FIONA Sawyer is putting her wide range of experience across local government, social housing, tertiary education and charity sectors to good use in her role as Anglicare Victoria’s community development coordinator for the region. “When my previous Wangaratta-based job finished in April 2021 I was keen to stay in Wangaratta and was excited when the role with Anglicare Victoria was advertised,” she said. “It gave me the chance to remain in Wang while also bringing together all of my previous skills and working in an area that enabled me to support the wider community. “As an active member of the Anglican community within the Diocese of Wangaratta, I also looked forward to increasing connectivity and further developing the working relationship between Anglicare Victoria and the diocese.” Anglicare Victoria is involved in two main areas in the North East area - emergency relief and managing the Parish Partnership Program in conjunction with the Anglican Diocese of Wangaratta. Fiona provides executive support to ‘Loaves and Fishes - Christian Caring’, which is the major program providing emergency relief and operates out of Anglicare Victoria’s premises in Ovens Street. Loaves and Fishes - Christians Caring provide groceries, vouchers or other material support as required to those in our community who need it the most. They also have an advocacy service and provide referrals to other services across the region like housing support and financial counselling. The program is run by a committee which includes representatives from nine local Christian churches and a number of community representatives. Fiona is also the coordinator of the Parish Partnerships Program and manages the volunteers across Anglicare Victoria’s various programs. The Diocese of Wangaratta Parish Partnerships Program is overseen by the Diocese of Wangaratta Parish Partnerships Steering Committee which includes representatives from the diocese and Anglicare Victoria.

YOUR GARDEN

Spring is in the air WITH so many animals on the move it is not surprising that we see increased numbers of native wildlife coming in to the clinic. While it is wonderful to see the community looking out for wildlife, we often find that the animals (mainly tortoises and fledgling birds), have been rescued unnecessarily. Tortoises crossing the road are often doing just that - getting from point A to point B in the tortoise world. It is certainly helpful to move the tortoise off the road (in the direction it was heading) but if it does not appear injured and the shell is intact it does not require further intervention. Also at this time of the year many young birds are brought into the clinic by people concerned that the bird is injured and ‘cannot fly’. Sometimes this is the case and the bird does need veterinary treatment. However, more often the bird is simply ‘fledging’ - a natural stage of development. Fledging occurs when the baby bird starts to explore the world outside the nest and attempts to fly. For the first few days in this stage of development, the wing muscles are still weak and fatigue easily. The young bird needs practice to build up the necessary strength for full flight. This process can take up to 10 days and it is during this period that the bird is often ‘rescued’ and bought into the clinic.

with Ovens and Kiewa Veterinary Hospital My advice is to sit back and observe the bird before intervening. In most cases there will be watchful parents close by coming down to feed the bird and hide it in lower branches when night falls. I liken it to learning to ride a bike for the first time - although dad lets go of the handles, he is always close by to pick you up when you fall. If you feel the fledging bird is in danger due to the presence of dogs or cats please remove these pets from the bird’s environment or encourage the animal’s owner to do so. If still in doubt contact a wildlife shelter for advice. At this time of year, wildlife shelters are always busy with the spring orphans and wildlife injured on roads. We don’t want to give shelters another job the parent birds can do much better. It is difficult for humans to teach a young bird how to hunt for food and socialise with other birds. Many birds (ie; magpies) are familial and territorial and integrating them back into the wild is a precarious and often unsuccessful enterprise. So the next time you come across a young bird looking a bit lost and helpless, take the time to observe from a distance before stepping in.

◆ UNCOMMON: The Acacia denticulosa is a rare species, but one to behold when in full flower.

◆ INTERESTING: The leaves of an Acacia denticulosa are intricate and the flowers are reminiscent of fuzzy caterpillars. PHOTOS: Helen Van Riet

Acacia denticulosa WATTLES are a common sight in spring. The bush throughout our region is alight in green and gold - tall or diminutive, some lacy and delicate, some boldly upright, weeping or rigid, the sheer variety of Australia’s approximately 750 Acacia species is amazing. Two common garden species are the Cootamundra Wattle (Acacia baileyana) and Queensland Sliver Wattle (Acacia podalryiifolia). Although breathtakingly beautiful in flower, both are far removed from the bushland where they naturally occur. Both will grow into dense-foliaged small trees. They are prolific seeders and, over time, perhaps decades, these garden escapes will invade bushland areas, shading out and displacing Indigenous species. These wattles are declared weeds in our district so resist planting them. Why not grow a different wattle which will not become a ‘garden escape’? There are many from which to choose.

with Helen van Riet AUSTRALIAN PLANTS SOCIETY (VIC)

A particularly interesting and rare species is the Sandpaper Wattle (Acacia denticulosa). The dark green phyllodes are tough and sandpaper-like in texture. Bright golden rods burst forth in late September. The flowers are prolific and massive, reminiscent of giant fuzzy caterpillars. This unusual wattle is listed as vulnerable on the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. It originates from inland southwestern Western Australia, growing on shallow, sandy soils overlaying granite outcrops. It is drought tolerant, and requires little or no supplementary water once established. It grows rapidly from scarified seed

to form a large shrub approximately 3 metres x 2 metres. Expect prolific flowering within two years. Regular tip pruning after flowering will help maintain bushiness. This uncommon wattle is worthy of planting as a feature for the larger garden. It is frost-tolerant down to -7 degrees Celsius. Even when not in flower, the unusual leaf form creates interest. Many acacias are short-lived. In their natural habitat these members of the legume family are first responders after fire, fixing nitrogen in the soil, and preparing a seedbed for more slow-growing and long-lived species. A. denticulosa has a lifespan of around 10 to 15 years. To keep this rare wattle as a garden specimen, collect the seed in early summer when the pea-like pods mature. Dried seed can be stored for years and requires scarifying with boiling water to crack the hard seed coat and trigger germination before planting. Seed or established plants are available from the nursery trade.

WINE TALK

YOUR HEALTH

Preece Wine of Mitchelton King Valley Pinot Grigio 2021 OVER the years there have been a number of brands which, with the help of clever marketing and making a consistent product, have always been associated with excellence. Everything from Danish electronics to French perfume, luxury car brands to business suits - even kitchenware and watches - they’ve managed to position themselves in a space that commands high prices we’re willing to pay because we’re confident of the quality of the end product. There may be some who think a name or an endorsement from a celebrity is all they need, but they are just flash in the pans - with the true quality products standing the test of time in the long term. I like to think the words “King Valley” are now becoming almost synonymous with quality so much so people reach for it with confidence because they want the good stuff. It’s certainly an outstanding region for Italian wine varieties like Pinot Grigio. Preece King Valley Pinot Grigio has a pale straw colour with a hint of green and a bright, fruity and lightly floral aroma - think pears and white flowers - which is something I

with Anita McPherson

love about the variety. The flavour is crisp with Beurré Bosc and tart apple, there is some bright citrus tang but also some subtle background spice which seems to help the flavour stay with you - and it does. It’s exciting and refreshing and a perfect choice with seafood like white fish, or maybe freshly picked crab or lobster. Let’s keep this top shelf. PRICE: About $22 a bottle.

This Day in History, 1940 ONE of the most remarkable aircraft accidents of the war years occurred on this day over the southern Riverina. Two aircraft from the RAAF base at Wagga collided while on a training mission and became locked together. The pilot of the aircraft wedged on top of the other was able to use the control surfaces still operating on his aircraft, to bring the tangled mess down to a safe landing in a paddock near Brockelsby. In a strange twist of fate, the pilot, LAC L.G. Fuller, went on to survive action over Europe and win the DFC, then lose his life in Gippsland near the end of the war, while riding a bike.

with Naturopath Belinda McPherson (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY)

The role of naturopathy in your health care NATUROPATHY and herbal medicine are like the ‘general practice’ of natural medicine. People can come to see us about absolutely anything, that’s one of my favourite things about my work. You just never know what case will walk through the door next. Most commonly though it’s because they are tired, worried, not sleeping well, experiencing some hormonal changes or want some support for the health of their kids. All of these things impact negatively on a person’s energy, so it’s probably not surprising that the bulk of my patients are just tired and somewhat anxious. Ultimately, naturopaths are aiming to improve the energy and healing response of the body using herbal

The ultimate guide for tourists and locals

and nutritional prescriptions, whilst implementing simple diet and lifestyle adjustments. For me, naturopathy is all about supporting a person through whatever is leading to deficient energy levels (illness, worry, fear, insomnia etc.). It might be supporting new mothers who are struggling to breastfeed or struggling with a colicky baby, or using herbal medicine to manage mastitis and postpartum anxiety. It might be meeting a couple before they conceive and working step by step through their anxiety, nutritional deficiency and underlying hormonal imbalance. Often it is about helping to resolve an infection, using herbs to treat and recover from heavy periods and hormonal imbalance, integrating a better

dietary strategy into family life, listening when there is loss, fear or stress. There are so many things that can take our energy away and finding ways to get it back are so very rewarding for me and, I believe, a huge part of naturopathic practice. Kids’ infections respond really well to herbal medicine. Using herbal medicine with my own kids has made me realise the importance of super simple treatment plans. It just works so well. We, as university trained naturopaths, are here to meet you where you are in your health journey and help you to improve your health in your time in a safe and effective way. We look forward to meeting you soon.

“The Parish Partnership Program is aimed at developing joint working relationships between the Diocese, Anglicare Victoria and parishes within the diocese to set up and operate programs to support their local communities,” Fiona explained. “Through Parish Partnerships, Anglicare Victoria also provides administrative support to a number of smaller emergency relief programs including ones operating out of Bright, Mt Beauty and Euroa.” Locals may be familiar with additional programs that are currently running or have previously been run through Parish Partnerships including brick clubs, an urban food garden, the Eldorado homework club and Carevan. Throughout the year, Anglicare Victoria is involved in other programs such as the Bishop’s Winter Appeal, ‘Grab a Grocery’ events, Christmas

hamper distribution and the agency also helps to coordinate emergency relief forums across regional towns. “I am still relatively new in this role but I have begun reaching out to organisations across the region with the intention of working together to support our local communities,” Fiona said. “I am also starting to reach out to the various Anglican parishes that are part of the Diocese of Wangaratta which spans from North Albury to Kilmore and Shepparton to Bright to implement or enhance programs in those communities.” Anglicare Victoria is always looking for volunteers to assist with their programs and is working throughout the pandemic and lockdown periods to provide support and assistance to those in need. Volunteering opportunities can range from assisting with ad-hoc programs such as Grab a Grocery, or

undertaking regular shifts on a roster basis for ongoing programs such as emergency relief. “In the emergency relief space, we are continuing to look for opportunities to develop new programs that can be established moving forward, particularly as we emerge from the other side of the pandemic,” Fiona said. In-kind donations of groceries or other material items such as bedding, knitted bears, new clothes, etc can be made to Loaves and Fishes - Christians Caring at 39 Ovens Street, Wangaratta between 10am and 12pm on weekdays. GONE FISHING

nemedia.com.au

TECH & SCIENCE

◆ MORE THAN TRIANGLES: Pythagoras, the man behind the Pythagorean theorem was more than just a mathematician.

◆ GOLD: Jodie Harper and her grandson Liam (five) with a goldfish they caught in Lake Benalla on the weekend. They also caught a three kilogram European Carp in the same spot.

A great week of fishing WHAT a week it has been. I have fished a few times and caught fish at every spot that I have wet a line. I fished Lake Nillahcootie last Thursday where I managed to catch two small yellowbelly and one carp. Don’t be misled, the fishing was slow. It took my wife and I six hours and three fishing rods to catch those fish. But, the weather was not great with a strong wind making fishing difficult. Lake Nillahcootie is fishing OK, and getting better as the weather warms up. I fished the Ovens River in Wangaratta at the junction on Saturday morning, where I managed to catch four very large carp. I seem to catch more carp in the Ovens River in spring than any other time of the year. I fished a couple of small trout streams this week where I found the trout fishing to be very good. Once again the conditions were not favourable with a stiff southerly wind and intermittent showers, but I did find a few willing trout.

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA

I have had reports of carp and goldfish being caught at Lake Benalla, as well as a few yellowbelly being caught in the Broken River downstream of Benalla using worms as bait. My friend Chris Coyne was bait fishing with his family at Lake Eildon on the weekend. Not only did he catch a few yellowbelly off the bank, but he also managed to land an 84cm Murray cod using a small yabby as bait with light line while targeting yellowbelly. And as with last week, Lake Hume continues to be the powerhouse of fishing in the region at the moment with decent numbers of redfin being caught, as well as a few very large trout and yellowbelly.

Pythagoras - the man, the myth, the legend WHEN your school teacher demonstrated how to find the hypotenuse of a right triangle, you probably didn’t get down on your knees and start worshiping him as a god. But when it first happened in ancient Greece, that was pretty much how it went down. Pythagoras, the man behind the Pythagorean theorem was more than just a mathematician. He was a spiritual leader with followers who thought he’d been sent from Heaven. For the Pythagoreans, math was a religious experience and some equations were divine secrets, unfit for public eyes. While no contemporary, authoritative account of Pythagoras has ever been discovered, and the mathematician himself never wrote anything down, historians have been able to piece together a picture of the ancient Greecian and his followers - though precisely how much is true, how much is embellishment, and how much is complete fiction is a topic of some debate. Nonetheless, this week I thought I’d liven up one of the oldest equations in maths textbooks with some interesting facts and factoids about Pythagoras - the man, the myth and the legend. Pythagoras led a cult that worshiped numbers A whole group of mathematicians signed up to be Pythagoras’s pupils - to learn everything he knew, and to help him solve the great riddles of the universe. But this was more than just a group of people who liked math - it was a full-blown religion. Numbers, Pythagoras believed, were

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au the elements behind the entire universe. He taught his followers that the world was controlled by mathematical harmonies that made up every part of reality. More than that, though, these numbers were sacred - almost like gods. Seven was the number of wisdom, 8 was the number of justice, and 10 was the most sacred number of all. Every part of math was holy - when they solved a new mathematical theorem, they would give thanks to the gods by sacrificing an ox. The Pythagoreans worshiped the number ten The Pythagoreans had a sacred symbol called the Tetractys. It was a triangle with 10 points across four rows, meant to symbolize the organization of space and the universe. Ten, they believed, was the number of the highest order, which contained the course of all mortal things. He was worshipped as a demigod Pythagoras’s followers believed that he was a demigod. They called him “the divine Pythagoras” and told people that he was the son

of a god - usually either Hermes or Apollo. They even thought that Pythagoras had superpowers. His followers said that he could tame eagles and bears by stroking them. He could control any animal, for that matter, with the sheer power of his voice, and he had the power to write words on the face of the Moon. One of the biggest legends about him was that he had a golden thigh. When someone doubted his divinity, it was said that Pythagoras would show them his shimmering thigh and win a new convert. Obviously his thigh wasn’t actually made of gold, and it’s believed that instead his thigh had a large birthmark, which were often considered to be divine in nature to the ancient Greeks. The Babylonians understood Pythagoras theorem 1000 years before it was ‘discovered’ Plimpton 322 is a broken clay tablet from the ancient Babylonians city of Larsa, which was located near Tell as-Senkereh in modern day Iraq. The tablet was written between 18221762 BCE. In 1945 the tablet was revealed to contain a highly sophisticated sequence of integer numbers that satisfy the Pythagorean equation a2+b2=c2. This is the fundamental relationship of the three sides of a right-angled triangle, and this discovery proved that the Babylonians knew this relationship more than 1,000 years before the Greek mathematician Pythagoras was born.
