Jess returns to her field of dreams

By SIMONE KERWIN

WHEN Jess Whitehead finished her last game of school footy in year 12, she took a moment. “I remember thinking at the end, this is the last game

I’ll ever be able to play,” the 32 year old said. A decade or so down the track though, the local primary school teacher and footy fanatic glimpsed an opportunity to return to the field. “I was talking to Chris

Doyle and he said Wangaratta Rovers were getting a girls’ team together,” Jess said. “I said, ‘I’m in - what do I have to do to make this happen?’ and it went from there.” Already closely involved

with Wangaratta City Football Club, where she’d channelled her football endeavours and played 17 seasons of soccer, Jess joined forces with Celia Piesse as co-coach of the Rovers’ inaugural team in the North

East Border Female Football League. Since then, she’s been an integral part of the development of the Hawks’ female football arm, and now plays in and co-coaches the open women’s team, umpires the

under 17s most weeks, drives the bus which carries young players to games around the region, and gladly takes on sundry duties that are part and parcel of football club involvement.

Introducing new kittens CATS can be very territorial and sometimes they don’t like change very much. Your cat is probably used to being the only cat around and probably had complete run of the house. Suddenly there is this strange other cat or kitten who, from the existing cat’s point of view, is just getting in the way. Whenever a new cat is introduced into a house with other cats it takes time for them to get used to each other, and your first cat might be a little jealous of the newcomer, so you need to take things slowly and carefully at first. The key points to consider when introducing cats are: Introduce the existing cat and the new cat in stages - gradually increasing exposure time; Keep the new cat in a separate room for about a week so that the existing cat can become accustomed to their smell and presence and the new cat has time to adjust to their new environment; This separation and gradual introduction may help to reduce the overall anxiety of the situation and provides a good basis for the development of good relations; After the new cat has settled in to their part of the house you can slowly introduce them to the rest of the house by bringing them out for 10 or 15 minutes at a time under your supervision; Eventually they will be confident

with RSPCA Knowledgebase enough to wander freely around the house and the other cat should be used to them; In the initial stages there may be some hissing and tail swishing - but this should settle down after a few days; Ensure that the existing cat has an area that they can go to for privacy to get away from the new cat; Provide at least two litter trays and allow the cats to eat separately; Ensure the existing cat receives a lot of individual attention from you; Be aware that it may take some time for a relationship to develop. Not all cats will get on with each other. In situations where cats do not like each other in the long-term, they may still be able to co-exist in relative peace by seeking out their own space and spending most of the time on their own. Some cats have the ability to find a balance and share their territory. Having access to different rooms so that they may be alone can assist in these situations. In rare situations where cats seriously injure each other or begin to show signs of severe stress as a result of being housed together, they may need to be separated. Your local vet can provide more information about available options in these situations.

◆ WALL FLOWER: The Pelargonium australe grows well in a niche in a wall.

◆ WHAT FLOWER IS THAT? Pelargonium Australe are often confused with genera geranium. PHOTOS: Helen Van Riet

Australian Pelargoniums AUSTRALIA has six endemic species of pelargonium. Two popular garden species are Pelargonium australe and Pelargonium rodneyanum. The common name ‘storksbill’ is derived from the Greek pelargus for a stork, referring to the seed capsules which are in the form of the head and bill of a stork. World-wide there are around 280 species of pelargonium and around 17,000 cultivars. Pelargoniums rank as one of the highest number and value of potted flowering plants sold worldwide. P. australe was introduced to English horticulture in 1792 and remains a popular garden subject in Europe. When establishing a new garden or where there are steep rocky slopes or large areas requiring quick cover, P. australe is a good candidate. Plants thrive in full sun or dappled shade. New plants are easily propagated from fresh seed. Cuttings of firm growth produce roots readily.

Plants are perennial and can be cut back after winter to encourage fresh new growth. The roots of older plants develop tubers, which in former times were an indigenous food source. The soft-pink flowers are prolific and long-lasting and are held above the crimped, round foliage on firm stems. The foliage is attractive in its own right. A similar plant is P. rodneyanum. This beautiful perennial has trailing stems which form a light ground-cover up to 50cm across. It flowers profusely over spring and through summer with rich magenta flowers. Plants may not be long-lived, but germinate readily from fresh seed. Both P. australe and P. rodneyanum require well-drained soils. They do not tolerate water-logging. Both are ideally suited for growing in containers or hanging baskets. They make delightful and easily managed borders in the formal garden. There is continuing confusion between the genera geranium

and pelargonium. Until the 18th century, both were grouped together in the geranium family. Geraniums are commonly called ‘cranesbills’. Pelargoniums are commonly called ‘storksbills’. To identify which is which, the shape of the flowers is helpful. Geranium flowers have five similar petals, which are ranged symmetrically around central grouped sepals and stamens. Pelargonium flowers also have five petals - two upper petals (somewhat like rabbit’s ears) and three lower petals which point downwards. Geraniums originate mainly from the Mediterranean region. Pelargoniums predominantly from Southern Africa. Note: Erodium cicutarium (‘common storksbill’) is a troublesome weed and should not be confused with P. australe or P. rodneyanum. It was inadvertently introduced to Australia with seed crops. It is a member of the Geraniaceae Family and was originally from the Mediterranean region.

De Bortoli Rutherglen Estates 2020 Pinot Grigio A RECENT visit to the Melbourne CBD and to a couple of the city’s most popular restaurants left us feeling old and with our heads spinning. We were crammed in so tightly it was hard to use cutlery without bumping elbows with the person next to you, the music was so loud we couldn’t hear and a torch was required to read the menu. The food tasted absolutely fantastic - I just wish I could have seen what it was. When we left an hour later there was a queue waiting to come in and the sun had still barely set. It had us yearning for peace and quiet, wide open spaces and a glass of Rutherglen Estate Pinot Grigio. The fruit is grown at the De Bortoli Melville’s vineyard on the eastern edge of the Rutherglen region. While there were two fires in 2020 which came within a hundred kilometres of the site they didn’t affect the area directly although there was a later than usual start to harvest. This wine is made in the traditional, dry and unoaked Italian style and it is all about the fruit, starting with fresh, lively aromas

of pear and apple. There is pear fruit and perhaps Meyer lemon in the flavour which is refreshing with a cleansing but balanced acidity. It is also a versatile drop with food, suiting everything from lighter, seafood entrees through to richer, white meat and creamy pasta mains and it’s also great with cheeses. In fact it can stay at the table for the entire night - and thankfully so can we. About $19.

This Day in History, 1926 WITH her golden years behind her, Beechworth promoted her picturesque location to attract visitors. To open up the rugged beauty of the hills around the old powder magazine, a winding road was carved out by workmen, under the supervision of Mr Sambell. The Forward Beechworth movement, which had been a keen promoter of the making of the road, had ambitious plans to install electric lights along the road, to give it a ‘fairyland’ appearance by night. On this day in 1926, rain marred what would otherwise have been a triumphal opening of the road. Mrs Diffey cut the ribbon and the day wound up with a dinner at Tanswell’s Hotel.

Stress and your body

WE all have our own definitions of stress. We have all experienced stress and in times like these, it’s probably easy for you to list your top five stressors. Stress can be anything that is happening to you, around you, inside you, or even only in your brain. Stress can impact us in many ways, but today we will concentrate on how stress might look from a physical perspective. You might be having trouble eating: when we’re stressed, we tend to block out the messages our bodies are sending us, even though we don’t mean to. This could manifest as a lack of appetite - not feeling hungry, not remembering when you last ate, not noticing the grumbling tummy, or not eating at all. It could also manifest as eating too much - more meals, bigger meals, more snacking. Try and remember to eat regular meals, focus on fresh (local if you can) foods that fuel your body and brain. Remember, the closer the food on

your plate looks to how it grows, the better is usually is for you. You might be having trouble calming down: when we’re stressed, our body can get stuck in overdrive. Overthinking, overdoing, overreacting to things that normally wouldn’t produce such a strong response for you. The key to calming down your body and your mind is in your breath. Notice when you’re having trouble calming yourself, and notice your breath. When you bring your attention to your breath, try to slow it down. Notice your breathing, then slow it down. Long, slow inhales and long, slow exhales. Having enough oxygen flow around our bodies helps all of our regulatory systems work in sync, which helps us feel better. You might be having trouble staying physically well: coughs and colds might happen more often, might stay around longer, or might turn into something

more dangerous like pneumonia when we’re stressed. Our immune response is lowered when we’re stressed, so we don’t have the ability to fight off bugs and viruses like we usually would. You might have heard this information before, but the best way to stay physically well when you’re stressed are the ways we’re all avoiding COVID: stay home if you’re sick, see your doctor if things are getting worse, wash your hands regularly and maintain good general hygiene, and try to limit the contact you have with people who are or might be unwell themselves. So when stress impacts your body, remember to look for the physical signs, rest where possible, eat well, and be kind to yourself. Look after yourselves, and each other - we’ll get through this, together. Jess returns to her field of dreams Ŷ

Meanwhile, she is also coaching Wang City’s under 14 girls, the same side she has guided since they were under 11s and has taken to three consecutive grand finals. Jess is also gaining a reputation for her recruiting skills, having convinced several students at St Patrick’s Primary School (where she currently teaches) to don the Rovers’ brown and gold, along with a number at her previous workplace, St Bernard’s Primary. “Whatever I can do to make it work - I just want it to succeed, and I’m so jealous of these young kids having the opportunity to play right through,” she said. “If I could take 20 years off my age and follow that path, I would.

“I think of these Rovers girls in 10 years’ time and think how great it is for them; hopefully we’ll be watching some of our local girls in the AFLW in the future. “I didn’t have that opportunity when I was young, but I would have loved it.” Jess’ passion for footy, and particularly the Essendon Football Club, began when she watched the ‘Baby Bombers’ win the 1993 AFL Grand Final. “That’s my first football memory; I was four, and about to turn five the following week, so I chose James Hird (who famously wore number five) as my favourite player,” she said. “That started the ridiculous love affair with the Bombers and Hirdy.” As well as a life-size Hird cut-out and other memora-

bilia, Jess “accidentally” now owns 70 Essendon guernseys, including Dreamtime and Anzac Day special editions, and about 50 of them have number five on the back. Among them is one from “that year”, to which she added the ‘Stand By Hird’ sign. So it’s no surprise that she proudly wears the number five guernsey when she runs out for the Rovers. “When I started I was wearing 44, but Kylie (Barton, Rovers veteran) found out about my passion, and made sure I got the number five,” she said. Jess is on the verge of 30 games for the Hawks, and while she recently aggravated the shoulder injury she suffered during the pre-season, she is determined to reach the 50 game milestone.

“I think I’ve got a few years left - I’ll play as long as I can,” she said. She was among the female Hawks who ran through a guard of honour formed by the club’s senior men’s team when they took part in a historic moment on May 8 - the first female football game included in an Ovens and Murray league fixture. “We were lining up to give them a guard of honour, but they switched it around for us,” she said. “It was a small gesture from the men, but it really meant a lot.” Jess said it was an indication of the strong support for female football at the Rovers, where numbers are steadily increasing, and she encouraged girls and women of all
