The mother of all ball games needs a helping hand BRIGHT Croquet Club boasts one of the richest histories of any sporting club in the North East. Founded in 1904, the club has rolled on through the decades, but has struggled in recent times with falling membership. Club president Joan Thompson and member Wally Pearce hope the community will get behind the club to keep it running. Story page 2. PHOTO: Leah Anderson-Byrne

The mother of all ball games needs a helping hand By BELINDA HARRISON THE ball rolls along, a green line trailing out behind as it cuts a path through the crisp frost, revealing the pristine billiard-like surface beneath. The swing and weight of the chosen mallet must be strong during the first game on a winter’s morn; the challenge in getting the ball through the hoop differing immensely once the sun melts the ice and the ball skids easily across the wellmaintained lawn. Through wind, sunshine, rain and now advanced age, members of the Bright Croquet Club spend up to six days a week all year round ‘running hoops’ so they can keep active and socialise with friends. While there was no frost the day I went and met the wonderful members of the Bright Croquet Club, I took the challenge of getting the ball through the hoop very seriously - and of course crowned myself champion when it went through the first time, before handing the mallet back in case it was simply beginner’s luck. Founded in 1904, by the wives of gold miners who were banned from entering the bowling club, the Bright Croquet Club is the second oldest croquet club in Victoria and offers three kinds of croquet - Association (competition), Golf and Ricochet. But, this once-thriving club is doing it tough with membership down to only 27, and the age range of those members between 63 and 97 plus one junior. Earlier this year, the club sent out a letter to local businesses, alerting them to their plight and requesting help via sponsorship. “Green fees are $5 and a yearly membership is only $100
but out of that we are lucky to get $20 per member which has to pay our electricity and water and keep the court maintained,” club president Joan Thompson said. “The rest pays for insurance and North East District Croquet Association (NEDCA) and Victorian Croquet Association Fees. “We still have another 18 years to run on our lease with the Alpine Shire and we want to be here for at least that long. “We have a professional greenkeeper who comes in every week, which some people think is an unnecessary expense, but to keep the courts in tip-top shape and attract more members or casual visitors, we need a qualified professional as none of us have the expertise to maintain it ourselves,” Club secretary John Hart added. Following the letter drop, a number of local businesses have come on board to keep the hoops running and the lights on, but more are needed. “Paul Medding from Roksalt Fish and Chippery, Donna Rupp from 4 Peaks Real Estate, Doctors Duff and O’Brien from Bright Medical, Kay Alexander from Alexanders National Real Estate and Dawson Paech from Dawson’s Rural Supplies have taken up sponsorship and we are so grateful to them for their support,” Joan said. “We’d also encourage anyone young or old to come along and have a go - we can teach you the rules and supply equipment. “We are a very social bunch and the game itself offers gentle exercise and is an excellent low impact alternative for older citizens, or those recovering from injury or surgery.” First played in Ireland in the 11th century, croquet is known as the mother of all ball games

◆ OLD SCHOOL: The Bright Croquet Club is the second oldest club in Victoria.
and was once described as a cross between billiards and chess due to its combination of mental awareness and strategy. “Public opinion is that croquet is an old person’s game, and while that might be true for our club at this particular moment, it’s not true of the sport overall,” Joan said. “In 2013, Robert Fletcher from Terang in the Western District was World Champion in Association Croquet and he was only 19 years old.” The truth of this can be seen in Bright P-12 College’s physical education teacher, Matt Pywell, who has been taking his year 10 students to the club for more than five years. Mr Pywell understands just how vital such clubs are for local communities and the younger generations and is happy to take the kids year after year. “I wanted to focus on what
alternatives to tennis were available to seniors in town but I had never played croquet myself and I had no knowledge of what the sport was about,” Matt said. “We have a volleyball unit in the class where the kids have a four or five week block to talk about and manage their own group. “They have to elect a president, vice president, secretary, make up a draw, appoint a coach and go through selection as to who will play. “What’s really great about that unit is that when they go to the croquet club or the lawn bowls club, they understand what goes on behind the scenes and they appreciate what has to happen to make it viable. “At first the kids ask, ‘why croquet’ (as the sport I’ve chosen) and are quite angsty about
it, but once they get there, meet the members and learn to play, they get really into it and it gets pretty competitive. “Sports like croquet need more young people to be involved and help manage fees, do the accounting and of course to tap into all the new ways of marketing and promotion. “I’m looking at it as a long term investment for our community - I’m playing the long game. “What I mean by that is that I want to give these kids a taste of these games now so that in say five to 15 years or even later on in life they will remember how much they enjoyed it, what it took to keep it going and they’ll want to go along and be part of their local community’s club, wherever that is.” The Bright Croquet Club is known locally and by interstate and overseas visitors as a club

with fantastic hospitality and has the best court in Victoria, which is no mean feat. Association croquet is played when a competition arises, with golf croquet played Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays and ricochet croquet on Wednesdays and Saturdays with Mondays set aside for maintenance every week. “Over the years we have received grants to re-roof the clubhouse and fence the courts, but anything else that needs doing is done by volunteers so we don’t ask for help very often, but we could really do with some help right now,” Joan said. For more information about sponsorship, to help in any other way or to have a hit, drop into the Bright Croquet Club in Burke Street or contact the secretary, John Hart, on 0408 543 057.

Sam Miranda King Valley 2019 Merlot RIDERS trying out the gravel cycling trails which have now been mapped in the King Valley enjoyed spectacular conditions for the launch of the event. The sun shone brightly and temperatures neared the midtwenties which is unusual for May and I’m sure it felt even warmer for those tackling the 85 kilometre trek. I can see the attraction because the landscape between Whitfield and Lake Buffalo in Myrtleford is absolutely beautiful - God’s own country you might say - although I think I’ll stick to enjoying it from the comfort of the car. The climate and region is often reflected well in the local wines and that seems to be the case with the Sam Miranda King Valley Merlot. Sam Miranda says the cool ripening conditions of the King Valley give the fruit time to ripen and develop the classic varietal flavours of this style. A medium-bodied red it has a shiny ruby red colour and fresh, vibrant aroma of ripe, cherry fruit. It’s mouth-watering and kind

of juicy to taste, generous with a tumble of prickle berry and cherry freshness and quite soft on the palate. A red that’s enjoyable drinking on its own, it also goes really well with game like roast duck, or leaner cuts like roo or venison which are complemented by a clean, fruit-forward wine. It’s a nice way to get better acquainted with your surrounds. BOTTLE PRICE: About $25.

◆ HAPPY AND HEALTHY: You can stay healthy in autumn by following a few simple tips.

Autumn is in the wind CRISP mornings followed by sunny days with a gentle breeze blowing announce the arrival of autumn. So do all those fallen leaves and the sniffle you feel coming on. As we move into another season, it’s time to check in with our health and do what we can now to ensure we stay as healthy as possible during winter. For many of us, 2020 meant spending lots of time at home, snuggled up in blankets with hot cups of tea or coffee, juggling working from home alongside home schooling or toddlers we could only take outside for a finite amount of time each day. The upside of seeing fewer people meant that cold and flu symptoms were not passed around in workplaces
Let us help you create a beautiful garden this autumn
and by extension, to the home front. While we have returned to some semblance of normality and gone back to our offices and schools and daycare centres, it’s time to remember all those things we did two years ago before COVID and unprecedented were the catchphrases heard in every conversation. Local clinics have begun administering not only COVID vaccines to those in high risk tiers, but annual flu shots and it’s a good idea to organise yours now along with an annual check up if you’re overdue. In addition to visiting the doctor, don’t forget to keep up with any exercise program you’ve started and find ways to incorporate it into your day if you’re finding it hard to get out in
those cold mornings or evenings. Get your daily dose of Vitamin D by going for a walk around the block at lunch time - not only will it give you a vitamin hit, it will also give you a break from your screen and reset for the afternoon session of work. Healthy eating can be achieved by choosing foods such as eggs and orange fruits and vegetables which give you vitamin A, colourful fruits and vegetables which are high in vitamin C and nuts, beans, oysters, whole grains, and seeds which have vitamin E and zinc. Meditation and mindfulness, specialist counselling and taking time to relax alone or with friends is also important so make sure you reach out and take time out when you need it.

One current theory is that yawning is a brain cooling mechanism “that functions to promote arousal and alertness,” according to Andrew Gallup, an assistant professor of psychology at the State University of New York Polytechnic Institute in Utica, who has published studies on the topic. Yawning consists of a deep inhalation of air accompanied by a powerful stretching of the jaw, followed by a shorter expiration of air and rapid closing of the jaw. “Collectively, these patterns of behavior increase blood flow to the skull, which can have a number of effects, one of which is cerebral cooling,” Dr. Gallup said. “When our body temperature is warmer, we feel more tired and sleepy, and it could be that evening yawns are triggered to try to antagonize sleep onset, so we yawn at night in an attempt to maintain some state of arousal or alertness.”
But one thing is certain - yawning is contagious. One person’s yawn can trigger yawning among an entire group. People who are more empathic are believed to be more easily influenced to yawn by others’ yawns; brain imaging studies have shown that when humans watch other people yawn, brain areas known to be involved in social function are activated. Even dogs yawn in response to seeing their owners - or even strangers - yawn, and contagious yawning has been noted in other animals as well. The spread of yawning could potentially serve to “promote coordinated arousal among members of the group, synchronizing their mental state, potentially protecting it by alerting it to external threats more rapidly than it would be otherwise,” Dr. Gallup said. Are you yawning yet?
PEACH
TECH & SCIENCE
The great yawning mystery YAWNING. It’s something each of us does, probably several times a day. Yet believe it or not, no one really knows for sure just why we yawn. We yawn when we’re tired, but also when we wake from a night’s sleep. We yawn when we’re bored, but also when we’re anxious, or hungry, or about to start a new activity. Even reading about yawning makes people yawn. In fact, you are probably yawning right now. But the physiological purpose of a yawn remains a mystery. Until about 30 years ago, scientists explained yawning as a way for the body to take in a large amount of air in order to increase oxygen levels in the blood in response to oxygen deprivation. But the oxygenation hypothesis was discarded after being disproved by a series of experiments published in 1987.

GONE FISHING
nemedia.com.au
TALKING BUSINESS
◆ ON THE BITE: Any stream that holds trout is worth fishing at the moment. The trout are biting very well with larger minnows accounting for a lot of fish.
Redfin, trout on the bite in lakes, rivers REDFIN and trout seem to be the species’ to target at the moment. Right around North East Victoria both species are fishing very well. Lake Buffalo has been producing both redfin and trout. Redfin are being caught in big numbers up there with boat and kayak anglers having the most success. Shore based anglers were also doing well, but the lake has risen around a metre over the last week and catches seem to have dropped off for shore based anglers for some reason. The Victorian Fisheries Authority recently stocked a lot of trout into Lake Buffalo. Most were small but some were large. I caught one of the larger ones, a brown trout of around 35cm casting a Berkley minnow off the boat ramp. Lake William Hovell was also stocked last week with 10,000 trout fingerlings. This is excellent news as many of the small trout stocked into both lakes will swim up into the tributaries above the lakes, and some will also go over the wall into the river below.
with Rob Alexander
WANGARATTA
No doubt a fair few will also get eaten by redfin which is a bit of a bugger. The trout are running hot in many of the faster flowing waters at the moment. The Mitta Mitta River seems to be producing quite a few larger trout over 60cm in length. As the trout are preparing to spawn, or in some streams already spawning, larger minnows seem to be working very well. For those chasing Murray cod, Lake Mulwala continues to be the standout fishery at the moment. I have seen photos of a few cod caught at Lake Eildon, and I know both the Broken and Ovens rivers are giving up a few cod here and there, but by far Lake Mulwala remains the most consistent Murray cod fishery this week.
