DOWN a well-kept, dirt road in Molyullah past paddocks with flocks of sheep and herds of grazing cows, a long line of gum trees guide you to a hidden gem; the one acre of colourful, lovingly created and maintained Birchwood Near Benalla garden that belongs to Gary and Julie Campbell. Beginning as a subdivision of Julie’s parents’ farm in 1985, the house, lawns and gardens provide picture perfect views of surrounding farming properties and the Lurg hills. During the 1990s, Gary and Julie held occasional open gardens but after retiring in 2012, they made the decision to intensify their efforts to improve the garden and were subsequently able to hold at least one open garden every year between 2013 and 2018. As the couple’s knowledge of how and where to plant their beloved salvias or tulips, magnolias or irises increased, so did the size of the garden, word spread and visitors came. “We have a number of garden beds which hold different plants and shrubs, including vegetables and natives and there’s a dry zone and microclimate area too,” Julie said. “We have oriental poppies, wisteria, iris and about 200 different types of salvias with multiple plantings achieving lovely swathes of colour across the garden beds. “We have worked hard to plant our flowers and shrubs in complementary areas and we’re still learning what works best where.” Gary said they spend every spare moment they can out in the garden pottering about, weeding, dividing and replanting and generally checking the overall health of their plants. “We do all the gardening ourselves but for construction or improvements to retaining walls, edging, path surfaces or installation of fountains, archways or gazebos, we call in local landscaper Wally Pastusca to help us out,” he said.

Collie Nose COLLIE nose is the lay term for a disease called Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE) which is an immune mediated disease where the body’s immune system works overtime and attacks itself. This manifests as an ulceration of the nose and can look like scabs over the nose itself. This is made worse by exposure to sunlight so in summer and spring this may manifest. It is called collie nose because collie dog breeds are predisposed but any breed can get it. The only way to definitively diagnose this disease is to take a biopsy of the lesion under general anaesthetic or sedation to send to a pathologist for interpretation. However, it is commonly treated as collie nose on the assumption based on the clinical
with Ovens and Kiewa Veterinary Hospital presentation of the lesions. This is a treatable disease and is normally managed using topical or systemic corticosteroids which suppresses the immune reaction in the body. Topical steroids are safer than systemic steroids as they do not have the same side effects on the body. A very effective way of managing and preventing this is to use sunscreen on your dog’s nose especially if they have a white nose or nonpigmented nose. If you are concerned about your dog or think they have lesions that might be similar to Collie nose, get in contact with your regular vet.

Pink stars - a stellar addition CHOOSING a name for a baby girl? Maybe you could consider Calytrix. This name was popular in Roman times and is trending popular again. The word translates to “star flower”. The genus Calytrix consists of about 75 species, all endemic to Australia. The name alludes to the delicate and breathtakingly beautiful dainty, five-petalled flowers. Calytrix are members of the myrtle family. Most are small to medium shrubs with star-like flowers ranging in colour from white yellow, pink, and purple. Calytrix tetragona (fringe myrtle) is the most common member of the genus. It is an understorey shrub which occurs naturally in the eastern states. It is common in our area and flowers in mid-spring. The flowers are usually white, but shades of pink are not uncommon. A beautiful pink-flowered dwarf form is the subject of this article.
This form has fine neat dark green foliage, and when not in flower is still an attractive garden specimen. Flowering is spectacular, from fine dark green foliage tiny pink buds rapidly extend and open to a show of densely clustered baby-pink flowers, completely obliterating the foliage. As with many spring ‘bloomers’, flowering is spectacular and brief: about two weeks. Flowering is followed by red/ brown seed capsules. The epithet Tetragona = ‘four-sided’ refers to the seeds. These are attractive in their own right and are used as cut flowers in floristry. This spring delight is suitable as a garden feature or in a pot. The dwarf variety will reach about 1m x 1m. Plants require a well-drained, sunny or partly shaded position. All forms of C. tetragona are frosttolerant. Once established, plants need little attention. A light trim
after flowering will maintain shape and compact form. An annual application of slow-release fertiliser is beneficial. C. tetragona, like many understorey shrubs, is short-lived - about nine years is average. In bushland there are often swathes of plants of different sizes, ages and maturity. For such a beautiful plant, it is wise to plan succession plantings. Seed can be difficult to germinate. Cuttings of half-ripe tip growth can be taken now. Dip these in growth hormone, place in propagation mix (90% perlite, 10% coco-peat). Set in a warm humid and well-lit position, and keep moist. Roots should appear in about a month. Prick out plants into individual pots filled with a good potting mix and grow on. They will be ready to plant out in your garden or share with friends next autumn. C. tetragona Dwarf Pink is usually available commercially.

Politini Wines 2019 Nero d’Avola Rosato A SURE sign of spring is when everything in the garden goes a little crazy. There are heavy downpours followed by warmth and sunshine which means the grass grows before your eyes and creatures which have been dormant for months begin to make an appearance. I’m loving seeing the jacky lizards and skinks come out to play, sunbaking in the rockery and occasionally darting out to grab an insect from the grass. The bees are active, the birds are chatting and for some reason this year I still can’t get down my own driveway without the magpie swooping me, despite his kids having left the nest. At this rate it will be summer before I can safely collect the mail. Regardless, it’s the perfect time to mow, potter and relax on the verandah with a glass of wine like a Politini Nero d’Avola Rosato. Politini’s describe this wine as having the colour of a summer sunset and it certainly does; blush pink and beautiful with a bright floral aroma. There are hints of cherry and perhaps even a little strawberry in the flavour but it is still pleasantly mineral and savoury, with more complexity than you might

with Naturopath Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) ◆ ACTION OR REACTION: The body’s fight or flight response affects different areas in different ways.
Fight or flight response and stress expect from something so pretty. The cherry fruit tang, hint of spice and clean finish make it suitable for the table and a great match with antipasto, bruschetta and something like a garlic prawn pizza. It’s also an ideal choice to enjoy while watching the sun go down - after that pesky magpie has gone to bed. COST: About $17 a bottle.
This Day in History, 1856 BILLY the Puntman, convicted and sentenced to a lengthy term in prison for robbing Her Majesty’s mails between Wangaratta and Greta earlier in the year, expired on the side of the road at Craigieburn on this day in 1856. It was thought Billy had taken his own life rather than go to prison, but it seems he expired from natural causes.
DO you frequently have a sense of foreboding? Do you find yourself catastrophising many situations such as thinking every health symptoms is a tumour or that something bad will happen to you? When we are stressed, our brain makes a story to make sense of itself and sometimes the default story becomes ‘something bad is going to happen to me.’ When this happens our fight or flight response is a physiological reaction in response to a perceived threat to our very survival. This response can be activated by many events including our feelings of being overwhelmed, irritated, frustrated, anxious or constantly ruminating about negative thoughts. In this fight or flight state, we may feel tense or alert (to fight off the threat or flee from the scene), and our sympathetic nervous system will send out

acute impulses to pump stress hormones like adrenaline and noradrenaline into our bloodstream which cause an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, sweating and muscle tensing. We might have intense focus (causing difficulty sleeping and zapping energy) or trouble focusing on unrelated small tasks. At the same time, our ‘non-essential’ organs like digestion are slowed as they are not important for survival in an acute threat situation. Stress triggers a cascade of events resulting in the adrenal glands becoming overworked and, potentially exhausted over time. The initial adrenalin rush is one we all recognise and occurs to alert us to imminent danger. This is useful when we need to perform, such as for a work presentation or reacting to an emergency to provide energy, strength and focus, but it
should be short lived. When stress becomes chronic, it results in continually elevated adrenalin and cortisol. These hormones raid our stores of nutrients leaving us feeling wired and or exhausted and may lead to frustrating symptoms such as poor sleep, weight gain and poor immune function. It is important to acknowledge that it is happening, remind yourself you are stressed, try some breathing/ mindfulness techniques that help to get you out of your head and into your body. Above all, if these feelings are consuming or you struggle to resolve them with simple strategies please seek professional assistance. Naturopaths have pretty hefty ‘toolbag’ of strategies, remedies and referral options that can provide great assistance so contact us today.

GONE FISHING

Opening the garden gate for charity
◆ CATCH AND RELEASE: A lovely trout cod caught on worms in the Ovens River last week. Trout cod are totally protected all year round and must be returned to the water unharmed at all times.
Spring conditions have really sprung fish on the bite AFTER a very slow start it would appear that spring is finally here, and the fish are going nuts all over the place. That spring warmth really gets all species of fish fired up. The trout streams are all looking as good they are every going to look at the moment. The water is still quite cold, the flow is strong and the fish are active. Just about every trout stream in the region that has trout in it is worth fishing right now. The Upper Buffalo River and its tributaries, the Buckland River and its tributaries, the Kiewa and Mitta Mitta rivers, Snowy Creek etc.. just to name a few. If you can’t catch a trout in a stream at the moment, then there’s a fair chance that there are no trout there. Last week I found a rare day with little to no wind and went trolling for yellowbelly at Lake Nillahcootie. I trolled for over two hours without a touch, and then between 6.30pm and 7.30pm I trolled three yellowbelly, all around the 25-30cm size. All fish were released, and

the lure that I caught them on was the new Old Mate diving lure. These are a smaller version of the popular Old Mate Murray cod lure. On Friday morning I fished the Ovens River in Wangaratta with worms, trying to catch a yellowbelly. I seemed to catch everything but yellowbelly. I caught two carp, and caught and released two trout cod and one Murray cod. One of the carp was 70cm long and gave me quite a lot of curry. There was a definite bite window between 6am and 7am. I caught four of the fish in that time, with the largest of the two trout cod being caught at 7.30am.
“The last Open Weekend we held in 2018 was early October and our tulips, Dutch iris, and tree blossom looked lovely,” Julie said. “We noticed though that our more recent plantings of iris were in flower at the end of October as well as our roses and more of the salvias so we decided that future open weekends would be late October. “In December 2019 we were thrilled to have well-known horticulturist Teena Crawford come to the garden and give us some advice. “We followed every suggestion she made and basically haven’t stopped planting since her visit. “We adore having garden lovers visit to chat about the challenges and learning points we have undergone - I’ve never met a gardener I didn’t like,” Julie laughed. From 2013 to 2015, money raised from the couple’s open gardens was donated to Melbourne Cancer Council Victoria and the Wangaratta Hospital while Benalla Hospital Auxiliary did refreshments. “Gary is a cancer survivor and we are so very grateful for the breakthrough research that brought about his successful treatment,” Julie said. In 2015, Julie and Gary contacted the Wangaratta Cancer Council Fundraising Group, the Wangaratta Hospital “Friends” and Benalla Hospital Auxiliary to help them run the weekends and equally share the total profits from the gate and refreshments. The three charities have assisted them ever since. “We have personally needed our two local hospitals (Wangaratta and Benalla) on numerous occasions and they have been wonderful so these three charities are very close to our hearts,” Julie said. “The first year (2013) we raised $700 and it has increased every year with an amazing total of $7500 raised in 2018 when we had about 500 people visit,” Gary said. The charity garden open weekend for 2021 will be held this weekend, Saturday, October 30 and Sunday, October 31 with volunteers from the three charity committees working hard behind the scenes to ensure everything is ready. “Normally we would have dozens of

volunteers rostered on to help over the weekend, but this year because of the COVID situation it is not safe for them all to come out as many are immune compromised,” Julie said. The reduction in available helpers means that the usual scones with jam and cream will be missing, however muffins, salad rolls, bottles of water and tea and coffee will still be available. This year, visitors can expect to see bearded iris, salvias, Dutch Iris, several different watsonias and a range of perennials in flower and Gary and Julie can’t wait to welcome visitors back after a three year hiatus. They are most excited about a white wisteria over a new gazebo and will have plants for sale including salvias, bearded iris and perennials. Local artisans including Catherine Pianta and Roly Ceenhuizes are also exhibiting in the garden. “Roly has an ingenious range of wine barrel creations and Cathy will have many of her creations for sale - which might make it a good time to start on the Christmas shopping,” Julie said. Major sponsors are essential to the weekend and the Campbells would like to publicly acknowledge this year’s sponsors: Woolworths, Benalla Residential Rural, Benalla Travel, Fruits and
Fare Benalla, Benalla’s Hides Bakery and Bertallis Bakery. Outside of the charity weekends, Birchwood Gardens is open by appointment only for wedding ceremonies, social group outings, family gatherings or photography shoots between September and early May. Outdoor daytime wedding receptions can also be booked at Birchwood and the Campbells recommend The Elements Catering for alfresco dining as they bring everything needed. Admission for this year’s charity weekend is $8 per person with refreshments available to purchase and 100 per cent of profit going to the charities. There is a ‘porta-a-loo’ outside however, visitors with walking frame assistance are welcome to use the toilet inside. All current COVID requirements must be adhered to with check in via QR code or sign in sheet. For the most up to date information on requirements or to make a booking, contact Julie or Gary on (03) 5766 6275, via email at juliecampbellcecil@ gmail.com or visit birchwoodnearbenalla.com.au. The website also provides detailed directions to the property.
