Taking time to breathe By ANITA McPHERSON
A MYRRHEE resident who founded an innovative health and wellbeing organisation, is determined to help young people learn to self-regulate their emotions and build their resilience. Beata Heymann is the founder of Breath Circle an organisation which works directly with schools to empower students and teachers through the practise of mindful breathing. Students are taught to connect to and experience the power and depth of their breath, and to understand how breathing affects emotions, energy levels and focus. But the path to this method of enlightenment was discovered by Beata some time ago. A trained social worker, Beata spent 10 years working in a drop-in centre in a busy multicultural community in Melbourne catering to local families who’d migrated from places including South Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Vietnam. She developed close relationships with the families and children aged six to 16 who’d experienced trauma or difficulties in their lives, either directly through their own experiences of hardship like civil war, or indirectly through their parents. She started practising and teaching yoga in different communities, including at a youth centre in Fitzroy and in women’s shelters and refuges, where trauma-informed programs were being offered.

◆ FINDING PEACE: It was through exploration and experimentation to heal herself, that led to Beata Heymann founding the Breath Circle program.

Whelping information WHAT to expect when your dog is expecting. Preparing for your dog’s impending puppies can be an exciting time. It is helpful to be aware of potential problems and what to expect at each stage. When breeding your dog, take note of the breeding date so that you know when she is likely to whelp (give birth). The gestation (pregnancy) period of dogs is on average 63 days, but can range from 58 to 68 days. After 35 days of pregnancy the mother’s energy requirements will start to increase. Towards the end of pregnancy she will need about twice as much food as usual, and after the puppies are born she will need about three times as much. The best diet for her is puppy food. This is already balanced and doesn’t require any supplementation. Don’t be tempted to supplement calcium as this can cause metabolic imbalances, and excess vitamins can be harmful to the puppies. At around 45 days, your dog can be examined by a vet and x-rays taken to determine how many puppies to expect. Ultrasound can confirm pregnancy earlier than this but it is more difficult to count puppies this way. An area should be set aside for whelping and raising the puppies. The barriers around it should be low enough so that the mother dog can come and go as she likes, but high enough to keep the puppies safely confined.
with Ellie Merritt, Warby Street Veterinary Clinic During the first stage of labour, uterine contractions begin and your dog will appear restless and may pace, dig, tremble or pant. This lasts 6 to 12 hours and ends when the cervix has fully dilated. During the second stage of labour the puppies are born. Each puppy is born covered in a membrane. The mother will generally bite or lick the membrane away. If she doesn’t do this within a minute, you will need to intervene so that the puppy doesn’t suffocate. Use a clean towel to rub away the membrane, especially from the puppy’s nose and mouth. The umbilical cord may be cut with clean scissors and tied in a knot about 2cm from the pup. It is normal for the mother to eat the placenta, although she may vomit it up later. There is usually one pup born every 45 to 60 minutes, after 10-30 minutes of hard straining. Sometimes there may be a break of up to two hours between puppies. Seek veterinary attention if the mother is straining for over an hour without producing a pup, or takes a break for longer than two hours and you know there are more inside, or is in severe pain, or gestation goes for longer than 70 days.

◆ PROLIFIC: There are more than 200 species of Eremophila, including this one called Eremophila Summertime Blue. PHOTOS: Helen Van Riet
◆ SPOT THE DIFFERENCE: There are a number of subtle differences between the Eremophila, this one being the Eremophila Big Poly.
Desert-lovers for summertime AS summer advances, many Eremophilas in our garden come into their own. There are over 200 species, and an interesting variety of spectacular hybrids. The genus Eremophila is endemic to mainland Australia. Almost 90 per cent occur naturally in our inland arid regions. The name Eremophila is derived from the Ancient Greek erêmos meaning ‘lonely’ or ‘desert’ and phílos meaning ‘dear’ or ‘beloved’ referring to the species’ adaptation to dryland environments. As our climate is changing, so our selection of plants suitable for cultivation is adapting. Eremophilas withstand extended dry periods, are low water use, and produce masses of flowers in difficult conditions. Most are not affected by frost. They are so well adapted to dry, difficult conditions that in times of drought many species appear to
go into dormancy, dropping their foliage and looking almost dead. The plants can ‘hold’ in this condition for up to two years. Amazingly, following a deep soaking, plants completely recover. Eremophilas thrive in a wide variety of soil types. There are species for almost every spot in the home garden. Species range from small trees down to larger shrubs, medium shrubs, small compact shrubs and ground covers. Many of the smaller shrubs make excellent pot plants. Two larger excellent summerflowering hybrid Eremophilas are E. “Summertime Blue” and E. “Big Poly”. Both share parentage with E. polyclada and have well-displayed masses of flowers. E. “Summertime Blue” originated in northwest Victoria on the floodplains of the Murray River. Plants have widely spaced, narrow light

green leaves. The broad tubular flowers are a combination of light and deeper blue. Plants will reach two metres high and wide. They respond well to pruning after profuse summer flowering. Full sun is the preferred location, but they will tolerate filtered shade. Eremophila “Big Poly” is not fussed about difficult soil types. It is an open shrub, similar but taller than E. “Summertime Blue” and can be pruned upwards to form a small tree. It is also useful as a fast growing hedge and will attain two to three metres in two years. It thrives in full sun or partial shade. The flowers are similar to E. “Summertime Blue” but are a soft mauve colour. These two eremophilas strike readily from cuttings of firm new growth during the warmer months. Established plants are usually available from the nursery trade.

YOUR HEALTH Dal Zotto Wines Pinot Grigio 2019
THE events of this year have seemed to make it move at even a faster pace than it usually does. While time spent confined might have dragged on for some, our determination to get past the pandemic had us watching news bulletins, seeking daily updates and counting down double donut days with fervour. This year the closer we got to December, the better and brighter it all began to seem. It feels like this Christmas and New Year will be celebrated with family and friends in a way it never has before, perhaps because we realise how much we’ve taken our freedom for granted. There might be a little more food eaten and a little more wine drunk this year, and among the selection will be Prosecco, Tempranillo, Sangiovese and no doubt Dal Zotto’s Pinot Grigio. It’s the one to try if you want a classic example of this beautiful variety. I love the fresh and uplifting fruity and floral aroma with a hint of honeysuckle and apple. It has a light, straw colour and a clean, fresh mouth feel with pear fruit and lemony cit-

Great when lightly chilled it makes an ideal choice for the table in warmer weather and is really food-friendly - especially with white meats, seafood and shared nibble plates. And if you get a chance to say a few words at your celebrations this year - raise a glass and don’t hold back on telling those you love how much they are appreciated.

This Day in History, 1933 ONE of Wangaratta’s best known businessmen and sportsmen, Dick Manley, was honoured with a dinner on this day, to mark his retirement after forty years in business. A large gathering assembled in the Town Hall on this night (a Saturday) in 1933 to pay him a tribute, not only as a credit to the business community of Wangaratta, but also as an expert rifle shooter, cyclist, horse racing supporter, and athletics meeting official.
◆ FUN IN THE SUN: Stay healthy and active this summer by planning your activities sensibly.

Stay healthy while enjoying summer SUMMERTIME means longer days, sunshine, picnics and barbecues. Here’s how to make the most of your summer and stay healthy, too. Be active, cool and safe in the sun Regular physical activity is an important part of a healthy lifestyle in every season. The warm summer weather can make it easy to exercise outdoors and get the whole family involved. Just be sure to take some precautions so you don’t get overheated. Exercise in the morning or evening, when it’s likely to be cooler outdoors. If possible, exercise in shady areas. If it’s too hot to go outside, work out at the gym, walk laps or climb stairs inside an air-conditioned building. Drink plenty of water. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Help your body sweat and cool down by drinking water frequently. Take children and older folk to the
park, turn on some music and dance, or get pedometers for everyone in the family and have a friendly competition to see who can log the most steps each day. Plan an active vacation. Camping, hiking, canoeing and kayaking are great ways to spend time in nature and get a lot of exercise. If you’re visiting a city, consider renting bicycles or taking a walking tour. Most skin cancers are caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. When you are out in the sun, wear clothing and a wide-brimmed hat to protect as much skin as possible. Protect your eyes with sunglasses that block at least 99 per cent of UV light. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. Put more on at least every two hours and after swimming or sweating.
Limit your direct exposure to the sun, especially between 10am and 4pm, when UV rays are strongest. Eat right Refreshing salads, melons, and berries add colour and flavour to picnics and outdoor meals. But because warmer temperatures can easily spoil food, you’ll need to be extra careful. Wash hands, utensils, containers and work surfaces before handling food to prevent harmful bacteria from spreading. Cook food the same day as the picnic, not in advance. Wash fruit and vegetables before cutting. Keep mayonnaise-based foods and other cold foods in an insulated cooler with plenty of ice or frozen gel packs. Throw out leftovers that have been sitting out for more than two hours.

Taking time to breathe Ŷ
From page 1
She taught yoga for four years and lectured in kid’s yoga at Australian Yoga Academy before moving to the North East this year. Beata says her two worlds came together and today she focuses on what she calls a simple, diaphragmatic breath practice that everyone can do and is the easiest way to calm people down. “I teach it to the kids so they can use it any time they feel stressed, mad, sad or angry,” she said. “I also do a little bit of movement with them to help them get out of their head and into their body - and then we sing together and use our voices to make different sounds, and play instruments. “There are all these games and different ways to get them to shift from being a little bit anxious, nervous and heightened - to drop into a calm, restful, relaxed and safe nervous state.” Beata said it was through her own exploration of therapies a decade ago, trying to heal
herself from her own family trauma, she found and settled on a practice that worked for her. She said she realised you didn’t necessarily have to go to a healer or pay for professional assistance, as while they have their role to play, there are ways you can help yourself. “It wasn’t until I started the regular practice of moving my body, breathing consciously and taking care of myself with yoga that I felt in charge of my own healing and happiness,” she said. “I realised you can DIY quite a lot and simple deep breathing was the most powerful thing for me - even more than yoga.” Sharing these techniques with a classroom of energetic, primary aged children is not without its challenges but she has developed ways to get their attention and to keep it. Having visited Myrrhee School regularly for two terms, she goes through a series of steps to help them transition from frenetic energy to total relaxation. They gradually learnt to trust and respect
her, having found it was helping them outside school too. Beata said at the end of every session is time to express gratitude and while the children were a little shy to begin with, they now become more comfortable and confident expressing themselves. She also conducts teacher training so teachers are comfortable continuing the breath practise and using it anytime they think the kids might need it. It couldn’t come a better time for a broader community coming to terms with COVID-19. “Not every child has a troubled family or has experienced anxiety, but we have all have experienced challenges of one kind or another after COVID,” she said. “It’s good to be able to express how you’re feeling, not be judged and to be okay with it.” Beata has been working with schools across the region and is currently working with the Rural City of Wangaratta in the hope of rolling out the program to another eight schools next year.

GONE FISHING
◆ WHOPPER: Xavier Dodgshun with a magnificent 60cm, 3.2kg brown trout caught on a Tassie Devil lure at the Eildon Pondage recently. WOW what a monster, well done Xavier.
Plenty of fishing choices over the festive period THIS is my final fishing report for 2020. It has been a tough year, but thankfully my fishing report can end on a high note with some fantastic fishing all around the region. The Ovens River has been fishing very well for Murray cod. Downstream of Wangaratta the reports have been a little bit patchy, but still pretty good. From all reports, the Ovens River upstream of Wangaratta seems to be fishing very well, with some really good numbers of Murray cod and trout cod being caught. The Broken River has also been fishing exceptionally well for Murray cod. I was sent a photo yesterday by Ryan Cumming of Mansfield with a whopping 90cm Murray cod caught at Lake Nillahcootie. I have had steady reports of yellowbelly being caught at Lake Nillahcootie as well, including one caught by Patrick Horne on a surface lure. Lake Hume is producing a lot of redfin at the moment. Shore based anglers are catching a lot of small fish while people trolling deep diving lures are catching a few larger fish, as well as some quite decent yellowbelly.
with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA Small to medium sized hard body lures seem to be getting the best results. I went trout fishing in a tributary of the King River late last week and had a very exciting time. I managed to catch seven brown trout up to 45cm and lost a few as well, all on a Strike Tiger curl tail grub soft plastic in Lava Lime colour. The water is starting to warm up a bit in the streams which may slow the fishing down in coming weeks. This is quite normal for this time of the year, and the trout will come back on the bite in March. Thank you to everyone that has supported my fishing column throughout this tough year. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, and I look forward to returning on January 13, 2021.

or indirectly impacted by the bushfires. “While many have already benefited from the grants and assistance we have to provide, I urge others to arrange a free face to face, telephone or video appointment with one of our highly experienced team members rather than self-assess,” Nerida Kerr, AgBiz Assist executive officer, said. As it’s important for us all to take some time out, our office will re-open on Monday January 4, 2021 to continue providing support and assistance to farmers, small business and rural communities.
