Street machine dreams
By BELINDA HARRISON
LIKE so many excellent (and yes, sometimes ill-conceived) decisions, the idea to work together to re-build a ‘65 XP Ford Falcon ute was forged around the fire on a Friday night over a few cans. In a pre-COVID world five and half years ago Ian (Pa) Dowell, wife Louise, son Troy, daughter in law Kylie and grandchildren Josh, Chloe and Tamzyn (Bub) were enjoying each other’s company. They were sharing food, drinks and laughs and the idea was pitched to ‘finally do something’ with the car that had been sitting in Pa’s shed for the last seven years. Mechanics by trade, Troy and Josh were always tinkering away in the shed on one project or another with Ian helping out and Troy’s ‘bible’ - a copy of Street Machine magazine - never far from reach. “Over the years, I’ve got a lot of ideas from that mag,” Troy said. “The three of us built Josh’s race car and he was featured with it in Street Machine, which was pretty cool.” “I’ve always loved cars, especially Fords,” Josh (20) said. “I started racing with the North East Car Club when I was 12 and my dream car was an AU Falcon, which I purchased when I was 15.

Why you should give a f* about farming with Mark from Edgars Books and News Wangaratta GABRIELLE Chan has worked at The Daily Telegraph, The Australian and ABC Radio before marrying a sheep and wheat farmer in 1996. Her new book is a brilliant companion piece to Rusted Off which was published in 2018. The answer to the book’s title is simple: ‘because you eat’ or ‘because you wear clothing’. Most of us have little idea of the connection between farming and our everyday lives. To the city child who thinks milk comes in a carton to the urbanised country dweller who worries about a half strength soy latte or whether plant based meat is meat (hint-NO) this book will give an excellent background to challenges facing farmers today and in the future. Australia has a water policy subject to state control rather than national control and decisions on soil, water, natural disasters and agriculture are made in a current political climate rather than a long term benefit context for all Australians.
PET CORNER WANGARATTA RSPCA has many lovable creatures waiting for the perfect family to take them home. If you want to add a furry friend to your home, contact the RSPCA on (03) 5722 2874. Gabrielle’s book covers everything from history, risk, farming culture, families, water, natural balance and more in a readable but well researched style that will make you contemplate where we are going as a country that sees itself as a food bowl for the world. Gabrielle summarises the now, however also lays out a path forward for our farmers, our nation and importantly our politicians or leaders. A compelling read that will change your view on farming and eating.
AUSTRALIAN PLANTS SOCIETY (VIC)
◆ STRIKING: A beautiful, lesser-known member of the Rutaceae family is the Philotheca spicata (pictured). PHOTO: Helen Van Riet
Philotheca spicata MEMBERS of the Rutaceae plant family are well known in cultivation. All bear five-petalled, starshaped flowers and the foliage, fruits and flowers are aromatic. Economically important and readily recognisable are citrus e.g. oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruit. Of note, and becoming more well-known, is the Australian finger lime (Citrus australasica). Economically important for the cut flower industry is Brown Boronia (Boronia megastigma) which bears citrusy perfumed brown and gold blossoms in spring. Other Australian Rutaceae include correa, crowea, eriostemon and philotheca. Until recently, members of the philotheca genus were grouped within the eriostemon genus. A well-known member is Bendi-
go Wax (formerly Eriostemon verrucosa) and now re-named Philotheca verrucosa. A strikingly beautiful, lesserknown member of this family is Philotheca spicata. This occurs naturally in the south-west of WA in a broad sweep from Eneabba to Albany. It is not endangered in the wild. Philotheca is from the Greek words psilos, meaning naked or bald, and thece, meaning covering or box. Spicata is from the Latin word spica, meaning point or flower-spike. The common name for P. spicata is Pepper and Salt, but the origin of this name is unclear. The dark green foliage is lightly citrusy aromatic when crushed. Dainty pinkish-mauve flowers are borne in generous racemes from July to October.
Stems of cut flowers are longlasting. This is also a useful way to prune the shrub to shape if required. This lovely plant is smaller growing than the more commonly grown philothecas. It is suitable as a garden specimen, or in a rockery, hanging basket or pot. Plants thrive in full sun or part shade in well-drained sandy or loamy soil and are relatively slowgrowing, reaching about 70cm x 70cm in four to five years. Cuttings strike well from firm young growth which should be taken in the warmer months. Plants are available from specialist Australian plants nurseries and it is well worth the effort to source a plant for your springflowering garden.

YOUR HEALTH Fowles Farm to Table 2019 Sangiovese
A POPULAR foodie website recently crunched the numbers on the most searched recipes and it seems old favourites came out on top, albeit with a nod to multiculturalism. We’ve long been fans of spaghetti Bolognese and roast lamb and these are still up there on top, but now we’re thinking about making our ‘bol’ with Wagyu beef or adding Greek flourishes like oregano and lemon to a slow cooked shoulder. Good roast spuds and curries are also loved too, with many appearing to want the kind of food they remember when they were growing up, pimped up with the flavours they fancy today. Fowles Farm to Table Sangiovese is a regular at our place because it’s familiar, its goes down a treat and matches to so many of the foods we eat. The grapes for this wine were selectively harvested from 10 years old vines after what had been a warm and dry year and after fermentation, the wine spent nine months maturing in French oak. It has a deep red colour and earthy berry aroma with a definite hint of that oak.
with Anita McPherson
The flavour is quite punchy and vibrant with cherry fruit but it’s also kind of roasted and savoury, with quality not unlike dried herbs. That’s what makes it so good on the table with meats like roast lamb - whichever cut or method you choose - the wine’s flavour standing proud and complementing the rich meat. It’s also good with my spag bol - made with pork and regular beef - the way it ought to be. PRICE: About $17 a bottle.
This Day in History, 1891 TWO American Indians, Eagle Elk and American Bear, had been brought to Australia by Wirth’s Circus, and on this day the circus pitched its tent and performed for Benalla audiences. After the evening performance, Benalla bedded down for the night. Mr Edward Griffiths, a farmer who lived on the outskirts of town, heard a noise in his chicken shed in the early hours of the following morning. On investigating, he found an intruder stalking his chooks. The would-be thief sprinted down the road with Mr Griffiths, who was no slow coach, in pursuit. His surprise on capturing a barefoot Indian can be imagined. It was Eagle Elk. He was locked up for being on premises without lawful excuse.
with Diana Bienvenu, Wangaratta Audiology ◆ OPTIONS AVAILABLE: Using noise-cancelling headphones when listening to music in noisy areas reduces the need to increase the volume.
Keep your good hearing THE message about the need for hearing protection has been ‘out there’ for several decades. Basically if you participate in an excessively noisy activity, it is really important to protect your hearing. The consequences of not using hearing protection can be problems with tinnitus (head noise) and hearing loss, which may affect your ability to understand the spoken message - especially in background noise. As we now know, just a single gunshot can cause permanent problems and listening to music at very loud levels can also cause a problem. Unfortunately, just because the sound is pleasurable, does not mean that it is safe. There are many ways to help your ears - for example, try noise-cancelling
headphones when listening to music in noisy areas to reduce the need to increase the volume. If you do need to turn up your device in a particular situation, say while on public transport, remember to turn the volume back down again as soon as you move into a quieter place. It is also important that children learn to listen to their music at a comfortable and safe level - when they have on headphones or earphones, they should still be able to hear you call them. Their music should not be loud enough to stop them hearing you. There are several different types of hearing protection systems available, including both earmuffs and earplugs. Earmuffs come in a variety of strengths for different noise levels or activities as well as head sizes.
There are even smaller-sized muffs for children. Traditionally, earmuffs have provided ‘passive’ protection, but now there are ‘active’ earmuffs available. The fantastic thing about these is that the softer, conversational, sounds around you are amplified, while a loud sound is muffled. This can be of advantage when engaged in an occasionally noisy activity when you also need to be able to hear someone. Options of earplugs available overthe-counter (OTC) have recently expanded, now including plugs for a variety of specific noise sources - for example, for partners of snorers. Musician’s earplugs are also available, either custom or off-the-shelf models.

“It was a wreck, but the apprentice panel beaters at TAFE repaired the body and Dad, Chloe and I got started on it as our new project. “I have learnt heaps from watching YouTube clips and there have been a lot of trials and changes I’ve made to the car over time because of what I’ve learnt, which have always given me a successful outcome.” Chloe (19) is currently studying to become an Allied Health assistant but loves being out in the shed getting her hands dirty. “I love spending time helping Dad, playing ‘mechanics’ and learning how to look after my car so I don’t have to rely on others - and it gets me out of doing chores in the house,” she laughed.
Bub (16) prefers cows to cars and spends time looking after Cocoa, Oreo, Milkshake, Stormy and Yoghurt in the paddocks. Her newest ‘baby’ is Esmeralda and with help from Kylie, is hand rearing the orphaned calf. “Esmeralda seriously thinks she’s a dog,” Bub said. “She loves playing chasey and giving cuddles and kisses. “She’s very cheeky but so adorable. “We even took her for a walk on a lead along the side of the road (we live out of town) with our dog the other day, she loved it.” With Ian living only 10 minutes away, the weekend ritual was for he, Troy and the kids to get together and work on the ute and they were hoping to have it finished in around two

◆ NOT QUITE READY YET: The ‘65 XP Ford Falcon ute is coming along since this photo was taken.
“The boys have designed, made and built a lot of things together including a bird aviary the size of a carport, a set of monkey bars, a two storey cubby house, a huge shed and even the house we live in. “The time they spend to-
gether building cars and whatever is great bonding time. “There’s always heaps of laughter, tears, learning, teaching and of course a few cans to keep them hydrated so I hope they can get back to doing that again soon.”

GONE FISHING
TALKING BUSINESS
◆ YELLA GOLD: The yellowbelly are staring to bite. Lake Nillahcootie is good for getting a decent number of small fish while Lake Hume and Lake Eildon are the places to go to catch the monster yellowbelly.
Spring delight as trout, yellowbelly on the bite SPRING is well and truly here and the spring time fishing action has hit hard and fast. Right around the region I have had reports of fish being caught. The trout streams are all fishing very well with both bait and lures. Worms are working exceptionally well for bait fishermen in all waterways at the moment. Lure fishermen are also picking up some lovely trout in streams that have a decent clarity. With the intermittent spring rainfall the water clarity and height has been inconsistent across all streams, but that is to be expected in spring time. I have been doing well with the new Strike Tiger leech soft plastics, as well as with worms and a Berkley twitch minnow in a number of streams. The yellowbelly are biting well in some areas. I have seen photos of quite a few nice yellowbelly being caught in Lake Hume, some of which have been quite large. I have had some good success fishing off the bank at Lake Nillahcootie using worms for bait. In two trips over there I have caught 11 yellowbelly, but nothing

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA huge. Two of my yellowbelly were over the legal size which is only 30cm and the rest were either undersize, or that close to being under/over that it is best to just put them back. I have also seen photos of redfin being caught at Lake Hume this week, with some anglers catching cricket score catches of fish. Whilst a little further afield, the Waranga basin, which is currently at 95 per cent capacity, has started producing a few redfin. I went to Lake Moodemere one afternoon this week to try and catch a carp and to my surprise I found it to be so full that the water has flooded out of the lake and over the road - I could not even drive in. I still fished near the rowing club, but did not get a bite.
Can your profession save you on your home loan? WHEN it comes to saving on your mortgage, some of you may not have to look further than your job. If yours is a profession that classifies you as a ‘low risk’ borrower in the eyes of lenders, then you may be entitled to special discounts. The lucky ones Accountants, lawyers and teachers are commonly eligible for home loan discounts, or particular loan types without fees, based on their profession. “The benefits differ depending on specific professions,” an MFAA finance broker explained, “It depends on what industry the lenders decide to target as it’s a constantly changing situation, so what’s here today may not be around tomorrow.” An example of this is the slowing down of the mining industry in 2015, which saw mining engineers lose their ‘in demand’ status and their professionbased discounts. Doctors take the cake
Lenders have their own target lists of professions, but doctors are the big winners. “They’ll get waived Lenders Mortgage Insurance (LMI), lower interest rates and, in many cases, banks will even go outside of their normal policy to get their loans approved,” the broker added. “However, not all medical professionals, such as psychiatrists, chiropractors, vets and pharmacists, are accepted by all lenders so it’s always advisable to confirm.” How the perks work Simply being in a certain profession won’t automatically save you on your home loan. To qualify, you must apply with a lender that offers your profession a special discount and meet that lender’s criteria. “You’ll often need to provide evidence of membership of a certain industry body such as the Australian Medical Association,” the broker said.
“Waived LMI is usually approved without any problems if you meet the criteria, however your mortgage broker may need to negotiate to get a better interest rate as well.” Because lenders don’t publish these better interest rates, to benefit from the discounts it’s best to have your broker by your side. Not only will they know which lenders to apply to, they will also assist you with pricing requests and negotiating the best possible interest rate. MFAA accredited finance brokers are industry leaders who have the knowledge and expertise to find the most appropriate loans for even the most complex financial scenarios, including profession-based discounts. Your local MFAA Accredited finance broker, Win Securities Limited is at 37 Reid Street Wangaratta. Call today on (03) 57215200 or email info@winsec.com.au.
