Back on the road to Wangaratta again
◆ HAPPY ANNIVERSARY: Mark Stephens (AKA Lazy Harry) launched his first album at Kate’s Cottage in Glenrowan where wife Wendy painted the fabulous mural of Ned in his prison cell (pictured). PHOTO: Belinda Harrison

BEECHWORTH’S loss is definitely Wangaratta’s gain with well-known regional identities Wendy and Mark (Lazy Harry) Stephens moving back to the rural city. In 1974, following the birth of their son Matthew, Mark and Wendy decided to relocate from Melbourne to the North East and bought a home in Graham Avenue, Wangaratta where Wendy had a beautiful art studio - and won the Albury Rotary Art Prize for a piece she created there. In Melbourne, Mark had been teaching history at Wesley College while Wendy was nursing at the Royal Women’s Hospital and for almost two decades after they arrived, Mark taught year 11 and 12 history and English at the TAFE College and Wendy was nursing. In 1976, their daughter Jacqui was born at the Wangaratta hospital, completing their family and Mark and Wendy were involved in a number of community groups and organisations. “Wendy directed and produced ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and ‘Twelfth Night’ with large casts and audiences and also ‘The Boyfriend’ with Wangaratta Music Theatre,” Mark said. “At the same time, we both served for many years as judges for the Zonta Theatre Excellence Awards in the North East.” “We were very busy and so happy to be engaged with the community,” Wendy added. “Mark’s love of music and Australian history combined during our years in Wangaratta and the prolific entertainer/singer/songwriter and recording artist ‘Lazy Harry’ was born.” “The name ‘Lazy Harry’ came from the traditional bush ballad ‘We Camped at Lazy Harry’s on the Road to Gundagai’,” Mark explained. “I sang the song at every gig and it reflects so nicely the hard working, fun loving ethos of our early pioneers. “My music career began as a choir boy in Melbourne and I still believe the pipe organ is the “King” of all instruments.”

Meet the galah GALAHS are a common site in our backyards and mostly spend their days sheltering in trees or shrubs before congregating later in the day in huge noisy flocks. It is not uncommon to see them almost completely covering a tree, or a large group on a grassed area feeding on grass seeds. Male and female galahs mate for life. They will spend most of their time together in pairs, eating, cleaning and playing together. They are a very social and affectionate bird. The male and female galahs look almost identical with their pink and grey feathers and can grow to 36cm long, with the males usually slightly larger. To help you tell them apart, male galahs have dark-brown or black eyes while the females have pink or red ones. Galah pairs will continue to return to the same nest site every year and will defend it from other galahs or animals. Both parents get the nest ready for the eggs by lining it with soft eucalyptus leaves. Galahs like to keep their beaks
with Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife sharp by chewing on branches. While breeding, they will do most of their chewing on one branch near the nest which is used as a sign to others that this nest is occupied. The female galah will lay four to six eggs in her tree hollow but unfortunately only half will usually survive. However once the chicks make it to adulthood they will usually live for about 25 years in the wild or up to 80 years when kept as pets. When the young galahs are ready to leave their nest the parents will continue to look after them for a few weeks but then they will become independent. Like other cockatoos, the galah is an excellent mimic of voices and sounds. Their vocal talents, along with their colour and hilarious personalities, have made them a very popular pet choice.

Corporal Hitler’s Pistol FOR his 35th novel, Tom Keneally ensures that his reputation as Australia’s pre-eminent writer remains intact. Winner of the Booker Prize in 1982 for Schindler’s Ark which was adapted into the 1993 Best Picture Academy Award winner Schindler’s List, Keneally’s writing encompasses early classics such as The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith, Australians Volume 1, 2 and 3 through to the sensational Dickens Boy. Corporal Hitler’s Pistol proves that a great storyteller improves with age. Set primarily in the north New South Wales coastal town of Kempsey in 1933 (an area Tom Keneally grew up in, although he was born in Sydney), the characters and townspeople are the subject of gossip, rumour and innuendo as happens in all country towns. While the main character is dairy farmer and returned World War I hero of German/Australian descent, Bert Webber, who is rumoured to possess a pistol that had belonged to Corporal Hitler this story has interconnecting characters and stories woven through it and the ensemble characters fascinate and flesh out this book. There is Flo Honeywood, wife of an eminent local builder, who spots a young aboriginal boy from the camp outside Kempsey who possesses an uncanny likeness to her husband. Chicken Dalton, the effeminate and stylish pianist at the Victoria Cinema who rouged his cheeks to give the impression he suffers from TB. Irish born farm manager Johnny Costigan, with mysterious links to the 1922 Irish Civil War and the repressed Christian Webber (son of Bert and Annie) who quietly pines for Chicken Dalton. The storyline centres on Bert’s first visit to the local cinema in 14 years when, during the newsreel screened before the main picture, Bert recognises German politician Adolf Hitler as
the skinny moustached Corporal Hitler he encountered back in the war. His recollection and memory of the encounter causes Bert to suffer a fit and his subsequent breakdown leads to electroconvulsive therapy and New Age mesmerism to help Bert heal. Continual flashbacks to both World War I and the Irish civil war highlight the mental strain and continual effects of exposure to extreme violence. Use of phrasing is superbly old school Australian and include ‘beat that for a quinella’,’you talk flash’ and ‘the
hallway smelt like polish and virginity’. Set in a country town and era so well known to rural Australians, Corporal Hitler’s Pistol is not afraid to cover early 20th century taboos such as black and white relationships, mental health issues, war and same sex relationships. This is yarn-telling at its best and only a master wordsmith like Tom Keneally could bring all the strands together while heading towards an emotive and compelling ending. I would recommend highly for bookclubs and for that person who loves Australian history.

Testing children’s hearing
Campbells of Rutherglen Rutherglen Topaque ONE of the most frustrating aspects about social media lately is some people’s willingness to believe everything they see or hear and then share it around with others like it was fact. It has given every Tom, Dick and Harriet a platform to voice their opinion on subjects they know little or nothing about and to pass on stories they have heard in a form of electronic Chinese Whispers. Call me crazy, but I reckon it’s wiser to ask the opinion of doctors about health care and scientists about science and stick to seeking advice from your friends on where to go and what to wear. I’m also happy to give advice to friends if they ask about what they should drink because I do a lot of it and I tend to know their taste and what they are going to like. For one with a passion for fortifieds, it’s Campbells of Rutherglen Topaque. This beautiful drop which is five years old has lovely amber colour and a heady aroma which is rich with caramel honeyed fruitiness While sweet with toffee and berry, it still has a fresh and light quality, making it really interest-

ing and complex and worth taking time over, before noticing the resonant oak at the finish. It’s a delight for those who like a little sweetness and complexity without it being syrupy. With a bit of cheese or chocolate it’s a cruisy way to end the day. And having celebrated 150 years of family winemaking last year, I’m pretty confident Campbells know what they’re doing. About $22.
This Day in History, 1952 THE Wangaratta Flour Mills could trace its ancestry back, through several owners and re-builds to Wangaratta’s first mill built by William Clark and D. H. Evans. When it was re-opened on this day in 1952 in a new location, with all new facilities, it was proudly declared to be the most modern flour milling centre in Australia. The huge concrete silos and associated buildings beside the railway line in Alumatta Street were typical of the explosive growth of Wangaratta in the years following World War II. The official opening was performed by Robert Menzies.
MANY adults may have some idea about what is involved for them to have a hearing test - push a button when you hear a range of beeps. It can be quite a different experience for younger children. For children between about six months of age and school entry, the hearing test is frequently designed as a game. Audiologists are experienced at working out the relevant test procedures for each individual client, although not all clinics are equipped to assess children’s hearing. Newborn babies have a hearing check in the first few days of life, usually at the hospital. This involves testing the response of the brain to sound while the baby is asleep to show whether hearing is adequate in each ear for speech and language development. For an infant who can sit unsupported, warbled tones are presented through speakers on each side of the child. Each time the child turns their head to correctly localise the sound, they are rewarded. Most young children are sufficiently interested in this game to respond even when the tone is very soft and a good indication about the hearing can be obtained. This task can be used to show whether hearing is adequate for speech and language development. As the young child gets a little older, often around age three, a different technique is used. We call it ‘play audiometry’. They are encouraged to make a play action, like putting a peg into a board or a block into a bucket, each time they hear a sound. This test can identify whether hearing is normal Around the time of school entry, a child can respond in much the same way as adults might be asked to do, without the game. For both school-aged children and adults, we also check the clarity of what is heard using some words at soft levels. At any age, another test, called tym-

panometry, is used to show how the middle ear is functioning. Inserting a small tip into the ear canal and changing the pressure gently against the eardrum provides information about whether any middle ear fluid or ear popping problems exist. This test is very handy to see whether children’s middle ear problems have resolved. Please let us know if you have con-
cerns about your child’s hearing at any age. Other reasons for concern might be some delay in speech and language development or middle ear infections. There is a test available for every age and ability level and we find that many parents enjoy watching their children respond during a test. Our clinic phone number is (03) 5722 4433.

In 1981, Lazy Harry’s first album was launched at Kate’s Cottage in Glenrowan. “I researched the Ned Kelly saga and wrote and recorded The Original Ned Kelly Story album on tapes - which have since been upgraded to CDs,” Mark said. “That album has played all day, every day at Kate’s Cottage for the past 40 years - which surely has to be some sort of world record.” “Ned has been very good to us,” Wendy agreed. Lazy Harry now has 14 albums to his name and has performed throughout the USA, Canada, UK, Europe and Australia, and his new song ‘The COVID Rock’ is being played by Macca on Australia All Over. “I have toured everywhere, singing about our country and telling folks about our history, it’s fantastic,” Mark said. By 1996, Beechworth was becoming a booming mecca for history tourism with up to 20 coachloads of local and international tourists arriving almost every day. “We were spending so much of our time at Beechworth with Mark performing and sharing his love and knowledge of the local history that it made
sense for us to move there,” Wendy said. Mark and Wendy designed and built ‘Beechworth House’, a premier Bed and Breakfast and signed contracts with AAT Kings, Australian Pacific Tours and Fly Buys to accommodate and entertain their passengers. They also created a Beechworth B&B Co-operative. The Stephens’ have always been actively involved with the community - Wendy with theatre and the arts and Mark with music and history and both have been long-serving correspondents for the Ovens & Murray Advertiser newspaper in Beechworth. Mark’s love of the ‘king of instruments’ and his commitment to his local town was evident when - after noting the sad state of disrepair of the historic William Anderson pipe organ at (Beechworth) Christ Church - he encouraged the locals to come together to help with its restoration. “We started the Farmer’s Market and with the help of a $30,000 grant from Heritage Victoria, the organ was restored to its former glory,” Mark said. He also recently found a photograph of the Beechworth Philharmonic Society c.1890 performing in the town hall in front of an English Concert pipe organ and it led to an Australia-wide search
with Mark finally locating the pipe organ in North Melbourne. “With funding from the local community, Indigo Shire Council and the Copland Foundation the original c.1850 English Concert pipe organ is now once again a fixture on the Town Hall stage,” Mark said. With the next chapter of their lives in motion, Mark and Wendy have decided that Wangaratta is an excellent choice for them to re-plant their roots. “We decided to return to Wangaratta because it is well placed between Beechworth and Glenrowan, it has so many opportunities for us in music and the arts, and we have so many friends there already,” Wendy said. “We are really looking forward to being involved again with music, theatre and the arts at Wangaratta,” Mark added. Mark said that although they retired from the B&B in 2007, they will never retire from music and the arts. “Wendy and I want to thank all our friends at Beechworth and Wangaratta and assure everyone that we will continue to be actively involved throughout the North East region,” he said. “It is the best place in the world to live, work and enjoy.”

GONE FISHING
MONEY MATTERS
with Win Securities Limited ◆ SMALL REDDIE: This tiny Waranga Basin redfin was caught five minutes before this report was written. I am pleased to say that it is the smallest of two fish caught, but only just.
Redfin and trout continue to delight local anglers THIS week’s fishing report is coming to you live from the shores of the Waranga Basin. It’s currently 10am, I have been fishing since 6am and have caught the whole sum of two small redfin. One was caught on a soft plastic and the other a small minnow, just casting from the bank. I did bring my kayak over, but it’s a bit windier than I would like so have decided to play it safe. I have heard a few reports of redfin being caught here recently, but nothing as serious as Lake Hume where the redfin and trout continue to bite very well. Lake Nillahcootie has been ticking over nicely, with those anglers lucky enough to get there in between windy days managing to catch a few yellowbelly on worms, yabbies and trolled lures. If you’re looking to take the
with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA kids fishing somewhere, head to Stanley Dam. I was up there a few days ago. There were fish rising all over the dam, but I struggled to catch any. I hooked one and lost it, and that was it. The trout are there, and they’re feeding. They’re there for the taking and they’re there for the kids. With easy access and heaps of fish there’s no better option to take the kids fishing at the moment.
◆ PERFECT MATCH: You might have found your perfect life partner, but how’s their credit history?
Three things you need to ask your partner before you apply for a home loan together BEFORE you apply for a home loan with your partner, there are a few discussions that you need to have that go a little beyond what you may know already. You’ve found someone you want to spend your life with - the hard part is over, right? Wrong. You know each other well enough to know whether or not you each blow the budget every month, but you probably don’t know each other’s complete credit history. So, before you buy a property together, there are plenty of discussions you need to have. Here are three of them. Have they defaulted on any payments? They might be relatively debt free now, but has this always been the case? One bad mark on a credit file, such as a late car payment or a default on a credit card, will change the approach you need to take when applying for finance. It doesn’t mean you can’t secure finance, but it may mean you need to apply to a specialist lender for a low documentation loan.
Local people, local places ...immerse yourself in the region
Your Mortgage and Finance Association of Australia (MFAA) approved finance broker can help you find the right lender and craft an application to avoid the heartbreak of continual rejection. That savings balance, where has it come from? If your partner has savings towards a deposit, that’s fantastic, but the balance is only one part of the equation that lenders consider. If he or she has managed to build up those savings over a good period of time, making regular contributions, and managing their savings well, lenders will consider this a positive indication of an ability to make repayments regularly. If, however, the savings are the result of a redundancy payout, a gift from family, or backing a good horse, they are still helpful as a deposit, but don’t indicate that ability to make repayments. Again, this is not the end of the world. You’ll be in a better position than you would without that balance, but may need expert help to put your application in the best light. If we did get into trouble, how
would you want to handle it? You must plan for every eventuality, even one you think is not likely. Having said that, this discussion isn’t so much about having a solid plan in place for the worst, as seeing how your partner would deal with difficulty. If one of you lost your job, or you had unexpected bills that seemed overwhelming, would they try to struggle through, not wanting to talk about it with you or with your finance broker, and potentially default on the loan? Or would they tackle it head on by visiting your finance broker or lender with you to make a plan to get through it without defaulting? Before you start looking for a home to share with the love of your life, an appointment with an MFAA approved finance broker can help you iron out the details and secure the finance that suits both of you.
