A GENRE-BREAKING travel program showcasing the North East is set to hit the small screen next week as Trail Towns gets prepared to ride the Victorian High Country. Hosts Paul van der Ploeg and Dieter Kahsnitz will take viewers on a scenic bike tour from Wangaratta to the mountains, stopping along the King Valley Prosecco Road and Myrtleford before their adventure culminates at Falls Creek. Van der Ploeg, a 2013 mountain bike world champion who hails from Mount Beauty, said the opportunity to showcase the North East was a “dream come true.” “I’m so fortunate to be able to call this place home,” he said. “I grew up exploring these areas as a child and now I’m a big kid I appreciate it even more. “It’s pretty easy to showcase the area because it’s so special and inviting.” Kahsnitz, who rose through the ranks as a mountain bike racer before transitioning into a career in television, said the chance to combine his two passions was too good to pass up.

Raw pet food risks IN recent years many pet owners have moved away from feeding conventional, veterinary recommended commercial diets in favour of feeding their pets more ‘natural’ and ‘homemade’ choices such as raw diets. What pet owners may not know is that these diets pose a significant health risk to not only their pet, but also themselves. Currently there are no valid scientific studies which prove the health benefits of feeding a raw or home cooked diet. Certainly there are studies which have shown the perceived health benefit of feeding a raw food/home cooked diet, such as improved coat condition and stool quality. However, this is a result of the high fat content of the diet, rather than the quality of the diet itself. There are numerous, high quality studies which show the risks associated with feeding raw food and home cooked diets. Most home cooked or commercial raw diets have been found to be nutritionally unbalanced, often deficient in potassium, magnesium, zinc and calcium while high in vitamin D and sometimes phosphorus. These imbalances can lead to severe long term diseases including

with Ellie Merritt, Warby Street Veterinary Hospital bone deformities, developmental disease, kidney and liver disease and thyroid disease. In addition to this, raw meat/home cooked diets can cause gastrointestinal inflammation, bacterial infection, tooth fractures and gastrointestinal injury (from bones). Recent studies have also shown that nearly all raw meat diets are contaminated with bacteria (including Salmonella, E. coli and Clostridium), which poses a significant health risk to those preparing the food as well as the pet. We recommend feeding your pet a high quality, complete commercial dog food. These high-quality dog foods are strictly monitored and supplemented to provide a balanced diet for your pet. Further information can be found in the following resources: Schlesinger, D., Joffe, D. ‘Raw food diets in companion animals: A critical review’ (2011) and Davies, R., Laws, J., Wales, A. Raw diets for dogs and cats: a review with particular reference to microbiological hazards (2019).

◆ WINTER WARMERS: Even in winter you can pick a beautiful range of flowers to brighten your (or someone else’s) day. PHOTO: Helen Van Riet

A colourful winter bouquet

GATHERING a bouquet of flowers is a delight. The photo above shows a small selection from our garden to brighten a winter’s day. Central is Banksia menziesii (Firewood Banksia). The flowers of this Western Australian banksia begin to form some months before opening. The species is a slow-growing and long-lived small tree. Plants require well-drained soil. Extra water in dry periods and slow-release native fertilizer will improve flower production, but plants will ‘hunker down’ if neglected and bloom again when conditions improve. It is widely grown for the cut flower trade. Hakea laurina ‘Stockdale Sensation’ is a registered cultivar. It is compact and quick-growing. It flowers from late autumn through winter. The pincushion flowers are well-displayed, emerging creamy white, and progressively maturing through soft pink to deep red. A family of white-browed bab-

blers have built a communal nest in this small tree. Eucalyptus caesia ssp. magna (Silver Princess) is a firm favourite. The weeping silvery-grey foliage offsets trusses of bright pink blossoms throughout winter. Nectar-feeding birds are frequent visitors. E. caesia does not tolerate water-logging. Eucalyptus lansdowneana (Crimson Mallee) is a diminutive lightly-foliaged mallee from Eyre Peninsula in SA. Clusters of crimson flowers appear intermittently throughout the cooler months. Eucalyptus crucis originates from Southern Cross in WA. Mature trees retain their silver juvenile foliage. Prominent white buds open to reveal densely clustered cream flowers in winter. The foliage is a popular ‘filler’ for floristry and is suitable for dried flower arrangements. The species is nationally listed as ‘threatened’ and ‘vulnerable’. Thryptomene saxicola ‘Paynes Hybrid’ is a small spreading shrub

bearing dainty pink flowers from late autumn. Regular pruning will maintain a compact shape. It is not fussy with soils and tolerates full sun or light shade. Xerochrysum bracteatum (paper daisy) thrives in full sun. It is best treated as an annual and propagated from seed or cuttings. Regular tip pruning will prolong flowering. In this bouquet the partially opened flower heads were wired to provide longer stems. Removing spent flower-heads will extend the growing season. There are compact and tall forms in shades of yellow, orange, pink, cream and white. Acacia beckleri (Barrier Range Wattle). There are several forms of this tough shrub, some with spectacularly large clusters of flowers with up to 30 individual globular golden balls. This wattle is fast-growing and requires little maintenance. It originates from the Barrier Range, near Broken Hill.

YOUR HEALTH

La Cantina King Valley 2018 Cabernet Sauvigon WHEN we go on holidays there can be a tendency to throw caution to the wind and eat and drink like there is no tomorrow. That’s all well and good but if we don’t return to normal habits at home the consequences would be dire. As good as eating out can be, the portions tend to be bigger and the use of salt, or what Masterchef judges like to call seasoning, tends to be a lot more heavy-handed. I’d like to say “everything in moderation” is the way to go, but frankly there are some fast foods which lack any redeeming features, adding useless calories better sourced elsewhere. For me a little red meat and a small glass of wine are better choices when looking for sensory pleasures that also have a bit of substance. La Cantina King Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a full bodied red produced and bottled by the Corsini family. It’s a late ripening variety, picked in early April before being fermented on skins and aged in French oak barrels. It has a deep, purple red colour and earthy aroma of chocolate plum fruit. It’s dry and savoury, with more

plum and maybe black currant fruit, cedar and what you might call dusty tannins. It goes well with a couple of grilled lamb cutlets - a totally indulgent treat - but also with lean roo or venison that has been licked by the flames. A bonus is that the wine has no preservatives added - and I’m feeling better already. About $20.

This Day in History, 1935 ON this day, a thousand people gathered on snow-covered Mt Buffalo to see the final stage of the Wheelbarrow Marathon. With Parkinson pushing and Evans hunched on the barrow, the finishing line at the Chalet came into view. The barrowmen covered the final few yards through ranks of skiers forming an avenue of honour. As the barrow crossed the line, Parky upended Evans into the snow. The bet had been won with forty-five minutes to spare.

STRESS can impact us in lots of different ways. When we’re stressed, it can be hard to do the things we need to do. You might find that if you’re having an increased level of stress, it is impacting you at school or work. You might be finding that you’re anxious or irritable, that things that wouldn’t have normally annoyed you at all are suddenly annoying you a lot. You might be feeling depressed, unable to see any positives in your life, your work or schooling. You might have feelings of apathy the “I just can’t be bothered doing any of it” attitude. You might be losing focus, feeling tired, or missing important details in your work or study. You might have forgotten an exam or a due date, or be experiencing muscle tension or headaches. People respond to stress in different ways, so let’s look at some of the things that might be helpful. Seeking support from others is an excellent start. Make time to have a coffee or lunch with workmates, away from your work space. Talk, listen, share, and connect. Start a study group with other stu-

dents and take time to teach and learn from each other. Talk to your teacher or boss about your workload. Have conversations about how you’re going with it all, what you have done, what’s left to do and what you think you can manage in the time you’ve got. Be realistic with yourself, and those around you. No one gets everything exactly right all the time, we’re all human. Just try your best. Take time to do other things, including getting enough sleep. Our brains don’t function well when we’re tired, so sleep and other things that help us sleep well (healthy food choices, regular exercise) can help us when we’re stressed at work and school. When you’re at work or at school (or when you’re working or schooling from home), try to set a schedule and keep to it as much as possible. Schedule yourself breaks and be sure to take them, outside in the fresh air if you can. Even a short walk will help lower your stress level. In the same vein, when you’re not at work, turn off your work email and work phone and pay

attention to non-work you. Students might find this harder due to studying at home, but they can create a study space and try to leave that space just for studying. Prioritising can also help lower your stress level. Ask yourself what really matters? Which test counts the most towards my score? Which task needs to be done first? What is due next? Which exam am I most passionate about? Should I tick off some smaller, more manageable jobs first? Who or what can help me achieve this quickly? At the end of the day remember you are human, and school or work (or both!) are just a part of what makes you, you. So the next time stress impacts you and your wellbeing, reach out, take a break, re-assess and prioritise. Look after yourselves, and each other - we’ll get through this, together. with Roberta Horne AGBIZ ASSIST ◆ HELPFUL: AgBiz Assist has been helping communities develop solutions, manage change and prosper for three decades. PHOTO: AgBiz Assist

Assisting farmers, business and rural

AGBIZ Assist has become well known over the last three decades for the work we do and the support we provide to businesses, farmers and communities during times of need and financial upheaval, particularly when natural disasters strike. There are, however, many more ways we pursue our core aim of building resilient, thriving communities across northern Victoria and Southern NSW by helping them develop solutions, manage change and prosper. Bushfire Recovery Victoria has provided funding to AgBiz Assist via their charity AgBiz Care, to assist with the re-establishment of pastures for fire affected farmers and landholders in Towong Shire which was severely impacted by last year’s fires. This is an example of how we can assist and support economic development initiatives for community groups throughout each stage

of recovery and rebuilding. The Re-Seeding Upper Murray Project is being delivered by AgBiz Assist with support from Agriculture Victoria, Towong Shire Council, the Upper Murray Landcare Network and Bushfire Recovery Victoria. Funds ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 per affected property, will be allocated to eligible landholders by way of vouchers that can be redeemed from three locally based Rural Supply traders. Those farmers who have already sown crops are able to apply for a rebate on seed previously purchased. Under this collaborative partnership, a range of free information and training sessions, webinars and field days will continue to be rolled out by Agriculture Victoria and Upper Murray Landcare personnel to anyone who has an interest in productive pastures. Technical advice on how to achieve the best possible outcomes will provide

ongoing benefits to the farmers over the next seven to 10 years as they will know how to select and prepare their paddocks and seed blends for successful pasture management. Workshop topics ranging from advice about carbon markets and regenerative agriculture methods will hopefully play dual roles in supporting the recovery of these farming communities while offsetting the looming impact of climate change. Showing farmers how to get the best value from the thousands of dollars they invest in seed, machinery, fertiliser, labour and diesel costs each season will help them to develop strategies that contribute to improved performance and resilience. You are encouraged to call us on 1300 834 775 if you or your rural community requires free, independent and confidential help for your farm or related small business issues.
