Venturing into viticulture By SIMONE KERWIN
IN a strange year which saw them spend the bulk of two terms in front of laptop screens, Galen Catholic College students are savouring the chance to kick off an historic outdoor project for the school. Year eight and nine integrated studies students, and year 11 and 12 VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) students are assisting in the creation of a Galen vineyard, a project set to be an ongoing avenue for developing skills that could translate to work in the viticulture industry - and potentially generate fundraising for the school. While the vines which have been planted in recent weeks will not produce wine for four to five years, the school hopes to be able to source fruit from local wineries which would allow students to learn other aspects of the winemaking process while they wait for their own grapes. Teacher Gerard Kelly, who brings qualifications in viticulture and winemaking to his role, said it was an exciting, history-making moment when students began planting the vines, on school land on the corner of College Street and Park Lane.
◆ MAKING HISTORY: Galen Catholic College year nine students Charli Rispin (15), Sam Phillips (15), Emma Whitehouse (15) and Lindsey Harder (14) were among those who helped plant the first vines for the school’s new vineyard. PHOTO: Kieren Tilly

BOOK NOOK Fowles Wines
Farm to Table Pinot Noir 2019 IT was great to see so many people take advantage of having the freedom to move and head off to the city or the country to the catch up with friends and family after months apart. The Hume Highway hasn’t been that busy for a long time, with the ring of steel making it seem like it was created for the sole use of B-doubles and delivery vans. From talking to people it seems those who haven’t done it yet have made plans to do so, with convenience food outlets along “the fume” among the most popular for meets and handovers. But why do that when Fowles Wines offers a much more enjoyable option for North East Victorians who want to meet city friends half way? It also has a wide range of wines to taste and choose from, including the Farm to Table Pinot Noir. Fowles say as grape and sheep farmers, the Farm to Table range embodies its connection to the land and enjoyment of it through quality food and wine. The Pinot Noir is easy drinking enjoyment, from the bright cherry and slightly strawberry aroma through to the soft, cher-

A crowd pleaser, it’s a great choice over lunch or dinner, particularly if there is beef, roo or especially duck on the menu the fruitiness and savoury edge balancing the richness of duck fat. What’s more, with presents to deliver when you get there, there will be room in the boot to stock up before you head home. Now that’s convenient.

This Day in History, 1880 ALL avenues to secure a reprieve had been tried, and Ned Kelly was informed that his execution would take place. Outside the Metropolitan Prison, on this day in 1880, a crowd estimated at five thousand gathered to wait for the appointed time. At 10 o’clock the execution was carried out.
Women Don’t Owe You Pretty “I WILL be buying a copy of this book for every person I care about I’m sure you’ll love it too” - Freyja, Wangaratta. ‘WOMEN Don’t Owe You Pretty’ is the book I wish I’d read 10 years ago when I was figuring out what femininity and womanhood meant for me. This is the manifesto young women like me need, and I will continue to recommend it to everyone who will listen. Author Florence Given is insightful, reflective and incisive in her breakout title where she explores the ways in which women can be dictated by social standards on what they can and can’t do, enjoy or be. Her suggestion that we should treat ourselves as our own first choice is not a new one, but hearing it reinforced so strongly is powerful.
It felt ground breaking to read that such autonomy is not a privilege, but a right to ensure our own contentment and happiness. Equally influential is Given’s openness in sharing her revelation that heterosexuality is not the normal setting, but anywhere on the spectrum from there to homosexuality is both natural and beautiful. The author defines feminism as a necessary tool to empower women to live life on their own terms and uplift the people around them - as she says, “you are the love of your own life”. This idea of dressing how feels best or chasing the career that excites me at the deepest levels of my soul is revolutionary. With accessible language, Women Don’t Owe You Pretty is an excellent introduction to living life with your
own dreams at the forefront of your mind. Publisher: Octopus Publishing Group (UK), ISBN: 9781788402279. Genre: Biography & True Stories/ Memoirs. Availability: In stock. What’s it actually about? Women Don’t Owe You Pretty is the ultimate book for anyone who wants to challenge the out-dated narratives supplied to us by the patriarchy. Through Florence’s story you will learn how to protect your energy, discover that you are the love of your own life, and realise that today is a wonderful day to dump them. Florence Given is here to remind you that you owe men nothing, least of all pretty. Warning: Contains explicit content (and a load of uncomfortable truths).

“I’ve told the kids they’re making history while they’re planting, and that in years to come when they go past, they’ll be able to say to their own kids that they started that vineyard,” he said. Mr Kelly oversaw a similar project while working in Victoria’s Western District, and also has experience in career training, so said he was looking forward to seeing the Galen vineyard brought to fruition for all the benefits it could bring students and the school. “As educators, we should be on about giving kids as many opportunities as possible, and it would be very remiss of us if we didn’t give them the chance to learn about what is a key industry in this region,” he said. “We are starting agriculture as a subject for year 11s and 12s next year, studying things like canopy maintenance, so the vineyard will be the major project for our senior students.
“Eventually, we hope to work the vineyard through other year levels, and other subjects; for instance, the art department may come in later to help develop the vineyard’s label,” he said. “Viticulture is a science, and there is a lot of maths involved as well, so it lends itself to a number of subjects; we want to involve as many faculties as possible. “From next year, there will be students working here almost every day.” Year nine students who undertook the first planting had also been involved in designing the rows of the vineyard, including calculating the number of posts and plants required for each, as part of the school’s integrated studies program, which draws a number of different subjects together in one. Half the Galen vineyard is being planted with shiraz grapes, with cabernet sauvignon and nebbiolo to follow in coming years on the one hectare plot, which will eventually feature 20 rows

with 104 vines per row. “At the moment, we are purchasing vines, but we’d like to propagate our own vines,” Mr Kelly said. “We’ll teach the students grafting; how to take cuttings and graft them onto root stock.” The school is now working on purchasing winemaking equipment which would mean wine could be made next year using grapes supplied by local wineries. “And we hope in the future to see a number of successful vignerons emerging from Galen,” Mr Kelly said. The vineyard is one of the sustainable projects being developed by Galen, others being the Mullinmur wetland project in partnership with Wangaratta Landcare and Sustainability (aimed at caring for the billabong and its native and indigenous flora and fauna) and sustainability, weed control and irrigation management on the school’s farmland.

GONE FISHING
◆ COMING SOON: Murray cod season opens next Tuesday and early indications are that we could be in for a great start to the season.
Time to target trout before streams heat up WITH some quite extreme heat in the forecast, I think now is a great time to go trout fishing in many of the region’s small streams because once that heat arrives there is a real chance that the trout fishing will slow right down. Just in the last week the weather has really started to feel like summer, and the environment is responding. I went bait fishing in the Ovens River in Wangaratta and found that I was getting a lot of nibbles from freshwater shrimp. The shrimp have been quiet until the last couple of weeks and now they have come to life. I did manage to catch a number of small Murray cod and trout cod (which were released), as well as carp while fishing with worms in the King River during the week, as well as one small yellowbelly. So while the shrimp may be very active at the moment, so too are the fish and with Murray cod opening just around the corner the early signs are that we should be in for a fantastic start to the season. I went trout fishing in a tribu-

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA tary of the King River during the week. I managed to catch quite a lot of trout on soft plastics and a small minnow lure. After that I switched to the fly rod and caught quite a few trout on a Royal Stimulator dry fly. The dry fly fishing was fantastic. As I said at the start, now is a great time to go trout fishing because once the extreme heat arrives soon, the water will warm up a bit and the trout fishing will likely start to slow down. Just quickly, from the reports I have received, the yellowbelly fishing at Lake Nillahcootie has started to slow down. Yellowbelly have still been caught, but not in the numbers they were a few weeks ago.
Who are we and what do we do? AGBIZ Assist’s commitment to helping rural and regional small business, farming enterprises, families and communities during difficult times has brought many rewards over the past three decades. AgBiz Assist is funded by the Australian and Victorian governments to provide practical assistance to those experiencing, or at risk of, financial stress. When times are tough due to adverse impacts and events, such as downturns in the economy, illness, changed market conditions or natural disasters, the body is able to provide a helping hand. The free and confidential support services offered are based around working together to fully understand, and be part of, developing solutions and managing the changes needed to create the best possible future outcomes. While the core business remains rural financial counselling, AgBiz Assist has,
over the years, broadened the scope of the services offered to cater for the ever changing demands of modern living. Most recently the focus has expanded from assisting those in agriculture and related small businesses, to encompass the needs of all small businesses. In response to the accumulative effects of drought, fires, floods and COVID-19, the highly engaged teams have managed to provide a wide range of support to businesses and communities throughout the region. Increased state and federal funding has enabled AgBiz Assist to ramp up manpower and provide specifically targeted assistance via such programs as the Dedicated Dairy and Wine Industry Support Programs. Record numbers of clients have also sought help from the Rural Financial Counselling Service team. Through Agbiz Care, the charity arm of the organisation, we have attracted
