A YEAR of flame, isolation, and plague; through hardships and trust we stand. Charred skin trees with hollow, ghostly frames; shade-less silhouettes, like scars on the land. Giant guardians remain still, even after the rains; Buffalo River’s spirit finds a heartbeat on the sand. This poem, penned by Bobinawarrah wildlife artist and ‘Fumage’ specialist Maegan Oberhardt, speaks to the hardships and challenges we have all experienced in the past 16 months. While expectations and plans didn’t go as we thought they would, we learned to manage our isolation and fear and use the time to reconnect with or find new hobbies to keep ourselves busy and bond with family or friends in different ways. For Maegan, 2020 was spent creating new pieces for a solo exhibition and in December when art galleries were once again open to the public, Maegan held an interactive live demonstration of her fumage techniques. First popularised by surrealist greats such as Wolfgang Paalen and Salvadore Dali, ‘fumage’ is the highly specialised technique of dancing a flame underneath paper to leave a layer of soot. Working from her Bobinawarrah studio, Maegan takes this technique several steps further by etching the soot away with various tools to leave an incredibly realistic image of her subject. Using a candle as a base, she developed, experimented, burnt, destroyed, and learned how to use a flame to craft hyper-realistic animal images.

Fun with ferrets FERRETS are an increasingly common pet in Australia, making fun family companions or being used for hunting. Ferrets, weigh between one and two kilograms and come in a range of colours. Related to weasels, otters and badgers, ferrets differ from these animals as they are fully domesticated and rely on humans to provide their food and general welfare needs. Being carnivores they require a high protein, highly digestible, low fibre diet. An alternate option to the hard to find commercial ferret food is a high quality dry kitten food. As with all pets, there are a number of potential health problems to consider. Annual vaccination for distemper should be done in all ferrets and your local veterinarian can assist you with this. Distemper can be a fatal disease displaying signs from skin irritation to coughing, sneezing and eye discharge. Ferrets, just like dogs can suffer from sarcoptic mange mites. This mite causes dark crusts around the feet and nails often being referred to as “footrot”. Ferrets are also susceptible hosts to heartworm and preventatives should be considered. Naturally inquisitive animals, ferrets enjoy enclosures filled with tunnels, ladders and furniture.

with Chloe Trompf BVSc, Wangaratta Veterinary Clinic It is however, this inquisitive nature that can get ferrets into trouble by ingesting chewed toys or pieces of plastic which can become a medial emergency if they cause an intestinal obstruction. It is also important to “ferret proof” the house closing off access to any potential escape routes or areas that could be hazardous, including electrical cords. De-sexing female ferrets is important in not only preventing unwanted kits (baby ferrets) but reduced the risk of a number of serious and often fatal conditions. Females are induced ovulators, which means they will remain on heat until they are mated. This can potentially lead to a fatal reduction in red blood cells and can also lead to increased levels of oestrogen and subsequent fatal toxicity. De-sexing of hobs (males) and jills (females) will also reduce the odour associated with ferrets. Overseas removal of scent glands is undertaken however this is unnecessary if de-sexing is carried out. Ferrets make fun, easy to handle pets and can provide a lot of entertainment for the family.

◆ HEALTHY: Calendula officianalis (marigolds) have numerous healing options.

Calendula a versatile herb CALENDULA is a herb that has wide use throughout the world and is very easily grown in our area. Calendula was named because it has been seen to flower throughout the “calends of every month” and as we see, it has the same root of our word for calendar. Calendula is one of our polycrest herbs, meaning it covers many different systems of the body in a variety of diseases, both chronic and acutely. From gut health, reproductive complaints, skin irritations to cuts and scrapes, Calendula featured highly in our recent DIY family health workshop. The entire flowering head can be used. The petals are mild and delicate when eaten fresh, but under the

head is where a lot of the medicinal resins are found in Calendula. The leaves are said to contain iodine; however, I personally think this will depend on the quality of your soil. Calendula is a gentle but effective lymphatic; moving waste and fluid through the body to reduce painful and swollen lymph nodes especially in the armpits, groin and digestive system. It is helpful in recovery from colds and viruses that linger with swollen lymphs. Calendula is one of the best wound healers we have in our modern materia medica, offering relief to hot or red, swollen and puss-filled wounds. Calendula is also a bitter, exert-

ing action on the liver, gallbladder and digestive system helping with healing from food intolerances, leaky gut, and reducing painful and heavy periods. Calendula is also brilliant in our work with acne via its lymphatic, wound healing and gut repair actions. Calendula petals or leaves can be added to salads, stir fry or teas. Dried, they make soothing and healing oil for topical use. If you would like to discover more ways to use Calendula then please express your interest in a workshop or make an individual appointment with North East Natural Health to discover how calendula and friends can improve your health today.

Michelini Wines Barbera

ON a local radio station the announcer invited listeners to ring in and spruik their home town. It came in the wake of a visit from a pollie who was talking up regional Australia and encouraging city dwellers to make the tree change and cash in on a better lifestyle. There were no shortage of people wanting to talk up their town and it reminded me how many great little centres there are in North East Victoria, each with their own unique personality. Myrtleford is one such place which is full of beauty, character and history and the entire Alpine valley is simply spectacular at this time of year. It’s a great place for Italian inspired food and a wine like Michelini Italian Selection Barbera. This Piedmont variety is made in the traditional style and it is has a deep purple red colour and lifted aroma which reminds me of ripe blackberries with just a hint of chocolate. A medium bodied wine, it’s fresh, fruity and little floral, but there is a background of spice with that blackberry and cassis fruit which is a nice balance. It has a pleasant mouthfeel, the savoury flavour is long and

with Christos Miliankos, North East Naturopath Group ◆ FOOD FIGHT: Getting your children to eat healthy food can be difficult, but it’s important to remember that they won’t starve themselves. If they have no other option, they’ll eat the broccoli you served them.

Family meals, kids and food that flavour continues after the pleasantly dry finish. Very food-friendly, this wine should be enjoyed with pizza, pasta, pork ribs or polpette, indoors or outside just before the sun goes down. A real little Alpine beauty. PRICE: About $25 a bottle.

This Day in History, 1872 BRIGHT got and lost a new suspension bridge across the Ovens on this day in 1872. It was finished late on the 23rd, a Saturday, and overnight, after an assemblage of local larrikins had jumped up and down on it, Bright didn’t have a suspension bridge. Its supports gave way and it unsuspended itself into the river.

FAMILY meals can be one of the most enjoyable parts of the day though it can also be utterly challenging and stressful. What kids eat and don’t eat can be very emotional for the parents and children. Children use food as emotional leverage, as do parents. How often do some parents say ‘eat this food and then you can have some dessert’, or even ‘just have one bite and then you can have dessert’, ‘eat three mouthfuls then you can go to the park’. Children learn pretty quickly how much they can get away with. When I grew up it was pretty much a rule that we don’t get up from the table until our plate was clean. That’s what I learnt . there was always ice cream in the freezer and creamy soda to quench our thirst. Maybe that’s why I was 20kgs

heavier at 16 years of age than I am now. I remember when our oldest kids were one and a half years old we were really struggling with them saying ‘no’ to everything we were cooking for them. It was exhausting. At the time my wife and I were doing a parenting course over the phone and I had a bit of an ‘a-ha’ moment. The counsellor said do you know that kids will never starve themselves? She added ‘if it’s not available then they can’t have what they want. If you tell them that you have created a healthy meal for them to nourish their body and this is what is available to them until the next meal then they have no argument. Children are dictated to by their stomachs. They will eat eventually.

It was the best advice I think I had received to date - it just took all the emotion out of it. It was a no brainer. What she suggested was to simply only offer the leftover meal until the next mealtime - to put some glad wrap on the food and every time they asked for something to eat then warm it up for them. So we tried it and it only took a few meals for them to learn that this is just what happens and they can’t have plain pasta cause ‘that’s a carbohydrate, not a meal!’ I wonder how many parents on this planet have never had a problem with their kids’ diets? Let’s take the negative emotion out of it. Food is to be enjoyed as nourishment and the social connectedness that it brings. Bon appetit.

Painting with fire to sooth the flames Ŷ

From page 1

“I use watercolour paper and sketch the subject then begin layering carbon soot, just like paint, onto the sketch,” she explained. “I then remove layers by etching with various tools to render the shapes and details.” Maegan refers to the process as ‘Painting with Fire’ which is quite a literal translation of how she creates her hyper-realistic artworks of wildlife species at risk. Growing up on an Angora goat stud farm in rural Queensland, the natural world and the native animals that inhabit it have always been part of her life, and now they influence her art. “Chickens and horses lived alongside native wildlife species and when I had time, I would spend it drawing pictures of wildlife,” Maegan said. “It was easy for me to recognise the differences between individuals

of the same species and growing up surrounded by animals taught me to appreciate the natural environment and the creatures that live there. “It also gave me the opportunity to study their features, individual characteristics, movement and expressions. “They became a part of who I was, so working with them now is nostalgic for me.” In regards to the animals she chooses to immortalise with her technique, Maegan said she determined to give each animal a voice and be heard. “I’m using man-made fire on a by-product of trees which represents man vs nature and the animal life caught in-between - literally carved out of our carbon footprint,” she said. Maegan’s journey in her artistic career is certainly on an upward projection, having achieved resi-

dent artist status at the renowned Morpeth Gallery in the Hunter Valley alongside Masters in Wildlife Realism Art, and earning herself a semi-finalist position for ‘Galah’s Playground’ in the 15th Art Renewal Centre’s International Salon, which was her first serious competition. In addition to these achievements, Maegan was also juried and accepted as an Associate Member of the Society of Animal Artists earlier this year, which is quite a prestigious honour, and one that (by all accounts) is difficult to get into. Maegan will be exhibiting her latest works and conducting an interactive, live demonstration of her painting with fire technique over the Easter long weekend at the Bright Chalet in Delany Avenue. There will be more than 60 pieces in the collection including the most recent additions of ‘Joey Scout’ and ‘Heartbeat

The Bright Art Gallery will have the original ‘Heartbeat on Buffalo River’ in their Autumn Art Exhibition as well. GONE FISHING

TECH & SCIENCE

◆ WHAT A WHOPPER: Charlotte Kilner with an armful of Murray cod. Charlotte caught this huge 101cm long fish using a cocktail Frankfurt as bait in the Ovens River right in the heart of Wangaratta last week. The fish was released.

Whopper cod caught IT’S not just the colour of the leaves that is changing at the moment, so too is the fishing. The Murray cod fishing has become a lot more hit and miss in recent weeks. Plenty of cod have still been caught, including some monsters, whilst reports of fishless trips are also coming in. Charlotte Kilner caught and released a magnificent 101cm Murray cod in the Ovens River right in the heart of Wangaratta last week. Charlotte caught her monster cod on... wait for it. a Primo cocktail frankfurt. When I asked Charlotte if I could use her photo, her reply was “That’s totally OK, I love to encourage women/girls to get out there and have a go”. What a wonderful and unselfish attitude. I went fishing with Brett Corker last Thursday night and we managed to catch one Murray cod each for the three hours that we were fishing. Mine was caught on an orange Predator lure and Brett’s was caught on a purple spinnerbait. We had to use lures..because I ate all the Primo cocktail frankfurts on the way out. My father and I fished Lake

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA Buffalo last Wednesday where we managed to catch approximately 40 redfin and one Murray cod. The cod was 54cm and was trolled on a Halco Crazy Deep diving lure while targeting redfin. Of the redfin we caught, we were able to keep 20 half decent fish for the table. Small soft plastic curl tail grubs and live worms caught the most fish. Last week I fished in a couple of trout streams where I found the trout were really fired up. I caught quite a few on a combination of small minnow lures and small soft plastics. The soft plastics were small black Strike Tiger nymphs. With a lot of black crickets around at the moment, black is my go to colour while trout fishing.

NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ GREENER PASTURES: Hydrogen fuel is predicted to become a $12 trillion industry by 2050.

Emergent technologies A GREAT deal of emphasis has been placed on the acceleraation of technologies related to the impacts of COVID-19, but there are a bevy of scientific advancements and emerging technologies on the horizon. This week, I thought we’d take a look at some of the most interestign and exciting endeavours. Microneedles for painless injections and tests These tiny needles, at no more than the depth of a sheet of paper and the width of a human hair, could bring us pain-free injections and blood testing. “Microneedles” penetrate the skin without troubling underlying nerve endings, and can be attached to syringes or patches, or even mixed into creams. They could allow blood tests to be done at home and sent to the lab or analyzed on the spot. And because their use doesn’t require expensive equipment or high levels of training, testing and treatment could be delivered in under-served areas – making care more accessible. Sun-powered chemistry Making many of the chemicals we rely on requires fossil fuels. But a new approach holds the promise of reducing the sector’s emissions

North East

by using sunlight to convert waste carbon dioxide into useful chemicals. Recent developments in the sunlight-activated catalysts needed for this process are a step towards creating “solar” refineries to produce useful compounds from the waste gas, which could be turned into everything from medicines and detergents to fertilizers and textiles. Electric aviation Electric propulsion would allow air travel to cut out carbon emissions, slash fuel costs and bring about big noise reductions. A host of organizations from Airbus to NASA are working on technology in this area, and while long-haul electric flights may still be some way off, and there are cost and regulatory hurdles, there is significant investment in the space. Lower-carbon cement Today, 4 billion tonnes of cement – a key component of concrete – are produced every year, in a process that requires the burning of fossil fuels. This accounts for around 8% of global CO2 emissions. As urbanization increases over the next 30 years, this figure is set to rise to 5 billion tonnes. Researchers and start-ups are

working on lower-carbon approaches, including tweaking the balance of ingredients used in the process, employing carbon capture and storage technology to remove emissions, and taking cement out of concrete altogether. Quantum sensing Imagine self-driving cars that can “see” around corners, or portable scanners that can monitor a person’s brain activity. Quantum sensing could make these things and much more a reality. Quantum sensors operate with extreme levels of precision by exploiting the quantum nature of matter – for example, using the difference between electrons in different energy states as a base unit. Green hydrogen When hydrogen burns, the only byproduct is water – and when it’s produced through electrolysis using renewable energy it becomes “green”. Earlier this year it was predicted green hydrogen will become a $12 trillion market by 2050 and that it could have a key role in the energy transition by helping decarbonize sectors – like shipping and manufacturing – that are harder to electrify because they require high-energy fuel.
