Excellent choice for post-graduate employment
By BELINDA HARRISON
FOR the sixth year in a row, Charles Sturt University (CSU) has been ranked first for full-time graduate employment among Australian universities. “Our courses are co-designed with industry and include extensive practical experience, which means our graduates are sought after and valued by employers,” Charles Sturt University Vice-Chancellor Professor Renée Leon said. The 2021 Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching Graduate Outcomes Survey (GOS) was completed by 127,827 Australian university graduates and focuses on their employment outcomes four months after leaving university. Results revealed that 84.7 per cent of Charles Sturt’s 2020 graduates were in full-time employment four months after graduation - the highest rate among Australian universities and substantially above the sector average of 68.9 per cent. “The 2021 Graduate Outcome Survey’s results are another example of how the university connects students with the knowledge and wisdom to shape the world,” Professor Leon said. “Our graduates are career-ready and able to apply their knowledge immediately to make a meaningful impact in the workforce. “Topping the national rankings for full-time employment six years in a row is an excellent result for Charles Sturt University, its staff, and its students prospective and current.” “The increase in Australia’s graduate employment compared to last year was welcome news for graduates as they hit the ground running and enter the workforce impacted by COVID-19 pandemic restrictions,” Minister for Education and Youth, the Honourable Mr Alan Tudge, said.

Cryptorchidism CRYPTORCHIDISM is the incomplete descent of one or both testes into the scrotum. The undescended teste can end up in a variety of locations from the inguinal area outside of the abdomen, right up to just behind the kidney, which is where it started out. For the majority of dogs and cats, the testes should be in the scrotum by two months of age. In some cases it can take longer, but they will rarely descend further after six months of age. Undescended testes are more common in purebred animals and it is thought to be an inherited problem. A unilateral cryptorchid is more common than a bilateral and the right testes is retained twice as often as the left in dogs. Rarely is the retained teste a cause of pain or discomfort, even if it sits in the inguinal canal. There is a chance the spermatic cord of the retained teste can become twisted. This will cause an acute onset of abdominal pain and the affected teste would need to be surgically removed. The main risk of not removing a retained test is the significant possibility
with Ovens and Kiewa Veterinary Hospital it will become neoplastic (cancer). Removing the retained teste is usually straight forward if it can be easily located in the inguinal canal outside of the abdomen. Most of the cases we see are like this. It can get a lot more complicated when the teste is inside the abdomen. Sometimes they are easily found, but at other times they are quite tricky to find, and a large incision may need to be made to be able to explore the abdomen from the kidney to the inguinal canal opening. They are often smaller as well, which can make them difficult to locate. As this condition is heritable, it is advised to remove affected males from breeding lines. If you think your pet has an undescended teste they need to be checked by a vet and ideally booked in for surgery to remove the retained testes before it can become cancerous. Ideally, this surgery is done before 12 months of age, but should definitely not be left later than four years of age.

Snow in summer
WE’VE had a wetter than usual spring. Plants of Melaleuca linariifolia are bursting out all over North East Victoria with luxuriously fluffy mantles of delicate snow-white blossoms completely covering dark green foliage. M. linariifolia is endemic to the eastern hinterlands of NSW and southern Queensland. It occurs naturally along watercourses and in areas of sporadic heavy rainfall which may be periodically flooded. In the language of the Gadigal people it is known as budjur. Other common names are Narrow-leaved Paperbark and Flax-leaved Paperbark. “Snow in summer” thrives in a sunny position. Some supplementary watering in dry years will ensure a magnificent early summer flowering display. There are several forms. The most common is a small tree. The dense canopy throws welcome shade on hot summer days, making
it a popular selection as a street tree and a feature for larger gardens. Mature plants may reach up to around 8m x 6m and can be pruned to shape. The longevity of M. linariifolia can be used to advantage. Old plants that have suffered neglect can be successfully renovated by hard-pruning back to older wood. Epicormic buds will be activated and within a few years dense fresh young growth will delight with an early summer snowstorm. Paperbarks should not be planted near underground wastewater pipes. By nature the roots seek out groundwater, leading to possible damage. Smaller growing cultivars are usually available and are useful for smaller spaces. “Snowstorm” is a small shrub to 1.5m and “Sea Foam” is a larger plant to 2.5m. “Mini-Me” is 0.3m x 1m and makes an attractive pot plant. “Purple Tops” or “Claret

Tops” are compact shrubs with small leaves and bright red new growth. When in flower all varieties are great butterfly and insect attractors. All cultivars are frost tolerant, fast growing and disease free. A similar species is Melaleuca trichostachya (Narrow-leaved Honeymyrtle). This tree grows to 10 metres high and is indigenous to North Queensland. Cultivation requirements are similar. Propagation is easy from both seed and cuttings. Propagation of named cultivars must be from cuttings to grow true to form. The common name ‘paperbark’ refers to the papery white bark which can be peeled off in sheets. Some peeling off of the bark does no harm. These sheets make an attractive lining for hanging baskets. With the school holidays imminent, budding artists may enjoy experimenting with writing or painting on these natural sheets of paper.

YOUR HEALTH Politini Wines Pinot Grigio 2021
THERE are good reasons they call Christmas the silly season and this year it feels crazier than ever as we try and pack months of postponed events and celebrations into a few short weeks. The freedom to congregate means we’re doing it with renewed energy and enthusiasm, making sure we catch up on office Christmas parties and meet up with old friends and loved ones. While some carols events were cancelled early on, others have been cobbled together at the last minute for a community desperate to come together, get into the spirit and sing by candlelight. I’ve got a bottle under each arm in case there is seafood, turkey or barbecue on the menu at the next lunch function I’m invited to, and one of them is Politini Wines Pinot Grigio. Politini Wines specialises in estate-grown Italian and traditional French varieties which are at home in the free-draining red granite soil of the upper King Valley.

This fresh and versatile white wine has a light, golden colour a bright and fruity aroma of white blossom, pear fruit and citrus. There is pear flavour too, the zest of lemon fruit and a crisp, dry finish which makes it ideal with turkey, roast chicken or a fillet of snapper. Its refreshing quality is just what you need when you’re struggling with the heat of the day or can’t stand the heat in the kitchen. Just make sure there is another in the cooler for Boxing Day. About $22.
This Day in History, 1943 A BLACK day for Wangaratta, as eight men and two youths died in a bushfire. The fire began in the late afternoon beside the Hume Highway at Bowser. It burned towards Tarrawingee, pushed along by a stiff westerly. It crossed the Beechworth railway, the Byawatha and Eldorado Roads and arrived at Reid’s Creek, where a hastily assembled fire crew almost had it under control. Across the other side of the creek it spread out of control, across Dunkley’s property, and on towards Tarrawingee. By this time, more volunteers had been assembled from the surrounding district, and fire units were on their way from Wangaratta. By the time the fire reached Reidsdale, whole paddocks were blazing, swirling infernos, with sheaves of hay and grain showering sparks from the sky. In the middle of the searing heat and blinding smoke, the Wangaratta Fire Unit and its crew were caught. Eight men and two youths died, twenty were hospitalised, and many others treated for severe burns.
with With Sophie Lorback, North East Natural Health Centre (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) ◆ ALTERNATIVES: It’s important to cater for guests who aren’t able or don’t want alcoholic drinks this Christmas season.
Christmas cheer without alcohol HOLIDAYS, warm weather, entertaining, festivities, everyone having fun with a drink in their hand at the Christmas get togethers. This is what December and the festive season is all about. From now until Christmas, or realistically New Years’ day there is going to be a whole lot of feasting, socialising and drinking going on and let’s face it, a party is just not a party without enjoying a good drink. It seems, however, that those looking for a non-alcoholic beverage are often at a loss. The champagne cocktails look much more elegant and grown up than a glass of lemonade and a cold beer much more tempting than a glass of water or soda water.
YOUR ONE STOP FIRE PROTECTION SHOP
If you do not offer some kind of exciting looking and tasting non-alcoholic version at your parties you end up creating a divide between those guests who are partaking in festive drinking and those who are not. Think about your guests who are designated drivers, pregnant women, children and those who don’t really like alcohol. You can easily create a relaxed more inclusive party atmosphere that allows everyone to celebrate with or without the alcohol. Punches and mocktails are a great way to show off your creativity. Adapt clever garnishes from a cocktail book or look up some ideas online. Experiment with different juices, fla-
voured mineral waters, and tropical fruits. Use these easy cocktail substitutes as a guide: • Beer: white grape juice, ginger ale; • Cognac: peach, pear, or apricot nectar or juice; • Sake: rice vinegar; • Tequila: agave nectar; and • Vodka: white grape juice mixed with lime. Garnishing is important to create an element of excitement and fun for the non-alcoholic drinks. Dress up your drinks with these accessories: • Sprigs of mint; • Fruit skewers/stirrers; • Wedges of lemon; and • Lime or grapefruit

Excellent choice for post-graduate employment FEATURE ■

“It’s encouraging to see that despite the ongoing impacts of the pandemic, students are getting on with their lives, graduating and moving quickly into full-time work,” Minister Tudge said. Wangaratta local Luke Raison recently completed a four year Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science, specialising in Medical Imaging at CSU Wagga Wagga. “When I was looking at universities in high school, the options were to travel to one of the capital cities or to CSU at Wagga for a relevant course,” he said. “I chose to apply to CSU as my first preference because ultimately I wanted to work in radiography at a regional level. “I knew that a career in radiography was what I wanted and I love the country lifestyle and the sense of community in regional areas, so I wanted to be able to give
back to these areas.” Luke received an early offer to study at CSU and hasn’t looked back. “CSU was easily the most equipped university for regional work, as it is based primarily in Wagga Wagga, therefore I was able to attend placements in regional areas and build my clinical skills in those environments. “I also had the opportunity for varied placement options from regional Queensland to metropolitan Sydney which allowed me excellent clinical experience as well as the opportunity to travel Australia. “Furthermore, the staff at CSU were excellent as they had long histories of clinical practice and vast knowledge that I could learn from. “I appreciated my time at CSU as it provided the necessary skills to work as a radiographer in regional settings.” Luke is now a qualified radiogra-
pher (medical imaging technologist) and is employed with Goulburn Valley Health in Shepparton. “My final year studying was completed by the placement at Goulburn Valley Health, which eventually led to my employment there,” he said. “Looking back, I think there was no better place to study.” Just prior to the 2021 GOS being released, Charles Sturt was ranked third among Australian universities for long-term undergraduate employment outcomes in QILT’s 2021 ‘Graduate Outcomes Survey Longitudinal’ with 93.8 per cent of graduates in full-time employment three years after graduating. In the same survey, Charles Sturt was ranked fifth among Australian universities for long-term postgraduate employment outcomes, with 95.2 per cent of graduates in fulltime employment three years after graduating.

GONE FISHING
nemedia.com.au
TECH & SCIENCE
◆ NICE CATCH: To those that know him, this is “Jaycod”. The avid young Wangaratta fisherman, along with his cousin Jobe and friend Isaac, have had an amazing start to the Murray cod season catching so many cod lately. Well done boys, stay safe out there and keep being happy.
Plenty of fishing options over the festive break HEY everyone, this is my final fishing report for the year. After a Christmas break this column will be back bigger and better than ever in January. Over the Christmas/New Year period there will be a lot of fish caught. Conditions are ideal right across the region for all species. If the weather finally turns really hot, the trout may slow right down. This usually happens late in November, or early December. This year it has been prolonged thanks to above average rainfall and below average temperatures. If this happens, concentrate on the low light periods of the day, especially the morning after the water has had all night to cool slightly. If you’re heading off trout fishing in the lakes, you may need to fish down deeper as the trout tend to be much deeper into the water column during summer in search of cooler water. A downrigger tends to be helpful to those targeting lake trout in summer. Murray cod anglers should rejoice in the best Christmas fishing conditions that we have experienced for many years.
with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ DIGITAL ASSET: An NFT is a digital asset existing on a blockchain with a unique signature. The blockchain allows anyone to verify the authenticity and ownership of an NFT.
Putting the fun into non-fungibility with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA I am unsure of the water level in the Murray River, nor do I know which camp sites have reopened since the floods. One thing that I do know, is that wherever you can access Murray cod water this summer you should expect good results. Lake Hume has continued to fish well for redfin and yellowbelly and should continue to do so over the Christmas break. Reports of the big trout being caught up there have all but dried up over recent weeks. I have no doubt they are still there, but they are likely down deep where the water is cooler. Stay safe over the Christmas/ New Year period everyone. Thank you all very much for reading my fishing column all year, and a huge thanks goes out to everyone who has unselfishly shared their fishing reports and supplied photos this year. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, and I will see you all in 2022.
YOU may have heard a term NFT bandied about recently, and if so, you wouldn’t be alone. It’s one of the more common topics of conversation in both the techno and trading spheres. NFT stands for non-fungible token. In other words, it’s a good or product that cannot be replaced by an identical item. For something to be fungible in the first place, it implies that there is equal value between two assets of the same kind. Without getting too deep into economic theory, it’s essentially an asset that’s mutually interchangeable with something of the same kind - like Australian currency, for example. Take the concept of a dollar coin. How many dollar coins has the Royal Australian mint printed throughout the years? Too many to keep track of. They are legion, and any one of them serves its purpose just as well as any other. You can take a dollar coin from 1992 and use it to buy something worth exactly $1, just as well as you can take a dollar coin from 2021 and use that coin to purchase something for exactly $1.
Therefore, these dollar coins are said to be fungible. Since it’s the unique identifier of a very specific digital good, an NFT is the exact opposite: it serves as the distinct barcode for a digital asset that can’t be replaced. It’s really a digital token, a form of cryptocurrency - a virtual type of currency where transactions are maintained and recorded by a decentralized system that uses cryptography, instead of being either issued or regulated by a central authority, such as a bank. Think of this token as just another form of cryptocurrency, like more well-known ones such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. Of course, its non-fungible nature makes it a cut above your ordinary cryptocurrency. Since the average NTF stores additional information - the unique identifier in the form of metadata -the token comes into its own as more than just currency. Video games and NFTs As a digital medium, video games have always presented assets to players in virtual form. Grind for 100 hours, defeat the Evil Lord of Ultimate Evil, and obtain the

legendary Sword of Truth, Justice, and General Goodness - congrats! The only drawback is that this legendary sword you quested tirelessly for is a line of code trapped within the game. If you get bored of playing, or if the game shuts down, your sword (and progress) is gone. But this is no longer so with NFTS and companies like Enjin, who are producing (and allowing other developers to produce) multiverse items - virtual items that exist in your own digital wallet and can be used in a number of different games. In one Youtube video, Simon Kertonegoro of Enjin explains the world’s first multiverse game item - a simple wooden sword - can be used in three of Enjin’s video games. In a sense, it’s the first steps toward the concepts seen in the science fiction movie Ready Player One - where unique digital assets were a very important part of people’s lives. And while you may be inclined to pass such a thing off as a bit childish, remember that innovations in video games have shaped the landscape of technology for decades now. A silly video game sword today, an asset as important as your car or house tomorrow.
