By BELINDA HARRISON MIKE Feeney’s passion for writing sat dormant during his career in consumer marketing and corporate strategy, waiting for the chance to be let loose. It took until retirement and the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown for that time to come and now Mike has a fully-realised screenplay to show for his efforts. “I originally wanted to be a journalist, but instead joined Philip Morris (which also owned Lindemans Wines at the time) in a senior management position,” Mike said. “For a time I also worked at Elders IXL under (Australian businessman, Carlton AFL president and Liberal Party president) John Elliott and sat on a few ASX listed company boards.” Mike grew up in Essex in the UK and migrated to Australia in 1971 having met his Australian wife (Roslyn) in London and now lives in the Melbourne suburb of Malvern, but he has long had an interest and love for the North East of Victoria.

Milk fever post whelping MILK fever is a condition seen mostly in small breed dogs nursing large litters of puppies, although the condition can occur in any breed with any size litter. As we know, milk is high in calcium, and the demand for calcium is highest in a lactating mother. In addition, calcium is important in muscle contraction and there has been plenty used up during the labour and birth of the pups. As a result, the mother dog can develop low blood calcium which requires immediate treatment. Low blood calcium (milk fever) in bitches can cause muscle tremors and weakness and eventually develop into an inability to stand and sometimes seizures. The muscle tremors also generate excessive heat, which can cause the dog to become hyperthermic (heat stress). Immediate veterinary treatment is required if milk fever has developed, treatment involves the slow infusion of calcium via intravenous injection while
with Dr Ellie Merritt, Warby Street Veterinary Clinic monitoring the dog closely. To prevent milk fever, the following husbandry techniques should be undertaken in the lead up to whelping: - Diet: Feeding a commercial, high quality food during the pregnancy and then feeding a puppy food once the puppies are born is recommended. The volume of food can be increased in the last 3 weeks as the pups do most of their growth during this time inside their mother (3-4 times/day is recommended). Fresh meat is a poor source of calcium and should not be used as the main part of the mother’s diet. - Calcium supplementation: You can discuss using a calcium supplement with your veterinarian after the pups are born and this would be recommended in a dog that has previously had milk fever. Calcium supplements are readily available and easy to administer.

◆ Templetonia retusa (Cockies Tongues).
Cockies Tongues
TO brighten up the winter garden with a splash of brightest vermilion, Templetonia retusa [Cockies Tongues] is a great choice. The shape of the keel of the typical pea-flower structure [see inset] demonstrates the aptness of the Aussie bushmen’s common name of this winter-flowering delight. Templetonia are a small Australian genus of the pea family. The genus was named after after John Templeton, an 18th century Irish botanist, scientist and political activist. He was a founding father of the Belfast Botanic Gardens and Ulster Museum. He is often referred to as the ‘Father of Irish Botany’. He had a close association with Sir Joseph Banks, who unsuccessfully tried to recruit him as a bota-
nist on the HMS Investigator with Matthew Flinders’ Expedition to Australia in 1801. Templetonia retusa is the most commonly cultivated species of this genus. The epithet is from the Latin retusus - meaning dull or blunt, referring to the blunt, notched tips of the leaves. T. retusa grows in heath and woodland along the coast from WA to SA. It is also found on Kangaroo Island and the Flinders Ranges of SA. It is relatively common, and not at risk in the wild. The most easily recognised form bears bright red flowers. Less common colour forms of white or yellow/cream are occasionally seen. In full sun it forms a sturdy, upright shrub, up to 1.5 metres in height. Plants will become more open in a semi-shaded location. In the garden, T. retusa will respond well to pruning, and can be
shaped to a desired height and form. Spectacular pea-flowers completely covering the foliage are produced over a long period through winter and into spring. Nectar-feeding birds are attracted to the flowers and are efficient pollinators. This hardy plant does best in well-drained soils. Although it naturally occurs in dry Mediterranean climates, it is reliable in areas of higher rainfall. It makes an attractive pot plant, and as such will benefit from regular light applications of an all-round fertilizer. Plants produce copious seeds encased in typical pea-pods. In dry conditions, the seeds will remain viable for many years. New plants germinate readily from scarified seed. Plants can also be grown from tip cuttings of new season’s growth.

YOUR HEALTH Cabernet Merlot Gapsted Wines
IT looks like it’s going to be a great snow season and with a choice of different resorts to visit in North East Victoria the roads are busy with city folk preparing to hit the slopes. While I love the notion of getting a lift pass, going off-piste and carving up the powder around the moguls, in truth I have no idea what any of that means, as the closest I’ve been to a black run is the bar at the lodge. I did put snow boots on and I remember it was great to watch out the window and wait for friends to return, all adrenalinefuelled and red-cheeked with that distinctive skier’s sunburn. Snowfields are great to look at when you’re inside, in front of a fire and holding a glass of red like Gapsted Wines Cabernet Merlot. Made from King Valley fruit, it has a deep, red colour and lifted aroma of blackcurrant and dark berry fruits. It was matured for seven months in American oak which balances the fruity flavours and adds a little gentle cedar warmth and tobacco-like spice. A medium bodied wine it is easy to drink and quite foodfriendly, pairing well with cheesy dishes, meats, pasta and pizza.
with Anita McPherson
with Georgia Vujic, Youth Counsellor, Headspace Albury Wodonga ◆ PILING ON: Compoundign stress makes each problem significantly more difficult to deal with.
Stress plus stress
It would also be good with fondue - another thing which sounds really exotic and luxurious but which I haven’t seriously tried. Gapsted Wines can be found in the heart of the High Country - a great place to enjoy spectacular views of snow-capped mountains without having to climb one. About $19.
This Day in History, 1916 EAGER anticipation could sum up the mood of the crowd in Her Majesty’s Theatre on the evening of this day in 1916, lured to the theatre by the promise of colour movies. The process was called Kinemacolour. It concentrated its cameras on pomp and pageantry in exotic locations - the Princes of India and their extravagant displays of wealth and power, the great cities of the world, and the outposts of Empire. Admission prices were one shilling, two shillings, and reserved seats at two shillings and sixpence.
YOUR maths teacher probably taught you that 1 + 1 = 2. Your local pre-schooler might have taught you that 1 + 1 = a window. Today’s lesson is compound stress. One stressor plus one stressor equals a lot more than two stressors. If 2020 had given us bushfires and a different year had have given us a pandemic, we might have been able to process all of the practical, financial and emotional sides of the bushfires and the recovery well enough, or as well as could be expected. The first few months after a disaster are usually practical - getting water again, finding stock, bringing loved ones back home, rebuilding the houses, replacing lost items, rebuilding sheds, new equipment and whatever else is practically possible. After a few months, we typically see the emotional processing begin to happen - we lose our sense of ‘in the crisis’ and start having flashbacks, nightmares, trouble sleeping, trouble coping. This might also look like distraction,
forgetfulness, arguments with loved ones, or the use of coping mechanisms which aren’t ideal. What happened when the pandemic hit was that all of that recovery, all of the emotional processing, the ‘back to normal’, the beginning to feel fully safe and secure in our environments again was diminished. We couldn’t have the hugs, the visitors, the chats over a cuppa, the workmates debriefing over smoko, conversations over the back fence or in the supermarket aisle. This means that we’re stuck in the middle of a pandemic, while we’re stuck in the middle of processing the fires. With so much uncertainty in the world for so many months now we can feel like we’ve been stuck in this holding pattern for far too long. It can impact us all in different ways - anxiety, depression, feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, and an impending sense of doom. If you’re feeling this way, or you know someone who might be, it’s important to get help.
There is no shame in seeking help. Having someone help you doesn’t mean you’ve failed or that you’re somehow lesser. It means you don’t have to face these battles alone. Reach out to someone because humans need each other, now more than ever. Help is there for you. Talk to your doctor, your mum, your mates, your neighbour, a counsellor or anyone you trust. Next time compound stress overwhelms you, remember this is a normal reaction to an abnormal set of circumstances and that help is available for everyone. 1+1 might equal 2 in maths, but in 2021, it’s a whole lot more than that. Look after yourselves, and each other- we’ll get through this, together. Further information can be found at www.headspace.org.au or www.headtohealth.gov.au or www.au.reachout.com or www.beyondblue.org.au and by following headspace Albury Wodonga on Facebook.

TECH & SCIENCE
The secret life of a procrastinator DOES this sound familiar? You’ve just been handed a task to do. Let’s just say, for argument’s sake, it’s an article for a newspaper. The deadline for the job is one week away - which is ample time to get it done. ‘Heck,’ says Mr Brainy, the sensible part of your brain. ‘If I start now, I could have this done by tomorrow. ‘My boss will love me, and I’ll have the rest of the time to relax and enjoy myself.’ ‘Yeah....’ replies Goofy, the irresponsible part of your brain, somewhat unconvinced. ‘That sounds great and all, but just give me another five minutes. I just remembered that there was a video on Youtube of a whistling monkey wearing a funny hat. ‘After that, we’ll get straight on the job, I promise.’ Five hours later as Goofy is reading an article entitled ‘Five facts about Justin Bieber that will totally blow your mind’ Mr Brainy politely interrupts. ‘Look,’ says Brainy. ‘I’m sure these facts about Justin Bieber will have enormous impact on the value of your life, but maybe we should get onto that job we were going to do?’ ‘You’re right’, replies Goofy. ‘Look. I just wrote the headline of our article, I’m on a roll! ‘Oh wow, someone just shared a link on Facebook for the trailer of that movie we want to see, let’s check it out!’ Six days later Goofy is staring blankly into fridge late at night. At this point, Mr Panic - the mostly dormant part of your brain - suddenly wakes up in hysterics. ‘OH MY GOD! You still haven’t written that article? What have you been doing for the past week? Are you insane?’ ‘I’ve been trying to tell Goofy…’ Brainy meekly pipes in. ‘You’re both useless!’, shouts Panic. ‘I’ll do it myself!’ When we are faced with an onerous task we need to complete, often what occurs is a battle between our limbic system (the unconscious part of our brain that contains the pleasure centre) and the prefrontal cortex (the planning part of our brain).
with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au The limbic system is one of the oldest, most dominant parts of our brain and it’s on automatically. It tells you useful things like, ‘Run that’s a scary lion!’ or ‘Don’t touch that, it’s hot.’ It also tells you less useful things like, ‘That’s a super boring job you should avoid.’ Meanwhile the prefrontal cortex is younger and not automatic at all. You have to actively engage it, and the minute you stray from your task, the limbic system takes over again. Hence, we procrastinate. The good news is, we can try to trick our brains into overriding or manipulating the limbic system by trying the following things. Have a 2pm reset: There’s nothing worse than watching the morning go by unproductively. So why not have a second morning? At 2pm, there’s still plenty of time to get things done. Make your coffee, have a yawn and a stretch, and get cracking. Create an audience: Embarrassment is a powerful motivator. If you’re only holding yourself accountable for your task, it’s very easy to put things off. Try setting a deadline and tell someone that at that allotted time you’re going to present your work to them. Make the job fun and rewarding: Make the limbic system work for you, instead of against. Set some mini goal posts for your job, and give yourself a reward at each stage. A small snack, or a five minute break to do something fun and enjoyable can gradually train the limbic system into thinking the job is actually fun.

“Roslyn and I have visited the North East for many years, often with our bikes in tow, and the region reminds us of Umbria in Italy where we are lucky enough to own an apartment. “We find many similarities between the two areas, which piqued our interest when we first visited and kept us coming back.” During the lockdown in 2020, Mike decided it was finally time to turn his hand to writing and he chose to write a script about a disastrous but amusing trip to Australia his sister made in the 1990s. “I sent it to a professional scriptwriter for comment and she advised me to take the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) course and learn how to do it properly.” Mike signed up and, in addition to learning the tricks of the trade, found out he would need to write an entirely new script, rather than being able to use the one he already had. Mike’s working title is ‘When Friends Fall Out’ and he says that despite its Mafia references, land disputes and dramatic overtures, that it’s really a comedy-drama. “I tried to inject as much humour into the story as I could, despite the subjects. “It’s not in my nature to take myself or life in general too seriously and I was well known in my business career for breaking the ice in any tense business meeting with a quip.” When Friends Fall Out’s logline is about a relative newcomer to the bucolic Victorian valley, Vietnam sniper veteran Ross, who craves to emulate the business success of his new friend Frank but must overcome his own demons and tackle the local Mafia (who are trying to acquire the land to illegally grow tobacco), which comes between them. “The inspiration was that the hus-

bands of two close Italian couples that Roslyn and I are friends with in Umbria fell out over a land sale. “The two main protagonists in the script - Frank and Ross - and their respective wives are loosely based on them and their professions in Umbria. “I simply transplanted it all to North East Victoria among the Italian diaspora there. “One of the motel owners and his wife in the story are also based on North East locals and the characters of John and Lori are based on me and my wife. “I have kept the real names of some towns and businesses like the brewery in Beechworth, the Dumu Balcony Café in Bright and the university in Albury, but I use a fictional setting of ‘Currawong’ for Beechworth itself. “I tried to make the script as a bit of a promotion for the region and that’s why I’ve kept some of the real names. “Some of the Mafia figures in the story are also based on real people - although most of them are now either dead or in jail.” With Mike unable to simply jump in the car and visit the areas he was writing about last year, he used not only his memories of the towns and people, but current and older newspaper editions online to research. “The time period is roughly
2010 to 2015 so I used the papers to find out what issues were of concern to locals so they could be weaved into the story as well as using them to find out the status of the First Nations land claims.” While Mike wrote the script with a movie in mind, he said he could also see it working as a mini-series which could continue beyond the current story. “The valleys would provide a great backdrop to such a series. “Getting it made, however, is another story and a much bigger challenge,” he added. “Finding a producer to read a script by a new writer isn’t easy and neither is finding financial backers so I just have to keep trying until someone says ‘yes, I like it’.” Mike is currently sketching out a new movie or TV series idea based on his experiences in the business world and he would like to have his previous children’s book re-published in Australia. “It’s called Danny the D Bus and it’s about a bus that travels around the town we stay in in Umbria. “When it was published in Italy, it was printed with photos, but I’d really like it to be re-done with proper illustrations.” For anyone wanting to discuss his script further, contact Mike at jmfeeney@bigpond.com or 0404 885 557.
