Eureka! Eureka! By BELINDA HARRISON IN October 2019, when we last spoke to Paul Camilleri about his love of detecting, he told us that the ‘Holy Grail’ for he and fellow detectors, Mick Stanton and Troy Tobias, was to find gold Sovereigns . and in a year like no other that was 2020, Paul and Mick did just that.
The Australian gold Sovereign is the rarest and most sought after Sovereign in the world and the first one was struck at the Sydney Mint in 1855. The closest the trio came to finding a Sovereign was a few years ago when Troy found a gold Sovereign holder. Unfortunately, it was full of
dirt rather than Sovereigns, but it spurred the three men to keep on searching. In a paddock in the North East that they had detected plenty of times before (the exact location Paul, Mick and Troy are keeping mum on) Mick’s Sovereign set their machines ‘pinging’ on a warm early-October day. “It was a Sydney mint Half

Sovereign from 1862 which weighed 3.98 grams,” Paul said. “We were pretty excited because we’ve wanted to find something like this for years.” Two short months later it was Paul’s turn to ‘find gold’. “I scored my very first Sovereign in December 2020,” he said. “It was in another paddock
in the North East that we had detected before and the coin I found is a 22 carat, 1843 English Sovereign weighing in at 7.98 grams. “Both coins contain approximately 90 percent pure gold.” The pair plan on keeping their Sovereigns, but are they sitting on a gold mine? A quick online search
showed that the 1843 English gold Sovereigns are worth anywhere between £300 for a NVF (Nearly Extremely Fine) Marsh 26 rating coin with some contact marks and rim nicks and £6,200 for a Marsh 26A (GF) Good Fine coin with some surface marks and edge nicks.

Atopic dermatitis DO you have an itchy dog? It may be allergies. An itchy dog is one of the most common reasons for an owner to take their pet to the vet. There are many things that cause a dog to itch, however the majority of cases are due to parasites on the skin, infectious agents or an allergy. Dogs can be allergic to many different things which can cause them to itch. This includes parasite bites (like fleas), harmless substances in the environment (e.g. dust, pollens, moulds) or even something in their diet. What a dog is allergic too is most likely due to their genetics. This means that some dogs have an immune system which behaves differently to other dogs. Atopic dermatitis is a chronic itchy skin disease that occurs when the immune system has an exaggerated response to allergens in the environment. Symptoms you might in your dog include: t Itchiness: excessive scratching, licking, chewing, biting t Redness of skin t Changes to the skin colour t Thickening of the skin t Hair loss

It is a relatively common skin condition and in some populations up to 15 percent of dogs may be affected. A diagnosis is made once other more common causes of itchiness have been ruled out (such as parasites or skin infections), as well as based on your dog’s history, age and breed. Unfortunately, atopic dermatitis is not curable and the goal of treatment is to manage the symptoms. There are a number of different treatment options which include anti-itch drugs, skin barrier treatments, immunotherapy and management of environmental allergens. None of these treatments are perfect and all have their advantages and disadvantages. However, it is possible with some intervention to make your dog comfortable so they can live a happy, healthy life. Talk to your local vet if you are worried about your itchy dog.
with Belinda McPherson ◆ NOT JUST A PRETTY FACE: Borage has many functional uses, including the relief of skin issues to increasing breast milk production.
Brilliant borage
BORAGE was the very first herb I ever grew as a teenager. I never used it for anything, but I grew it religiously every year without knowing anything about it. Now as a naturopath and herbalist I know that different parts of the plant can be used for everything from skin issues to “blood purification”, to increase urine flow, to increase breast milk production and to assist in a wide array of respiratory issues. But most of all, I grow it for its stunning flowers. Borage is easily grown from seed in the North East from September to February. Borage loves a sunny to semi shaded position that is well mulched and well-watered especially in hot weather. They aren’t fussy about soil but will appreciate
soil of a pH between 5.5 and 8. Borage has few enemies in the garden, but they do prefer to be watered at ground level avoiding water splashes on their leaves. A monthly fertilise with worm juice, organic liquid fertilizer or the like will see a strong and healthy plant grow in front of your eyes. If in its ideal spot, borage will grow to approximately one metre tall and then flower profusely with beautiful blue and pink flowers. Young leaves can be used raw in salads giving a mild cucumber like flavour, cooked like spinach or dried for later use. The flowers are sweet and can be used as dessert decorations for cakes or in ice cubes for spectacular cocktails. But my most favourite way for using the flowers
Newsmedia Advertising Works, Reach more people more often
is in a simple syrup to enjoy with gin and soda. Eating borage should be done in moderation as there is a risk of adverse effects on the liver in large quantities. Always make sure you have the right plant identified, start off slowly and pay attention to how your body reacts to the plant and consult a trained herbalist if you have any questions. Borage makes an amazing companion plant for beans, brassicas, squash, fruit trees and strawberries. Its scent confuses adult moths and tomato hornworm so they don’t lay their eggs. So, plant in amongst your veggies and you will get amazing salads, beautiful cocktails and less bugs and slugs. So, it’s a winwin for borage.

Chambers Rosewood Vineyard 2015 Shiraz IF I was a contestant on Masterchef one of the last things I would cook would be duck. Like risotto, whenever someone attempts a duck breast it appears doomed to fail, often because tastes are so different and the judges always say it’s overcooked if it isn’t still quacking. While I’m not suggesting it should be brown it shouldn’t be red and fleshy either which in my opinion makes it as tough and chewy as overcooking it, albeit a considerably more unpleasant experience. The fat needs to gradually render, the skin needs to be a little crisp and the flesh needs to be just pink and tender, as though some actual heat has been applied. I had one cooked at home this week and while we did it outside to avoid any splatter, it was a success, especially with a glass of Chambers Rosewood Shiraz. This earthy red wine has a savoury, berry aroma with peppery spice. It’s warm and woody, with a weighty texture and radiates leathery, bramble fruit - its sa-

vouriness working well in contrast with the rich sweetness of the duck. It is relaxed and shareable and would also work well with barbecued meats. It takes some practise but when you get it right, duck breast is worth the effort. But perhaps stick to confit when ordering at a restaurant if you don’t want to get a fright.
Available from the cellar door in Rutherglen or local outlets. About $20.
This Day in History, 1974 JUBILEE Golf Club at Wangaratta certainly had its ups and downs over the years. This day in 1974 was one of the downs, when its clubhouse was destroyed by fire. The club had started in the 1930s in a paddock off the Yarrawonga Road, with cowpats on the fairways and sand greens to match the sand traps. In the early 1960’s the club purchased Taylor’s property on the foothills of the Warby Ranges, determined to have greens which were green. A drought came and members carted millions of gallons of water to keep the greens alive.
Weight loss inhibitors HAPPY New Year to you all. The New Year brings about many wishes and New Year’s ‘resolutions’ and I know that weight is a big one for many of us. Here are 5 things that can curb our weight balance. 5 Weight Loss Stoppers 1. Inflammation: aches and pains, poorly digested food (e.g. diarrhoea), infections etc can be a sign of inflammation which increases cortisol levels in the body. This can increase the likelihood of fat storage. It is important to address underlying inflammation for weight loss. 2. Stress: this can increase fat storage by increasing adrenaline and cortisol. Stress management techniques such as meditation, yoga or Tai Chi can be useful. Learning to say ‘no’ effectively and looking after yourself with enough sleep, water, exercise, etc are good long term strategies to stay healthy.
3. Toxins: chemicals and pesticides in food, heavy metals (from large fish, amalgam fillings, tap water etc), drugs (including recreational ones like cigarettes and alcohol), pollution and environmental toxins like plastics can act as hormone disruptors and effect metabolic rate adversely. Ideally eat organic eggs, fruit and vegetables, free-range chicken and small fish like sardines as opposed to large flake or tuna. There are several detoxification programs available to release accumulated toxins. Use stainless steel water bottles or Tupperware and don’t leave them in the car to get hot or freeze them. Minimise microwave use, using paper towel or another plate to cover food and if you must use plastic, ensure it is microwave safe. 4. Hormone imbalance: low thyroid function, low oestrogen post-menopause and general hormonal imbalance can wreak havoc even with peo-

ple with the best diet, exercise program and intentions. 5. Low Muscle Mass: for some people, walking is just not enough. As we age, unless we incorporate some resistance exercise into our life, we tend to lose muscle mass. This is especially so when we follow ‘fad’ diets and fasts that do not contain enough protein to maintain muscle. Muscle mass dictates metabolic rate. Incorporate exercise like yoga, pilates, weights or a pump class, or simply use your own body weight with push-ups, dips and sit-ups at home after your very brisk walk. It is important to be treated like an individual as there are many more reasons we accumulate excessive fat. That’s why we like to tailor a program for you. ◆ HOME COUNTRY: The 1843 English gold Sovereign picked up by Mick’s detector in October.

Eureka! Eureka! Ĺś
From page 1
There were 5,981,968 of these bullion Sovereigns minted in 1843 with the obverse side designed by William Wyon and the reverse by Jean Baptiste Merlen. So even though they might be easier to find than other Sovereigns, high grade examples are always in demand. The 1862 Sydney mint Half Sovereign on the other hand is valued between $390 AUD for a VG8 grade and $8300 AUD for an MS61. A couple of interesting things about the 1862 coins are that although they bear the date 1862, records in London indicate the ‘1862’ half sovereigns were all struck in 1863. There were approximately 210,000 coins struck in that run (with about the same struck the following year and dated 1863) but there are thought to be less than 1000 examples still surviving today. They are, as Paul said, made from 91 percent gold, with the other nine percent being silver,
which gives them a brighter yellow appearance compared to other Sovereigns. All Sovereigns struck at the Sydney mint had the 91 gold/ eight percent silver except for the 1879 issue which contained the more usual gold and copper alloy mix. “We hope they won’t be the last Sovereigns we find, but people spend their lives searching for these elusive old gold coins and in such a crazy year, Mick and I both walked away with the top prize, which was a shining light. Of course it wasn’t as easy as just turning on the detector and heading out to the paddocks; Paul, Mick and Tony have put in years of research, a lot of hard work and there’s a certain amount of luck that goes into actually finding something so rare. “Being that Mick and I found the other coins in October and December, we reckon Troy must be due to find his coin in February, but we’ll see what happens I guess.
