Memories of a pioneer skier and first woman of Falls Creek By BELINDA HARRISON AN iconic figure and the first woman on the mountain at Falls Creek, Skippy St Elmo was a pioneer and study in ‘can do’ attitude and her legacy lives on at this world-class ski destination. Mavis Grace Lindsay was born in 1917 and married Toni St Elmo in Ballarat on December 18, 1944. She seems to have been known as Skippy from very early days, with names on the backs of photos confirming the fact. Skippy and Toni moved from Melbourne in 1945 and spent the winter living in Wallace’s Hut. Toni was employed by the State Electricity Commission (SEC) to
measure snow depths and water flows for the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme. The couple spent the winter of 1946 in a two room hut at the bottom of The Gully (Falls Creek) however, it was not the fact that they were the first full time residents at Falls Creek, or Toni’s work with the State Electricity Commission that put the two of them on the map. This dynamic husband-and-wife duo was responsible for early developments at the Falls Creek resort and for promoting ski sports and tourism by establishing the first ski school, ski lifts and lodge facilities. And Skippy became a champion skier. At 28 years old and newly mar-
ried, Skippy had never skied before. Her new husband taught her. He also introduced Skippy to racing - entering her in the first club championships held by the Bogong Ski Club at Rocky Valley, which he had established. Ski-Horizon magazine, the official journal of the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs, had a regular column by members entitled ‘Why I Ski’ and the May 1950 edition featured Skippy, where she shared her memories of that first race. “Up to that stage, my skiing was confined to the practice slopes and it seemed like I had joined the ranks of ‘no hopers’ - getting nowhere fast,” she wrote.

Bringing home a new puppy ONCE you have done your research and decided on a suitable pet there will be several things you need to consider upon bringing your puppy home. Set up a living space area where your puppy can safely stay while they settle in and get used to their new environment. Check the area to make sure there isn’t anything dangerous that your puppy might access by accident. Create a cosy sleeping area within the living space where your puppy can sleep and rest. Provide some safe puppy toys so they can play in their living area. To make the process of toilet training successful and as efficient as possible, you need to use reward-based positive reinforcement training. The first step is to give your dog plenty of opportunities to go to the toilet area. The second is to reward your puppy every time (or as often as possible) that they toilet in the place where you want them to toilet. Desexing your dog prevents unplanned pregnancy and has some positive effects on behaviour and health. Ensure your puppy is microchipped and recorded on the relevant microchip register against your contact details so that they are identifiable and you can be contacted if they accidentally get lost.
with RSPCA Knowledgebase Most local councils require pet dogs to be registered with them so you should contact the relevant local council to check pet dog registration requirements. Training and socialisation should be started in puppyhood and are very important for your puppy’s behavioural development. The puppy’s experiences during this critical period can influence and shape their behaviour in adulthood. Exercise is an important aspect of your pet’s day to day care. A walk is often their favourite part of the day - they are able to explore the neighbourhood and spend time with you - and it’s a good opportunity for your dog to socialise with other dogs. At some stage, you may have to leave your puppy alone for short periods so try and make this a gradual process to avoid causing anxiety. Gradually increase the length of time you are away so that your puppy realises that you will always come back. A good way to avoid boredom while you are away is to leave toys for him to play with. with Mark from Edgars Books and News

Still Life by Sarah Winman FOLLOWING on from her previous bestsellers When God Was A Rabbit and Tin Man comes Sarah Winman’s best book to date: Still Life. An exquisitely crafted story of damaged characters and redeeming love set in 1944, it covers four decades of war, art, love and loss. Journey between the beauty of the Tuscany Hills and the grime of East End London with all the con-
tradictions those two sites evoke. Ulysses Temper (a British soldier) and Evelyn Skinner (an art historian and ..?) meet in a cellar of a villa over multiple bottles of wine as the bombs fall. Where this chance meeting takes them, their families and lovers over the years develops into an intriguing tale. Fall in love with Col, Alys, Massimo, Cress and the Contessa.
Dedicate a weekend to reading and allow your imagination to travel to the Boboli gardens in Florence, a night at the cinema watching Fellini’s I Vitelloni and the 1948 London Olympics. Remember your youth when Peg helps Ulysses with his glasses. For lovers of E. M. Forster and Lucinda Riley, Still Life is this month’s selection and is available now at Edgars Books and News.

YOUR HEALTH Stanton & Killeen Shiraz Durif 2019
IN recent weeks I’ve had the pleasure of meeting some amazing women artists and it’s not just their talent that has blown my mind. I’ve loved hearing about what inspires them, found them to be genuinely passionate about their practice and without exception, encouraging and supportive of others. It has also been gratifying to hear how important their art is to them, how they find it therapeutic and comforting in times of crisis and in some cases, even helped soothe their pain. The importance of the arts in our lives is something that shouldn’t be underestimated and it seems to me investing time in your own wellbeing is time well spent. I’m planning to find more time for creative pursuits while also not rushing my enjoyment of wines like Stanton & Killeen Shiraz Durif. It has an inky, purple-red colour and deliciously spicy aroma of wild blackberry fruit. There is a lush, kind of juicy feel in the mouth, rich with blackberry and plum, but then it’s bitey and quite savoury with the influence of French and American oak. It feels generous, moreish and almost like something a little decadent, but then again

Subsidised hearing aids well-deserved and worth spending time on. It would be a great with a piece of eye fillet served medium rare but is also just fine enjoyed in a big glass while relaxing on the couch. Stanton & Killeen celebrated 145 years of family winemaking in 2020 and it happens that Wendy Killeen and her daughter Natasha Killeen are at the helm today. Good for them. About $24.

DO you know what hearing services you may be entitled to receive through your pension or eligible DVA card? The Federal Government’s Hearing Services Program (HSP) has provided access to hearing services for many decades. Through this program, people are offered a choice of service provider, a hearing assessment, advice and support about hearing loss, the provision of subsidised hearing aids to assist communication and assistance with maintenance of these aids. There is a wide range of ‘government’, fully-subsidised, hearing aids, which must meet (and they often exceed) performance and technical requirements set by HSP to provide assistance at reducing the effects of most people’s hearing loss. With the advances in hearing technology over the past few decades, many advanced features have become available in the range of fully subsidised devices. When discussing new hearing aids with you, there should be the option of a fully subsidised hearing aid and sometimes the provider will also dis-
cuss the benefits of partially subsidised aids, which may provide some technological features to suit an individual’s lifestyle choices. In this case, HSP contributes the same amount as if the device is fully subsidised and you pay the additional amount quoted (the ‘gap’). The provider is required to provide a quote for your devices prior to the hearing aid fitting. Please note that you should not feel obligated to purchase a partially subsidised hearing aid. If this has been recommended to you, remember to ask your service provider the reasons they recommend that device. Hearing aid life generally does not depend on whether you paid extra for your aids. HSP funding is available for replacement of aids which are more than five years old; of course, technological changes in that time probably mean that the new hearing aids sound better. It is important to consider which hearing aid features may be important for you. Are your listening needs relatively

straightforward - usually in quieter places and listening to TV or more complex due to a need to converse regularly in groups or meetings? Do you have dexterity or vision problems which could mean you might benefit from rechargeable hearing aids? Do you regularly use a mobile phone? These are questions your hearing professional will discuss to assist you in making an informed choice about the hearing aids best suited to you. HSP provides funding for all HSP clients to have an annual hearing checkup, whether or not they use hearing aids or other listening devices. If it has been longer than twelve months since your last hearing check, it may be time to arrange your next visit. More information about HSP can be found on their website at https://hearingservices.gov.au/. If you have questions about the benefits of the HSP program for you, or you would like to arrange an appointment to discuss your hearing needs, please call your local independent provider, Wangaratta Audiology on (03) 5722 4433.

Memories of a pioneer skier
From page 1
“I do not even remember going through the flags - perhaps I didn’t still at the end of the nightmare run I was happy to learn that the third fastest time was mine. “I knew from then on my goal was to be a racing skier but did not realise how hard and long the road was to be and still is.” In 1947, the first ski lodge was built by six SEC employees - Toni St Elmo, Ray Meyer, Jack Minogue, Lloyd Dunn, Adrian Ruffenacht and Dave Gibson (along with their families) who saw the potential of the area to be opened up to skiers. It had to be constructed in secret as efforts by earlier skiers had been thwarted by the engineer in charge of the Hydro scheme. The group met at what is now known as Eagle Rock where Skippy announced, “This is my favourite skyline.”
This became significant after the hut was complete and Adrian suggested naming it exactly that. Toni added that it was time to upgrade it from a ‘hut’ to a ‘lodge’ and the name of the first ski lodge at Falls Creek was born: Skyline Ski Club Lodge. Toni also established the Nissen Ski School with Hungarian-born ski instructor Milan Kovacic and was involved in the building of the resort’s first ski club - Bogong. In 1949, Skippy won the Downhill and Combined State Championship held at Mt Buller. “I could now understand why Toni had insisted I train hard - I had felt strong and managing the rough and ice patches in the downhill was no trouble to me,” Skippy said in a snippet from her memoirs. “After my second run in the slalom I felt so fresh and fit I was ready to do it all again.”
In 1950, Skippy was selected to compete in New Zealand with the Victorian team to compete in New Zealand and by 1951 Milan had become her coach. Skippy trained with the men at the Bogong Ski Club and that fact became a talking point in 1953 when the Albury Ski Club held an Open Championship and Skippy won in giant slalom and downhill. “It had never for a moment occurred to me it was any big deal racing against the men,” she said in her memoirs. “Both Toni and Milan had always insisted I ski with the men whenever it was possible.” Czech Olympic skiers John Wagner and Frank Prihoda were friendly and helpful in Skippy’s career and offered advice which she gladly accepted … and it helped her win. “Later, John told me, in his experience skiing, even in Europe, he had
never known a woman to win an Open Ski Championship.” By 1960 after 16 glorious winters, Toni noted that ‘commercialism was slowly taking over’ and he and Skippy said a fond but sad ‘Ski heil’ to Falls Creek. Skippy passed away in Queensland in July 2005 and Toni passed away in the September of the same year. They were 88 and 91 respectively. In November 2006 the pair was honoured at the Alpine Village at Falls Creek by the spreading of their ashes over Eagle Rock. A book containing Skippy’s personal diaries covering the years 1946 to 1985 (the latter years being additions to the original memoirs) will be published later this year and further details on the content and availability will be given closer to that date. ISO RECIPE

Crunchy Parmesan bread sticks
WE’RE back in a snap lockdown so it’s time to share another favourite recipe. This recipe comes from Renee Raknes and daughter Ava from Wangaratta. Crunchy Parmesan breadsticks Makes 24 Ingredients 1 pack instant yeast 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour 1/2 cup semolina flour 2 teaspoons salt 1/4 cup olive oil 2 teaspoons honey 8 tablespoons parmesan 1 tablespoon parsley 1 teaspoon garlic salt Method In a large bowl, whisk together the flours, salt and yeast. Stir in the olive oil and honey. To knead dough, you can use a stand mixer with a dough hook or knead by hand. If kneading by hand, you may need to use an additional 2 tablespoons of flour Knead dough for 10 minutes until smooth. Let dough rest for 5 minutes. Shape and stretch the dough into a 14” (35cm) x 4” (10cm) rectangle by pressing the dough down with one hand and pulling at each end with the other hand in turn. Brush the dough with olive oil and let it rest in place - covering the top and sides with plastic wrap.
nemedia.com.au
Let it proof for one hour at room temperature. The dough should then be puffy and if you press your finger into it, it will leave an impression. Preheat the oven to 230C (210C fan forced) and prepare a large baking tray lined (approx. 40cm in length) with baking paper. Remove plastic wrap from dough and brush with olive oil again. Cut dough into four equal parts. Work with one at a time and cover the remaining dough with the plastic wrap. Mix together the parmesan, parsley and garlic salt (the topping). Cover the dough with a quarter of the topping, make sure it reaches all the way to the edges and then lightly press it into the dough. Cut dough into six strips. Stretch and roll out each strip until they are 14” (35cm) to 16” (40cm) in length. Twist the strips by simultaneously rolling one hand forward and one hand back along the length. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until light brown, turning them at 6 minutes. While these bake, cut and roll the next quarter of dough, repeat for remaining dough until all are cooked. Breadsticks should have a lovely ‘snap’ when you break them and can be served hot or cold.
with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ THE UNSUNG HERO OF MODERNITY: We encounter it everyday, but never spare it a second thought . How did this sticky substance come about?
The sticky history of glue THE history of glue spans the entire modern history of mankind, from the earliest development of tools, to the rise and fall of ancient empires, to the development of modern chemistry that has managed to touch every aspect of our daily lives. Even though regular use of glue was, for the majority of human history, available only to a small percentage of the population, today everyone comes into contact with glues no matter where they look. Glues are used in the creation of clothes, shoes, furniture, transport vehicles, electronics, construction, medicine and even more esoteric uses, such as police forensic tools and space satellites. The earliest known adhesives come from simple bark of birch tree, which was used totally unprocessed in prehistoric times - as early as 200 thousand years ago. By 5,200 BC more advanced processes were introduced in continental Europe and Middle East, involving mixtures that used a natural, solid polymer pitch, or tar as it is commonly known. The creation of such tar-based glue involved the precise heating of birch bark. More common animal glue was first introduced in Ancient Egypt some 4 thousand year ago, which is the ear-
liest known confirmation of use of glues that were made by prolonged boiling of animal hides and hooves. The most popular uses of glue (which was very expensive and rare at the time) was reinforcing the durability of papyrus scrolls, and creating furniture for the nobility. Several examples of such furniture were preserved in tombs of the Pharaohs, including the casket of Tutankhamun. While glues became very popular in Ancient Greece and Rome, where they were used for a variety of purposes (including building construction and ornamental objects such as mosaics), they went out of fashion in Europe immediately after the fall of Roman Empire. Some examples of animal glue use remained in China around 900 - 1,000 AD, mostly as tools for furniture makers and as a preservative for images. Similar limited use of animal glues was present in North and South America, Asia, and Africa. The first resurgence of glue in modern Europe happened in the 16th century, when advances brought by trading, the emergence of science, and the Renaissance, enabled woodworkers to start experimenting with new designs that were possible only with the use of animal glues.
Their efforts were applied not only for creation of fashionable furniture for nobles (a techniques of veneering and marquetry that was invented by Greeks and Romans between 1- 500 AD), but also creation of many types of wooden instruments that were previously impossible to create (guitars, violins and pianos among others). Some other types of glue that were invented in Greece and Rome were mortar (mix of lime, volcanic ash and sand), Egg-based adhesive pastes, fish-based glues and very important tar-based glue that was extensively used as sealant of wooden plants on boats and ships. Before the arrival of the industrial revolution, glue factories emerged in Holland, England, Germany and Switzerland and the United States, with most of the factories being focused on animal-based glues that were made by animals sold by individual animal owners and meat factories. By the mid 1800s, the first rubberbased glues were introduced, and in the 1930s modern chemists started heavy development of fully synthetic adhesives. The final pillar of modern glue history happened in 1958 when Harry Coover Jr released into public his first version of Super Glue.
