A hand of halos for Josh By BELINDA HARRISON

JOSH Paul has always liked to tinker with bits and bobs and pieces of metal and wood and now the 18 year old from Bright’s hobby fills in his spare time around his full time job. “The first thing I ever made from metal was when I was around nine or 10 years old,” Josh said. “I was staying with my grandparents on their farm in central New South Wales and I made a model house which included all the small pieces of furniture within it.” Throughout his early schooling life in Bright, Josh’s love of metal and wood continued. “I would often build my own contraptions when I was younger and I continued this interest when I started year seven at Cathedral College in Wangaratta,” Josh said. “For two or three years, I did wood and metal work at school but it has always been a hobby.” In June 2021, while in the midst of completing his VCE via onsite and home schooling, the garage in Josh’s parents’ backyard started to become his own personal workshop.

Complexity of cat flu CAT flu is the common name for the disease complex of multiple different bugs that cats can get in their respiratory system. This refers to any flu like symptoms that cats can get including sneezing, coughing, watery eyes and discharge from the nose. There are multiple diseases that can cause these symptoms and these include feline herpes disease, feline calicivirus, chlamydophyla felis, mycoplasma and bordatella. Lots of these diseases cannot be cured or removed from the body completely as they are viruses so will be in the body all the time but the immune system will fight them off, this is why the symptoms will come and go. When animals are stressed or unwell they will display signs of cat flu. The vaccination for cats covers two of the diseases that cause cat flu, feline herpes virus and calicivirus and if used correctly should prevent cats from getting this disease. However even animals that are vaccinated can show symptoms of cat flu especially if they have an unknown history because they will commonly get the diseases off their

with Ovens and Kiewa Veterinary Hospital mother when they are young and then live with this disease for the rest of their life. However it is very important to keep cats up to date with their vaccinations as these can decrease the severity of the disease and reduce the risk of them picking up other diseases associated with cat flu. These symptoms can be treated but normally do not require medications - they are better managed through managing the environment. This includes reducing stress in the environment especially if you have multiple cats in a household, keeping cats warm in cold weather and ensuring they always have adequate food and water available. However sometimes if the symptoms are severe or they have a secondary bacterial infection they will require medicating. If you are concerned that your cats are showing signs of cat flu please call your regular vet.

◆ PERFECT MARRIAGE: Home gardeners can share in the happy result of the marriage of Chamelacium x Verticordia or ‘Paddy’s Pink’. PHOTOS: Helen Van Riet

Paddy’s Pink adds colour

GERALDTON Wax (Chamelacium uncinatu) is endemic to Western Australia. Its natural range is from Kalbarri to Albany and along the south coast to Esperance. C. uncinatum is a well-known reliable garden specimen. There are about 30 other species of Chamelacium. Importantly, Chamelacium species and hybrids are Australia’s leading export cut flower. They are now in the top 20 flowers in terms of volume sold in Europe. Last year Australia’s total value of fresh cut flower production was worth $293 million, of which a total value of $8.4 million was exported. In recent times, much cut flower production has gone off-shore where costs are lower. Since 2019, strengthened Australian biosecurity regulations have given a welcome respite to pressured local producers. Verticordia species are extraordinarily beautiful Western Australian flowers. There are about 150 species, ranging from prostrate groundcovers to medium to large shrubs and small trees. Some 20 species have been wild-harvested for the cut flower industry for over half a century, and more recently plantations for commercial production have been established. The genus Verticordia (feather flowers) is in the family Myrtaceae and closely related to Geraldton wax (Chamelaucium species). A ‘marriage’ was just waiting to be engineered. In 1995 a breeding program was initiated at the Plant

Sciences Faculty of Agriculture of The University of WA with support from the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation. One aim was to produce hybrids of Chamelacium and Verticordia with attractive flower colours and an extended flowering time. Chamelacium x Verticordia ‘Paddy’s Pink’ was a spectacular success and a welcome addition to the cut flower industry. Home gardeners can share in the happy result. Paddy’s Pink has narrow, bright green foliage with a pleasant fragrance. Dense terminal clusters of soft pink flowers are borne in mid to late spring. The blooms are held on the plant for an extended period. Close examination of the flowers reveals the mixed parentage of wax flowers and feather flowers. For best results in your garden, plant Paddy’s Pink in well-drained soil in a sunny position. Paddy’s Pink is drought resistant and copes with medium frost. Feeding lightly with a low-phosphorus fertiliser after flowering will be beneficial but is not necessary. This little gem makes an ideal pot plant and can be pruned to shape after flowering. Plants are generally disease-free. Over about five years in good conditions they may reach 1 ½ metres x 1 ½ metres. Paddy’s Pink must be propagated from cuttings to preserve its hybrid characteristics. Cuttings of firm new growth taken in the warmer months strike reliably.

YOUR HEALTH Chrismont Wines La Zona Barbera 2017

IT is hard to make plans when the weather doesn’t know whether it’s Arthur or Martha. One minute we’re ditching the coats and boots in favour of frocks and sandals and organising an al fresco lunch, the next we’re searching for the winter woollies again and stoking up the fire. While I love the wood burner in the winter, it was kind of nice to clean it out and do away with the wood pile and the dust in favour of having all the windows open again. But then the snow began to fall and it was back to toasting our toes along with the marshmallows. Luckily Chrismont La Zona Barbera is an all-seasons wine, great with meats grilled briefly on the barbecue or with cheap cuts braised long and low with wine and herbs in the slow cooker. Apparently Barbera is Italy’s third most planted grape and comes from the Piedmont region, but it also seems right at home in the King Valley. I’m a fan of this wine’s juicy quality; it is magenta coloured and alive with lifted aromas of blackberry fruit, balanced with

◆ HEALTHY ADVICE: Naturopaths often advise to eat more of particular foods rather than foregoing all your favourite foods.

the savouriness of French oak spice. It feels soft in the mouth smooth and velvety -and is richly flavoured with dark berry and ripe cherry fruit. That fruitiness is ideal with venison, lamb cutlets or a simple steak, but it also melds beautifully with a hearty osso bucco. One to enjoy whether indoors or out, eat in or take out.

COST: About $27 a bottle.

This Day in History, 1824 HUME and Hovell descended from the hills and reached the stream they named the Ovens. They are thought to have passed the future site of Beechworth in the area of present day Baarmutha and descended into the valley between Murmungee and Everton, arriving at the Ovens just downstream of present day Whorouly.

See a naturopath and have your coffee (or dairy or wheat) too WHENEVER someone finds out we are naturopaths they are either really intrigued or sceptical. Often it generates some kind of conversation about the supplements they take or their fear of seeing a naturopath in case they have to stop drinking coffee or eating bread for the rest of their lives. Whilst dietary modification and supplemental prescriptions are part of naturopathic care, seeing a naturopath does not mean giving up all your favourite foods, eating kale or taking a shopping bag worth of supplements. A large part of our practice focuses on what foods you could add in, rather than take out. There are so many wonderful ways to cook or jazz up basic meals, improving flavour, texture and ultimately digestive compatibility for a person that can make

with Sophie Lorback, North East Natural Health Centre a huge impact to how you feel. We often ask people to eat more of those foods, rather than forgo their favourite treats forever. We would never dare ask a new mum to give up chocolate or coffee. In fact patients are often surprised when we encourage them to eat more of certain foods guilt free or change the timing of when they consume foods, rather than cutting them out. Everything in moderation. We were taught that the difference between medicine and poison is dose.

This is true for food ... and coffee. Believe it or not, some people can’t digest kale very well, especially when raw or in a smoothie, and studies have shown that if you drink one cup of coffee daily your concentration improves. However, more than three coffees daily can reduce your ability to absorb nutrients and for many people this will contribute to poor sleep, anxiety and loose bowels. Everyone’s threshold is different due to weight, metabolism digestive strength etc. Naturopathic food prescriptions are all about working out what helps or hinders your health with supplements being the icing on the cake. If you are unwell they can be a helping hand whilst you take time to making lasting changes to your health, diet and coffee consumption.

GONE FISHING

A hand of halos for Josh Ŷ

◆ REWARDED: A nice small stream brown trout caught on a gold bead headed nymph in a tributary of the King River last week.

Trout streams never looked better, lakes fishing well THE trout streams are looking amazing for this time of the year, the best that I have seen them in late November for a very long time. As a result, trout fishing is fantastic right across the region. Usually by now we are seeing water temperatures start to rise and the trout fishing slow down, but that is not the case this spring. Regular rainfall events and below average temperatures are really prolonging this great trout fishing spring. I went fly fishing in a tributary of the King River last week where I managed to catch a dozen or so brown trout, mostly small. I was using a two fly combination with a Royal Stimulator dry fly floating on the surface, and a gold bead headed nymph suspended about 30 cm underneath it. I would cast them both out and the focus my attention on the stimulator. Either a trout would take it, or it would disappear suddenly under water as a trout grabbed the nymph and pulled the stimulator under - very exciting fishing. Most trout took the nymph, however a few did come to the surface for the stimulator.

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA I took my kayak to Lake Hume last Wednesday. It was meant to be calm, but it wasn’t. I floated around like a cork in a tidal wave. I managed to catch just one redfin 10cm long for my efforts. There was a boat with two blokes in it anchored right in the middle of my favourite trolling run. I could see them catching redfin one after another - it was one of those days! The redfin and yellowbelly are still running red hot in Lake Hume at the moment. I haven’t heard as many reports of trout being caught in the lake though, however there has been a lot of absolute monster trout caught in the Murray River directly below Lake Hume, some of which are up over 70cm long.

FEATURE STORY

From page 1

He has spent the past six months filling it with bench and floor grinders, polishing wheels, safety equipment and his most essential item - his ring bending tool. “At this stage I am mainly focused on making rings and my brand name of Hand Halo represents the ring being a halo of the hand or finger,” Josh explained. “I would love to increase my skill and knowledge around making bangles in the future though. “They can be a real challenge to make as they are not circular but rather an oval shape and it can often be hard to get the right proportions. “But once you perfect the craftsmanship it takes, they can be absolutely stunning pieces of jewellery to make and to own.” So far, Josh’s favourite piece of machinery to work with is the polishing wheel. “When you polish the rings, some of them change from a dull metal to a mirror reflection, and I love watching that transformation occur,” he said. Josh’s decision to take his creations and ideas to the next level was influenced by social media as well as his own parents, who each run their own businesses. “I came across an individual on social media who made jewellery out of vintage flatware, and I thought, ‘I could give that a go’. “I really love working with vintage flatware as they are versatile in so many ways - you can bend and shape them into any shape and size. “Vintage flatware also has an endless amount of designs and patterns on the handles of them so the designs for rings are limitless.” Starting a business at any time or age is challenging, however Josh has taken on the challenge and learnings with youthful enthusiasm and an open mind. “It has come with massive amounts of learning, that’s for sure,” Josh laughed. “Crafting and selling my rings is the part of the business that most people

see, but it’s the behind the scenes that makes the surface things work. “I have had to learn how to build my own website through programming and watching lots of video tutorials on how to do it. “I have also had to create and design my own graphics and get them made for packaging and advertising. “Local graphic artist Lynne Edgar helped me with the graphic design for the logo, and I am grateful for that. “Sourcing products such as the tins

for packaging and the vintage flatware has been exciting and a learning journey and I am so pleased with how it has been going and what I’ve created so far.” You can find Josh and his Hand Halo masterpieces at local markets in Bright, Myrtleford and surrounds, as well as at Wangaratta youth markets.
