What a wild life By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE

FOR Myrtleford’s Danni Townsend-O’Neil, Australian wildlife is a feature both outside and inside the home. Danni is a wildlife carer and rescuer for the Myrtleford area and currently has four baby wombats set up in cots in her living room. Her love for looking after wildlife began nine years ago when she moved to the town and was raising orphaned baby goats and sheep. “Before we moved to the area we were living in Melbourne, I had just sold my business called Red Wagon and I was running my own fashion label called Tickets for Coco,” she said. “I also owned ‘type key’ which was all handmade jewellery from old typewriter pieces and I was also known for my frozen Charlotte Doll pendants which were dug up from the factory in Germany after the war. “I never really had any other career aspirations. “I would describe myself as a gypsy when it comes to career decisions; I would get my heart set on something that no one else was doing and I would be like a dog with a bone and start my new venture.” In the past year she completed her mentorship under the Beechworth Wildlife Shelter and can now become her own registered shelter to take on foster carers of her own.

Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus in dogs MACK, a 35kg, seven year old male Labradoodle presented to the clinic severely depressed and almost unable to walk. He had attended a family barbeque and had been absolutely fine earlier in the evening making the most of the abundant food and his good looks. His abdomen was severely swollen and Mack was making repeated attempts to vomit with no result except for saliva regurgitation which he could not swallow. The abdomen was enlarged and tympanic (tight like an over-inflated basketball) and an x-ray quickly confirmed that Mack had a bloated stomach which had twisted, trapping the gas in the stomach. Emergency therapy was immediately instituted to restore Mack’s failing circulation and within one hour he was on the surgery table having the twisted stomach corrected. Approximately 10 litres of gastric content was collected via a stomach tube during the procedure and his spleen and stomach appeared healthy and viable. His stomach was untwisted back to its normal position and sutured to the right abdominal wall to prevent a recurrence. Mack made an uneventful recovery and was discharged 24 hours later. He was a very lucky dog. The survival rate for this surgery can be as low as 50 per cent and Mack’s luck was that he was noticed that night.

with Dr Keely McGreggor, Ovens & Kiewa Veterinary Hospital If he was found Sunday morning (if he was not already dead) the chances of survival would have been considerably worse. Often by this time the stomach wall and spleen are no longer viable and any chance of survival requires the surgical removal of the spleen and part of the stomach. There is also a very high risk of acute death after the pressure and twist is corrected due to endotoxins in the dead and dying tissue returning to the circulation. Gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV) is a serious, life threatening condition that can be seen in all breeds of dogs but there are well documented risk factors. Male dogs, increasing age, being underweight or lean, being fed one large meal per day and having a shy or fearful temperament carry increase the risk of this condition. Breeds with deep, narrow thoraxes such as Boxers, Wolf hounds, Irish setters, Beagles and Standard Poodles are more likely to present with this condition. Exercise before and/or after eating, feeding with bowls elevated, rapid eating and the eating (gulping) of air can be predisposing factors leading to GDV.

◆ SUMMER BEAUTY: Verticordia centipeda is an Australian native not widely known by gardeners, despite there being around 150 species. PHOTO: Helen Van Riet

Venticordia - the turner of hearts VERTICORDIAS, commonly called Feather flowers, are extraordinarily beautiful Australian natives which are not widely known by gardeners. There are about 150 species, ranging from prostrate groundcovers to medium to large shrubs and small trees. The first species collected was in 1791 near Albany in Western Australia. By the end of the 19th century approximately 70 species were named. In 1991, a major research project led by Alexander George and others, named over 75 further species. Verticordia centipeda (pictured) is one of these species. Verticordias belong to the Myrtaceae family. The name - Verticordia - is a Latin epithet of Venus, the Turner of Hearts. To Venus, the Roman goddess of love, the myrtle bush was sacred. Plants from the Myrtaceae family are known as ‘myrtles’. The evolution of Verticordia as a separate genus in the botanical

isolation of Western Australia has been estimated at about five million years. They are most closely related to other members of the Myrtaceae family, such as Chamelacium, Darwinia and Homoranthus, differing in the structure of flowers which have fringed or toothed feathery petals. Flowering can be spectacular and long-lasting during spring and summer. Flowers are shades of white, cream, orange, yellow, pink, red, maroon and purple. In many species, flowers change their tint after pollination, for example, turning from palest pink to dark red. This is a signal to pollinators that some flowers are no longer worth visiting, thus increasing the chances of successful pollination. Extensive land-clearing for farming, grazing, and commercial flower harvesting and mining has led to the extinction of previously known species. Despite the setting aside of areas for conservation, in prac-

tice there is no known infallible way to protect native vegetation from destruction. Research continues into this little-known species. Cultivation of Verticordia has been a focus of the Botanic Gardens at Kings Park, Perth. In 1995 the Gardens were growing and displaying over 100 different species. Verticordias suitable for the home garden are available from specialist nurseries. Popular varieties are V. plumosa, V. mitchelliana and V. chrysantha. Chamelacium x Verticordia ‘Paddy’s Pink’ is a vigorous hybrid worthy of a place in the home garden. Verticordias require a freedraining, slightly acid soil with moisture at depth, an open position and protection from cold winds. Like many Western Australian indigenous plants which are sensitive to excess phosphorus, fertilise lightly and with caution.

Politini Wines 2016 Nero d’Avola Shiraz IT was perfect weather for camping over the New Year and it was wonderful to meet a pair of intrepid travellers who decided to base themselves in Whitfield for the week. They were drawn by the region’s wineries and making their escape in a vintage caravan, beautifully decked out to suit two long-time friends who enjoyed adventurous holidays but a bit of comfort too. It may have been modest in size but it was easy for the ladies to move, and no expense had been spared when it came to the essentials such as comfy chairs, good wine glasses and fine linen to sleep in. It also gave them room to store the bottles they planned to buy and take home from some of their favourite family wineries. I’m hoping they put together good selection and included some of Politini’s Nero d’Avola Shiraz. Nero d’Avola is apparently Sicily’s most popular grape variety and I’m a big fan too. The wine has a dark purplered colour and a vibrant, fruity aroma which reminds me of ripe cherry and berry, with a hint of savoury oak. The flavour leans more toward raspberry and blackcurrant fruit which is further enhanced

by a pleasantly soft and mellow mouthfeel. The light oak ensures it remains savoury, and it’s great with meaty dishes like a steak or a homemade burger made from the best local beef and cooked medium rare on a charcoal grill. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s just what those ladies were keeping cool in their Engel. COST: About $26 a bottle.

This Day in History, 1935 THE Corowa Free Press reported the following incident. Mr James Culhane of Coreen was on this day (or thereabouts) travelling along one of the district’s roads when he noticed two snakes fighting. Mr Culhane, being of sporting inclinations, stopped to watch. As the fight progressed, one snake began to swallow the other snake. However, the snake being swallowed managed to wrap the end of its tail around a nearby fence, and, in pulling itself free, turned the other snake inside out. Tellers of tall snake tales on the Victorian side of the border had to admit, when they heard the story they had been temporarily stumped.

ND QUEENSLA FRUIT FLY Y COMMUNIT UPDATE

New season populations

Queensland Fruit Fly (Qfly) numbers increased in urban areas throughout the region in December 2020, representing the start of the new season’s fruit fly population. If not controlled, these populations will explode to large numbers causing significant damage to fruit across the Goulburn Murray Valley (GMV) from February to April 2021. Higher levels of rainfall, along with increased humidity and fruit set, as a result of the La Niña weather pattern occurring across much of SouthEastern Australia, provides favourable conditions for further population expansion. Fruit fly hot spots

data as Qfly hot spots: (XURD .\DEUDP 0RRURRSQD 1DJDPELH 1XPXUNDK 6KHSSDUWRQ These sites cover a large part of the GMV region and if not managed efficiently, hot spots will spread from these sites into the rest of the region immediately surrounding them. New generations will emerge from these flies and spread in a ripple effect further out into commercial crops nearby in autumn – when most commercial crops in the region ripen. Urban control essential

The following urban areas have been identified through trapping

The majority of the Qfly trapped in the last four months of 2020 were found in urban locations. These urban fruit flies, if not controlled sufficiently, will expand over the next two generations and spread into commercial orchards in late summer and autumn. The efforts of home gardeners to control Qfly now in the summer of 2021, will be of immense use to commercial growers and the entire community in autumn 2021. Community-wide monitoring and protection against Qfly will allow home garden

Menstrual cycle myths TODAY we are looking at common women’s health questions and some situations where you can work with a naturopath to investigate. 1. Are flooding or heavy periods normal? Answer: No. Your blood flow should be manageable meaning that you don’t fear flooding, pass big multiple clots and can go three hours without changing a pad. You shouldn’t feel debilitated or exhausted after your bleed. 2. Is pain normal with a period? Answer: No. Period pain should not stop you going to work or school. You may need to reduce or stop exercise for the bleed days. Pain should not last more than one or two days and should not require strong pain medication to control.

3. How long should your cycle go for? Answer: A cycle length starts on day one of the bleed until the next bleed. 21 to 35 days is normal. Either side of this needs to be checked for a healthy luteal phase and ovulation and causes for dysregulation. 4. If I don’t want to have a baby I don’t need ovulation, do I? Answer: Ovulation is an important health maker. If you are not using contraception and are not ovulating, or are having irregular cycles (more than 35 days) you should investigate. 5. What is healthy blood flow? Answer: Three to seven days of red blood is considered healthy. Very short, light pink bleeds, or very long heavy dark bleeds can indicate stress, nutritional deficiencies or hormonal dysfunction.

6. Oral Contraceptive Pill (the Pill) is the only reliable option for period issues like pain, PMS and contraception). This is wrong. There are many medical and natural ways to manage period pain, PMS and contraception. Exploring the options that work best for you is important. These may change over time and need review prior to having babies, after babies, at menopause or with new relationships or health changes. We can discuss these with you. These and more symptoms are commonly experienced by woman but they don’t have to be tolerated. Sophie and Belinda can guide you on your way to a healthy, manageable and reduced pain/pain free cycle.

What a wild life for Danni

“When you first start off you foster under another shelter for about a year before you become a registered shelter yourself,” she said. “From here I really want to raise money to build a proper shelter in my backyard so I can take on more animals and have a space for people to learn and connect. “I’ve had 12 babies on the go at once before and it’s exhausting for one person to do so I’d love to take on carers and have volunteers help out.” When asked what she loves about it, Danni said there was so much to what she does that she enjoys. “Waking up in the morning and having baby wombats playing in your bed is pretty fun,” she said. “There have been so many highlights; one I remember was my first koala rescue. “They look so sweet and fluffy, but

boy do they have attitudes; I got a few nasty scratches and a bite through the glove but I came out ok. “The koala just needed some TLC and fattening up; he was later released back to his territory. “As for challenges, there are some every day. “My day starts at around 5am; I get up and prepare bottles, feed what animals I have in care at the time, clean the bedding and play areas, do the washing, pick grass, prepare the milk for the next feed and, in between all of this, I am always called out to rescues. “I have the training to euthanise seriously injured wildlife which is never a nice thing to do but I get through it by knowing that they are out of pain and will go to a much nicer place. “After the rescue stage, months and months of care, rehabilitation and watching them grow bigger and getting them prepared to be able to start

the release process feels great. “It’s actually very bittersweet, even though my heart breaks and I miss them all dearly I also find it to be a very rewarding time.” Danni said the main thing she wants to achieve from registering as a shelter is to raise awareness for what carers do and to promote the educational side of it for local kids. “There is a nice side to what I do, I feel so privileged to see these beautiful baby creatures and look after them so I want kids to experience that too,” she said. “A lot of people also don’t know what to do when they hit our native animals ... many people freak out or get embarrassed and don’t think to stop and check the pouches of mothers for babies.” For more information or if you want to report injured wildlife go to https:// www.reachoutwildlifeaustralia.org/ or call Danni on 0405 193 807.

GONE FISHING

◆ MUD MARLIN: A Horseshoe Lagoon European carp caught using sweetcorn kernels suspended under a bubble float last Friday.

Mud marlin are great fun to catch for kids LOVE them or hate them, the European carp are one of the hardest fighting freshwater fish species here in Victoria. More people are enjoying catching them, and are doing a good deed to the environment by removing them from the water. Kids in particular love fishing for carp, and I have found a waterway that is absolutely loaded with very large carp right on the outskirts of Wangaratta that the kids can get to easily on their pushbikes. Horseshoe lagoon reserve is located at the end of Dale Street on the northern side of Wangaratta. If you Google search “Dale Street Wangaratta” you will find it. While walking around that area last week I noticed a lot of very large carp in the lagoon. I returned with a fishing rod and caught a big one, using corn for bait under a bubble float. There are heaps of big carp in there just waiting to be pulled out. But if you are going to fihs it please be careful of snakes, and please take your rubbish home

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA

with Roberta Horne as it is a beautiful reserve with abundant wildlife. Reports of cricket score size catches of redfin from Lake Hume are continuing to flood in. As with last week’s report, the larger fish are all being caught out deep - eight to 12 metre depth seems to be a good starting point. Anglers casting spinners and soft plastics around the edges of the lake are catching heaps of small redfin in the shallows which is providing a lot of fun, especially for the kids. My last three Murray cod fishing trips to the lower Ovens River around Peechelba have resulted in a fishless trip, seven cod, then another fishless trip. So the Murray cod fishing in the lower Ovens River appears to still be quite inconsistent.

AgBiz Assist ◆ HERE TO HELP: Running a small business can be tricky, but you don’t have to do it alone.

Where to for small business GENERALLY, small business is defined as an enterprise employing less than 20 people and, when we note that only 2 percent of Victorian businesses actually fall outside this category, it’s easy to see that small business has borne the brunt of the bushfire and COVID-19 fiscal impacts. The angst created by the unprecedented economic conditions experienced during 2020 has far reaching impacts on every aspect of the social, physical and emotional wellbeing of our communities. In regional Victoria we know that a whopping 26 percent of business is generated by micro, family and small

business operators with only 1 to 5 employees in both well-established and emerging enterprises. We also know from our decades of experience in assisting business that running a small business can be challenging at the best of times. We understand that sometimes hard work, adaptability and resilience are just not enough. Our speciality is working with small business, farmers and rural and regional communities to help them navigate their way through tough times. Many clients report that just having someone to bounce ideas off is of particular value.
