellowbelly on the bite MINIMAL rainfall across North East Victoria has seen water levels in the local rivers begin to really settle down, and make access much easier. Brett Corker and I fished the lower Ovens River on Saturday afternoon where we found that the water level had dropped a full metre from the week before. We managed to catch two small Murray cod (both released), two carp and Brett caught an elusive Ovens River yellowbelly. Thanks to the resumption of yellowbelly stocking by Victorian Fisheries in recent years yellowbelly are becoming a more and more frequent catch along the Ovens River from Wangaratta downstream. All of our fish were caught using worms as bait. On Sunday afternoon I went fly fishing in a small tributary of the King River where I managed to catch four small brown trout using a Royal Stimulator dry fly with a bead headed nymph suspended underneath. Not one of the fish rose to hit my dry fly - they were all caught on the nymph.

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA I had to change my flies a few times thanks to the trees and my inability to cast properly and as a result I used three different but similar bead headed nymphs. I caught trout on a black, a brown and a green nymph. And once again as with recent weeks there are still plenty of reports of yellowbelly being caught in the larger lakes of the area with Lake Hume appearing to be the standout. Yellowbelly reports from Lake Nillahcootie seemed to have slowed down quite a bit. In fact I have two friends that fished there on the weekend and caught no yellowbelly. Spring is the best time to catch yellowbelly at Lake Nillahcootie, however after the spring rush they can still be caught all summer.

◆ IT’S SO CRAZY IT MIGHT BE GENIUS: Mad scientists abound in fictional books, tv shows and movies, but who were some real life mad scentists, and what did they do?

Real life mad scientists

WE’VE all heard of Dr Frankenstein and his monster, but this week I thought we’d take a look at some real life examples of mad scientists. Some of them make stitching different people’s body parts together and bringing such a creature back to life sound like a perfectly sane idea by comparison. Francis Crick Along with James D Watson, Francis Crick will forever be remembered as one of the discoverers of the very structure of DNA. The duo met while working at the University of Cambridge and in 1962 received a Nobel Prize for their scientific work. Crick was arguably among the finest minds in science, which is what makes his later beliefs all the more difficult to fathom. At some point in the 1970s, Crick became an advocate of a strange pseudoscientific theory – a theory that was explored in the ‘Alien’ franchise prequel ‘Prometheus’, and is purportedly a core tenet of Scientology. The premise of “directed panspermia” is that life on Earth was deliberately seeded by extraterrestrials. Jose Delgado University of Madrid graduate Jose Delgado may have received a prestigious professorship at Yale University,

but his research at the venerable institution’s physiology department was more than a little creepy, dealing on the whole as it did with mind control. While at Yale in the 1950s and ’60s, Delgado inserted electrode implants into the brains of primates and used a remote control that gave off radio frequencies to make the animals perform complicated movements. Later, he placed an implant into the brain of a bull and got into the ring with the beast, using his transmitter to stop it charging before it reached him. Perhaps most alarmingly of all, Delgado also wired up no less than 25 people. Behaviourally, his device only impacted people’s aggression, but he kept striving for a way to achieve mind control. Paracelsus Paracelsus was a learned man of the Renaissance who earned a doctorate in medicine from the University of Ferrara in the early 16th century. He is now seen as the father of modern toxicology but was also a practicing physician, botanist and occultist – the latter of which may have contributed to one of his exceptionally weird personal experiments. Paracelsus was convinced that he could create a living homunculus – a tiny man – by keeping semen in a warm place and feeding it on human blood.

Newsmedia Advertising Works, Reach more people more often

He even left instructions for any others who might wish to try it, and fervently believed that this method was the genesis of wood nymphs and giants. Science may have been a lot less advanced hundreds of years ago, but this was still a bizarre hypothesis that looks even odder to us today. Nikola Tesla Nikola Tesla attended the Austrian Polytechnic in Graz but never graduated. Nonetheless, he was possibly the most inventive and zaniest scientist who ever lived. When not producing bolts of artificial lightning that measured up to 135 feet long, Tesla worked on inventions such as a particle gun that he believed might bring down tens of thousands of airplanes and spoke of anti-gravity flying machines. Some of his saner research included extensive work on AC electrical currents and studies involving X-rays. As he got older, Tesla took his apparent obsessive-compulsive disorder to higher levels, becoming fixated on the number three and developing an extreme aversion to touching human hair. Famously, the renowned inventor believed that he had been in contact with extraterrestrials, and he also managed to fall head over heels in love with a pigeon – from which he believed his feelings were reciprocated.
