Toni Harris’ monochromatic perspective
A CHRISTMAS gift of a small Kodax pocket film camera when she was a child started a love affair with photography for Rutherglen’s Toni Harris. “I was hooked from the time I got that camera,” Toni said. “When I was at high school, we did darkroom photography as part of the art program and that really clinched the deal for me. “I still love the alchemy of a darkroom and the traditional processes but I don’t have a darkroom of my own at the moment.” Born in Corryong, Toni’s family moved to Wangaratta when she was 10, and Toni completed her schooling first at Wangaratta Primary (Chisholm Street) and then the Wangaratta High School. “When we moved to Wangaratta back in 1986, I didn’t really like Wangaratta but it is amazing seeing things with more mature eyes and now I love this part of the world. “The countryside, mountains, rivers and the lifestyle that we have in this area is outstanding.” Toni’s muse is travel and she loves to capture unique and candid moments. “Street photography for me fits this brief exactly - placing or having people in landscapes for scale and relate-ability is something that I really enjoy.”

Red Wattlebirds RED Wattlebirds (Anthochaera carunculata) are large honeyeaters easily identified by the fleshy reddish wattle on the side of their neck. They have grey-brown bodies with white streaks, a yellow belly and pale face. Baby Red Wattlebirds are duller in colour and have a brown eye instead of red. Red Wattlebirds live across southern Australia and are frequent visitors to gardens in urban areas. In winter, Red Wattlebirds are more frequent visitors to towns and suburbs, where you’ll have a much easier time spotting them. In south-eastern Australia, lookout for Red Wattlebirds poking around under your eaves and gutters for spiders to take back to their chicks in the nest. Red Wattlebirds migrate in search of winter food. They love to drink the nectar from flowers in local parks and gardens, as they are part of the Honeyeater family. They eat mostly nectar but also some insects and can be very aggressive towards other birds that have their eye on the same flowers. Red Wattlebirds can be difficult to see when they’re hiding amongst shrubs and bushes. Listen out for the Red Wattlebird’s
with Foundation of National Parks and Wildlife (FNPW) loud, harsh ‘cookey cook‘ and ‘tobacco box, tobacco box‘ calls. They sound quite like the Noisy Friar Bird. If you want to encourage Red Wattlebirds to your garden, plant nectarproducing plants like grevilleas or paperbarks (melaleucas) as these provide some of the Red Wattlebird’s favourite food. Red Wattlebirds have a loud repetitive call and can be as annoying as neighbour’s barking dog, especially as they start to breed. Bottlebrushes and other native trees are winter flowering natives, providing much needed food during cold times of year, and the wattlebirds will not let any of the nectar go to waste. Like all native birds, the wattlebirds are protected, and there is not much you can do to discourage them from a favourite food tree. The best way to live with Red Wattlebirds is to enjoy their buzzing activity as a sure sign of the coming spring, and trust that they will move on to sweeter nectar once the next species of native tree comes into flower.

with Mandi McDonald LINGA-A WHILE NURSERY ◆ PREPARATION IS KEY: Taking care of key tasks early in spring will ensure good fruiting and less fungal diseases.
Spring tasks for best results
AS spring nears you will start to see your fruit trees waking up from their winter dormancy. The blossom and fresh new leaves are just waiting for the warmer days when they will burst open. It is an exciting time in the garden, but also a time when extra care is needed to ensure we set trees up for a bumper crop. Some of the pests and diseases that impact fruit trees need to be treated at very specific times or the window for treatment to have maximum effect will be missed. The fungal disease leaf curl is a problem in our area. It affects
the healthy growth of peaches and nectarines. Ideally, a copper based spray should be used at the time of pruning, when the tree is dormant. If you missed doing this, spray can be applied when the buds are just beginning to swell and before they burst. Speak to your local nursery for more detailed advice. Plum trees are affected by plague thrip and aphids which attack new growth as it emerges, causing deformed leaves and damaged blossom. Because the affected growth is curled and stunted it is often mis-
taken for leaf curl and treated as that. Use yellow sticky traps to reduce pest numbers. A registered insecticide will also be necessary to minimise damage. Spring is the best time to feed your fruit trees because this is when they need plenty of energy to produce new growth and support developing fruit. Keep the area around the base of the tree clear of grass and weeds, apply fertiliser and mulch well. Keeping on top of these few tasks in early spring will help you enjoy delicious homegrown fruit. Happy gardening.

YOUR HEALTH Michelini Wines 2021 Arneis
AS the new season approaches and the days become longer we all seem to get a bit more of a spring in our step. While we go forward ready for whatever the pandemic throws in our way, nothing will stop our spirits being lifted by a little sunshine and some warmer weather. The state of play means that if you can get out and about you probably should, and there couldn’t be a better time for sampling new release wines that will suit a lighter menu. One of the varieties which should be firmly on our radar in North East Victoria is Arneis and Michelini Wines in Myrtleford, where you can try it as part of their range, is well worth a visit. The white grape variety pronounced “Ahr-nase” comes from the North West Italian region of Piedmont and the name translates to “the little rascal”. It seems appropriate; with the word “racy” also coming to mind when it comes to its fresh and zesty character. Michelini Wines Arneis has a lightly golden colour and a gentle aroma of lemon

and nectarine fruit. It is bright and lively with lemon and lime flavour, there is a backdrop of stone fruit and a mineral freshness with the zing of citrus acidity on the finish. It makes an ideal choice with seafood, chicken and most lighter meals; the crispness on the palate particularly good when indulging in cheeses or creamy sauces. Get out and enjoy your freedom while you can - because it turns out this is a race. About $25.
This Day in History, 1915 AS wounded troops were returning from Gallipoli, others were being struck down even before they had left Australia. An outbreak of meningitis at army camps in Victoria had hospitalised a number of soldiers, including recruits from the North East. On August 25 1915, one of the victims of the meningitis epidemic was buried at Footscray. He was Private the Rev. Walter Benjamin Bauer, who had been in camp at the Flemington Showgrounds. The death of the Rev. Bauer the previous day had caused profound shock in the district - in Wangaratta, where he had been the first student at St Columbs Hall College, at Milawa and Whorouly districts where he was active in pastoral work, at Tallangatta where he was posted after his ordination, at Longwood, his posting following Tallangatta, and at Mansfield, his residence from 1910. A number of other North Eastern soldiers died of the disease.

An age-old question with a new answer IF a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound? This is an age-old philosophical question and the answer depends on what we mean by “sound”. If we say that sound is defined as what we can hear, then the answer is obviously “no”. However, “sound” is a physical property, caused by vibrations travelling through the air (or perhaps water or the ground), caused by something moving. Although the sounds made by a tree falling may not be heard by anyone, it does make a lot of sound. Applying this idea to what we recall following a conversation can lead to some interesting thoughts. When we are listening, our brain receives a message from our ears (and probably our eyes and other senses simultaneously) and assigns meaning to the message. If we are not listening or can’t hear, we
won’t recall what has been said. For someone with a hearing loss, the message may be either incomplete and not make sense or not be heard at all. They might say that the message was not even spoken, while the speaker may say that the message has been forgotten. The brain cannot remember what it has not heard. In the audiology clinic, we frequently are told by the client that they get frustrated by a lack of communication from their friends and family (“they don’t get my attention, talk too softly, etc”). The opposite story comes from friends and family, who frequently observe that the client is becoming forgetful and unresponsive, or is just not listening. As the brain cannot remember what it has not heard, the effect of a too-soft communication is that a message was not said at all. To improve this situation for a client with a hearing loss, the first step is to im-
prove the message reaching the brain by amplifying the sound appropriately. Sometimes this is done by the listener cupping their ear or moving closer. Sometimes hearing aids may be recommended and many people are amazed not only by the improvement in the spoken messages from their family and friends but also the environmental sounds which they have been missing. Assuming the listener is able to hear the message well, the next step is to ensure that they are paying attention - no one will be able to recall the message if they are not paying attention. So even if someone has appropriately fitted amplification, make sure to get their attention before speaking. If you are concerned about your hearing, it may be time to have a hearing check. Toni’s monochromatic perspective Ŷ
From page 1
Toni’s aunt - Trudy Mountain - a photographer herself, has also been an inspiration to Toni over the years and Toni said she still keeps her to the mark when seeking advice. That advice and inspiration has no doubt helped Toni break through the often competitive process to be accepted as an exhibitor in the Open Program of the Ballarat International Foto Biennale which opens on August 28. The event attracts more than thirty thousand people including significant international and Australian photographers. Founded in 2005, the Ballarat International Foto Biennale is a notfor-profit event and immerses the historic town of Ballarat in photographic art. It is also fast becoming the most significant and prestigious photographic arts festival in Australia. “I first exhibited in the Open Pro-
gram in 2017 and I’m really looking forward to being featured again,” Toni said. Entrants initially had to submit three ‘hero shots’ which the committee uses for publicity and in the booklet for the event. “The process to enter is to submit a collection of images and a brief to the venues directly who are hosting the Open Program,” Toni said. “It is purely the venue’s choice as to who they choose to exhibit and what their proposed exhibition will be about - it can be quite competitive and the requirements can be rather specific. “I am fortunate enough to have 20 works this year in an exhibition called “A Monochromatic Perspective’’ which focuses on black and white images taken from moments I’ve captured on trips around the world.” Predominantly self-taught, Toni has tried three times to complete a

Diploma of Photography, however life has often got in the way so she has completed short courses ‘here and there’ to keep her skill levels up and augment known deficiencies instead. “I am also part of a few online forums that help push me into continuing re-inventing and honing my style and competitions and commissions also help to keep me on point.” In May this year, Toni’s work was displayed at the Brunswick Street Gallery and at Federation Square during the International Festival of Photography. She has also been part of a recent pop-up art event in Chiltern and won the Creative Photography competition in the Rutherglen Tastes of Art Prize. That particular image is now hanging at The Other Place café in Rutherglen. Toni describes her photography as her passion and her bliss and

we appl aud you! The last 18 months have been challenging. We have all had to make changes and do things differently and our community and businesses have shown strength, innovation and resilience. You have all done a great job in supporting the community and we encourage you to continue to work together as we move forward through this uncertain time with new approaches to staying safe and connected. It is now more important than ever, that we continue to support all of our local businesses and the people they employ as well as focusing on staying safe.
