A MOTHER and son team have combined their talents in arts education and scientific research to give local children a unique, creative experience. Mobile Art and Craft (MACC) specialist primary art teacher Jo Briscomb has been working with her son Angus Henderson - one of 20 scientists on board the CSIRO’s national scientific research ship the RV Investigator, currently off the coast of Antarctica - on an innovative project called “Angus goes South for Science” which explores and celebrates the unique connections between art and science. Students have been meeting with Angus via the internet to ask questions and share their creative interpretations of the marine world in the Southern Ocean. Jo said her son is fulfilling his childhood dream of travelling to Antarctica to observe the environment and its wildlife. She said Angus, who grew up in Wangaratta, has been on board the RV Investigator since January and is part of a team collecting data and conducting research in the Southern Ocean.

Caring for your parrot BRINGING a bird into your family is a very exciting time but also a long term commitment as many birds live a lifespan of between 10-80 years. It is important that we give these birds the most enjoyable life we can and ensure that their full lifespan is reached. Nutrition Parrots have a large, strong beak built for chewing. Naturally in the wild, parrots spend a majority of their time chewing and this should be replicated in captivity. Often birds are fed seed as their sole diet, this is tasty, and the parrots love them but they are high in fat and low in vitamins. To provide a balanced diet, we recommend feeding a combination of seeds and steamed vegetables such as corn, broccoli and leafy greens. Environment All birds require a full spectrum of light; sunlight through a closed window is not adequate and vitamin D is absorbed from natural sunlight. Perches should be disposed of regularly, as they can harbour parasites, they get dirty and worn out.
PET CORNER WANGARATTA RSPCA has many lovable creatures waiting for the perfect family to take them home. If you want to add a furry friend to your home, contact the RSPCA on (03) 5722 2874. Wangaratta RSPCA’s animal adoption source code is BR100934. STRIKE A POSE: Looking fierce and gorgeous is Tyra (pictured) who will be the star of your catwalk when you take her home. Offer perches of different sizes and in different locations to keep their enclosure interesting and work their feet. Branches that are rough with bark are good for chewing and foot health. While bird cages offer protection from predators, parrots should spend the maximum amount of time supervised outside their cage in order to get healthy exercise. Toxicities Birds have an efficient respiratory system which consists of lungs and air sacs, however, tobacco smoke is extremely hazardous to birds. It is recommended that you smoke outside, well away from your pet bird. Bird owners need to be aware of the risk of metal toxicity. Because parrots are inquisitive and love chewing and destroying things, they will often chew or even ingest accidentally metal traces from cages, toys or things they have come across. Symptoms are excessive drinking, blood stained urates, green sticky droppings, depression and convulsions.

Autumn jobs in the vegie garden
GROWING your own produce is one of the most rewarding things to do in the garden. As I pull out the last of the summer tomato crop and pick the overgrown zucchinis, my focus turns to what is next. With the recent rain and mild sunny days, now is the perfect time to get out into the vegie patch. It’s the season to refresh, recycle and renew. The first thing to consider is the soil. Edible plants are hungrier than non-edibles so we need to add organic matter and nutrients to replenish what’s been taken out. I add a thick layer of homemade compost to my vegie beds, but well rotted manure is also great. After spreading the organic matter, small seeds such as salad greens can be sown directly on
top for a quick crop. My favourites are baby spinach and rocket. Otherwise, you could top the beds with straw or leaves and let mother nature work her magic while you make up your mind about what to plant. For our area, a terrific resource is the ‘North East Planting Guide’. This poster has been developed with the expertise of passionate local gardeners. It lists what seeds to sow in each month, and what seedlings to plant. There are two sides to the poster - one for the hill country (e.g. Beechworth, Bright) and one for the lower valleys and plains (e.g. Wangaratta, Wodonga). You can pick up a copy from the North East CMA office in Wodonga, or download it at https://
www.necma.vic.gov.au/Solutions/ Sustainable-Agriculture/PlantingGuide Recommended seedlings for planting in April are Asian greens, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, kale, leeks, lettuce, salad greens, silverbeet, snow peas, spinach and spring onions. If you are more patient, all of the above are also suitable for growing from seed now, as well as broadbeans, coriander, garlic, onions and radishes. Remember to keep feeding the soil. Most vegies will benefit from a liquid fertiliser such as fish emulsion or worm ‘juice’ at the time of planting plus regularly throughout the growing season. There are plenty of options, so why not get out into your patch this weekend?

FEATURE STORY
Morrisons of Glenrowan The Siege Shiraz Durif 2018 FOR a long time it has been a tradition in many Australian families to enjoy a roast dinner together on a Sunday. Many of us have fond memories of those meals, so much so that it spawned a popular ad where a young Naomi Watts turns down dinner with Tom Cruise because her mum was making roast lamb. Times may have changed lamb got expensive and Tom Cruise lost the plot - but it is still a real treat to get out a battered old baking dish, brush on a bit of olive oil and slowly roast a whole leg. The smell of it cooking is heavenly, as is enjoying it with crispy spuds, caramelised pumpkin and a glass of Morrisons of Glenrowan The Siege Shiraz Durif. This full-bodied red has a deep, purple red colour and a bright, wild berry aroma. Made from 66 per cent Shiraz and 34 per cent Durif it was matured in French and American oak barrels for 15 months. It has plenty of character; full flavoured and grippy, with savoury, dark berry and plum fruits, a hint of black pepper and laced with toasty eucalypt. It also has a pleasant weight and good length of flavour, pair-

◆ GRAND VOYAGE: Angus Henderson is one of 20 scientists on board the CSIRO’s national scientific research ship the RV Investigator, but he still found time to talk to students in North East Victoria.
Antarctic science meets art in the classroom Ŷ ing well with the juicy, rich lamb. The wine is named to reflect the fall of the Kelly gang in Glenrowan and as a nod to the notorious bushranger’s last meal - roast lamb, peas and a bottle of claret. He may have lost the plot too, but it’s hard to fault his food and wine matching expertise. About $25.
This Day in History, 1897 RUTHERGLEN played host to the Victorian Governor, Lord Brassey, who opened the district’s new Viticultural College. The college had been the dream of the Rutherglen vignerons since the 1880s. They proposed the building of an institution which could carry out practical experiments for vine culture and wine making, and also train skilled staff for the industry. Rutherglen was, at the time, the centre of a wine growing industry of massive proportions, there being 350 vignerons within a 35 mile radius of the town.

“Angus has been interested in marine mammals since he was a student at Wangaratta High School,” she said. “He’s now based in Hobart, a world renowned centre for Antarctic research, where he is completing his PHD in marine studies at the University of Tasmania.” Angus has travelled extensively throughout the world observing and collecting data on the world’s largest and most impressive marine mammals - whales. His research has taken him from the wild artic seas of Norway to the remote seas off the coast of the Great Australian Bight. Angus has spoken at several national and international conferences on his work with marine predators. He is currently on the way back from the Southern Ocean, where the team have been collecting predator data for the Australian Antarctic Division-lead mission to estimate the krill biomass in east Antarctic.
In future summers Angus will be back in the Southern Ocean collecting data on baleen whales to help characterise the krill populations on which whales depend. Jo said the Southern Ocean, with the world’s largest mammals and the furthest and coldest continent, has captured the students’ imaginations. By connecting to the RV Investigator via the video link-up, Jo has been responsible for bringing ground breaking science - experienced in real time - into the classrooms of small and often remote schools throughout the Ovens and Kiewa Valleys. Students have had the opportunity to ask questions of Angus and his team and to see science in action. Following their interaction, Jo said students from Oxley Primary School right up the Ovens Valley to Wandiligong have produced some stunning artworks. “This project has been a perfect way to re-engage students after the unpredictability and disruptions due to COVID-19,” she said.
“Evidence that students are engaged and inspired by Angus’s photos, videos and live feeds from the RV Investigator are in the care, accuracy and detail of the artworks. “Students are using the knowledge they have gained to produce artworks which contain specific Southern Ocean sea creatures and their unique environment. “They are including in their artworks species of whale, seal, penguin - and of course krill - showing their unique identifying characteristics in the colours, shapes and techniques they are using to create their artworks.” The artworks will be displayed at each of the primary schools, but it’s hoped a larger combined exhibition will be held in Wangaratta later this year. Angus and the crew of scientists on the Investigator have been delighted with what the students have been making in response to the photographs, videos and conversations they have had, and they have gone on to share them with others via social media.

GONE FISHING
◆ MURRAY MAGIC: Terry Alexander with a very fat Lake Buffalo Murray cod caught on a Halco Crazy Deep lure last week while trolling for redfin.
Redfin still biting in lakes, if you can find them DESPITE the inclement weather over the last week there has still been some good fishing around the region. Last week I reported on the great fishing that my father and I experienced at Lake Buffalo. This week I have been up there again fishing from my kayak and only managed to catch eight to nine small redfin. My Dad went back up with his brothers and a few friends, and found similarly slow fishing, picking up just a few redfin here and there. The trick when fishing for redfin is to locate a school of fish. Keep on moving around until you find a school of redfin, and that is when your slow day can turn into a fantastic day. I have had mixed reports from Lake Hume this week. Some people are catching 100 plus redfin, and others are completely missing out. Once again, it’s all about locating those schools of fish and keeping them under the boat. My Dad and his brothers spent most of last week at Lake Mulwala, where they got waterlogged from above.
with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA Despite the persistent rain and wind, they (five men) managed to catch around a dozen or so Murray cod for the week, three of which were over 60cm long. With stable weather forecast later this week, Lake Mulwala will definitely be worth fishing. Last Thursday afternoon I fished the Eldorado Dredge Hole with bait. Using one fishing rod with a paternoster rig and one rod with a bubble float, I managed to catch 18 redfin. All fish were caught on worms, and all were too small to keep. A little further afield I received a great report of redfin still being caught in Waranga Basin, with the biggest fish being trolled on a diving lure that measured 32cm in length.
