A TEAM of hardworking helpers have assisted a spritely local farmer keep her cattle safe and contained on her Carboor property, thanks to a practical state government initiative. Maisie Enders and her late husband Stan dedicated much of their lives to restoring their land and at 90 years old, Maisie now manages the 120 hectare farm by herself. The couple bought the property in 1953 and later practiced regenerative farming and holistic farm management. Maisie said it was her husband’s idea to put the entire farm under a conservation convenant in 2004, protecting the important habitat and their sustainable farming system forever. She said Stan planted a lot of trees before he died and she shared his interest in protecting the natural environment, doing her bit by caring for orphaned animals. “I’ve been looking after wildlife since the late fifties or early sixties,” she said. “I’ve had everything over the years, from tiny little pygmy possums to kangaroos and wallabies and even a couple of platypus.

Puppy socialisation GOT a new puppy? Socialise! When getting a new puppy there are many things you need to consider to keep them happy and healthy as they grow into adult dogs. This includes the very important time in your new puppy’s development, known as the ‘Socialisation Period’. So what is it? The ‘Socialisation Period’ is a critical time that occurs in the puppy’s life between the ages of three and 14 weeks. This period is the time where puppies form social relationships and form both good and bad associations. Hence what occurs during the socialisation period has long lasting effects and can be the beginning of many future problems. It is important that during the socialisation period you expose your puppy to lots of new experiences. These experiences must be positive for the puppy, rewarding and nonthreatening. Through this, the puppy will develop positive associations. Enrolling in a puppy class is a fantastic way for your puppy to be exposed
PET CORNER WANGARATTA RSPCA has many lovable creatures waiting for the perfect family to take them home. If you want to add a furry friend to your home, contact the RSPCA on (03) 5722 2874. with Amy Brown, Wangaratta Veterinary Clinic to these positive experience and it can be a fun learning experience for owners. As well as puppy classes, remember to introduce your puppy to family and friends and any of their pets too. However, whilst your puppy is still getting their initial vaccinations, they should only socialise with other dogs who are up to date with their vaccinations. As your puppy begins to make friends, be careful not to inadvertently expose your puppy to a negative socialisation experience. An example of this might be forcing your puppy to play and interact with another dog or person that is clearly causing your puppy distress, this can be counter-productive. So get out there in to the big wide world and have fun with your puppy. Contact your local vet for more information about enrolling in their first ever puppy class.

Grow your own tea garden WOULD you like to enjoy a home-grown cup of tea every morning? It is a very nice ritual and you can easily grow your own. If you don’t have a big backyard, you can grow your tea garden in pots. I have all my favourites: peppermint, lemon balm, lemon verbena, chamomile and calendula available just outside the back door. These herbs taste best when freshly picked or dried. The medicinal action is also much more obvious when you drink the fresh tea, compared to the teabag variety. If you have only sipped on a teabag of peppermint I encourage you to have a pot made from loose-leaf organic tea leaves - you won’t believe the difference. Once you become familiar with the distinct flavours and amazing therapeutic value of herbal teas you can mix and match your own perfect blends. To make a herbal infusion: You can make an infusion from the leaves or flowering tops of these herbs Place them into a pot or individual tea strainer Add hot water and let them steep for about 5 minutes (the darker the colour of your tea the higher the therapeutic benefit)
It is important for the tea to be quite dark as this is the active constituents and minerals of the plant infusing into the water. Discard the old tea leaves into your worm farm or compost - the worms love them. HERBAL TEA VARIETIES Nettle Flavour: Subtle, earthy Part used: Leaves or root. Do not add milk Therapeutic value: A great tonic. Rich in vitamins and minerals especially iron. Used for recovering from debilitating illness and to increase breast milk. Nettle tea is great skin food for eczema or acne Dandelion Flavour: Bitter, similar to coffee Part used: Root or leaves. Delicious with a little honey and soya milk Therapeutic value: The leaves are diuretic and the root a gentle laxative. Great for any sluggish digestive conditions. Again rich in vitamins and minerals Chamomile Flavour: Slightly sweet Part used: Flowering tops. Do not add milk Therapeutic value: Known as a carminative, chamomile is especially well known for its ability to
relieve wind, calm nervous digestion, promote sleep and relaxation. Drink after meals or before bed. Especially perfect for anxious or restless children and the elderly Peppermint Flavour: Minty, the fresh leaves have a really refreshing aftertaste Part used: Leaves. Do not add milk Therapeutic value: Also carminative, but a little stronger than chamomile. Very cooling and so great in hot conditions such as menopause and fever. Perfect for wind or after a rich meal. Do not consume more than one cup daily if you are breast-feeding as it can dry up breast milk Fennel Flavour: Aniseed Part used: Seeds. Combine with chamomile or peppermint Therapeutic value: Increases appetite and promotes digestive secretions to improve assimilation and absorption of food. Fantastic for trapped wind Sage (Avoid in lactation due to the drying abilities) Part used: Leaves. Do not add milk Therapeutic value: The base ingredient of most hot flush teas. Sage does not taste amazing but combine it with some peppermint for extra cooling effects

YOUR HEALTH Pizzini Wines
2018 Pietra Rossa Sangiovese THE importance of having good soil is something that can’t be overestimated by anyone who wants to grow something successfully. It doesn’t matter how well you feed, water or nurture, unless you are lucky enough to live on a rich and naturally fertile bit of earth, it will need to be improved if you want something to flourish. I’m often asked how come my passionfruit flowers and fruits for months and I really don’t know for sure, but as well as lots of sun and water, it’s the chook pen behind it that keeps it well fed. At the same time I couldn’t grow a carrot if my life depended on it - root vegetables don’t like my dirt no matter what I do so I concentrate on the stuff that like living at my place. The Pizzini family have been growing Sangiovese in the King Valley for over 25 years and it seems the Italian grape variety is at home in this neck of the woods. The Pietra Rossa, or red stone, is named for the rocky, iron oxide rich soils in which the fruit for this wine is grown. It’s has a purple red colour and a lightly herby aroma with cherry fruitiness.
with Anita McPherson
with Christos Miliankos, Naturopath, NE Naturopathic Group There is also a savoury, but also quite juicy fruit flavour, with lashings of red cherry and berry fruit underpinned by and a kind of tobacco-like earthiness. This wine goes beautifully with beefy tomato ragu, but I also like it with barbecued Scotch Fillet. I’m so glad Angus cattle like to live here too. Around $28.
This Day in History, 1882 GLENROWAN had not been a lucky town for Ann Jones. Her hotel had been burnt to the ground at the Siege of Glenrowan, her son had died as the result of wounds received in the shoot-out and she had been charged with harbouring an outlaw. Even before the siege, life had been hard - one of her children had been killed by a falling tree in the late 1870s. Then after the siege, in 1992, her daughter Jane died.
Do you suffer from allergies? ALLERGIES occur when your immune system reacts to a foreign substance such as pollens, bee stings, pet hair fibres, or foods. Allergies can come in many shapes and sizes. While some people can enjoy beautiful weather, others avoid going outdoors at all costs. The same situation may occur for people watching others enjoy an endless variety of foods while they must be very selective. Those people who suffer from the incessant symptoms of food or environmental allergies may wonder, why? Have you ever wondered what causes your stuffy nose and sneezing? It’s not just a string of bad luck; whether your allergy symptoms occur in direct result to the local pollen count,
different types of food or your neighbour’s cat, there are certain responses from your immune system that lead to your level of reaction. The body’s immune system generates different antibodies to protect us from illnesses. For allergies, the immune system generates Immunoglobulin E, also known as IgE, to aid in combating your allergy symptoms. IgE is a chemical messenger that travels to cells to relay information that a chemical defence against a foreign invader is needed. Allergic individuals have high IgE levels against benign environmental exposures such as pollen or hair fibres. Foods can also cause high levels of IgE.
Allergies can develop at any point in a person’s life. One factor that increases your chance is your family history. If one parent is allergic there is a 30 to 50 per cent chance of their offspring developing allergies. This jumps to 60 to 80 per cent if both parents are allergic. In many cases, allergies first present early in life, during infancy or the toddler years. Most of these allergies will be lifelong concerns, although some can resolve on their own. For help with working out what allergies you have and assistance with the symptoms you may suffer, contact Christos Miliankos at the NE Naturopathic Group (also part of the Wang Wellness Centre) on 5798 3344.

GONE FISHING
FEATURE STORY
◆ BREAM FISHING: Zeppelin Allen with one of his many Black Bream caught at Nowa Nowa using prawns as bait last week.
Fishing and weather cools, but fish are being caught THINGS are really starting to cool down now, both with the weather and with the fishing. Over the last week I have not has an many fishing reports coming in as I usually do, however there has still been a few. Quite a few Murray cod seem to be getting caught at Lake Mulwala, with several being over 100cm long. Most years Lake Mulwala fishes better than the Ovens River during autumn and this year is no exception. With that said there has still been quite a few Murray cod and trout cod caught in the Ovens River over the last week. Bait fishing with cheese seems to be producing the most consistent results. There have been quite a few trout caught in the streams and I have had several reports from around the region of good trout fishing. Trout have been caught on worms in the Ovens River upstream of Bright, and fly fishermen have done well in the Upper King River near Pineapple Flat using bead headed nymphs. Both Lake William Hovell and

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA Lake Buffalo have been producing a few redfin on bait and lures, but not huge numbers. Lake Hume remains the standout redfin fishery this week as it has been for several months now with reports of huge catches of redfin still coming in. These have, however certainly slowed down considerably with the cooler weather but some anglers are still locating the big schools of redfin and hitting the jackpot. Something different for me this week, I headed over to Nowa Nowa on Lake Tyers and fished with a delightful young man named Zeppelin where we managed to catch around a dozen bream using prawns as bait and fishing off the bank right in Nowa Nowa itself.

“Any bird, animal or reptile - I’ve even had goannas, although I draw the line at snakes - I can’t handle them.” Unfortunately Maisie’s boundary fences had begun to fall into disrepair and the cattle were getting out, so she was delighted when Trust for Nature found a solution for her. Through the North East Catchment Management Authority (CMA), Trust for Nature has had access to Working for Victoria crews funded by the state government to support landholders with covenants throughout the catchment. Working for Victoria (WFV) is a state government initiative responding to COVID-19, matching jobseekers, including those who lost their jobs in the pandemic, to employers who need them. The North East CMA has employed three teams working with organisations including Landcare, Trust for Nature and Parklands Albury Wodonga, as well as with private landholders. Isaak, Bryce, Shannon and Fraser - got to work on Maisie’s dilapidated fences. “They were wonderful young men,” she said. “They fixed the fences, hung some gates so they would open smoothly and slashed some grass off the electric fence for me which was really good and just what I needed.” Chris and Isaak, who have completed undergraduate degrees in environmental management and science, said the program helped them gain practical skills and certifications. Alex, who grew up on a local farm, said he enjoyed the opportunity to be out of the office. The crew has been helping out other landholders in the region, including Diana Simpson, whose covenant is adjacent to Warby-Ovens National Park. The crew removed old fencing, giving wildlife unrestricted access to the park. Trust for Nature’s North area man-

ager Amelia Houghton said thanks to Working for Victoria, Trust for Nature has been able to provide much-needed assistance to more than 20 landholders with conservation covenants in North East Victoria. “Trust for Nature has been really pleased by how the Working for Victoria program is being delivered, and the close collaboration between North East CMA and Trust for Nature has made the process of linking the crews to landholders seamless,” she said. “Trust for Nature has received very positive feedback from landholders who are impressed by the skill level, professionalism, and attention to detail that the community liaison officer and work crews are displaying. “This is a fantastic opportunity for Trust for Nature as it has allowed us to provide more support for landholders to protect their conservation covenants, particularly those recovering from bushfires.”
