World-first project trial underway By BELINDA HARRISON A WORLD-first study is being trialled at the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre by The Border Medical Oncology Research Unit in conjunction with the La Trobe University John Richards Centre for Rural Ageing Research. Oncologist and project Leader, Dr Christopher Steer, said study participants of the ‘eriatric Oncology in the Instagram Era project were asked to supply four photos that best represented their identity, home environment, what’s important to them and their mode of transport. “We are aiming to improve the supportive care of cancer patients over 70 years of age,” Dr Steer explained. “We use the photos to learn who the patient is and then interview them about their priorities, barriers and amount of support available to them to help tailor a care management plan that best supports their individual needs. “Around 800 of the patients seen at Border Medical Oncology each year are over 70 years of age so the need for a multidisciplinary patientcentred type of care is extremely important. “I don’t believe this type of geriatric assessment has been done in oncology before but photos have become a really easy way of communicating and we want to use that as a way of getting to know our patients better and enhancing their supportive care,” Dr Steer added. “Research has shown that geriatric assessment makes supportive care more age-specific, improves communication about age-related concerns, reduces treatment toxicity and improves quality of life.” Last year, the Geriatric Oncology in the Instagram Era project received a $20,000 grant from the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund with half of that funding coming from the estate of cancer patient Lorraine Dick.

Sugar gliders SUGAR Gliders live in the trees and glide between them using flaps of skin between their front and back legs. Adults can weigh as little as 150 grams. They are grey to brown with a prominent dark stripe over their foreheads, and have prehensile tails which they use to grip on to branches. Sugar gliders have a twin membrane that stretches from their little finger to their hind legs. When fully stretched out in flight they act as a wing or a parachute enabling them to glide across open areas in the trees. They have another use for these membrane wings: when they forage they use them as pockets to collect food in to take back to their young. These small marsupials live in eastern and northern Australia and nest in tree hollows or nest boxes. They are common in woodlands where there are plenty of food Sugar Gliders will venture up to a kilometre through open country to reach other forests and other glider communities.

with Vincent Ventura, Veterinarian They are thought to commute along electricity lines and fences and stop off at any tree along the way. A single tree left standing in a paddock or backyard can potentially provide a vital breeding link between one isolated glider colony and another. As they are only 15cm long and weigh up to just 150 grams, sugar gliders only need a small entrance to their nest which helps them feel safe from predators. Sugar gliders are social animals and will share their new home with several adult gliders and their infants. If warning off predators, you will hear them emit a series of shrill barks. Baby sugar gliders are tiny and can be very vulnerable to cats and dogs. A nest box high off the ground gives a glider family a safe start, but keeping your pets indoors at night will keep them safe after they leave home as well.

◆ IN FLOWER: Clematis aristata is also known as Old Man’s Beard. PHOTO: Victorian Government website, Yarra Ranges

Clematis Aristata AKA Old Man’s Beard THE intention of designing a naturalistic native garden is to create a pleasing landscape of structure, form, colour and contrasts. Flowers may be seasonal and are not necessarily the foremost consideration. There are very few plants which flower almost continuously. Brachyscome multifida (cutleaf daisy) is one exception that comes to mind. Yet the question: “what are the flowers like?” is often asked by folks who visit our garden and are interested in a particular plant. “What else is interesting?” is rarely asked. In my opinion, seeds of some plants are as eye-catching as the flowers. A plant of stand-out character when not in flower is Clematis aristata (Old Man’s Beard). This vigorous climber uses the structure of other plants for the twining leaf-stems to gain a hold. It wreaths its hosts with profuse white starry blooms in early summer. Plants will grow in most soils with a cool root run. But there is more... C. aristata is dioecious (male and female flowers are borne on separate plants).

In autumn, white fluffy clusters of seeds with long silky awns are borne on the female plants. In autumn, these conspicuous white fluffy clusters are a common sight in bushland and along rural roadsides. These seed clusters remain for several months. C. aristata is attractive when twining through shrubbery or trained to cover a fence or trellis. The bright green spade-shaped foliage can effectively offset paler green or grey foliaged hosts. Plants die back in late autumn and can be pruned in winter to just above ground level.

They will rapidly regrow in spring. C. aristata is a useful annual fastgrowing summer shade screen for training up over a trellis or pergola. Because plants use their leaf stems to climb upwards, provision of a vertical support is required. They are pruned annually. The species is variable, occurring naturally in all the eastern states. A number of forms are available commercially, some originating from moist gullies bear flowers up to eight centimetres across. Propagation is successful from stem cuttings or fresh seed.

FEATURE STORY

Morrisons of Glenrowan 2018 Primitivo SOME of us can be a little hesitant when it comes to trying a new variety of wine, especially if we’re not quite sure even how to say it. There are some doozies to pronounce like Beaujolais, Mourvèdre and Viognier, although my favourite to tackle at the moment (and usually stuff up) is Montepulciano. Unless they hail from your cultural neck of the woods, they are hard to get your tongue around, and attempting it with an appropriated accent can make you sound like a bit of wanker. The truth is even the experts don’t always agree on how some of these words should be pronounced, so don’t be afraid to smile, point and ask the person behind the tasting counter. If Bob is around at Morrison’s, you are welcome to ask him how the Primitivo (primma-teevo) should be pronounced or where the grape originates, because he’ll be only too happy to tell you. Then just try it and enjoy the wine’s inky, dark purple red colour and bright and vibrant forest berry aroma. The flavour is rustic and decidedly savoury - think cherry and blackberry fruit, tobacco,

World-first project trial underway spice and even a hint of liquorice in what is a medium bodied, meaty red wine. It was aged in French and American oak casks which impart those spicy wood characteristics. This wine would be great with spicy sausage or an eggplant parmigiana but it’s also nice to just sip, savour and ruminate over. Did you know Primitivo is known as Crljenak in Croatia? Good luck with that one. PRICE: About $27 at bottle.

This Day in History, 1867 CALEB Booth was suspended for six months. Was Caleb a footballer? No, he was the minister of the Holy Trinity in the early 1860s. Caleb had been getting offside with sections of his congregation over a period of some years by ejecting noisy children from the church in the middle of a service. One fateful Sunday in 1867, Caleb’s church was invaded by

a dog during worship. Caleb descended from the pulpit to see it off the premises, a scuffle followed involving Caleb and the dog, during which Caleb managed to break the dog’s leg, thus getting him offside with the town’s dog lovers as well. The Bishop decided Caleb had carried muscular Christianity a bit too far, and suspended him. It was recognised that Caleb was not cruel, but rather impetuous.

The project builds on a previous study of 50 patients at the cancer centre undertaken by the research unit, and funded by the Trust Fund, which used an electronic survey to assess patients over the age of 70. Chair of La Trobe’s John Richards Centre for Rural Ageing Research, Professor Irene Blackberry, said the Trust funding builds research capacity with UNSW medical and La Trobe University social work students both involved in the study. “This research is novel because the photovoice research method is yet to be trialled to compliment clinical care,” Dr Blackberry said. “In our study, photovoice methodology is expected to compliment geriatric assessment and clinical decision making to ensure that enhanced supportive care is person-centred.” Fourth year LaTrobe University student, Kylie Owen, who is studying a bachelor of Human Services and Master of Social Work at the Albury Wodonga campus became involved in the project during her third year placement with the John Richard Centre for Rural Ageing Research. “I am interested in pursuing a future career in either palliative care, aged

care or hospital social work so I felt this project would provide me with a great opportunity to see firsthand how research informs evidenced based practice which will positively impact the lives of our local aging population and their families, namely, the lives of older people with a cancer diagnosis being treated at Border Medical Oncology,” Kylie said. “I was involved in the beginning stages of the project (between October 2020 and January 2021) which involved a scoping literature review of enhanced supportive care in geriatric oncology, assisting in the development of the research protocol under the supervision of my task supervisor Tshepo Rasekaba and assisting in the application for ethical approval from Albury Wodonga Health. “Due to the COVID situation, all interactions with my colleagues were via email and Zoom which was quite challenging at times but thankfully my work colleagues at the John Richards Centre for Rural Ageing and Border Medical Oncology were extremely helpful and were always available for online mentoring. “I found Dr Steer’s dedication to his patients and his commitment to chang-

ing the system to provide better care for his patients very inspiring as it fits with social work values. “Social work is a dynamic profession and provides for a diverse range of employment opportunities including research, hospitals, aged care, community health centres, family support services and community development. “Getting involved with this research project has afforded me the opportunity to expand my knowledge in the research and medical fields of practice. “I am very grateful for the connections I have made through this research project and have gained an appreciation for the hard work that goes behind research.” The latest research will feed in to the ReViTALISE program, overseen by the Border Medical Oncology research unit, which was recently granted $18.6 million in Federal Government funding over five years with Dr Steer and Professor Blackberry overseeing the geriatric oncology research as part of that project as well. About 20 patients have been recruited for the study and it is being conducted over 30 weeks with the final report due in October.

GONE FISHING

INSIDE BUSINESS

◆ FIGHTING FISH: Call it what you like - a Mud Marlin, Sewer-bass, Golden Garbage, Hillbilly Bonefish etc - but the European Carp is a fantastic target species. Not only do they fight very well, but when you catch them you are doing the environment a favour by removing them from the water.

Stable autumn weather is perfect to chase Murray cod AS I write this column the weather forecast is for a week of really stable, mild to warm weather with the thermometer pushing into the low 20s. This stable autumn weather can lead to some good autumn Murray cod fishing. At a time of the year when the cod fishing can be quite slow, this is the type of weather pattern that I look for. I will be heading out this week chasing Murray cod. My expectations are not too high, but I think that while the weather is so stable I am in with a good chance. Overall the Murray cod fishing seems to have slowed right down, particularly in the rivers, however there has still been a few caught on both bait and lures. On the weekend I went bait fishing at Lake Moodemere. The fishing was pretty slow. I fished from 6.30am to 10am and in that time I caught two carp and had a couple of other bites. So while the fishing wasn’t red hot, Lake Moodemere is definitely

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA ◆ GOOD TALK: It’s important to have succession conversations ahead of time to make the transition smooth for everyone.

a fishing option during the winter months, particularly for those of us that enjoy carp fishing, and there are more of us than you might think as carp become more and more appreciated for their hard fighting ability. I caught both of my Moodemere Mud Marlin using worms as bait. The trout streams are all fishing well at the moment too. I have had quite a few reports from around the region, with good reports from the Howqua River, the Mitta Mitta River and several streams in between. Small shallow swimming minnows and brightly coloured soft plastics seem to be getting the best results.

Gain peace of mind, set up the next generation with succession plans DESPITE all the pressures and decisions that need to be made when running a family farm, starting the conversation about transitioning the operation over to the next generation, is very often the most difficult. Traditional challenges of coping with bad seasons, profitability issues or even talking to the bank manager appear almost preferable to taking the time to sit down and discuss succession planning. Conversations about family business structures, retirement and estate planning can be just as tricky and easy to put off.

However, an unplanned event such as a family member developing a disability, dying or divorcing can result in costly legal and taxation bills adding to what is already an emotional time. On the other hand, a clear, wellstructured and considered plan developed well in advance can maximise the chance of successful transitions for all parties and ensure family harmony.
