Women cyclists prepare to hit the heights again By ANITA McPHERSON

A CYCLING event which pushes participants to their limits and helps them achieve their goals in a supportive and inclusive environment will return to the High Country in November. The 3 Peaks Women’s Cycling Weekend, an extension of the High Country Women’s Cycling Festival, takes riders to the pinnacle of the region as they tackle three of the most scenic and challenging climbs, riding to Mount Hotham, Falls Creek and Mount Buffalo, over three days. The festival was developed by outdoor adventure enthusiasts and cyclists Clare Holdsworth and Michelle Armstrong with the aim of inspiring and encouraging more women to ride; the 3 Peaks event added after women told them they wanted to climb higher but needed some support. Ms Armstrong said making 3 Peaks happen this year, following yet another dispiriting lockdown, was more important than ever. She said having cancelled their festival twice last year due to COVID, it was exciting to be able to deliver “an awesome” 3 Peaks last November. “Making it happen this year too is important for so many reasons and even more significant after the recent state-wide lockdown,” she said. “Women tell us that they love the 3 Peaks concept, and the opportunity to smash some ride goals by taking on three mountain climbs over three days, is top of their bucket list.”

Ladybirds LADYBIRDS are great to have in your backyard. There are about 6000 species of ladybird in the world, with around 500 species in Australia. You might know ladybirds as ladybugs or ladybeetles, but whatever name you use they are the fantastic at keeping your garden healthy. You might think of ladybirds as being red or orange with black spots, but they can be many different colours - some are all one colour, some are striped and some are even hairy! They have four life stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult beetle. The adult beetle can fly long distances to find new food sources or mating partners. Ladybirds are very common in gardens all around Australia. You may have seen them gathering together for a feast of aphids on your rose bushes or flying across your garden to check out your herbs.

PET CORNER WANGARATTA RSPCA has many lovable creatures waiting for the perfect family to take them home. If you want to add a furry friend to your home, contact the RSPCA on (03) 5722 2874. Wangaratta RSPCA’s animal adoption source code is BR100934. ACTION-COMEDY BUDDIES: Is your name Turner? Or are you just looking for your Hooch? Then adopt away because this is the dog for you. Hooch’s microchip number is 956000012283200. PHOTO: Belinda Harrison

Ladybirds love to eat aphids, mites and scale insects that destroy a lot of common garden plants like roses. Planting herbs like coriander, fennel and dill will help to attract ladybirds. Ladybirds also like to live in wellwatered gardens because they need to drink frequently. Some also enjoy the occasional treat of pollen or nectar. It isn’t just adult ladybirds that are helpful - the larvae also grow strong by eating aphids, mites and scale insects. They look quite different to adult ladybirds, so keep an eye on any clumps of eggs or larvae you find near groups of ladybirds; you might see them grow up into beautiful ladybirds too. Ladybird facts: A female ladybird can lay up to 2000 eggs in her lifetime. Ladybirds beat their wings up to 85 times per second when they fly. Ladybirds breathe through openings in the sides of their bodies.

Kate Kelly -The True Story Of Ned Kelly’s Little Sister THE Kate Kelly story starts at the end with her death outside Forbes, New South Wales in 1898 and the question was her death suicide or murder? Rebecca Wilson, a Forbes local, was the first to tackle Kate’s tumultuous life. Written briefly into the Ned Kelly legend as the attractive 14 year old younger sister to Ned (and Dan), Kate was harassed by Constable Fitzpatrick at the Kelly homestead when Fitzpatrick arrived to arrest Dan Kelly and subsequently Fitzpatrick was allegedly shot a by Ned Kelly.

This book covers Kate’s early life as a messenger and a decoy for the Kelly gang, through to her attendance at the Glenrowan siege. After the execution of Ned Kelly, Kate Kelly travelled Australia (often with brother Jim), publicising Ned’s life and helping establish the story of the Kelly Gang. Large crowds came to hear her speak and marvel at her riding skills, then she disappeared from public view. Rebecca Wilson has filled in the blanks of this amazing woman with the story of her marriage to Bill ‘Bricky’ Foster, drinking, mother-

hood, a name change from Kate to Ada, terrific 1890 photographs and the mystery of her death to boot. No dry recital of facts but in the vernacular, this is a ripping yarn of a forgotten character from our early years. It’s a worthy addition to the Kelly legend and a fascinating book for a cold winters night or something different and entertaining for your book club. This book is a (large) missing piece of the Kelly jigsaw puzzle and is a must read for fans of The Kelly Legend, Australian History or character-led writing.

YOUR HEALTH Chrismont Wines 2017 La Zona Barbera

FOR many of us, the idea of ordering a selection of dishes which can be shared by everyone at the table is a sound one, particularly if you’re someone who struggles when deciding what to order. It’s not unlike how many of us eat at a family gathering, and it also means you never again have to experience food envy, when your partner has ordered something tastier than your own. I like that it means you can eat as much or as little as you like but still get to sample a good selection of what the kitchen has to offer, while also bringing everyone into the food conversation. One such lunch was enjoyed recently with a bottle of Chrismont Barbera. Chrismont planted Barbera in the grounds of its Upper King Valley vineyard in 1984 and it has grown to become one of their foundation varieties; one they’ve really mastered. It’s a lovely example by winemaker Warren Proft; this purpletinged red alive with lifted aromas of blackberry fruit and the spice of French oak. It has a pleasant weight, a smooth and almost velvety mouthfeel and lingering flavours of dark berry and deep cherry fruit.

This wine is all about balance; not too much of anything and just enough of what you’re hoping for. Enjoy slowly with ricotta balls, a spoonful of rich ragu or with a scoop of cheesy risotto with pine mushrooms and discover what an elegant sufficiency is all about.

This Day in History, 1881 EVERYONE wanted gas lighting. Larger towns pushed ahead with mains supply from a centrally located gas works. Gas enthusiasts in smaller towns like Corowa put in their own plants, and the Corowa Free Press, the local newspaper, was a pioneer. On this day, Corowa and district folk could visit the Free Press office and marvel at the light produced by the Alpha Gas Unit. The Free Press became enthusiastic agents and publicists for the appliance.

Hearing loss and diabetes IT is nearly National Diabetes Week (July 11 to 17, 2021) so this is a good time to reflect on the relationship between diabetes and hearing loss. In recent years, there is a growing body of research which has identified a clear relationship between diabetes and the development of hearing impairment. People living with diabetes are more likely to have a hearing loss than people without diabetes, with some claims that this may be as much as twice as likely. The link between these two health problems is related to the damage high blood sugar levels can do to the deli-

cate structures in the inner ear, which can then disrupt sound reception and make it harder to hear. This damage can happen gradually, over the course of several years, or suddenly. It is well-known that the implications of hearing loss include both physical and psychological effects, leading to significant health, social and economic problems. This can include cognitive decline, social isolation and reduced capacity to learn and work. Signs of hearing loss to look out for are increased volume of the television, the need to frequently request repeats

during a conversation and not hearing well from a distance. Facemasks also make it difficult as the listener cannot see any visual clues to help fill in gaps. Many people also experience difficulty hearing clearly in background noise, although this is a difficult listening situation for everyone. For people with diabetes, especially if they wonder whether they are hearing as well as in the past, it is helpful to consider a regular hearing check. The friendly staff at Wangaratta Audiology would be happy to answer any questions you have about hearing loss so call (03) 5722 4433 today.

Women cyclists prepare to hit the heights again Ŷ

From page 1

Ms Armstrong said if COVID has taught us anything about ourselves, it’s the fact that we are social creatures and miss it when it’s denied, and for women cyclists in particular, a coffee and chat post-ride can be as important as the ride itself. She said it was vital to have events for women, designed by women, which recognised their needs and provided the right kind of support to ease their minds and boost their confidence. “Many female riders consider mountains beyond their capability and this self-doubt is a big factor in why there is such a gender imbalance in cycling, particularly in the alpine regions,” she said. “In organising women’s specific events, we want to share our knowledge, build confidence, and help women discover new ride destina-

tions with new friends. “The simple concept was to organise a weekend we would enjoy too, a celebration of women’s cycling with a focus on fun, fitness and friendship.” Ms Armstrong said the riders support each other as they go up and down the down the mountains, but they also celebrate afterwards in good company with food, wine and laughter. She said they also provide a skills workshop, support vehicle and ride leaders to ensure no one is left behind. Over the past three years the festival has attracted major sponsors such as VicRoads and Visit Victoria, without which Ms Armstrong said it would never have got off the ground. But their next challenge is to secure a sponsor for 2022, as without one, their hopes of encouraging more women to embrace adventure cycling

through the festival may be dashed. “We don’t have huge numbers of participants as, let’s face it, the number of women cycling is quite small and the percentage of those who want to take on the challenge of riding up and down a mountain, is even smaller,” said Ms Armstrong. “However, what we do have is up to 150 healthy, strong, determined women of all ages who are united by their passion for cycling and the joy of alpine riding and most importantly supporting one another to take on new challenges and achieve ride and life goals they never dreamed possible. “It’s a powerful message when women come together in a spirit of determination and camaraderie to push boundaries and set new limits what inspiring role models for the future generation of women.” To find out more visit www.hcwcf. com.au.

Social media allows you to put yourself out there and do extra research as part of your job search. You can learn a lot about businesses or employers you want to work for. You can use that information to make your application and interview stand out. If you are after a career change or just looking for your next position, social media is a great way to find jobs. Just keep in mind your strategies might be different depending on what site you’re looking on. One of the best things

about LinkedIn is that employers and recruiters often come looking for you. It’s really important that your profile is up-to-date and is a good representation of yourself. The strength of your profile can determine if a recruiter or employer will contact you about a job or not. With LinkedIn you can list your interests, make comments and like posts, connect with other people that you have worked with in the past, join groups through the discovery page to find extra resources and connect with other users, you can also browse for job titles and locations with the top search boxes and create a “search alert” to let LinkedIn send you job

matches. Twitter has feeds that you can find which are dedicated to jobs. In the search bar, type the word jobs. Press “search” on your keyboard, change to the ‘People’ tab and you should be able to find some good job-related accounts that you will be able to follow. You can also filter your search with the two dots in the right top corner to find accounts near your location. On Twitter you can also use hashtags to find jobs such as #writersjobs and #developerjobs. This is useful if you would like to search for jobs in a specific field or area. Facebook is useful for finding and connecting with groups for job seek-

ers, job boards, company profiles, Facebook even has its own dedication jobs board. Most companies and organisations have their own Facebook page, so it’s a good idea to follow those that you are interested in working for. This will allow you to see any job opportunities that the companies post on their page. Facebook job groups are also a good way for you to interact with other job seekers and employers looking to hire. Employers join a Facebook job group to promote job vacancies. If you’re in the group, you can make comments and ask the employer questions about their jobs. Before you start look-

ing for jobs it’s important to consider what you put on your own social media platforms. Remember, potential employers may search your name and look up your online profile and look at your social media accounts to see if you fit their company culture. It is important that you keep in mind not only what you are currently posting, but also what you have posted in the past. Go through and remove any posts or pictures that show you from a less-thanideal perspective. There are lots of benefits to using social media as part of your job search. Just remember to keep your posts, pictures and account profiles work-appropriate.

◆ PATCHY: The snow cam at Mt Hotham captured this shot last Friday which shows the thin spread of snow at the top of Snake Gully. PHOTO: Mt Hotham snow cam

Poor snow after rain last week FALLS Creek has four lifts running with an average natural snow depth of 8cm and a snow making depth of 25cm. Snow chains must be carried and fitted when directed. Wombat’s Ramble is currently closed for the safety of skiers and snowboarders. For cross country skiers, there is good, groomed snow on the Eagle Rock to McKay Loop and the Cattle Grid to Stockyard Loop tails. There is poor to patchy snow on the Aqueduct and Nordic Bowl trails and all others are closed. Keep up to date with current lift and trail information and dining options and activities via the website or Falls Creek app. Mt Hotham has around 20cm of natural snow with between two and four lifts turning each day, wind dependent - check the Hotham App to see if the wind is playing havoc with any of the upper lifts. Snow making has been in operation with an approximate depth of 37cm. All cross country trails are open, but terrain parks are currently closed. Following rains of 150mm mid-

last week, the snow at Mt Buffalo is patchy at best and roads have been slippery with poor driving visibility up the hill. There is no tobogganing at Dingo Dell or Cresta Valley at the moment, although this is subject to change if good falls are received earlier in the week. Snow is patchy on the cross country trails and there is no snow for toboggan or snow play at either Horse Hill or Village parks. Mt Buller has two lifts in operation on Bourke Street. Chains are required to be carried for all 2WD and overnight vehicles.

◆ WORTHWHILE CONVERSATION: Lenders Mortgage Insurance (LMI) can be valuable for first home buyers. PHOTO: Shutterstock

Lenders mortgage insurance (LMI) WHILE some view LMI as being exclusively beneficial for lenders, we explore the value for first home buyers. Not to be confused with mortgage protection insurance (which is designed to protect the borrower), LMI is insurance that covers the lender’s risk within a residential mortgage transaction should the loan go into arrears and the borrower is unable to resolve the situation satisfactorily. LMI is a fairly common practice within the industry, particularly for new home buyers who may struggle to save a deposit. It allows an additional fee to be paid by the borrower and usually applies when the loan is more than 80 percent of the purchase property’s price. The purpose of LMI is to ensure security for the lender in case the borrower fails to make loan repayments. Even though the actual house acts as security, the nature of the property market, like any investment class,

North East

means there is a chance that its value could decline, resulting in a financial loss for the lender. The cost of the premium is dependent on several factors, such as the loan size and property value, and most insurers are flexible when it comes to the method of payment. It can either be a one-off upfront premium payment or that premium could be included in the overall cost of the loan and included in monthly repayments. It is not transferable, which means a new loan may require a new fee depending on how much equity the borrower has. What’s in it for me? While it may appear that it is exclusively favourable to the lender, there is value to borrowers in paying the premium. Opting for LMI means it allows a borrower to independently purchase a property sooner than they otherwise might.

LMI is the alternative to using a guarantor or having to save for a bigger deposit, both of which are not feasible options for many first home buyers. A deposit of at least 20 per cent of the desired loan amount is required for a borrower not to be deemed ‘high-risk’. If you are considering purchasing a property in Wangaratta for $450,000 that would mean you require a deposit of around $90,000.00. The beauty of LMI is that it buys time, which means borrowers with smaller deposits are able to enter the market sooner rather than later. The major benefit of LMI is that it allows the dream of homeownership to become a reality for a lot of first home buyers. To see if this is the case for you, speak to an MFAA Accredited Finance Broker at Winsec Savings & Loans, 37 Reid Street, Wangaratta or phone 5721 5200.
